What Happened to Airplane 2: The Sequel?

- When 1980’s AIRPLANE! proved to be a massive hit, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year - up there with THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and Best Picture winner KRAMER VS. KRAMER - it was inevitable that it would get a sequel. But how often are comedy sequels good anyway? When have they ever really recaptured the magic and the laughter of the original? Well, AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL gave it a go…by basically being the same movie. Except this time around, ZAZ wisely opted out, leaving the production without the strong leaders who reinvented the spoof genre. Instead, they got the guy who wrote GREASE 2, one of the most notoriously awful sequels ever!
So, strap in - no, not to an airplane but a space shuttle - as we find out: WTF Happened to This Movie?!...The Sequel!

It's still far funnier than 99.9% of 'comedies' released in the last two decades by Hollywood.
It is funny. The ending not so much ..
The whole sequence on the moonbase, where the actors activate the doors by imitating the Star Trek door-sounds and Shatner steps through the door that was supposed to be a TV-screen is one of the funniest scenes in any movie ever!
Why the Hell aren't I notified about these things!?
"It was Striker who couldn’t handle it. And he went to pieces.”
“Andy went to pieces?"
"No, Andy was the navigator. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued."
"Howie came unglued?"
"No, Howie was a rock! The best tailgunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued."
"And he bailed out?"
"No. Andy hung tough. Buddy bailed out. How he survived was a miracle."
"Then Howie survived?"
"No. Afraid not. We lost Howie the next day."
"Over Macho Grande?”
"No. I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande. Those wounds run pretty deep."
Over Macho Grande?
No I don’t think I’ll ever get over Macho Grande, those wounds run pretty deep
Yeah. Imagine trying to translate it to other languages. I remember watching it with a lector and did not get the joke. Only couple years later when I learnt some english, and watched the movie again I ROTFL-ed.
Ap2 is funny.
Love that back and forth.
Best scene in the movie
"Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya? We've all got our switches, lights, and knobs to deal with, Striker. I mean, down here there are literally hundreds and thousands of blinking, beeping, and flashing lights, blinking and beeping and flashing."
That's my 2nd favorite Bill Shatner meltdown behind him on SNL telling the Star Trek superfans to get a life.
Bill Shatner should've done comedy sci fi
@@sumthingwikked4257I have seen William Shatner many times, he can be hilarious. He has a great sense of humor.
On a related subject, James Doohan mentions in his biography he attended classes at the same school as Leslie Neilson.
Small world indeed!
@@mattrodgers4878 "James Doohan mentions in his biography he attended classes at the same school as Leslie Neilson. "
Not surprising that they were both Canadian.
And Flashing and Blinking and Beeping and Flashing and Blinking and Beeping!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The escape scene where the tracking light turns to a spotlight for a guy singing "love boat" is the funniest gag in either movies. And Shatner is the best too. Undervalued classic.
Yep and "that guy" was Jack Jones, the original singer of it. Which makes it even funnier. And Shatner rocks it. And the coffee cup/cigarette scene with Bridges and Chuck Connors. Cracks me up every time.
That’s one of my favorite parts 😂.
i watched the movie with my parents recently and none of us could figure out what the gag was...like, we recognized the song but none of us ever watched the show. is there some specific reference, like with the brick wall or something, or is it just completely random?
"We'd better get to the tower Lieutenant."
"We have no tower".
"No tower?"
"Just a bridge sir."
" why the hell aren't I notified about these things?" classic shatner.
I like the joke with William Shatner coming through the door after you're made to think it's a view screen.
Best gag in the film.
Personally, I enjoy Airplane 2 just as much as the first for its cast.
I’ll say this - the cast is trying and Shatner is legit funny.
I love both but I grew up watching both, It was always on TV.
I think it being a riff of the original makes it meta and hilarious.
Airplane 2 the Sequel is a tough sequel to love but a hard movie to hate.
The DANGER VACUUM gag was as funny as anything in the original 😂
The music makes that scene so much funnier 🤣🤣🤣
I'll watch Airplane II over Grease 2 any day.
I dunno Grease 2 is a bit underrated
Hamlet was tormented by his mother's incestuous relationship with his uncle. I admit to loving Grease 2 and its silly soundtrack. That said, I LOVE Airplane 2! I watch Grease and Airplane on the regular from start to finish. Airplane 2 is never on but I need to take out that dvd and watch it again! Grease 2 is just silly.
@@jbjacobs9514 I'm with you...I love them both.
Oh Lordy... Airplane 2 is billions of times better than Grease 2. I'd rather floss with Razor blades than ever watch the cinematic cringefest that is Grease 2. .
Grease 2 is one of only 3 musicals I've ever even remotely liked. I can't stand the original Grease, haha. I know I'm well in the minority.
It’s just as hilarious. I love both Airplanes equally. Classic comedy! The part with the vacuum that’s trying to kill him gets me every time 😂.
The Love Boat guy, William Shatner and “we’re also out of coffee” are some of the funniest gags ever.
Are you telling us absolutely everything?!?
Not exactly, we're also out of coffee.
PANIC!
I dig Airplane 2. Every scene with William Shatner is absolute gold. That gag when he is on the screen and then pops out of the door from that weird room is a winner. Fun fact the Airplane movies were called Flying High here in Australia.
a very good actor shatner
I really enjoy Airplane 2, and have watched it more than the original. Most of the space specific/sci-fi jokes really land for me, and everything Shatner does is gold.
Looks like I picked the wrong week to give up watching JoBlo’s videos.
lol. Nice!
Never give up JoBlo videos!
I can watch this movie for Shatner's part alone.
My sister and I grew up with both movies so it will always have a special place in my heart.
Haven't seen either Aiplane in decades, but watching this makes me realize that most of the gags i remember are from the sequel.
Both Airplane 1 and 2 were huge parts of my childhood. I probably know every line in both lol. They are both awesome.
Sir these lights are blinking out of sequence well get them to blink in sequence.
In Australia, Airplane! was titled "Flying High" and the sequel was released under the titles "Spaceship!" and "Flying High II" on VHS here.
I think it's funny that this was rated PG so us kids could see it at the time and it's full of nudity drugs and language we loved it 😂
Right? Those early eighties PG movies are hardcore.
"Can you give us your impression of Mr Stryker"
"I'm sorry, I don't do impressions"
This movie was great. Equally as good as the first and better at times as well. But the first one is still great and needs to be watched to get a few jokes in the sequel.
It's not great, but it was worth it for the sight gag of Shatner on the view screen, that then opens it up, to reveal that he was just standing there . I love that moment. I think I may have seen this film before the original as well, which I imagine elevates it for me
And don't call me Surely!😂😂😂
Shatner you can't be serious. I am and don't call me Shatner.
Ironically - we’re interviewing Shatner today for another channel.
There just might be a few of us who will forget Macho Grande!
I liked it. 💗
It’s been decades and I still haven’t gotten over Macho Grande
Airplane 1, Airplane 2, Police squad, and Naked gun basically have the same jokes.
Wow,wasn't even aware that there was an Airplane 2 lol...
Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes (to this day that line is still in my repertoire)
Yes!!! Such an undervalued joke!
A kid visiting the cockpit was the least nutty thing in this movie. That happened all the time in the 80s.
I got to visit the cockpit (in-flight) of a C-130 Hercules transport when my family was traveling from Turkey to Germany in 1982. (My dad was USAF)
Yeah, but did the pilot ask the kid if he like movies with gladiators?
@@randysmith9841 lol, not that I remember. I really only saw the back of his head. It was another crew member that was escorting the few visitors who took turns going up for a look.
The girlscout fight scene was absolutely my favorite. Thank you Bee Gees!
I wish that in addition to William Shatner making his appearance spoofing Captain Kirk the producers had also got Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelly, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, George Takei, Grace Lee Whitney and Majel Barred to lampoon their roles too on Moonrise Alpha Beta in Airplane 2.
"Over Macho Grande" was an amazing scene
Shatner walking thru the door that we thought was a computer screen, killed with everyone I watched it with! I am still laughing from the scenes that are shown in this video!
Everything described as bad in the first 11m25s of this video is exactly why i love the movie.
But what exactly Is $27.2MM?
Is it millimetres?
It's similar to a "tad."
The original airplane was a remake of zero hour from 1957. I wonder what this could be a remake of, or if it's just derivative of the original airplane and just beat the original jokes and situations to death?
The William Shatner "I'm coming up" gag always gets a laugh out of me.
I absolutely adore this film, along with the first. Yes the gags were rehashed, but they were also funny. Let's not forget William Shatner's masterclass in scene-chewing. I don't give a rat's butt what any critic says, I can watch this flick over and over and still laugh my ass off. Who could ask for more?
The fact that part 2 is actually called "The Sequel" is an obvious admittance that the movie was going to rip on/from the first movie, and part 2 does the ripping brilliantly.
I met Jerry many years ago and told him how much my father and I loved those two movies, he quickly corrected me "We didn't make the second one"
Airplane 2 is pure gold, I always liked it better than the first.
Grease 2 is so underrated (there I said it)
One of only 3 musicals I've ever liked (and Grease 2 isn't on that list)
It's much better than any of the Naked Gun sequels.
Liam Neeson is now in the remake of Naked Gun.
Really? I very very, very seldom say this, but Hollywood actually nailed that one. His deadpan idiot character from his cameo in Ted 2 was a perfect Leslie Nielsen.
Airplane 2 is hillarious too. Geez that guy did Grease 2 😮
While not a prequel, there was an other movie very similar to the Airplane movies: "The Big Bus" from 1976
Stockard Channing (aka "Rizzo"!)
I didn't know it did poorly at the box office, I love both movies
I enjoy Airplane 2 . It reiterates and varies on a lot of elements and jokes from the first, but that's true of a LOT of comedy movie sequels. One of my favorite bits is two characters are discussing how the shuttle is doomed, while two Japanese passengers overhear in the background. One does a tremendous spit-take after hearing the news. The other has no idea what's going on until the info is translated for him, then does a huge spit-take of his own.
Yeah, nowadays a straight up comedy sequel wouldn't likely get made. It would likely be some kind of horror spin off called "Space" or something that's only related by one character and a couple Easter eggs. It's interesting how times change
Shatner is gold and it's much better than most comedies today
I love how the people in the comments are talking about how much they love Airplane 2. I think that with a lot of old sequels to classic movies (Airplane 2, Jaws 2, Halloween 2, Rocky 2, Grease 2, etc.), the critics automatically get into bashing mode because the sequels are "not as good as the original." As if they still can't be good anyway. But when you read the comments in review videos for these sequels you'll find overwhelming praise for them. A lot of these critics just have sticks up their asses.
Many times, they are looking that them in hindsight. For instance, I was in middle school at the time that Halloween III came out, and being young, most of us only had a vague idea that Michael Myers was the main villain for the 1st two movies. So we loved Halloween III: Season of the Witch when it came out. Now it's some 'abomination' because it didn't follow the Myers mythos .. but it'd definitely be a cult classic if it was just called Season of the Witch.
@@deementia6796 I think Halloween III is now considered a cult classic. Enough time has passed that there is a new appreciation for it. For me it is an extremely flawed guilty pleasure.
I think the OG Rocky movie was dreadful, and I loved Grease 2 and hated the original, haha. Fight me.
@@jasondashney So you hate both the first Rocky movie and the first Grease movie but yet you love Grease 2. Hmmm. I will not fight you but unless you're gay you have peculiar taste.
@@mikehunt4986 Rocky might be the most overrated movie I've ever seen. Rocky says next to nothing the whole movie and there's not a likeable character. I do not understand the hype about that movie in any capacity and that's not from memory. I'm in middle age and I watched it a couple years ago and didn't really like anything about it. I had the same feeling with Grease. I just don't "get it". If Grease 2 was a random stand alone movie I think people would like it much more. It's like how nobody has ever truly loved a sequel since Empire Strikes Back. FYI, I"m straight as an arrow. I normally don't like musicals. I've only ever liked Grease 2, The Pirate Movie, and the South Park movie.
I never got around to seeing this one. I only ever saw the original
Definitely missing out on a good one!
Don't believe the hating hype. "Airplane II: The Sequel" is hilarious and fun to watch.
I think it's still a pretty funny movie.
I think the thing that even allowed Airplane 2 to do as well as it did was that most people didn't have a way to watch it at home, VCRs were crazy expensive, of course no streaming. Maybe there was a heavily edited version on TV, they probably could have just re-run the first one and made the same money at the box office.
I guess you had to be there when it came out, like I was. I remember when it hit cable, and was played often, and all of us in middle school LOVED it, almost as much as the first one. So many of this movie's lines were quoted back and forth between my friends and I. It definitely wasn't Naked Gun (hell, I loved Police Squad on TV and that only lasted 5 episodes) but it's still a good movie, even without ZAZ involved.
I think I laughed at it when I was 13, but I have never had the desire to rewatch it. But, to be fair, the scene where it looks like William Shatner is on a viewscreen, then he opens that door, is a solid visual gag.
I first saw this as a kid on HBO around the time that The Naked Gun was popular. My dad and I thought that "Ken Finkleman" was a joke name that ZAZ made up!
It may have been the same as Airplane 1 but I still loved it 😁
Not better than the original but pretty funny sequel
10:45. He was serious - and don’t call him Shirley.
Airplane II wasn't the best of the francise, but it was a close second.
I remember really liking Airplane 2, but then I was 9 when it came out and I don't think I've seen it since. Maybe not one for the top of my rewatch list :)
I mean hey, when I was a kid I didn't know AIrplane II was worse than the original. And when I needed a clip of people playing Jeopardy on a plane for my UA-cam video, Airplane II was there for me.
Hold on im coming down there video screen that we all think is just a video screen suddenly opens up like a door and William shatner just walks through it hahahahahaha 😅😅😅
Haven't seen it in years but I remember I enjoyed it when I was a kid.
I rewatched both those films recently.
Sure, the sequel isn't as good as the original but man alive both are still a bunch of fun.
I didn't get the reference to Aldo Ray @ 5.20 was there a significant reason that he was mentioned and/or that his role was subsequently cut?
Shatner lifted it for me, back in the day.
Not great, but not the worst. I did enjoy the way Shatner appeared in the film. The monitor/window door was a hilarious visual gag.
I actually thought that the fact they essentially remade the first movie WAS the main joke of the sequel. So many sequels do this or end up redoing major scenes in the sequel.
The De Moines institute?
You know it?
we're familiar with it.
Fun video. And stop calling me Shirley!
Airplane 2 reminds me that there are precious few movies in this genre that can even be considered competent. I count six, total: This, Airplane, Naked Gun 1 and 2, Top Secret!, and Scary Movie 3-- that's all that come to mind.
Not Another Teen Movie,
Hot Shots,
Idiocracy,
Just to add to your excellent list.
@@FirstDan2000 YES! Hot Shots Part Deux also.
@@Galgomite Arguably better than the first one!
I AM serious! And don’t call me Shirley! 😅
Was that Shooter McGavin with a pompadour?
I like "Airplane 2 the Sequel". It had lots of funny gags!!
I don't give a darn. I ADORE THIS MOVIE! Sure, Airplane can't be touched. I watch that all the time and it never gets old and I am always cackling at that even though I know it by heart and quote it. But I love Airplane 2. It is hilarious to me. Whatever floats your boat...or ship...
Shatner was outstanding in this movie. i loved it
Finkleman screwed the pooch but he is a genius and Newsroom (90s show) is amazing and worth checking out
"I need a little breather".
Saw the first Airplane twice in the theater originally. I think I saw part 2 on cable.
Where am I going to get a piece of metal?... Out here in space?... At this hour?
I think there was an interview Robert Hays did years ago where he mentioned while he was in the UK making the film Scandalous, he was sent a draft script of Airplane 3 and he turned it down after reading it as he felt it was out of place and didnt make sense so the project was canned by Paramount.
Much better than a lot of sequels.
Ahhh..back when they could still sell bombs at the airport
He is serious and don't call us Surely!!!
Obviously not as good as the first film, but still really funny. Shatner was hilarious.
"When have comedy sequels ever been successful?"
Austin Powers sequels are arguably better than the original.
Check it, bleed. Bro... was on! Didn't trip. But the folks was freakin', man. Hey, and the pilots were laid to the bone, Home. So Blood hammered out and jammed jet ship. Tightened that bad sucker inside the runaway like a mother. S..t.
Speaking jive lol.
Right on.
I don't care if this movie isn't well liked. Every moment of Shatner in this is gold.
Shatner is legit funny in it
You mean people don't like this movie.?? I loved it... Never knew about the dislike
I agree with Zucker. If ya liken a movie idea with a mine full of precious gemstones then well Airplane mined out the whole mine. They got every bit of humor they could with the first film. That’s why that movie is so overpacked with jokes and quotable lines.
So when it came to a sequel where could they go with it that wasn’t retreading old ground? Well they decided to spoof Sci-Fi movies. To me it’s the sci fi spoofing I like the most because it’s new, sadly it had to be saddled with the hollow corpse the Airplane connection with its rehashed jokes.
"He's the top Dog, the Head Cheese......NUMERO UNO HANCHO
I remember finding it funny at the time but I was also maybe 10 years old when I saw it as a video rental; the prime age to think it was great.
Generally, you can't top the original but Hollywood is always gonna try.
_Airplane: The Sequel_ wasn't great but I loved Bill Shatners part. Any time I sit through it I just fast forward to his scenes.
I liked it, it was ok, it's worth watching, just for Lloyd Bridges & William Shatner
I have no idea what happened to this movie, but for there had been problems. I guess that their leaving to do The Police Squad Series, ZAZ is absent from Airplane 2.
