Glad you figured out a good solution in the end! I’ve watched so many videos on how people record cockpit audio and everyone seems to find their own solution. For me I bought the nflightcam cable which includes the GoPro adapter dongle with it. When I plugged it in and it worked perfectly first time I was amazed frankly after everything I’d heard! A bit expensive for a cable but can’t fault it for convenience.
I have the exact same issue. Drives me crazy, as soon as i plug in the cable to the gopro, there is no sound at all, nothing. Will try this, thank you man and happy landings.
Timely bit of knowledge that will benefit action cammers globally. It’s one of those FAQs I come across a lot in our circles, which you kindly helped me address months ago. Thank you again.
I genuinely found this out after flying with you. I still can't find anything specific as an answer online and I'm sure everyone must have come across this problem. Thanks Dollar.
Oh the joys! Glad you managed to figure it out in the end and good of you to share the solution. Since I fly a flexwing, recording direct to camera wasn't a great option for me, so I record mine separately and then have the fun of synching 3 cameras with the mp3 audio. Ah well, it works with a bit of perseverance!
I admire your dedication and commitment Terry, the amount of leads and adaptors we all need these days seems endless and often confusing. Plus, I suspect there's a certain amount of product lock in and forced obsolescence etc. Thanks for all your hard work bringing us enjoyable videos👍😊✌️
Thank you as always. Not a proper video this time but I'm working on a long one for next week. I'm no audio expert and this bugged me for years and now I know the solution. I'm excited for you to see the next one :-)
This is useful Terry. The solution to the issue I was telling you about found with my setup (splitter with voice recorder) after upgrading to the lightspeeds was a variable resistor (basically a volume control), the audio output was basically too powerful with the light speed ANRs and distorted the audio, fixed now. It wasn't a problem with my passive Sennheisers.
Hey, I think Im having the same problem as you are referring to. I have a gopro setup and a jack from intercom into the gopro. But the sound is way more distorted when I review my footage, except for some of the audio that was made by other aircraft/atc. Do you know how I can make it less distorted?
Great tip, I was thinking about buying a digital audio recorder and using it to record the in-flight audio and then adding it to the video in post production as a more reliable audio source, but the gopro audio is still working... mostly.
Cheers Bill, I like to record the audio to at least one GoPro in a multi cam setup mainly because I'm trash at synching it all up. A proper audio recorder always sounds better but as it's either engine or crackerly intercom I don't suppose anyone would be that bothered.
Some of the simplist solutions are the best. I've used the lav mic in the ear cup for lots of flights. I suppose I'm lucky with my PM100 vlog modified headset as I can just take the line out to the Gopro audio adapter. I'm glad you got yours to work in the end.
You are the god of audio! I gave up after buying just about every available extra. When I do use audio these days it's with a separate recorder. Great video again, well done
@@ShortField Look forward to that, I'm thinking about trying to follow all your landings (well at least some of them) and I've found a few unlisted recently you may want to try out, although one truly isn't for the faint hearted!
I am just tight and use a GoPro clone, which did not have a audio port and opened it up took out the built in mic and soldered in the jack socket, then I could plug into a "Y" lead with an atenuator and a mono TRS to TRS lead. It appears to work okay for one of my mad mods.
Thanks Algy, you are possibly the only person I know who would do that and make it work. Engineers always want to make things better. Brilliant. Thank you for the watch.
I am sure people will find this useful Terry. You know that I went down the route of Sony sound recorder but then there is the issue of sound sync but each to their own. Thanks again for the upload. 👍😎
It’s interesting how many different approaches people have to recording the cockpit audio. I tried the mic on the ear cup and wasn’t keen. Since then I’ve used a splitter cable into the panel, and an external Sony dictaphone. Seems to work well and it cost me about £40/50.
@@ShortField The club owner doesn’t want his aircraft on UA-cam without viewing it first, and doesn’t want the gopro attached to the aircraft. His planes so fair enough I suppose. Just need to figure out a solution.
Never had a problem with NFlightCam myself, but I had to have the Hero version of a GoPro for it to work. There are some GoPro models that don't support USB-C audio which are listed on their website. I had the same problem with the GoPro 7 silver I had and then found the reference on the website about it.
Thanks for the watch, I think this a real specific issue. I put mine together myself so incompatibilities are possibly down to me. Thanks for the feedback and comment Glenn.
Hey Terry thanks a lot for your video! Ive been going crazy as to why my gopro wasn't picking up cockpit audio, just bought some TRS cables to try out. Quick question, you plug in one end of the aux cable into the Gopro (using a usb-c adapter), and the other end into the Bose A20 control module correct? Just want to make sure Im not messing this up. Thanks!
Hi Terry - Loving the vids, just started short field flying and still can't get over landing in a quiet field. Question if you would be so kind about GoPro and Multicam. I just can't get the videos to sync in Premier Pro. Can you help please?
Thank you, just on my way to the airfield and saw your comment. For cockpit cams I try and clap really loudly with them all on BEFORE I start the engine, I then try and leave them running all flight and record everything (I use a couple of usb power banks for flights over an hour). In Premiere Pro I put the first video file from each camera on it's own layer in the timeline (normally have 3 cameras) I then expand the waveforms for each layer and match up the peak of the clap for each layer, works pretty well, I then put all the following clips (files) in sequence for each layer and then save this and edit out what I need in a new timeline. As for external cams I just match them as best as possible. Hope that helps?
I cannot get my GoPro Hero 9 to work with my Bose A20, even after buying the GoPro NFlight cable. Having been in contact with GoPro they advise buying the Media Mod which tongue in cheek they say will work with my headset. Passive headsets work but not the Bose A20, apparently GoPro removed the microphone mod in 2020
Hi Terry. Firstly hello from a fellow North Weald pilot (RV9) - great channel and the content fascinating, nice job - just subscribed ! I gave up with my GoPro a while back, the battery life just wasn't good enough. So swapped to a Garmin Virb Ultra 30, guess what - battery life not that much better but an inbuilt GPS and accelerometers along with Bluetooth I like it. I had hoped to pair the Virb with my Bose headset over bluetooth and while it records the headset microphone perfectly, unfortunately it doesn't capture the cockpit audio. So I'm back to a Garmin audio cable now.
Hey Jon, I keep losing faith in GoPro and hope they will sort the problems with the next one, which I then go and buy and then suffer the same or new problems, they are so frustrating. Cheers Jon maybe see you over the field.
There is a proper cable for go pro that connects to aircraft headset (expensive tho) and one connects to aircraft , I use it all the time and you can watch my videos ,and hear ATC and normal chatter :)
They are a bugger those jacks. Finding out the two and three line ones are different solves a world of audio problems. Who would have thought it. Good luck with your audio now……
Hi! I have a hero 7 with just the USB input (via a 3.55mm jack converter), will this work for that too? My NFlightcam cable has worked maybe 1/20 flights so far.
My bigger pain with the GoPros is that they are almost impossible to start or stop in flight. The remote control is an absolute piece of cr*p and even some apps don't work well. Unfortunately, the battery die always to early and hence, shooting with GoPros is always a pain
I agree they are a nightmare. Even after all these years they still overheat, crash, won't start and are just unreliable. Saying that I've not really found anything better.
