I struggled getting great audio from my flights. So I figured it out! Hopefully it can help some of you out. Some of you may have noticed I had to reupload this. Sorry about that. Found an error I couldn't ignore.
Hey, thanks for the video. I have the GoPro Hero 7 Black, it’s on the latest firmware and software and I also got the audio adapter. I switched the settings to line-in audio, and still hear engine sound in my video. Can you please tell me if I’m missing anything?

I have a cheap action camera that’s not GoPro. I have no idea why on earth I never thought about putting the mic in the headset to catch ATC traffic and my voice. 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ Thanks for teaching me this most common sense thing. 🥴 Lol.
Damn this is ALL I asked for. From every video I've watched... I guess they thought i was joking because I'm a dj and av tech and should know about audio inputs but I'm a beginner. Thank you for this!
I accidently bought an inline audio inserter (to play music basically) last year and just tried it. I thought it was just an inline splitter to 3.5mm jack I could plug into my lav recorder... welp, I just ordered the correct one you recommended. Thanks!
I found that plugging a mike into the cockpit gopro and stuffing the mike in a set of Bose works best for me. No synchronising audio and I like to hear some cockpit noise. When on squelch you don't just have dead air.
@@flywiththeguys Yeah best audio is as you show with a splitter. Ambient sound to another gopro would save a sinc. A wired lav mike you can put anywhere. The trick is would be where. Goal would be engine and prop noise. Under the panel? Engine cowling?
You sir are the real MVP. I was sitting here pondering how I could record audio for my flight sessions. All of this information is new to me. Yesterday I purchased a GoPro Hero 9. My headset is a Bose A20 Bluetooth, dual plug, straight cable. Do you know which cables I will need for this setup? Also I liked/subscribed 👍🏽.
Thanks for joining us! The inexpensive splitter, 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter, and aux cable should be all you need. Or, if the plane you fly has additional audio jack in the back seat, you can just use the 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter and a aux cable. And the GoPro audio adapter of course. Buy that from go pro though, cheaper there. OH and make sure to plug the adapter into the camera and set the audio to line in. =)
@@flywiththeguys Thank you for the swift response. At my flight school we fly Citabrias, Cessna 172’s, and PA-44’s. Is there any other method to use which would eliminate the multiple cords? I do not care for parts pricing. I just want the best overall quality. Last question, which software/application do you use for edits?
@@pilotrobinson107 You could just record into the voice recorder and line the audio up in post. Only requires a visible hand clap after everything is recording. I used the free version of davinci resolve for the longest time. Great program.
@@flywiththeguys awesome! Love the content. Keep it up. I personally am pursuing my PPL now. And hope to go IFR after. So all the extra resources and advice you put out is very much appreciated!
You might have fixed my issue. I have been getting unacceptable white noise from my GoPro audio connection. I have always had the GoPro plugged into power to the plane's USB plug too. I will try it next time without being plugged in. Might not fix all my issue, but it is a theory worth checking out
2 things. If you're plugging in from your intercom, set the gopro to line in. The intercom is usually too hot for the gopro mic input and will generate noise. Second, use the battery. The power from the plane can create feedback from the alternator. Good way to check this is to change RPMs in the plane. If the white noise changes pitch, it's the culprit. Using a external power source fixes this problem completely. Good luck!
Definitely gave this a like! I have been having a T O N of issues getting clean audio recording with my nflightcam setup and my Hero 7. I had NO IDEA the hero 7 had a “line in” Audio option. What about the hero five session? It records audio from a line in audio source, but it sounds like crap and there doesn’t appear to be an option to select line in audio.
Glad it helped! I didnt know it until I made this video and found someone making some obscure comment in a forum buried by google. As far as the session, I’m not sure. I’ve never used one. I would check the specs to see if it’s an option, otherwise I would just use a voice recorder. They work really well actually.
As with all audio products, some headphones and mics will sound better (live and on audio recordings.) Which aviation headset/mic seems to be better for audio recording? (Great UA-cam channel, by the way!)
I typically use the GoPro adapter input method. A lot of the audio quality in the aircraft comes down to the Intercom system being used, Regardless Of headsets and mics. I fly with the Bose A20 mostly, or another Bose product. It would be nice to figure something else out to get really good audio in the cockpit, but it’s such a noisy environment.
With the digital audio recorder, they make a cable that is 1/4 inch to 3.5mm, so you don't really need an adapter. And if you forget to clap, it's works to listen for the click on the video when you turn the avionics master on. Usually when you do that, there's a "pop" in the audio that you can sync the two up.
That trick is going to be amazing if I'm honest. As a student pilot, the last thing I want to do is waste my CFI's time fiddling with a damn recorder. I would rather have everything setup post checks and walk arounds before she shows up on the apron.
@flywiththeguys Thank you for this! I've been wondering how to do this. I can't believe you've had this available for 4 years and I hadn't seen it before. I'm a student pilot and approximately 1 lesson away (according to my CFI) from first solo. I'd LOVE to be able to record that flight so I purchased the components you suggested to be able to record through my Rode Wireless Go II mic and my Samsung S24. I was able to us it to record audio on a recent less as "proof of concept," but got a significant amount of electronic "noise" on the recording. I wonder if you've had any experience with this and what solution (e.g. some sort of inline electronic noise filter) you might have found to combat this. Any other ideas are welcome as well! Again, thank you for the content you produce and share with the aviation community!
When you plug into the RODE it's trying to power a MIC into the intercom system. That's probably where the feedback is coming from. I'm not sure of any adapters that can help with that. Try recording right into the phone and see if that fixes the problem. Thats why in the video I was saying to switch to line in. This turns off powering a mic, which eliminates feedback, blowout, and electrical interference. Second to that, the radio signals in the plane could be the culprit, interrupting the wireless signal. This makes me want to try it out with my wireless setup!
@@flywiththeguys Great thoughts. I'll try this. I thought plugging the adapted headphone line into the "line in" port on the RODE would eliminate this, but you're probably right about the inherent interference. May have to go dig out the *really* old GoPro and try to figure out the battery issues there to go that route instead. Thanks again for the content AND for the feedback (no pun intended)!
Hi! Great video and thanks for sharing :) I have a question on the audio splitter cable.. on amazon I can find the stereo cable version and the mono cable version.. I should by stereo or mono? Do you recommend this recording configuration (audio splitter cable + audio adaptor (the gold one) + aux cable)? Because I can find also a cable which is already manufactured with all the right plug (this is the pilot cable pa80i). Thank you and greetings from Italy 🇮🇹
@@morkshop That's a good question! Most intercom systems are Mono so you typically only get one channel, but there are some that are in stereo. Regardless, both will technically work, but just get the stereo one. If you're making videos, you can copy the single channel over to the other and it'll sound like stereo.
I have started using 2 audio sources. I have had at least two flights where the audio crapped out and that is infuriating. I finally upgraded to the goPro cable which I think was WAY overpriced but it also means less syncing in premier.
I actually had a broken GoPro adapter. I started running my audio through the recorder. Then I had the adapter replaced. I still use the Sony though for secondary.
@@flywiththeguys The other thing I started doing is running audio to the recorder from an unused audio jack in the backseat. Out of sight out of mind and less risk of it getting moved around when I jostle cables in flight
Thats how I use the recorder now, in the back. I did find out (the hard way) that on some new audio panels, they can turn off ATC radio transmissions to the passengers. So passengers, typically in the back, don't hear ATC or talk over the pilot when they push to talk. Kind of defeats the purpose of what we're doing, but just something to look out for.
Just Plane Silly hope that the GoPro is actually working. I have had numerous situations where either the Gopro decided to quit or the “overpriced “ audio cable came loose. Ended up with no audio or video from that camera. There is no indication on the GoPro if the audio actually recording, unfortunately.
Thanks for the video! Which setup did you use in the last part of the video just before you guys did the 5 test? Minute 6:00. Just before Tiffany did the test. Thank you!
I was using the direct audio to the GoPro 4 for that one. But in my videos I typically use the GoPro audio adapter to the GoPro 7, and the small recorder for backup.
Audio recording a flight absolutely saved my ass when I had to make a complaint regarding some ATC procedures at a controlled airfield that were flat out dangerous. If I hadn't had that, they wouldve thrown me out.
I usually fly recording audio no matter what. It's kind of like those people who always drive with a dash cam. Lucky, ATC is always recording transmissions in their airspace. Mark the time and frequency, then call the ATC tower and ask to speak to a supervisor. They can pull the digital recordings and verify things. The recordings are kept for about 15 days. I've had some fun run ins with ATC, just remember they can be under a lot of stress.
@@flywiththeguys I asked for that and was promptly ignored! It's a small airfield here in the UK which has a bit of a corrupt ownership. I'll be very hesitant to fly there again. The recording (and camera) saved me from them retaliating, they have a reputation for doing so! Stress is okay, but when an aircraft explicitly calls asking for help and you leave them for nearly 10 minutes on their own, after repeated calls clearly asking for assistance, you've not really done your job. I have a huge amount of respect for the vast majority of controllers, these guys were being ridiculous.
@@smokingspitfire1197 Thats too bad. If you were within the US there is action you can take, but since you're out of it, I dont know the regulations and such. Glad you were able to cover yourself though.
fyi: your Y splitter (with different colors) is stereo split out, isn't the best for mono signal. They sell true mono splitters also, which have same color ends.
I have the N-flight cable and the GoPro adapter for the Hero 6. If the Hero 6 is in the GoPro "cage", which as far as I know is the only way to mount the camera, there's no way to plug the cable into the camera. The cage blocks the access to the port. I've had this stuff for two years and I got frustrated with it and stuffed it in a closet. I guess I could use my Zoom audio recorder and synch to that. But that's just another box taking up space. I fly for fun not frustration...
Thank you!! Do you know if I were to choose the headphone jack adapter option, if I can still record video on my phone at the same time? I have an iPhone 13
You should be able to record video and audio at the same time. You’re going to need the 3.5mm adapter and a TRS to TRRS adapter too. I haven’t looked at this video on so long I can’t remember if I mentioned that.
Hi, how did you record the audio using the Bose Pro flight series 2 headset. That audio was really good when you are speaking. What's the best way to record with that headset.
You mentioned to use line in on the GoPro but the guy who owns Nflight mentioned for me to use standard mic. Have you tried both standard mic and line in?
They both work, but in my experience with several recording devices says to use line in. The output from the plane is rather loud, so audio can easily get blown or have constant feedback with the wrong settings. Using line in fixes these problems.
Great video. Do you know if you can use the aux cable that comes with the Bose A20 plug it in both the headset control and your smartphone to record audio and video? They both fit. I tried this earlier today. It didn’t record any headset audio. I’m not sure if there’s a setting or if it won’t work. Thanks for any help.
Hey there, you may have already answered this but @ 1:45, is it safe to say that if my headset ( Kore Aviation KA-1 ) has a 3.5mm Jack, all I need is the Aux cable? Will plug into smartphone to record audio. Already got an app on my phone for that. Loving the vids, keep it up!!
Thanks for your complement! I've learned a bit more since making this video. A lot of those jacks are meant for Aux input for music or audio from an iPad. BUT, because of how they're wired, they can also act as MIC outputs because the mic and aux are both wired to the speakers in the headset. So whatever you hear through the headset can "pass through" the port to a recording device. This isn't always the case, like the Bose A20 have a Aux port on the box attached to the cable. This is fed to a logic board so its not wired directly to the speakers, thus it cant "pass through" to a recording device. Hopefully that makes sense. So in the sense of that headset, it's possible it could pass through. It's a simple headset design. But I can't guarantee that it would work unfortunately.
@@flywiththeguys Hey thanks so much for getting back to me. I fly at the end of the week and if it works with just that, I'll reply back with an update.
@@flywiththeguys Hey there heads up, it did not work with just the Aux from phone to headset so will look into one of the extra wires and recording from one of the back ports.
Just ordered that set up this morning. If I am using Bose A20 connected to iPad with sky demon will I hear the skydemon callouts in the video? Eg “entered runway 10”
Going with the GoPro option. I want to have video as well as audio so I can see the take offs, landings, and what I’m doing with the controls etc. Also so I can hear my instructor in the recording and use it to study.
Thats a good plan. We made a video on recording in flight video too, and what you'll need. ua-cam.com/video/WbNq8BGNqiU/v-deo.html Go with the training position we talked about in there. Works the best for students.
Thanks for the tips! I tried recording through my iPhone, using a third-party recording app (Voice Record Pro) and the splitter/3.5mm cable/3.5mm to lightning adapter setup. I ran into a couple issues: 1. My iPhone and recording app both won't recognize any audio source through the lightning port. 2. I can't hear anything through the headset speakers when both the headset and the audio cable are plugged into the splitter, but strangely, at the same time, I can hear music playing from my iPhone. It's almost like the lightning port is acting like an output and refuses to be an input. I think the problem may be with the 3.5mm cable, as it is TRS and not TRRS, but I'm not sure if that's all I'll need to make this work. Maybe I'm overcomplicating things a bit and should've just gone with the NFlightCam... Any thoughts?
You're really close! You need that TRS to TRRS adapter to make it work. It aligns the mic inputs properly, otherwise the phone thinks the input is just a set of headphones and outputs to it. BUT, I have seen people struggle getting it to work right. The Nflightcam cable works really well if you want to keep using your phone, but for the same price you can get a voice recorder.
@@flywiththeguys Thank you for the help! Any thoughts on why using the splitter would cause my headset speakers not to work? Would it be because my phone is "outputting" to the splitter?
I think you're talking about the GoPro audio adapter. You can buy that directly from GoPro's website. So from the go pro to the headset jack: GoPro> GoPro Audio Adapter> Aux Cable (3.5mm Each End)> 3.5MM to 1/4" Adapter> 1/4" splitter or direct to headset jack. Hopefully that makes sense. I should add this to the description.
I recorded audio yesterday with a splitter from the plane jacks and to the Bose A20 and to a Zoom recorder. I had the audio on the Zoom (similar to the Sony) set to auto level. My voice to the ATC was perfect but his was severely distorted and way, way hot to the point of almost not understandable. So I'm thinking the level coming from the airplane is just to hot. Have you encountered anything like this. I'm thinking maybe set the recorder to manual and lower the gain severely but it seems that will reduce my voice gain which is fine now. Ideally,, it would be nice to have 2 audio tracks to edit. Your thoughts. Do you manual adjust the Sony or leave on auto? thanks. Great info BTW.
Yes, the audio coming from the plane is a bit overpowering and can easily become distorted on recording devices. On my GoPro's and Sony I have to set the input setting to Line In. This fixes the problem completely. Most Zoom Products are capable of this. If it's set to Mic, it typically boosts the signal, where it will not if you use Line In.
THX for the great video! I got a problem that i use an adapter bought from 'Pilot Communication USA' which is for Smartphone with 3.5mm audio output. And i got Iphone X MAX, i used a lightning adapter but it didnt work at all. Phone still goes with its own sound input. Pbbly you know how to fix it though?
I’ve found most cables work great on android, not so much on Apple. Something to do with how they are wired to let the device know it’s a microphone input. I use NFlightCam products for this and have never had a problem. It’s actually where I learned why some products don’t work. But, you may have better luck using a voice recorder. You’re welcome to message me over on Instagram or Facebook for more questions on it. Happy to help.
@@flywiththeguys Thx for help im gonna try another cable maybe. And just for fun Ive seen people just just put the microphone box of an original Iphone earphone into the Headset Earmuffs and it work quite well hhhhhhh

Try snapdrop.net OR share a folder on your PC and grab it with the files app. Google recompresses or encodes files differently when uploaded to their servers, usually killing the quality. Highly recommend not using a cloud service for file transfer.
How to record audio from Bose a20 headset using my iPhone ( I want to also record the footage from iPhone so I want to get footage and all audio from iPhone. Is there any way to connect to the headset and plane to work and do this?
Hi ! Thanks for your videos ! I have a question though. I fly a single seat aerobatic A/C, so there is no intercom (i.e. when I speak to myself, I can't hear my voice through the headset, I only hear it when I speak to the ATC while pressing the PTT on the stick). I have a Bose A20 with bluetooth. Do you think of any possible way to record my voice, and not just the com exchanges with the ATC ? Thanks a lot !
I know exactly what you're talking about and unfortunately there isn't to my knowledge. I've seen some guys take a lav mic and attach it to the mic boom on the headset to get it. I think the Delta Zulu will record everything, but I havent played with it enough to say yes or no. I'll be doing some testing soon.
The iPhone has been a pain for me in the past. The only cable I’ve been able to get to reliably work is the one from Nflightcam, but you still need the little headphone jack to lightning port adapter.
So I am a new student pilot, and i recently purchased the Bose A20’s with Bluetooth. Would it be possible to connect it with my phone and just start recording or will it not work that way
You glossed over the final connection to phone. Most phones no longer have a 3mm female jack leaving only Bluetoooth or USB-C for android users. Sucks no one on UA-cam seems to specify the connection from start to finish for a phone.
If you use the cell phone way, the splitter is between the mic jack so it means it only records the voice of the person talking into that mic? so not the ATC or the other persons in the airplane or am i wrong?
i know this is an old video, but i have the $100 adapter for go pro usbc (i have a go pro 9) and it doesn’t work. i’m going to have to try the voice recorder method with 3.5mm. i’ve tried every tip video on youtube and i can’t get the usbc to go pro to record radio audio at all. hopefully the voice recorder will work next time
I know the 9s had some issues with the audio adapter when they were first released, doing exactly what you explained. I even had the issue with the audio adapters I had and my 9. Things started working after I updated the firmware. TBH I ended up selling it in the end because they removed the ability to select line in instead of mic, mic blows out the audio. That could have been completely fixed by now though. I shoot with 7 Blacks right now in the plane. Anyways, update the firmware through the gopro app on your phone and let me know if that fixes the problem.
Glad it helped! Not much has changed in the way of recording intercoms over the years. I keep looking for new ways to do it myself. Get even better audio.
Fly With The Guys just about to get a go pro hero 5 so I can start recording my flights and hopefully within the near future record my audio as well :) thank you!!
@@flywiththeguys but if the sony audio recording device takes the 3.5 mm or whatever phone size jack can you just buy the phone splitter instead of the splitter as adapter?
@@noah5889 Depends on the plane. I just use a 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter and a aux cable. Then plug it into the back intercom. Only really need the splitter if you're limited on ports.
Hi! I recently just bought a DJI OSMO Action 2 camera. I tried to record cockpit & ATC audio using the camera by connecting a 1/4” TRS to Dual 1/4” TRS Female splitter, a 1/4” TRS to 3.5mm Headphone adapter, and a 3.5mm to USB-C camera adapter together. Somehow, it still used the mic on the camera, not the audio from my Bose A20. What would you recommend for this case?😭
I only have one theory on it. The universal 3.5 to usb c cables are actually TRRS. So, you may need a TRS to TRRS adapter to make it work. Otherwise the pins for the mic won’t line up, and the camera may not recognize a mic is connected.
@@flywiththeguys Thank you so much for the suggestion! The audio finally went through. However, there is another issue with the audio. After I turned on the master switch & avionics in the plane, the recorded audio (on my DJI Action 2) sounded crackling. I have no idea what is that about... I tried to google it online but most people use GoPro for their video in the cockpit, so there was no useful information on my camera online. I was wondering if you know how to fix it? Thank you again!
@@FlyWithLambo On the gopros and other audio equipment you need to use Line to avoid distortion. The only other fix to this is to turn down the audio on the intercom and radio. The signal can sometimes be to hot and overpower the cameras input.
Good question. I would assume because it's not an intercom system, which is where you would hear yourself so it can be broadcast to others. Running the audio cables through something like this would fix that - www.ebay.com/itm/265336234711?hash=item3dc745a2d7:g:XpgAAOSwCFZhVNp0
I do that now when recording video with my phone, but it’s the same thing. You need the lighting to 3.5 mm adapter, a TRRS to TRS adapter so the phone sees it as a mic, then a 3.5mm female to femal adapter or coupler to plug the TRS adapter and aux cable into, and then whatever you need from the video to connect the audio from the panel. Hope that all makes sense. All the parts are on Amazon. OR, you can pickup an Nflightcam cell phone adapter. That may be easier.
Hey! I am a little late to the party, but do you have any idea if the Bluetooth function on the Zulu 3 function will record audio from the headset while capturing video on the phone?
I know some devices will look to the mic for input, but I think they have to be in an active capture state, like a phone call. BUT, I have no idea. =) You're just going to have to try it. You don't need to be in a plane to figure it out though.
For an even lower tech and cheap solution I just connect one of my Bluetooth earbuds (Jabra) to my phone, plop it into my muff and record the mic audio from the earbud to Voice Memos
@@pgnandt It’s not to talk on the phone, I use my phone to record a voice memo of the audio in the earmuff. With the earbuds connected to my phone it uses the built in microphone of my earbuds to pick up the audio
I have a Cessna 150L and I use a sigtronics transcom 2 intercom.. it has an audio AUX out. Can I hook that to my go pro 7 with the audio dongle and charging adaptor?
GoPro put some secret sauce into the audio adapter. It, and only it, will work. You cant even use a USBC extension cable with it. It won't work. You have to use the box and plug it directly into the GoPro.
I tried using my GoPro Max but it didn't work and after some research I found out they are not compatible with external mics. Then I tested using my iPhone's recorder using the aux input (plugged into a aux to lightning adapter), and no success there either. Seems like the only way the iPhone captures external audio from the headset is through bluetooth, but still it only captures my voice, not the whole radio. I hate the fact that with so much technology, they still give us a hard time to do simple things like recording external audio.
I did that too. Was frustrated when I found out. And the Iphone one has to have a TRS to TRRS adapter for the phone, and sometimes that's finicky. If you want to use your phone, checkout the adapter from nFLightCam. - amzn.to/2XUyxHO
Can anyone advice how to record intercom audio when Im recording video with my iphone 15? I have nflightcam cable and gopro jack adapter. It worls fine. But I cant figure out a way with my iphone 15. Tried several usb-c to 3.5mm jack but wit no luck. Thanks
You may need a TRS to TRRS adapter in between the AUX and the USBC to 3.5mm jack. Unless your nFlightcam cable has TRRS to begin with. It sounds to me like the adapter you have from nflightcam is TRS. TRS=3 post TRRS=4 post on the 3.5mm adapter. amzn.to/3uWNOIZ
It's just slightly different so it wont work with a lot of cages and mounts for the 5-7. Marginal improvements over the 7, but geared more towards vloggers. I would stick to the 7, which I'm about to buy another.
I don't believe it does. None of the GoPro 360 cameras have audio input to my knowledge. Honestly, a cheap voice recorder like the one I showed is a great alternative.
I just bought the Go Pro 9, a jack splitter, the 3.5mm mic adapter from go pro and a cable from 3.5 mm jack to the 6,35mm jack for the splitter connection. Now I noticed the ATC is fine and crisp clear. But the spoken intercom audio between me and the instructor is very very cracked, and noisy. Any solution for this?
Your intercom volume may be to hot. Turn your radio volume up, and the intercom down a bit. See if that helps with the audio. Also, I haven't played with my 9 as the primary audio recorder yet. Are there options to choose what type of input it is?
@@flywiththeguys I will defo try this next time I am flying. What I noticed on play back though, during flight I lost all my headset comms / they faded out, then all of a sudden the playback on my go pro 9 footage is fine, the moment I plugged in and out the headset comms audio came back but the go pro footage audi went to noise / crackling audio again (and mono instead of stereo) Might be a thing in the aircraft headset connectors then? Or is it something to do with a cheap splitter? On the gopro 9 is a setting with line in , mic + , Mic normal etc.

In a bunch of my videos I actually add airplane audio from one of the other gopros for ambient noise. =)
This took a whole lot of editing. Thumbs up 👍🏻 thanks very informative. I just got a gopro9 and i cant wait to record cockpit audio
Thanks for watching! It was a rough one, but fun because tiff and I got to go flying together. =)
AWESOME ... THANK YOU for sharing.

I problem. Glad you liked it.
Can you do a video on your recording equipment for in flight? How you mount it? Mounts you use? Etc.
I’ll add that one to my list. I’m still figuring a lot of it out.
@@flywiththeguys awesome! Love the content. Keep it up. I personally am pursuing my PPL now. And hope to go IFR after. So all the extra resources and advice you put out is very much appreciated!
Considering documenting a full training series for PPL and IFR. Thoughts?

Great guitar.
@@flywiththeguys Indeed....
Awesome video thank you so much! Just one question, are we plugging the cable into the MIC or HEADSET input of the recorder?
Headset side. the 1/4" plug.
I appreciate the help! I’m getting great footage with cockpit audio with my GoPro 8!
Awesome!
It's best video comparation recoding methods. Thks!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for your video. I love this. Very informative. I think the GP4 gave the best sound. But I love the content.
I mostly use the direct to camera stuff for all my flying videos today!
Truth on the cable! But those guys are 40 to 50 dollars. This setup is much less. We had the nflightcam cables in there.
That trick is going to be amazing if I'm honest. As a student pilot, the last thing I want to do is waste my CFI's time fiddling with a damn recorder. I would rather have everything setup post checks and walk arounds before she shows up on the apron.
Finally!! A helpful video with clear instructions and direct links to items I need to make it happen.
Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Please explain recording both ATC and my transmission audio on a Boeing 2 jack setup.
Thanks again for the content AND for the feedback (no pun intended)!
ok so basically it will record all comms audio everything from ATC to passengers on intercom? with one splitter jack? pretty sweet
Yep. Anything you hear will be picked up by the recorder.
Fly With The Guys that is awsome!! Thanks for the handy tips
I’m flying a Piper Pa28.. ;)
@@morkshop That's a good question! Most intercom systems are Mono so you typically only get one channel, but there are some that are in stereo. Regardless, both will technically work, but just get the stereo one. If you're making videos, you can copy the single channel over to the other and it'll sound like stereo.
Fly With The Guys thank you! ✈️
What a great job you do, you are the best. I love all your videos.
THANKS!
Thank you! Could you recommend any video trimming software?
I can't, sorry. I'm not aware of any that I currently like.
Are you able to connect the audio recorder directly to the headset auxiliary jack (lightspeed zulu)?
I think the Aux Jack on most headsets in input only. I would double check the manual.
I switched to Sony audio recorder with great results
I’ve loved mine. Especially when training.
I was really curious about this, thanks.
Hopefully it helped!
@@flywiththeguys I've since moved airfields and airplanes, for the best really! Now I get to fly a Comanche rather than a Traumahawk!
fyi: your Y splitter (with different colors) is stereo split out, isn't the best for mono signal. They sell true mono splitters also, which have same color ends.
I know what you're saying. When a device of mine records in mono, I just duplicate the audio channel into stereo in my editor.
I use these guys. You have to remove the door though. Works for the 5,6, and 7. www.amazon.com/dp/B06W9FW894/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qXUDEbD74ZADS
Is it possible to connect a Bose A20 directly to a camera or Phone via AUX?
The best audio I get is from the gopro adapter or the voice recorder.
What not to like . So much helpful.
So glad!
That port is an input only. No output to other devices. Would be nice if it was in output though.
Thank you from my heart 🙏🏼
You are so welcome
Awesome video. Really appreciate it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully it was helpful.
Just ordered that set up this morning. If I am using Bose A20 connected to iPad with sky demon will I hear the skydemon callouts in the video? Eg “entered runway 10”
Whatever is piped through your intercom system to your headset normally, the recording will pickup.
Which "audio" gets included when you use this method? radio plus everyone wearing headsets or..?
Whatever you hear in the headset is what is recorded. =)
I need to try this!!
It really works. =)
I ran into a couple issues:
Can I use the splitter and audio cable with the go pro 3.5 mm adapter
If I read that comment correctly, yes. Just throw in a 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter to go from the splitter and you'll be golden.
WHat adapter is needed to go from Hero 7 to the clunky box to your headset jack?
@@flywiththeguys okay well I didn't know I could set it to line in I'll have to check that out thank you
So the splitter works well on the C150? Can you help me know please? Thanks!
I used the splitter, 3.5mm to 1/4 adapter, and aux cable to a recording device for everything these days. Especially in the 172.
I love it, thank you!!
So glad! Hoped it helped.

Try snapdrop.net OR share a folder on your PC and grab it with the files app. Google recompresses or encodes files differently when uploaded to their servers, usually killing the quality. Highly recommend not using a cloud service for file transfer.

Hi, thanks for your tips, do you have a solution for recording atc and voices on insta360 x3 ? 🙏🙏
Actually, they have an adapter to plug in a 3.5mm jack. I’ve never used it though.
What about the lightspeed flight link app?
I believe that will work. I haven't tried it personally. I like to use my phone for other things in flight.
Thank you.
No problem.
Ngl this is SOOO helpful thx
GOOD! Glad it helped.
wow, can i record with my cellphone? just need a audio jack?
Depends on the phone. iPhones need an adapter or the cable from NFlight. I've had great luck with the stand alone audio recorder though.
This is awesome! Thanks so much!
Glad you like it!
Thanks, very helpful! Would have been even better to have a slightly longer test and without that annoying background music!
Yea.... we've learned a lot about music since then. We're thinking of remaking this one.
Ok so I use the Bose A30s and I have a spare iPhone. Any way I can use these together for video and sound?
The iPhone has been a pain for me in the past. The only cable I’ve been able to get to reliably work is the one from Nflightcam, but you still need the little headphone jack to lightning port adapter.
So I am a new student pilot, and i recently purchased the Bose A20’s with Bluetooth. Would it be possible to connect it with my phone and just start recording or will it not work that way
Not really. Lightspeed does though. You would want to get that adapter from Nflightcam to do it right.
You glossed over the final connection to phone. Most phones no longer have a 3mm female jack leaving only Bluetoooth or USB-C for android users. Sucks no one on UA-cam seems to specify the connection from start to finish for a phone.
Hi..and with GoPro max , is it possible to record???
Unfortunately no. =(
if i use my cell phone, would i just use voice memos for the recording software/app?
You can do that. I've used it a few times. Just like the external recorder a bit more. Keeps my phone free for other activities.
If you use the cell phone way, the splitter is between the mic jack so it means it only records the voice of the person talking into that mic?
so not the ATC or the other persons in the airplane or am i wrong?
oh wait the splitter is on audio jack, not on the mic jack?
You'll get it all. Because you're splitting the headphone jack you'll record anything you hear. =)
i know this is an old video, but i have the $100 adapter for go pro usbc (i have a go pro 9) and it doesn’t work. i’m going to have to try the voice recorder method with 3.5mm. i’ve tried every tip video on youtube and i can’t get the usbc to go pro to record radio audio at all. hopefully the voice recorder will work next time
I know the 9s had some issues with the audio adapter when they were first released, doing exactly what you explained. Anyways, update the firmware through the gopro app on your phone and let me know if that fixes the problem.
very helpful! thanks
No problem. Glad you liked it.
Thank you so much!! Very helpful (commenting July 2020)
I am confused What will i need to buy to record voice and video using my phone ?
If you wanted to use your phone, just the phone cable from NFlightCam. Quick and simple. It's pinned properly so the phone knows it's a mic input.
How would be a GoPro Session?
The gopro session still works with the gopro audio adapter and works in much the same way, but I've never used one so I'm not an expert on it.
@@flywiththeguys Thank you! I’ll give it a try!
@@FlyWithLambo On the gopros and other audio equipment you need to use Line to avoid distortion. The only other fix to this is to turn down the audio on the intercom and radio. The signal can sometimes be to hot and overpower the cameras input.
I fly ultra light using a 20 headset plugged into a handheld ICOM radio. How do I set up to hear my voice in the ear pieces while powered on
Good question. I would assume because it's not an intercom system, which is where you would hear yourself so it can be broadcast to others. Running the audio cables through something like this would fix that - www.ebay.com/itm/265336234711?hash=item3dc745a2d7:g:XpgAAOSwCFZhVNp0
I want to go from the plug directly into an Iphone 13 pro max How can I do that and control the level of the audio
Hmmm.... Now I need to make a new video! 6 Ways to record cockpit audio. LOL! Thanks for the recommendation. =)

Not from the input. Those are typically isolated.
Perfect, amazing, thanks so much!
Glad you like it!
What if u have the wire u showed for the phone on the go pro with a 3.5 mm to usb-c adapter. Will it work still or do u need the box?
GoPro put some secret sauce into the audio adapter. It, and only it, will work. You cant even use a USBC extension cable with it. It won't work. You have to use the box and plug it directly into the GoPro.
@@flywiththeguys dang that sucks. I thought I had a perfect alternative figured out lol
@@flywiththeguys thank you!
Hi, I got the Sony PX240 and when plugged in I don’t get anything pop up reading audio in
Not sure what I’m doing wrong !
Yours may be in the menu. Check the manual for it. May be something simple.
Any news with GoPro8?
It's just slightly different so it wont work with a lot of cages and mounts for the 5-7. Marginal improvements over the 7, but geared more towards vloggers. I would stick to the 7, which I'm about to buy another.
Which is the size of the splitter?
Should be in the link. I think it's the 1/4" one.
what iPhone app did you use to record the cockpit audio?
In the video we used Voice Memos. I believe it comes standard with the OS.
Hi I'd like to order Gopro Max for cockpit but I'm not sure if it works with aviation audio power cable, is it possible ?
Can you link sony recorder to macbook
The recorders have SD cards or can connect through USB to download the files. The one I featured used a cable.
@flywiththeguys I can only seem to download with the desktop windows...but macbook doesn't have any apps..my Sony recorder doesn't have a memory card..
I have been trying to record using that cellphone cable but haven’t been able to, have an iPhone 13 pro max and the adapter tried it with blue tooth out of my headset and without it and still isn’t recording anything but bunch of noise, with bluetooth it records my voice only, what can I do? Been using the flightlink app to record
The cable from NFlightCam? We talked about a lot of different cables so... But the most common thing people miss is the TRS to TRRS adapter. If you have a NFlightCam cable and its not working, return it. Sometimes cables don't work. =(
Yes the NFlightCam cable to record audio with cellphone, it’s the original, going to try it with another cellphone if not I’ll return it
I bought the GoPro Series 3 | 4 Cable by NFlightCam, but my volume is really quiet. When I play it back on my PC, I have to have the volume maxed out to hear it at all. Is there a way to increase the the recorded volume?
I would try increasing the volume of the intercom in the plane. See if that helps any. Let me know though, I’m interested.
@@flywiththeguys It is a 152 with only the volume on the radio. I'll try to crank it up and turn my Bose20s volume to Zero.
