As I’ve posted before I did do the SE 95 set up on my 2002 FXDL. I did add an oil cooler. The power is decent and the motor has been unbelievably reliable. I think if I was going to upgrade again that S&S 100 Sidewinder Kit looks mean and super easy. Also fairly cheap.
As many older bikers have always told me, I'm 66yrs old. The higher you go, the faster it blows. I'm plenty satisfied with 2002 deuce twin cam 88 gear drive 61,000 miles and still running strong!
We're living in a horsepower upgrade age that 20 or 30 years ago we couldn't have even dreamed of. Also, your channel focuses on the older motors and we get info here that is extremely important. Thank you.
I’ve been riding a used 88 I purchased four years ago. Last two years been pulling a trailer loaded with camping gear. No problems. Been to n west montana. Utah Arizona Colorado Illinois. Iowa. Wisconsin If struggled in high gear on steep climb. Just downshifted to fourth. No problems.
Watching your channel has caused me to spend a little bit of money. I have 2000 Heritage Soft-tail (carbureted) which started out pretty much stock. First I upgraded the cam plate with a Screamin Eagle setup and an S&S 509 cam set. To get it to start and idle a little better I re-jetted the carb and exposed the air/fuel mixture adjustment screw and adjusted that. I was somewhat happy with the results but like most Harley riders I thought I could get more out of the old girl. I then saw this video and purchased the S&S 100 kit. I had this installed by a credible Harley mechanic, he also sent the heads off for refurbishment and some porting. He also suggested installing Twin Tec ignition module and oil cooler which I have also done as well as a better air cleaner. It wasn't loud enough so put a set of Vance and Hines 2 into 2 pipes on it. With all that I'm still not very impressed with the performance. I haven't had it dyno tested, so I can't give any specifics. It starts good but I can tell a cam with a compression release would nice. Other than buying a bigger bike I'm sure what else I can do, plus my wife would kill me. I've also considered a Mikuni carb but can't handle anymore disappointment. Any Ideas?
This guy is great. But the viewers commenting on all these videos are so valuable. So much knowledge and experience I feel like I know more about Harley’s than most Harley salesmen these days btw I went to Harley the other day and I talked to 2 kids who didn’t know know what a twin cam was 😂
You gotta be kidding me? I mean I am not shocked, but still they are selling Harleys and didn't even know what a Twin Cam was? We share a lot of information back and forth in the comments here!
I have 02 Hertage softtail with Kerner two into one muffler! I got it at 26'000 now has 70'000 new starter and battery plugs wires all every done it it runs Great! Think am gonna go with SS 100 kit!
I enjoyed you video on the 88". I went with S&S Sidewinder 100" with screaming eagle 254E cams, at the time of the build the fly wheels were bad . They were sent out to Dark Horse crank works . They repaired them lighten& trued them .I put the 254E cams in myself .At the time of cams I had it on the Dyno, It tuned out at 79.7 hp & 80.5 ft lb of torq . It also had Fuel injectors upgraded to the 29 degree also fueling cam plate & high volume oil pump. I also put in the screaming eagle Sprocket compensator , the Harley variable pressure plate in the clutch in prep for the 100" . I don't know the what the out put is right now as I also upgraded the ECM to the thunder Max. I scared the hell out of a 117cu road glide one night would have smoked him but broke my clutch cable . I did this build on a 2006 Dyna Streetbob . my build is about a year old .
You've got that bike done right with all the parts you got supporting the build! You got a lot left in there if you want a huge power bump by swapping over to an aftermarket cam from the SE you got.
I just sent my 2002 Softail 88" cylinders and heads to Hammer Performance for a 98" bore and porting with a new carb ignition module and cometic gaskets. They do a great job and are a leader in sportster line work. Super stoked to get the parts back.
Here in central Japan I found a place that might do this (now that I am FINALLY got all the problems in my 2002 88 sorted) but its pricey. Im curious how much that's going to run you Harley Dave. It's a matter of whether the high cost here is worth it or not.
@@shizuokaBLUES I do really like Sportsters, but, man, TCs do rock! For me, though no bike is an "investment", every penny spent on maintaining, upgrading or restoring any H-D motor is worth it. Sure, they're not the best engines out there, but unmistakably they have some sort of soul, like if they were alive.
@@GixxerFoo I agree with you, I've been doing this for a number of years and I have less than 6 vendors that are extremely reputable in the aftermarket world. (It fits like it should and everything I need is included in the package) so I've learned I don't mind paying the couple extra bucks for quality and service. HD upgrades can be expensive and I can't tell you how many times I talk to people that have ordered stuff that didn't give you everything you need. Point being that's how some vendors can offer it at a less price. (That's been my experience) As far as I'm concerned you rank right up there with doc Harley. Thanks again for the great material you produce. I've enjoyed your channel for years now.
@@GixxerFoo S & S has a 100" Power Package Kit that in addition to the bolt in cylinders and pistons comes with TC3 oil pump, cam plate, pushrods with tubes, tappets and 585 gear drive cams for around $3,000. I'm not confident to do all of the mechanical work that requires. Would turn key labor for all this be around $1,000? Guess I need to find out from my local independant shop.
So I just did the s&s 100” sidewinder kit with 89cc super stock heads and Andrew’s tw55 cams, dynojet power commander 6 tuner with s&s 2-1 sidewinder exhaust. I’m at 7,000 feet above sea leave. I got 101 hp and 107 torque. One of the guys at work has a 2022 limited with a stock 114, I walk away form him.
All that work and only a 101 hp. Something aint right. Iv seen 98 99 hp just off a breather , exhaust and little head work, thinner head gasket and a tunner. Stock bore.
My friend I would like to thank you, you have save me money dealing with my 2006 Road King 88 engine. I have owned four HD from 2006 RK, Electric Guilds to two Harleys Trikes 2016 and 2018. I still have my 06 Road King and of all the bikes I stated a second ago I love my 88 more then the others. I still have the 06 RK because I still LOVE the American Dream, about a month ago I traded my 2018 trike for a Honda Goldwing DCT, and my reason for the trade is because I was so tired of investment of my money into two bikes with the problem being the M8 not the 88 RK. I want to travel Long distance without the worry of a HD brake down. The RK is for small short trips around town and the GW is for long distance trips. In short and again thank you for your information that is power to customers owners of HD products, other upgrades products and last I STILL LOVE HARLEY-DAVISON MOTORCYCLES
The Gold Wings are no doubt reliable, those things run forever. The Twin Cam 88 is a very reliable motor, Harleys really aren't all that bad if you just keep with them and make sure they are gone over really well.
I like the Twin Cam B engines. They are pretty smooth-running; and beside a little parasitic power loss due to the counterbalancers; it can still become a reliable and powerful engine. I have a pal who has a Deuce. He had head work performed (Zippers) and cams (Zippers) and H-D's 95 cu. in. kit. A hydraulic cam tensioner was added. A SuperTrapp exhaust was installed. He and his wife have ridden the bike from Ohio to CA and it's a daily rider -- no problems whatsoever.
Those B engines are awesome, the balancer system actually worked too well and caused issues with the transmission to fall between gears. They had to give it some vibration to help complete shifts. The loss is only maybe 2 horsepower at wide open throttle with balancer.
MAN OHHH MAN.....I absolutely LOVE the HELL OUT OF YOUR NEW MOTOR SERIES VIDEOS BRO !!!! If you only want to do the big bore kit with fuel moto sending in your cylinders runs you about 700 bucks. That's them boring out your factory cylinders selling you the piston head and base gaskets and then return shipping.
That's the best way to do it honestly, Hammer Performance does that too. Hammer's thoughts are they bore your cylinder out to the max, ride it till it's wore out, and buy some new twin cam cylinders for about $280 each. It's a huge savings over the kits just boring your factory cylinders.
My 2002 Dyna has the 97ci kit with the 510 cams and ported heads and runs like a MoFo. I’m currently doing my 2004 softail with the 98ci kit with 510 cams and head work. I can’t wait to see the difference between the two kits. Both bikes are carb bikes.
I just bought a 98" kit from Zippers. I'm going with 9:5-1 compression and head work. I was concerned with how thin the skirts are. Will I still have good reliability going from an 88 to 98 inches? I've got a new SE cam chest and high flow oil pump, Jagg cooler, Mikuni 42 mm carb, K&N, Supertrapp 2:1, SE .510 cams and gear drive on my 01 FXDX
Hey Man! Thanks for the information on fuel Moto!. I just realized they are 14 mi away from my house. I have a 2005 deluxe and I'm stopping there tomorrow to have them put their 98 in big bore kit new cam plates with wood cams and do a dyno tune for me. I'm ecstatic about having a place I feel I can trust take my 88" to the next level.
Right on! That is awesome! You're very fortunate to be that close to those guys, they have a stupid amount of dyno tuning and experimentation to perfection on their kits. You're going to have one bad 88 when they get finished there!
2001 FLHTCUI, I went with the Dave Mackie 95" with DM590 cam, 20° JM domed piston's, Heads and Cylinders done by DM, 51mm ThunderMax EFI, V&H 2n1 chrome pro pipe... I wanted to jump the HP and TQ but still maintain reliability for touring, I am 64 yo not looking to enter the Senior National Bagger Championships lol I am at about 105HP and 104TQ.. still get great fuel mileage unless I twist to go...
i like big inch, BUT, i want tall gearing, for maximum range. i love using big motors, running lazily, giving crazy range. so far my best was a 58mpg chopper, set up for touring, 6 gallon tanks. i want to see 65-70mpg. someday. so light weight bike, with suspension, but big motor, tall gears, and ride, i was once a 40k mile a year rider.
You've got the Timken bottom end on that bike too! It's way cheaper than a new one and you have something special when you're done. Not just another new bone stock stage 1 bike like you see everywhere.
I've got the fuel moto 98ci kit, I even went with the ported heads they offered. Everything bolted up great and the bike was running great. I just need to get a starter now and a 2 into 1 pipe to help with the power. The 6-6 cams do fall on their face after 3500 or 4000rpms. I feel like I should have went with the other cams but I'll run with these for now.
I have the sidewinder 100 inch jugs and pistons. Also running ported super stock heads 10.5.1 cpr and 575 lift cam set and i just got 125 hp at the tire and 115 lbft . This is a 05 fatboy i built and boy it runs
Facts in a fast, furious format frees up fools from fruitlessly fumbling around trying to find answers on the friggin net!!! I love this... right to the point... channel!!!!
I have a 2000 heritage. 95ci darkhorse crank 4in stroke 10.25.1 compression pistons. Screaming eagle ported heads and intake mikuni 45mm vance and Hines pro pipe tw60a Andrews cams. 560 lift screaming eagle lifters and adjustable pushrods and screaming eagle cam support plate and oil pump and throttle hungry appetite
I have a 2003 FXD Superglide. Put the S&S 100 kit in along with Screaming Eagle heads and 50 mm carb. It has been ten years now, and the bike still rips with absolutely no problem. It is a solid combination.
Generally you would think bolting on a kit like that is going to decrease reliability. My opinion has always been just the opposite, if you keep it reasonable. Now if you put a monster cam and insane compression that's where it gets iffy.
I bought an auction 99 road king that appears to have a bunch of aftermarket done to it. How do I identify the heads, Pistons, pushrods, cams, etc to help me determine my starting point?
Having no history on the bike that's tough, if there's not any visual identification or numbers you'd have to pull the engine down. The cam is likely marked, if you know what cam is in there you can make some determinations. The cam is going to be spec'd for certain compression ratios and engine bore size, this will give you some clues as to what has been done. You could run a camera down the spark plug holes and look at the pistons. If the pistons are flat top they are stock, if they have a dish they are high compression. But yeah, taking the motor down and measuring the bore, head gasket, and examining the heads to see if there is any porting is about the best you can do.
Dollar for dollar I went with Hammer Performance. 98 in. mild cam, mild porting, 9 1/2 to 1. V&H Shorties, Dyno Jet tune. HP and torque just over 100hp. 05 Softail very quick.
That's the way to do it, not a lot of people know Hammer does work on big twins. They are really known for their Sportster exploits, it's a huge savings having them bore your cylinders like that. I like that they are up front about boring to a 98 being a one time deal, a lot of places won't tell you that.
Question...I have a 06 wide glide 88 efi. about 18k miles on it. I bought it used and don't know if it has work done other than what I can see. The shop that did the work has long closed and I cant seem to get any records. Screaming eagle pipes staggered and screaming eagle intake on it. I assume it must have gotten a tune. I would like to put on the SS 100 sidewinder kit that comes with cams for high torque. I really like the idea of 100 hp and 100 plus torque. I'm not a racer by any stretch just a cruiser but I'm kind of over my friends pulling away from me with their Road kings, Street glides and Road glides. I mean I am 100 pounds lighter right? So I also like the sound of the screaming eagle pipes on it (amazing sound) and don't really want to spend extra money on 2 into 1 exhaust if I can help it. How much torque would I be giving up to keep the exhaust? Is that ok or do I really need to change them? Also do I need new cam tensioners and an oil cooler for this upgrade? What would you do to kick it up to this decade without breaking the bank and also keep the reliability? Also do I need to also get the frame brace or replace the engine mounts if I add torque- or can the old frame handle it? And how much about would I have to pay in to get all this work done?
You wouldn't really give up much if anything with the SE exhaust of that era, with the factory header it's really the best of both worlds. You get the sound of a 2 into 2 with the power of a 2 into 1. 2006 Dyna already has the hydraulic tensioners, they only did that on the Dyna that year. The cases are basically 96 cases with a bore for 88 cylinders and the heads are what basically later became the heads of the 96. Great year for the dyna! The 100 kit will drop and you'll want a good cam too, S&S 585 is a good Dyna cam or a Wood TW-555 is a killer Dyna cam. Hard to say what it would cost but the 100 kit about 1200, figure about 3 to 400 for a cam. Labor l am ball parking 2,000. Gaskets, oil etc, 300, and a dyno tune about 3 to 400. Total ball park guess l would say ridiculously high 4500. But indy shop with a can tune maybe around 3500.
@@GixxerFoo Sorry for my ignorance but what is "indy shop with a can tune?" Also my bike got the heavy-duty fork springs and new Ledged shocks in the rear. It has not ever wobbled -had it up to 85 few times. In your opinion will the extra torque flex this Dyna frame and create a wobble?- I read stories about that possible wobble- I have no problem-but I do not want to create a problem either.
GixerFoo, you mentioned easier starting regarding cams with the S&S kit. Would you review the S&S Easy Start cams that they have available that are supposed to make large cube, high compression engines easier to start and easier on the starter?
GixerFoo, what’s the horsepower and torque limit for use of Harley’s stock belt final drive? I’m planning on tearing down my ‘06 FXDWGI in November and send the heads, cylinders, and left crankcase half to Hammer Performance to have the cylinders bored, the heads CNC ported, and the machining done for Timken bearings on the crank. A cam plate/high volume oil pump and a set of relatively mild S&S Easy Start cams are also part of the plan. My concern is am I going to be pushing my belt drive beyond it’s capacity? I’ve got to quit watching your videos because I was happy with my stock bike before you exposed me to all these great upgrades!
Have that Zipper 95 kit with the 577 cam (ThunderJet equipped S&S G carb version) on my '99 Super Glide Sport, dyno 106.1 hp and 104.0 ft-lbs with S&S slip on mufflers. I haven't had it on a dyno yet with the Vance & Hines 2 into 1 exhaust set up on it now.
would you have any suggestions on a higher lift cams for a "06 FLHXI with the Harley 95" big bore kit installed, I run the Bassani true dual power curve exhaust with 4" Road Shark mufflers.
The case bore is smaller on the 88 so the drop on jugs won't fit the 88. You'd need to go with 95 inch cylinders and then a stroker crank. The 100 inch drop on kit the biggest one out there for the 88 with the stock crank.
At 100 horse you're good with the stock injectors, once you start pushing the motor up over 110 that's when it's going to be time to start looking at a bit larger injector. Too big of an injector can do more harm than good, here's a video about injector sizing that explains more ua-cam.com/video/PaiSNfnLfsc/v-deo.html
It's never a bad idea to upgrade to heavier spring or centrifugal spring assist. A stock clutch with some miles on it may actually slip, especially depending how you ride. If you got the cash get a good clutch basket and go all out!
The FuelMoto kits are really nice, they cost more but you get everything you need in one place. Boring cylinders with the right parts works very well too!
Can you give me a list of all the parts. Complete exhaust system , One hundred hot ride kit, Tuner.. What cams were put in the bike? Iam seaching for chop. Have 2010 ultra bone stock. Live in Darien WI so close for service. Looking for the exact same setup as this gentleman Ben. Please reply. Thanks Mark
Yeah they will bolt up and they actually flow a lot better, even the stock 103 heads would be a big improvement. The 100" kit is made to work with the stock 88 heads so the 103 heads will bolt right on, you'll just have to use late model flanges on the intake. You can plug the ACR's or wire them to the starter solenoid, maybe put some manual ACR's in there if you want.
Question about Big Bore Kits and a stock clutch. I have a 2002 Softail Fatboy I want to put either a Fuel Moto 98" or the S & S 100" Power Package on and I will also replace my heads. By increasing hp and torque I should probably upgrade my clutch. Fuel Moto has a variable pressure clutch that supports 130Hp/130Tq with OEM spring. Should I try it with my original clutch first or just go ahead and do something with the clutch when I do the big bore kit and heads? What clutch upgrades should I do? I don't know much about what all is involved and will ask the mechanic that installs the other upgrades I mentioned his advice. I value your opinions and advice a great deal. Thanks!
Thinking about getting the S&S power pack kit for my 88. I got the bike looking the way I want and have the Bassani RR3 with the Arlen Ness monster sucker already. Hoping for good results. Not positive but I believe the 100 inch sidewinder comes with the power pack
Hello, I have 06 ultra classic with 88 EFI it has 585 cams with upgraded plate fuel pump I plan having hammer's performance bore me out to 98 and there also porting my heads I was was hoping you could help me best cheapest way to tune as I am not savy with at all. Thanks
I was looking to do this with my 99 RK but there was no support for the MM fuel injection and I didn't really want to take out a system that was still functioning very well to retune it with a carb. Sold that bike and got a 2014 FLHTP and did the normal Stage 1 upgrades and am very happy with it.
@@GixxerFoo Power Vision thru Fuel Moto. Did intake, new head pipe and used mufflers I already had. I had the urge to do cams but after this upgrade bike runs great and has all the power I need.
It's hard to beat FuelMoto, l ordered my dad's Power Vision through them for his Vrod. They have been great to work with, l love how they already put one of their in house developed maps on there.
I love my 88 v-twin,even running motor with great balancing and also decent power but seeing this vid makes me want to jump to the 97,I’ve got 25,000 on my Heritage Classic(03),100 year anniversary
Hey Gixxerfoo, My ride is a ‘01 RoadKing Classic. Cams, pushrods, true dual exhaust, and I believe cam chain was swapped out and if my memory was better it probably includes some other items. Liked this video quite a bit, and it will go into my library. Although age is becoming a factor.
I just picked up a 2006 Road King. Interested in the 98" kit with 510 cams, my bike has a power commander v already. anyone know if the power commander will work with that type of setup?
You might be able to get a map for that setup from DynoJet, but it's highly recommended to look at a Power Vision. You'll get a much better tune with that big bore kit and cams.
Good day Great Channel 👍 I am planning to get a play bike after 10 years out of the saddle my age is 65 My rides will be under 100 to 150 km. I am mechanical inclined and built many metric sport bikes Looking at my old favorite shovelhead or a newer Evo bike around 2005 What is you recommendation Thanks in advance
@@GixxerFoo I was asking what you thought was the max end of rideablity for the average rider of an 88 I saw your other video talking about getting to 100hp is that your recommendation for a practical upgrade?
Nice onfo ..how about carburated . ?!? Is it possible . they runn any good the 05 carburated . or need a new carb and jets. Please let me know . i just bougth one 88ci 2005 nice bike has nice 2 to 1 hanes pipe
GixxerFoo..... You may know the answer to this question ..... If only pulling the heads on a twin cam , would I need to change the base gasket on the cylinder ? some so yes but theres not much info on this. I would love to pull my heads without pulling the cylinders , some people say the base gasket / o-ring won't last
That's tricky, it's going to be a risk depending on the age of bike and how long they have been on there. It's a good amount of work to get the head off and then back together only to have a base gasket start leaking. Personally if it's got some age and miles, I would go ahead and freshen up all the top end gaskets and change the base gaskets while I was in there. It's one of those deals that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and have to go back in.
I already encountered my first issue n the break in...may have a lil too much torque id like to believe...but honestly idk what happened..my pulley broke..all 5 screws..so ima drill n tap or "ez out" ....this thing is a monster...i ran down a stock m8 114 breakout ..i need a tune now. My ecm is locked with tts master pro...what can i donto start fresh get a new ecm..btw im the guy with the screaming eagle 103 with mild worked heads 543 reaper cams domed pistons fueling oil pump amd camplate...im unsure what to do next. I may be thinking too small...why not 124 if im have to crack the cases anyway..
Yes that would be correct , but, on my 88 I’ve found that the kits only offer the basic kit, and, I’m kind of lost as to what I need to actually buy, and, I don’t want to order parts I don’t need. I honestly think I could manage the install, but, my mechanic ability Belgians to fail the order forms like; do I need a install kit, do I need new bearing , can I use my stock cam plate and oil pump, if I buy the 100 sidewinder do I need new valve springs, should I by new heads or send them out to be reworked, which parts should be installed first. I think a video explaining this on a 96 or a 88 would be a very informative video.
You can still use your stock heads with the 100 inch kit, even the stock cam if you wanted to. It just wouldn't take full advantage of the added displacement. Valve springs are really dependent on the cam you use, cam manufacturers will specify if you can run stock springs or if you need to upgrade. Just depends how aggressive the cam is, now replacing bearings is all a good idea with a build. The stock cam plates are fine, but a billet cam plate adds more support but isn't really necessary unless you really ride hard.
I have a Early production 04 Road King custom converted to a stripped Classic. Carb motor CV 44 woods needle. SE manifold. S&S air cleaner back plate kit. 203 cams with Upgraded cam tensioner and cam plate & pump & bearings. I wanted to do heads however all the heads had too much running compression. SE ignition for cams and big bore kit. Now Harley has Factory ported heads that keep compression stock as 203 cams need to stay under 9.5 static . I feel this is a good upgrade for 88 or 95 milled motors. I really comes on around 60 mph. However t don't do much hyw driving. I don't want to have to upgrade my starter as it is sensitive to hot starts sometimes. I'm running a oil filter billet cooler which looks cool lol. Any thoughts 💬💭
You can get there with a bolt on 95 and using a Wood Cam. Depends on your year and if you're carb or fuel injection. Bump the compression to 10:1 with some mild head porting and it will bang out 100. 100 horse is a great number for Twin Cam, plenty of power and reliable.
I was looking at the "S&S 100/110" POWER PACKAGE FOR 1999-2017 HARLEY-DAVIDSON BIG TWINS" for my 88". It has everything I think I need. Upgraded oil pump, cam plate, and I really like the gear cams over chain. What do you think of this upgrade?
That's an awesome package, the gear drive system is very dependent on the shaft run out being in spec, .003 or less 😬. The gear drives are awesome and worry free, expensive upfront though.
@@GixxerFoo I would be hesitant going with gear drive cams on the twin cam 88 without upgrading to a new welded crankshaft or having the factory crankshaft trued and welded, I hear that even if the runout is within .003 that it may not stay there. I think I would feel uneasy about them on a stock crankshaft.
If the run out is within spec when it's installed l really haven't heard of many failures unless the run out just became atrocious. But by that time you've got some really serious issues.
I have an 2003 softail bored to 95" and 509 cams. I got 4000 miles on it until I tweaked the crank or counter balancers. That being said. I'm tearing it down now to get the bottom end rebuilt to include true, balance, weld, and plug crank. Also timken bearing conversion and rebuild of the counter balancers. Question... since I'm splitting the case I am considering boring the cases to accept 107 cylinders while keeping the stock 4" stroke. What is your opinion on this. What cam/head combinations work well with this 107 setup. Or would you stay at 98". Thanks.
The 98 inchers make great power and you don't have to bore the cases, just my opinion but 98's will run right up there with a 107. If I was going with a 107 I would go ahead and put the bigger crank in to get the most of it. You've got a good set of cams, Hammer performance can do a mild head port with a 10.5:1 compression setup in a 98 that will scream.
@@mikelovestoride2367 I've been tossing the idea of 107 full bore build since I have to have the crank and counter balancers worked. But after reading up on case boring I don't think I want to go that route. I could go for an s&s stroker crank and get more cubic inches that way. So I'm either gonna do that or stay 98". Stock 4" stroke. I bought a set of 2009 cylinder heads I'm gonna get worked to fit my compression and cam choice. I really think if I go 98". Head work. Cams. And 10:1 compression I should have a pretty good running reliable machine. Again, I'm not into wide open throttle big hp numbers as I dont ride there. I want my power in the usable range say 1200 to 5500 rpm. Any comments?
Question. I thought I heard you say the Fuel Moto cylinders had more cooling surface/fins early in your video, and then at the end you said S&S. So did you misspeak? Do they both have that feature? Am I a poor listener? Lol Thanks for the breakdown and information!
Nice info, Thanks. Question: I just bought a 2003 FXST Carbed w/ hooker headers, want more power so what about this plan. I'm thinking of the S & S 100 ci kit, S & S super E carb, 585 cams ? and entire cam chest upgrade, head work also. Do you feel this a viable plan or am i missing something. I want power but still have a daily cruiser without having to wrench on it constantly. Thanks for your help in advance and Take Care Brother..
@@GixxerFoo not currently looking for any. i have noticed that the 95 kits and such aren't listed for the early twin cams anymore. there has been a couple times i went to get smaller replacement parts for the bike in general that had to go aftermarket on due to Harley discontinuing parts. Im sure if i looked hard enough i could find anything. but at this point i think its best to stick with S&S for most things.
@@jurassichotrod4407 S&S is going to be a lot better than Screamin Eagle in my opinion. I haven't checked with the dealer but it's possible they've started discontinuing the 95 inch kits.
It's not a bad idea to upgrade the oil pump, the fuel pump and injector size will cover the displacements fuel needs. Compensators on the 88 were strong, the only issue from the factory was on the 96 for a few years.
I have a 03 FXD with 95in., Joe Mondello Heads, DarkHorse crank, Wood TW8G cams, Runs great but whenever I want to rebuild I'm going 100in. 4in stroke 4in bore
Im glad for this video. Im going to be having the 100 s&s kit installed and my local shop explained the difference much as you did. The bigger cc seems to pay on dyno. Im running a stock 88 now and will let you know how it changes. The 60ish hp it has now is pretty slow and disappointing. I did pipes and power commander then finally cams and its still needs more to be up to speed bike only 5 years newer.
The increase in bore is going to pay dividends in torque! A good cam with a compression bump is going to give you a serious horsepower boost! Best part is all that is a lot less expensive than a new bike you have something special when you're done.
There are several deals available doing the big bore kit, as of June 2022, that seem appealing. I have done the S&S 509G upgrade and am now considering whether to go with new cylinder heads or doing the bore. 97" is under $1,000 and 100" is just wee bit over that. My bike is a 2003 FLHTCI with 26,000 miles on it. I am willing to put another couple of thousand dollars into it just to increase reliability for a cross country trip. It has plenty of power and torque, for an old guy! I can do all of my own work. What do you think, new cylinder heads or the big bore kit?
Yup; that’s way I’m go’n - 🤠✊👍🏻👌 hd has the 4”cyls with steel liners that fit in the case spigots - they are for the 96 so you will have to hunt for pistons 4” stoke and rings for steel liners .
I’m thinking about ss509 for my 2003 heritage. But I need to know if it is required to have the bike on a Dyno after Cam change, or can it work without?
In the real world how would the 100ci kit ride? Going by the dyno chart need to be doing almost 4k revs before producing the same torque as stock, though the stock is dropping off from there?
With the right cam setup it would run pretty hard. Large displacement increases with the right cam setup can will produce big torque in a hurry. Especially with the short stroke of the 88's crank.
I have a 2003 dyna fxdl and thinking of doing a big bore kit. I was looking into the 100cc power package but I’m not sure if the engine would be able to handle that. My dyna only has 2300 miles on it , is it to early to even think of a big bore kit ?
That's prime time to get one done since your low in miles on that bottom end. Are those original miles on the bike or was the engine rebuilt and those are engine miles?
I was in the market for a dyna low rider for a while and found one in jersey with 7k miles 03 tc but it was sold instantly and then came across the one I have now so I jumped on ASAP.
Would you stay with a 95 inch kit or go with the 97, 98 or even the 100 inch Sidewinder bolt on?
As I’ve posted before I did do the SE 95 set up on my 2002 FXDL. I did add an oil cooler. The power is decent and the motor has been unbelievably reliable. I think if I was going to upgrade again that S&S 100 Sidewinder Kit looks mean and super easy. Also fairly cheap.
96" Twin Cam plus Sidewinder kit equals 110"?
The price of the S&S isn't too bad, it's not as good of a deal as the SE kit but it makes some serious power.
You are correct, they make one for the 96 and you can bolt on 110 inches.
I'll run my 88" against any displacement Harley heads/jugs
As many older bikers have always told me, I'm 66yrs old. The higher you go, the faster it blows. I'm plenty satisfied with 2002 deuce twin cam 88 gear drive 61,000 miles and still running strong!
Have you had to replace cam tensioner?
Everyone’s done that by 60k no doubt
Actually by 30 if your being safe
@@Anonymouso283it’s gear drive…. He said GEAR drive….
Excellent comment!👍
We're living in a horsepower upgrade age that 20 or 30 years ago we couldn't have even dreamed of.
Also, your channel focuses on the older motors and we get info here that is extremely important.
Thank you.
Right on! We're seeing horsepower numbers out of this 45 degree design we never thought possible now, well reliably anyway lol.
Had Kevin Baxter build my 88 to a 117 on my trike conversion. It runs great down the interstate at 70 & 75.
Kevin Baxter builds a damn good motor, I would trust that guy all day every day. I bet that trike flys now!
Enjoy this video. Glad to see that us 88ci people weren’t forgotten about.
Thank you, the 88 is the last of later design engines that you can still get a carburetor on.
Any Ideas?
That bike well tuned should be around 100 horsepower and torque, you might go with a little more cam if you're wanting more out of it.
Hammer does a great job on big twins too, a lot of people don't even realize they do work on big twins. They are reasonable to compared to these kits.
Here in central Japan I found a place that might do this (now that I am FINALLY got all the problems in my 2002 88 sorted) but its pricey. Im curious how much that's going to run you Harley Dave. It's a matter of whether the high cost here is worth it or not.
You'll notice a huge difference, it will be like a new bike.
👍 that's exactly what is so much fun about working on and riding Harleys.
I like the fact that you put the pricing in with these upgrades. Thanks again for another great video.
Thank you! The prices vary quite a bit depending on where you decide to buy it from though too.
(That's been my experience)
As far as I'm concerned you rank right up there with doc Harley.

@@GixxerFoo Thank you, may God alway keep you and your family safe and God Blessing ALWAYS 🙂
You definitely break these options down better than any other channel I've watched

You throw some head work in there like you've done and they will easily break 100hp. That's better than the average on any of the 103's out there.

Anything screaming eagle is the great value version of Harley Davidson parts
@@GixxerFoo thank you for the help! Sounds like I need a bore camera 👍🏻

That's the way to do it, not a lot of people know Hammer does work on big twins. They are really known for their Sportster exploits, it's a huge savings having them bore your cylinders like that. I like that they are up front about boring to a 98 being a one time deal, a lot of places won't tell you that.
@@GixxerFoo Why not just bore to a 96", leaving headroom for the next rebuild? 'Course, I'm financially strapped and ride a LOT.
That's actually very cost effective and Hammer Performance has a really good deal on bore jobs for Twin Cams.

Thank you, l appreciate that. I'll have to look into doing a podcast, l really hadn't thought about that before 🤔.
Thanks a lot I just got my first Harley road king with an 88 and looking to upgrade when the time is right 🎉
I'll keep my zippers 95c.i kit. 577 cams, S&S pushrods, lifters and gear drive cams. Larger intake & injectors and a Thundermax tuner. Definitely tire shreader😎
Dang that's a hell of a setup right there, that's gotta be a handful if you get out of shape.
Can you put 103 jugs and pistons on the tc 88 ,and then cam swap to 510 so cam
The case bore is smaller on the 88 so the drop on jugs won't fit the 88. You'd need to go with 95 inch cylinders and then a stroker crank. The 100 inch drop on kit the biggest one out there for the 88 with the stock crank.
Having a stock 2000 FXDL with carburetor; not FI will my carb being re jetted support 100HP???
Oh yeah, with a proper carb kit installed 100 horse will be no problem. Even with just jetting changes it will support 100 horse.
What would you recommend for injectors for 100 hp harley motor
At 100 horse you're good with the stock injectors, once you start pushing the motor up over 110 that's when it's going to be time to start looking at a bit larger injector. Too big of an injector can do more harm than good, here's a video about injector sizing that explains more ua-cam.com/video/PaiSNfnLfsc/v-deo.html
with the 100 inch Sidewinder bolt to a 88,
on do need to add a upgrade clutch?
It's never a bad idea to upgrade to heavier spring or centrifugal spring assist. A stock clutch with some miles on it may actually slip, especially depending how you ride. If you got the cash get a good clutch basket and go all out!
You should really investigate the Fuel Moto kit. Everything you need to do it right. I’m torn between boring my cylinders vs buying cylinders
The FuelMoto kits are really nice, they cost more but you get everything you need in one place. Boring cylinders with the right parts works very well too!

Hi, got a 03 electra glide standard, i want the S&S 100" sidewinder cylinder, will 103 SE heads fit to this set up ?? Runs S&S 509g cams
Got my 2000 softail with 95 SE and SS 509G. CANNOT find a dyno chart. All the 509 charts are for the 88.
Thanks!
I decided to go with the 98 S&S kit but i dont know what cams to go with can u help me out. Thanks
What compression are you looking at running?
I have a 2004 softail springer with an 88 TC. I'd love to put one of these aftermarket kits on there. Thanks for al the information, brother
Glad to help!
Thinking about getting the S&S power pack kit for my 88. I got the bike looking the way I want and have the Bassani RR3 with the Arlen Ness monster sucker already. Hoping for good results. Not positive but I believe the 100 inch sidewinder comes with the power pack
That kit will transform your 88, the short stroke of the 88 makes for one hell of a motor once you get them worked over!
@@GixxerFoo what’s a better cam for my 88? The 509 or 510?
Hello, I have 06 ultra classic with 88 EFI it has 585 cams with upgraded plate fuel pump I plan having hammer's performance bore me out to 98 and there also porting my heads I was was hoping you could help me best cheapest way to tune as I am not savy with at all. Thanks
I was looking to do this with my 99 RK but there was no support for the MM fuel injection and I didn't really want to take out a system that was still functioning very well to retune it with a carb.
Sold that bike and got a 2014 FLHTP and did the normal Stage 1 upgrades and am very happy with it.
It's hard to find anyone that can tune the MM system, what tuner did you use on your 2014?
@@GixxerFoo Power Vision thru Fuel Moto. Did intake, new head pipe and used mufflers I already had. I had the urge to do cams but after this upgrade bike runs great and has all the power I need.
It's hard to beat FuelMoto, l ordered my dad's Power Vision through them for his Vrod. They have been great to work with, l love how they already put one of their in house developed maps on there.
Im doing the S&S 100ci kit with 585 easy start cams. What would you recommend for jetting on a CV carb?
I love my 88 v-twin,even running motor with great balancing and also decent power but seeing this vid makes me want to jump to the 97,I’ve got 25,000 on my Heritage Classic(03),100 year anniversary
Any reason zipper performance did not make the list?
Hey Gixxerfoo, My ride is a ‘01 RoadKing Classic. Cams, pushrods, true dual exhaust, and I believe cam chain was swapped out and if my memory was better it probably includes some other items. Liked this video quite a bit, and it will go into my library. Although age is becoming a factor.
Could you send me a link if you have one to a good way to raise hp on a 96.. thanks coo video
Please post links to these companies .thanks
Straight up to S&S or Hammer Performance
Good day
Great Channel 👍
I am planning to get a play bike after 10 years out of the saddle my age is 65
My rides will be under 100 to 150 km.
I am mechanical inclined and built many metric sport bikes
Looking at my old favorite shovelhead or a newer Evo bike around 2005
What is you recommendation
Thanks in advance
At what point do you feel the “rideablility” is lost?
When you get some very big cams and a huge bore it can cause you some issues on the street.
I know old post but couldn’t find an answer in here. I have an 06 twin 88 with sSE stage 3 95ci is there an option I can do to build off this platform
Hey nice video I've watched 3x now lol wud.they 100 kit work well with 509 cams?
It would work very well with those cams, it's a bolt in and it will take advantage of the added displacement.
@@GixxerFoo thanks for reply. I split cases and up graded to timkens. Is a diff oil pump a must? Or factory one ok?
@@GixxerFoo ..... The bike is a 2000 Road King with 27,000 miles
I want 100hp and I have a 88tc fatboy with 60k miles on it what do you recommend
You can get there with a bolt on 95 and using a Wood Cam. Depends on your year and if you're carb or fuel injection. Bump the compression to 10:1 with some mild head porting and it will bang out 100. 100 horse is a great number for Twin Cam, plenty of power and reliable.
Would be nice for my 04 deuce. Change my cams already like to do the stage 3 kit now
If you've already got the cam all you need is some pistons and cylinders.
good explanation, I have an 89 fxr .. and I planned to put an 88tc on it .. and I see the advantage of reaching 98 in the future .. greetings ..
Why do you want to swap the Evo out of your FXR?
I have a 95 from an 88 and I need to do cams and heads
I was looking at the "S&S 100/110" POWER PACKAGE FOR 1999-2017 HARLEY-DAVIDSON BIG TWINS" for my 88". It has everything I think I need. Upgraded oil pump, cam plate, and I really like the gear cams over chain. What do you think of this upgrade?
That's an awesome package, the gear drive system is very dependent on the shaft run out being in spec,
.003 or less 😬.
Can the bottom end of the 88 handle the 100 upgrade?
@@GixxerFoo Thanks. And I'd save money too.
Yeah. I dont need much more power. That's how I broke it. Love the torque.
The 510 would be a better cam with the 95" the 509 is for an 88 and is a milder cam than stock, look at the intake closing #'s
What about Hammer indust,or machine shop.
Question. I thought I heard you say the Fuel Moto cylinders had more cooling surface/fins early in your video, and then at the end you said S&S.
So did you misspeak? Do they both have that feature? Am I a poor listener? Lol
Thanks for the breakdown and information!
What about stud pull?
Not a huge issue on the Twin Cam like the it was on the Evo.
Last summer I upgraded to the S&S 100" and love it.
But, in 2018 I went with the Fueling 525 cams. Thinking about upgrading to the 543.
i know this video is a year old but i have no luck trying to get screamin eagle parts for my 06 - 88
Do you have a 2006 Dyna?
@@GixxerFoo no its a nighttrain softail
What parts are you trying to get for it from SE?
@@GixxerFoo not currently looking for any. i have noticed that the 95 kits and such aren't listed for the early twin cams anymore. there has been a couple times i went to get smaller replacement parts for the bike in general that had to go aftermarket on due to Harley discontinuing parts. Im sure if i looked hard enough i could find anything. but at this point i think its best to stick with S&S for most things.
@@jurassichotrod4407 S&S is going to be a lot better than Screamin Eagle in my opinion. I haven't checked with the dealer but it's possible they've started discontinuing the 95 inch kits.
what about the compensator , fuel pump and oil pump? will they feed or be storng enough to cover that power change
???
It's not a bad idea to upgrade the oil pump, the fuel pump and injector size will cover the displacements fuel needs. Compensators on the 88 were strong, the only issue from the factory was on the 96 for a few years.
@@GixxerFoo i have one of those faulty compensators. Pain in the arse
What will a Mikuni HSR42 handle upto when it comes to displacement and hp??
Will the stock clutch hold this power?
With a heavy spring it will to a degree, it's not a bad idea to upgrade your plates and spring.
What cams did you use ?
So how did the build turn out?
There are several deals available doing the big bore kit, as of June 2022, that seem appealing. I have done the S&S 509G upgrade and am now considering whether to go with new cylinder heads or doing the bore. 97" is under $1,000 and 100" is just wee bit over that. My bike is a 2003 FLHTCI with 26,000 miles on it. I am willing to put another couple of thousand dollars into it just to increase reliability for a cross country trip. It has plenty of power and torque, for an old guy! I can do all of my own work. What do you think, new cylinder heads or the big bore kit?
Got a 14 vmax . 225 hp to rear wheel with pipe and tune
They took an already insane bike and made it even crazier when they redid it.
Yup; that’s way I’m go’n - 🤠✊👍🏻👌 hd has the 4”cyls with steel liners that fit in the case spigots - they are for the 96 so you will have to hunt for pistons 4” stoke and rings for steel liners .
It's really not a bad deal at all, if you shop around you can get those kits a lot cheaper than advertised. RevZilla has S&S products a lot cheaper.
GixxerFoo ua-cam.com/video/A1j1gQ5iaVM/v-deo.html
These will fit the 88 spigots and you can buy cyls together without pistons and rings $400
GixxerFoo right on ; I’ll check price ; but S&s @ $1500 is out my price range -
Yeah they aren't that much shopping around, retail price is high on S&S.
GixxerFoo I got a price on the pair of 4” cyls at Harley dealer for around . $450 . Add weisco pistons and rings another $300 I believe.
I’m thinking about ss509 for my 2003 heritage. But I need to know if it is required to have the bike on a Dyno after Cam change, or can it work without?
It’s like your reading my mind... I’ve been meaning to ask you this exact question...thanks for the info...I’ll keep you posted on my build
That's awesome! Please do, keep me updated on your progress.
I would probably put an aftermarket crank in an 88 before I did any kind of major power increase.
Original miles , I got her out the show room in Pennsylvania with 831 miles 20th anniversary dyna low rider
That's incredible, Low Rider has always been a favorite of mine. I can't get over it only has 2300 miles.
I was in the market for a dyna low rider for a while and found one in jersey with 7k miles 03 tc but it was sold instantly and then came across the one I have now so I jumped on ASAP.
A cousin of mine has a 02 dyna low rider and he has motor work done to his , I think he has a 95 big bore kit in it now
