Short Field
United Kingdom
Приєднався 2 січ 2021
Hi, my name's Terry Kent and I'm a private pilot based in the UK with a passion for all things aviation. Currently I fly a small single engined Pipersport out of North Weald in Essex. I have created this channel as a resource to share my videos of take-offs, approaches and landings at the airfields I visit, many being tricky short grass fields with little information elsewhere, I also do equipment and flight reviews and anything private pilot related. Thanks for viewing and I hope you found this channel interesting and helpful and I hope you would look at subscribing so as not to miss any future content. Thank you and fly safe!
Exploring an Abandoned INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
I fly into and play on a massive runway and then get to explore an amazing abandoned airport with loads of history.
Lots to see and some strange findings at an abandoned international airport in the south east of the UK. I also use the huge disused runway to see how many times I can take off and land in the length available, it's a pretty interesting result.
Some come and join me in this fun packed episode.
The airport is Manston in Kent and I'd like to say a massive thank you to the airfields General Manager Gary Blake.
PLEASE NOTE THIS AIRFIELD IS NOT AVAILABLE TO VISITORS WITHOUT PRIOR PERMISSION.
My name is Terry Kent and I am a General Aviation PPL private pilot operating out of Andrewsfield Airfield EGSL about 25 miles to the north east of London in the UK. Short Field is my channel focused on the lighter side of General Aviation including flight and airfield reviews, equipment unboxing and review plus all things private pilot related. I use various cameras to record my videos including GoPro and Insta 360 and stills and edit them in Adobe Premiere Pro, I am an animator as well and often use animations to describe situations more clearly I use Blender and Adobe After Effects for these. I always attempt to post my videos in the highest possible quality, normally 4k.
I fly a 2011 Pipersport two seat single engine aircraft that is also known as the PS28 or SportCruiser in the USA (America) it is know under the FAA as an LSA or Light Sport Aircraft and can be flown on a very basic license. In the UK it is a Part 21 airplane which requires a full licence but it's generally cheap to run, affordable maintenance and great value for money. It cruises at 100 to 105 knots and has superb short take off and landing or STOL capabilities. I visit farm strips, back country and short airfields, some of them dangerous and I try not to crash :-), as well as international airports and try to learn something new every time I fly.
I fly VFR and IFR as well as visual and instrument approaches.
My videos may give helpful information to pilots but please remember these are just for entertainment, I am not an instructor nor should anything shown in my videos be used for real world aviation, also the airfields I visit may have totally changed or even closed since the making of the video so always consult the latest information for your country.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a ‘thumbs up’ and leave me a comment in the box below, I love to read them and I also like to hear what you like or dislike about my video. Please share it with anyone you think would be interested and I'd so love it if you ticked SUBSCRIBE and DING THE NOTIFICATION BELL to be informed by UA-cam when I upload my next video. Thank you so much.
If you are interested, my video content is available to purchase as stock footage, please contact me via my email address in the ABOUT section of my channel for more information.
If you like my content (I don't get any revenue from this channel at all) you could buy me a coffee but no worries if you don't want too, I'm just chuffed that you are even interested in my videos, and if you ever see me at any airfields please come over and say 'Hi' and I'll probably buy you a coffee.

My CRAZY Flight in an ANCIENT aeroplane!
Переглядів 48 тис.Місяць тому
From 0-60 mph in just 2 seconds and climbing at over 3,000 feet per minute - my flight in a 65-year-old wooden glider is nothing short of insane! In this video, I take my first-ever flight in a Slingsby T21 glider, affectionately known as "The Barge." With an open cockpit and park bench-style seating, this vintage aircraft feels more like a relic from the past than a modern plane, but don’t let...

In hindsight this was a bit stupid, birds are always something you need to be aware of and as with any animal assuming they will be predictable is a recipe for disaster. Airfields: EGSL Andrewsfield, Essex to Fen End Farm Airstrip, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. I refer to my frie...

It's September 2022 and a young flight instructor takes a passenger for a gift flight experience in his flight schools PiperSport (Sport Cruiser) aircraft, not knowing that on their return, just 45 minutes later, they would both be dead. The NTSB final report determines that the accident was caused by the passenger losing control of the aircraft on landing, however, was the aircraft design the ...

These two aircraft ended up in the same piece of airspace at almost exactly the same moment. Why did this happen? In this video we take a look at a go around and Air-Prox that almost ended up as an aircraft accident between a Beagle Pup and a Cessna 172 at Popham Airfield in the UK. Let's learn some lessons from this so we don't get into the same situation. My name is Terry Kent and I am a Gene...
One of the scariest things I've done in aviation.

IF YOU NEVER TRY YOU NEVER KNOW! I've had some really scary moments in aviation and some of them I've documented on this channel. However, I've never been much of a speaker (you can hear that in all the ummms and arrrgghhhs I make when talking to the camera), so when I was invited to talk at our recent aviation show and I madly said yes I had a few sleepless nights worrying about it and at time...
But how close is Flight Simulator to real world?
Переглядів 29 тис.4 місяці тому
Microsoft Flight Simulator is an awesome piece of software and comes incredibly close to re-creating flying within the limitations of a home computer or X-Box. However, there's one major element that is missing and for me it makes a big difference to the realism, especially when flying small light aircraft. As a real world pilot I want to show you what I mean in this video and demonstrate how t...
Flying into a closed airfield where planes went to crash!

This massive disused airport in the south-east of England had a unique wartime emergency role as well as being at the front-line in D-Day and the Battle of Britain, RAF Manston in Kent was listed as one of the airports deemed suitable as a Master Diversion Airfield which means it could accept aircraft in trouble and has had a fair few crash landings. In this interesting video I get to fly into ...

How long did this TINY AEROPLANE take to get over 2 MILES HIGH?
Переглядів 8 тис.6 місяців тому
Flying to FL110 or 11,000ft in a tiny little plane is fun, it's about as high as you can go without oxygen, you're up in the low flight levels where the airliners live. In this flight from Fenland Airfield in Lincolnshire, we see how long it takes to climb from sea level all the way to FL110 and while we're up there I'll have a little airliner style snack. to withdraw your feet like that is a natural reflex when nervous or insecure or loosing balance. if suddenly scared or surprised it will be done with much force, i suspect this could have been the cause, and that the pilot and passenger never knew what forced the plane up like that before it was too late. the passenger maybe caused it first with his hands and then when otdered to drop the control his feet went hard towards the control below
Hats off to the reviewer, not just raving about it.
I'm not a CFI but in my aircraft the right stick comes out for newbies in the right seat (Vans RV not a pipersport). It would not take much for a panicked passenger to kill you when you are close to the ground.
In fairness, you would be able to solo after 31 hours.
Given the cost, you're better off with a clapped out C182. Comparable performance and *much* more utility.
Most private pilots think they are driving a car. That's why they die and kill their passengers! And these idiots fly over my house. Glider pilots are safer by far. VFR pilots try to fly in bad weather and die. 30 hrs of flying means you are not qualified to fly anything. All pilots should be instrument rated. NTSB is a Joke!
I miss winch launches, Cheap and fast for training.
Awesome vid! I'd love to have a go.
Single-pilot aircraft with full fuel. There had to be a compromise somewhere.
All very nice I'm sure if you can afford a new plane like this, but I will add that my antiquated V-35 Bonanza was 194 mph true airspeed. It's an old but proven airplane but buyable for a imminently more affordable $45k dollars. I'm old school so I think all the new light singles are grossly overpriced the last 40 years, thus the move to experimental kit planes.
Rocketship ?????
All relative, fastest Microlight on the UK scene atm.
That elevator trim tab is enormous!
idk why anyone could ever feel comfortable with just 31 hours of training...that's absurd.
What a nice impression! I see the glider has a Dutch registration. This takes me back to my time on EHHV (Hilversum), where I worked for a banner towing/sky-writing/sight seeing company. EHHV is still a three runway grass field and I love and support it. It also houses a flight school, a glider club and a parachutist-club. At busy summer days we had three parallel uses of the active runway. The runway itself, the double winch at the back of a truck for gliders (gliders also taking off behind Piper Cubs from the runway) and... our banners, lying parallel to the runway before taken into the air by our Piper Cubs and Cessna's). Our (one of two) AT6 Harvard taking of to write 7UP in the skies over the Dutch beaches and the tower getting really busy at the end of the day when the sky-divers started floating down from the skies. Thanks for bringing me back!
If a lottery ever hits, and I am still coherently existing, I would be thrilled to get one of these aircraft!
so same thing as a car racing sim, very good at simulating most of things, cant simulate the physical side of it...pretty obvious if you ask me
No medical required , ideal for people with heart disease high blood pressure and epilepsy
Why not box in the control bar , then feet can never ever foul the bar and influence the controls ??? madness.
Trim Buttons should be slightly recessed.
I don’t understand why a first time passenger (not even a student pilot yet) was allowed to touch the controls at all
Totally agree, a slippery airframe requires an experienced pilot, better to start with something slower and forgiving, which is why 152's are ideal. Even Piper Tomahawks, which were specifically designed as student trainers, had tricky handling at the limits, and earned the nickname of "Traumahawk". The more slippery the airframe, the more critical the flight envelope becomes, as any experienced pilot will confirm. Very pretty plane, but not for a low time beginner.
That wouldn't happen.
Wow what an opinionated, judgmental, and self righteous bunch of comments - even someone whining about a swear word or two. Pathetic. ShortField did what they needed to do for THEIR circumstances. None of us were there. Impressive they even took their time to respond to these comments more courteously than was deserved by the arrogant commenters.
Thanks Mike but you know what they say “opinions are like a-holes, everybody’s got one” thanks again sir.
I used to fly those, and the Kirby Kadet MkIII at R.A.F West Malling in the early '70s.
How can it be that easy, all the remoaners tell me we are stuck in this island and cut off for ever from the EU utopia.
The huge runway was originally built to be the size six standard RAF runways each lit by different coloured lights. This was to enable the recovery of damaged bombers returning from Germany during WW2. It also has a fog dispersal system called FIDO, this involved a concrete trench each side of the runway with a pipe with holes in it a mixture of petrol, paraffin & diesel was pumped down the pipe and set fire to. This provided light and raised the local dew point to disperse the fog, it was not cheap to run burning about 50,000 gallons of fuel per hour.
That's a beautiful little aircraft. Wish I could own one!!!
The design of the aircraft has nothing to do with this tragedy. Everything went normally until the last minute when it seems that the student pulled back on the stick with all his strength. You said yourself that the stick has a long lever arm, so an accidental nudge by the student's foot would not create this result. It was very easy for the instructor to see what the student was doing, so when he screamed "let go" three times it's clear that the passenger had his hands on the stick and was pulling back so hard that the instructor couldn't counteract him even though he knew he was going to die if he failed. All rational analysis points to this being a deliberate act. Everyone talks about the dead as if they're angels from heaven. They aren't. They're all human beings, as broken and nasty as any other.
I got my instructors rating at Manston. Taught by the former Red Arrows pilot Ted Girdler who owned TG Aviation based there. Extraordinary person and pilot. RIP. Manston was one of the very few places where you could practice Precision Approach Radar (PAR) approaches where you are talked down the glidepath by an RAF controller. Only basic instruments and a functioning radio required. Good to know how to do in an emergency.
Like lots on here this was our introduction to gliding. For me it was a warm evening in 1975 above sealand with the See glistening silver in the distance. Wonderful.
ATC flashback
I never had a family and still can't afford to learn to fly or get an aircraft.
I can remember doing a detachment there in the early 70s with R.A.F. victor refueling sqd. 🛫
Was it not used as M.D.U.?
I'm not familiar with that abbreviation, but you might mean MDA or MEDA. RAF Manston has been both of those.
Great video! This took me back to 1980 when I was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford. While there I took my first glider flight at an airfield near Bicester. The scenery and the towplane pulling you along and then the near silence once you release took me right back to that day. I also completed my first, static line skydive at Weston on the Green. Thanks for reigniting a great memory for me.
nice vid - takes me back to ATC days in the 60's. Proper Bird flight. One of the greatest thrills of my life doing 3 solo's, The silence ( except wind rush when insufficient rudder in the turn) Also taking control of the Enclosed Slingsby at Dunstable Downs.
A great bit of history around an airfield I did fire training at, when in the RAF back in the 80's for the Fireman's strike. Looking forward to the next video.
Interesting thanks, my father underwent his RAF Fire Service training there, including abseiling over nearby cliffs. I can see him now in his silver asbestos suit and axe hanging from his belt. How times have changed, including firefighting!
Looks like you had a better visit to the museum than my visit, no staff wanted to interact with visits
With this as a dedicated freight hub there'd be no need to expand LGW or LHR.
Lovely vid again Terry. What a place, I'm so pleased it's opening again (mainly because I now live only 10 miles away!). What a great thing to be able to say... "I pushed the 'red button", and you even have video footage to back it up 👌🏻 🤣
Great video as always Terry. Very interesting and a fun way to use the runway! 😊

the grunting sound, possible the passenger had some kind of seizure?
Back in the 1950s we used to go to Margate for our annual holiday. As a young lad I was thrilled by the sight and sounds of the USAF stuff that suddenly appeared over the top of the cliffs, any dogs on the beach literally went barking mad!
So sad to see a abandoned airport in such a bad state. A shame it did not stand the economic bad weather. Well I think it were economic reasons to close this airport. And the KLM F27 is also history. KLM replaced all Fokker with Embraer jets. Btw we have also an abandoned airport terminal. It is at Lelystad Airport abt 20 km north east of Amsterdam. It was a GA uncontrolled field, but was transferred into a full airport as addition to Amsterdam Schiphol airport. The terminal and parking areas were built and the small tower (with only info services) was made higher and an ILS was installed with complete ATC. That ATC is still there but the passenger planes never came. The final political decision still has to be made, however there is a lot of opposition against the airport, and it looks that the current new government is against the opening with passenger flights. But we will have to wait for the final decision on that.
Can’t wait for it to reopen!
Great stuff. Love those grass airports. Ive had 2 open cockpit airplanes and I DID NOT enjoy flying either one; too much reality of height for me. Do you guys have to pay to land at every airport ? Or whats the deal with that ? Thanks !
I fly in Iowa by the way !
Flew these regularly at St Athan (ex-1344 Sq. ATC, Maindy Barracks)....lovely memories
