WTF Happened to Beetlejuice?

- With Tim Burton’s long-awaited Beetlejuice 2 finally being confirmed yesterday, with a September 2024 release date set by Warner Bros, now’s the perfect time to revisit the 1988 classic that made Burton and his star, Michael Keaton, household names. The film is about an obnoxious “bio-exorcist” named Beetlejuice, hired by a ghostly couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) to rid their home of its new human owners, it was such a phenomenon that the studio trusted the director to take on Batman as his next movie. They even let him cast Beetlejuice himself, Michael Keaton, as the Caped Crusader, in what was seen as the most against-type casting of its era.
In this episode of WTF Happened to Beetlejuice, we track the film’s journey to the small screen and how this bizarre movie became a comedy classic that’s stood the test of time. We examine how Keaton and his co-stars Winona Ryder and Geena Davis became megastars following the film’s success, with Alec Baldwin and Catherine O’Hara also getting notable early roles. We also take a look at how Danny Elfman’s score added to the film’s vibe, with it notably making the late Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) and Jump in the Line (Shake Señora) massive hits decades after they original came out.
This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written and narrated by Mathew Plale and edited by Ric Solomon. Are you excited for Beetlejuice 2? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Keaton has only seventeen minutes of screentime in this movie, yet he absolutely makes the most of them.
He’s a legend
@@chasehedges6775 He's Batman
I can't see him without seeing Beatlejuice with little mannerisms that he makes, even still to this day and everything else he's done.
He’s a scene stealer, for sure
I didn’t realize it was that low! And I’ve seen the movie at least 100 times…..That’s like the Hannibal Lecter screen time on “Silence of the Lambs”. It’s like around 10- 15 minutes…I think? Both of those facts blow my mind.
This is a childhood favorite of mine. The undead makeup effects, the stop-motion animation, and the characters were great.
love the practical effects, they always give films of its era charm
Great movie 😊
This is definitely my type of movie: something that doesn't really make sense, but is just so much fun
Same here, man. Definitely one of the best
Exactly, Hollywood would never take a chance on a movie like this today sadly
I love the theme of Found Family in this movie. Adam and Barbara weren't able to have biological children, but they bond with Lydia, and she perceives them as surrogate parents.
Poor Lydia Deetz. Trapped in the house with that creepy creature..... and Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice is a legendary example of how to create a memorable character.
Still a Tim Burton classic and one of his absolute best
I was kind of hoping that for the live action Disney remakes they would have hired Burton and key & Peele to keep it colorful
Wrong, dumbass, because Tim Burton didn't write it, he only directed it, so it isn't his, idiot.
I remember seeing this when I was a kid. What a fantastic flick to watch and still holds up to this day.
It does, it would still be considered incredibly original even if it came out today, unfortunately, in today’s climate, I don’t think that type of movie would get Greenlit because it’s not a comic book, movie, or a young adult novel series, or anything like that, I think if it came out today the Hollywood execs would think it was too risky and weird, that’s why I loved the 80s and early 90s
this film is still in my top 5 of all time. absolute classic film.
I watched this movie so much as a kid throughout the late 80s and early 90s that it is burned into my brain…my mom actually taped it when it was on TV onto VHS and she did it like a pro, stopped taping when the commercials started, continued taping when the commercials ended…, I had the old school copy of Beetlejuice on that black spine tape….edited by my mother, thank you mom I love you…. I’m not gonna lie some of the images in the movie messed with me when I was a kid, like when the old lady is smoking and it’s coming out a hole in her throat, and I smoke now! You think after watching that scene over and over as a kid I would never smoke
Admittedly the first time I watched this I felt unwelcome so I didn't enjoy it mainly cause I was having a lousy time. But when I saw it on Disney a few years I loved it. And then exactly what you I've seen it so many times I can recall every scene. And yeah I'm with you on some of those scenes. You would think how I was with death I would've hated It the first time for that.
Same story here
the part that always scared me was the first appearance of the sandworms when the movie tone is a dark blue shade
and of course when Barbara rips her face off in the closet to scare off the new residents
@@ItsaKindOfMagic86 yess, both of those got me as well
I don’t blame you for smoking I for a short period smoked cigarettes bout 10 years ago and boy did they give me a wonderful buzz. Felt very relaxed and energetic at the same time.
It's so funny that Winona Ryder was hoping being in a movie would help her be popular in high school. Knowing 2 years later she would be dating Johnny Depp and be followed by paparazzi 24/7.
Got to meet Glenn Shaddux before his passing. His role in this movie cannot be over valued.
Michael Keaton playing Batman in the Flash and playing Beetlejuice again next year so cool
Beetlejuice was so brilliant but I just can't imagine a sequel without Otho. I was lucky enough to meet Glenn Shadix. Super nice guy, so unlike his screen persona.
Hope the film at least makes mention of what happened to him.
Still 1 of the best Tim Burton movies ever
Such a classic
I still like Edward Scissorhands better but its still up there.
Hey, we got to give love to “Peewee’s Big Adventure”, also……That movie was dope.
@@barbiquearea that and sleepy hollow are my favorite by tim Burton, especially around Halloween . All his movies share a certain style. The dark and foggy atmosphere
It isn't a Tim Burton movie, dumbass. He only directed, he didn't write it.
People need to stop giving directors credit for everything.
I love it when he's goes to say Beetlejuice and his lower jaw falls off.
When I first saw a preview to this film back in the 80’s I was like, “Nope.” Then my mom had rented it from our local video store because the owner said it was great. We ended up watching it that night and after that I completely changed my mind. It wasn’t what I had expected and it became one of my favorite movies. So every time I hear “Day-O” I think of Beetlejuice. 😁
As a kid, I didnt know this movie existed, but I loved the cartoon. When I found out "They made a movie of the cartoon!" I had to rent it. It was nothing like the cartoon, but I loved it. Same goes for Ghostbusters.
Well, for both Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters, the cartoons were created after the movies.
One fall day in 1988, i skipped school and went back home, stole some pot from my dad and watched the movies we had recently rented: Beetlejuice and Evil Dead 2. It was an incredible day.
I remember when I was a kid we heard this movie was filming here in VT, and I couldn't wait to see it...and it did not disappoint.
i loved how the fall from the bridge was like a 5 foot drop haha
Most likely it wasn’t the fall but the drowning hahahaha stupid dog though killed them.
I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier, every time I see it.
Ortega would actually be a really good option for Lydia's daughter. I could totally see her either emulating her mother, or actually being all goth whilst Lydia wasn't anymore, and being surprised to find out how similar she was to her mother at that age.
Not sure how I feel about a sequel though, especially after all this time. I find it more likely they'd just do a reboot, even if I'm not keen on that idea either.
They are making it a sequel it even has a released date and Burton is directing filming is taking place in London.
I d so much love Winona to show up as a gothic woman in her 50s....
man, I m sure she still rocks the clock no end still today.
and yeah, I d buy a ticket if just only to see her...
that 88 crush never died, I still find her irresistible!
good show.
4:23 Justine Bateman. Ouch. You couldn't find a more flattering picture? hahahaaa
Comedy Horror was quite popular in the late 80s and early 90s.
Other films in this subgenre during this time period are Death Becomes Her, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scrooged, High Spirits, Killer Klowns, Gremlins, and Night of the Creeps.
good memories
How could you forget Evil Dead 2?
This movie was one of the first I bought on DVD, when my family was making the transition from VHS to DVDs. This movie was my childhood
That was a great movie. With so many originals already attached to it, I'm really looking forward to Beetlejuice 2.
To see Michael Keaton in this role again would be awesome
So many famous faces like Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, and Principal Ed Rooney (I can’t remember the actor’s name)
That would be Jeffrey Jones.
Back when Alec Baldwin didn't kill anyone, Winona Ryder didn't get into trouble for shoplifting and Geena Davis didn't torpedo her career with a career ending flop that was Cutthroat Island.
@@barbiquearea You missed jeffrey jones being a sex offender... starting to think this movie may have been cursed.
I remember thinking as a kid, and reminded of it every time the scene came on (as I’ve seen this movie at least 20 times), why were the football players wearing their gear and full uniform on the bus?
Genna Davis is underrated. If only she didn't sign on for Cutthroat Island. Her career would be a lot better today.
I was just talking about that movie yesterday it sucks that it killed her career ... she was such a good actress this movie, the fly, the long kiss good night and earth girls are easy was a classic
Nothing. He went to Hawaii.
Saw this in the theater. Had no idea I would love it!
11:47 I remember this scene in the theater the first time. SUPER CREEPY!! It's by far Danny's best performance. It not only still holds up visually, he is able to show so much emotion even with all that makeup on. It's just incredible. No one else could have done it. Not that good. This is a classic line. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
Beatlejuice will always sound like Michael Keatons version in my head. 😂
Beetlejuice. Beatles are a band.
I heard that Michael Keaton went back to his start and made most of his lines on the fly in the original relying on his standup comedy ability. Many don't remember that is where he started. He wrote and did his own standup comedy before his career took off as an actor. So for him to do that most of the time in this movie is gold. I hope there is some of that in the sequel and that he is still good at it. Eighties was a great time for comedy. Loved this movie, Ghostbusters, and Ghostbusters II - all were great scripts and actors. They came back to VT in the summer of 2023 to film the scenes on site again - and finished filming after the strike ended in the studio as the sets in VT were taken down right before they finished filming there.
I loved this movie so much… Michael Keaton only being in it in small passes it was enough for me. Seems like he was in the whole movie to me lol
Tim's early stuff is awesome. Original frankenweenie, batman returns and nightmare before xmas. I highly recommend watching pee wee's big adventure with commentary.
It began production 2 days before i was born!!!! So close. It would of been awesome if it was on my birthday cause i was born on friday 13th, live on elm st, and have a guy named freddy living across the street. Adding this would be great
I swear, the properties that deserve attention doesn't get it, but heaven forbid we go a year or two without a new Texas Chainsaw or Marvel movie
13:43 to 13:54 - And to think, just a day before this video premiered on UA-cam, a sequel to BEETLEJUICE was officially confirmed and scheduled for release on September 6, 2024.
An all time classic 🎥👌👌👌
I don't care how old Keaton is he could do it again without losing any of the original energy.
Most don't realize there were 2 versions of this on VHS. One with the "Nice fkn model *honk honk*" bit cut out and one still in.
I feel like the original 2 movie idea (Beetlejuice in Hawaii) could have been a cartoon movie or an episode for the cartoon.
They could’ve change the plot of it to make easier and fun too.
This, PeeWee, and Batman are 3 childhood classics that I never stopped watching throughout my life. The rest of Burtons filmography is hit or miss (even during the 90s, as far as I'm concerned) but these 3 are my favorites of all time. Anytime the theaters play them, you can bet my ass is in a theater seat.
Can't forget Edward scissor hands during the 90s by tim Burton. Loved his style of movies. Like sleepy hollow with Johnny Depp by tim Burton.
have you seen Corpse Bride? stop motion film.
Sequel confirmed with a date...cannot wait...awesome vid here!
And now we have a trailer...
Love this movie it was my childhood the cast was fantastic part 2 comes out next year I hope they do it justice
@Matthew Daley I would none of them but it's gonna be great seeing them reprise their roles especially Michael Keaton
And we got a teaser for the sequel!
One of my favorite movies.
Apparently Jenna would play Winona daughter in the film
I just went to see the musical last week. It was surprisingly good! A little on-the-nose with its politics but it was still really funny!
Beetlejuice looks like a refugee from the Rocky Horror Picture Show! 🤔
Beetlejuice 2 just started filming last week! So excited.
No it didn't, fucking dumbass.
Beetlejuice goes Hawaiian!!!
I loved this as a kid and still do. So excited for the sequel. Also here's a video idea. WtF happened to Ally McBell?
And that is why I won't do two shows in one night, nope won't do it.
They couldn’t decide if they wanted it to be Beetlejuice Beetle Juice or Betelgeuse so they just opted to call it all three lol
Movie is coming out this summer. Bettlejuice, Bettlejuice.
As long as the new movie doesn't end with Lidya and Beetlejuice "falling in love", Im excited for the sequel.
Aww lol come on its a unlikely lovers plot.
Sequel is already filming, so he's still got it!
Y'all need to hurry up, in speed up the process cuz I can't wait to see part 2😮
The day o and last song are great
whoop whoop yes confirmed Beetlejuice 2 trailer has just come out!
Beetlejuice definitely deserves a sequel although I never understood about the deetzes vacationing to hawaii theme but could work!! Michael keaton was born to play beetlejuice and he absolutely makes the movie!! Never realized he is only in the movie for about seventeen minutes amazing!! Love when he starts explaining his qualifIcations to Geena davis and Alec baldwin beginning in his real voice and then becoming demonic ending with I've seen the exorcist over 100 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it lol!!! May beetlejuice always remain an icon on both sides of the eternal realm.
Can you even imagine Kinison as Beetlejuice????
Love this, I was Lydia in her wedding dress for Halloween last year!
Beetlejuice in Hawaii ? Again we are literally “jumping the shark” again
From what I hear about Beetlejuice II; I heard or rather read somewhere online that it is going to go darker than the first film.
I haven't been so excited to see a movie in such a long time and I'm thrilled this is finally happening!! I've seen the first one so many times when I was a kid. I love Beetlejuice!!! I can't wait!!!
Coming soon:
BEETLEJUICE 2.
It's been confirmed for a Fall 2024 release date.
Ah…well I attended Juilliard, I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively, I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the EXORCIST ABOUT A HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SEVEN TIMES, AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY... NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK?!?!?! You think I'm qualified?!?!?!
I also loved the cartoon.
The Saturday morning cartoon was super underrated
I’ve loved it forever but never thought it was horror.
I loved it when it premiered and I still love it today!
Beetlejuice 2 is set to release in September of 2024, already started production . Can't wait
Yea apparently William Dafoe is in it as well.
No it didn't, dumbass.
Nice F/N video! Tug Tug.
Hoping to see a sequel’s teaser during the superbowl next week!
A classic. The sequel began filming today!
The development hell for this sequel makes Ghostbusters 3 look mild
Love Beetlejuice! ❤😊❤😊❤
Quite excited for the new one and hopefully they knock it out of the park
@@matthewdaley746 yeah that's my default take on things like this but I don't know why I have a feeling this could be great.
it is coming in September . it's show time baby
Looking forward to the sequel.
I thought beetlejuice sequels should be called
beetlejuice, beetlejuice
beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice etc.
yeah uh you kinda uh err
Here's my childhood in cinematic form courtesy of Home Box Office🔥 edit: Prince Valium..😂
I don't know where they got their ideas from, but I knew the animated series on Cartoon Network and I loved the movie!
This and The Burbs just the best ever 👍
Nice to seeing one of my favorite horror comedies, let’s hope the sequel is good.
You did Justine dirty when talking about Winona's part
@@matthewdaley746 idk what you're talking about
@@matthewdaley746 what does that have to do with my comment? I'm talking about how he used a picture of her looking old and beat up, while every other girl has a flattering, young photo of them
Beetlejuice 2 is now filming and pics of Winona Ryder as Lydia on set. :) so, next september it'll be released.
Can you guys do an episode on Taxi Driver??
surprised you didn't point out that both the songs (Day-O and Jump in the Line) that almost weren't in the movie were BOTH by Harry Belafonte, not just Day-O
A totally passable game for NES? They must not even have played that game clearly. Just the little LJN rainbow sends shivers down my spine...
Still one of my favorite Tim Burton films
I need to re watch beetle juice again haven’t watched it in like forever
I just read that Beetlejuice 2 is coming out next year. As much as I love the first, I'm not sure a sequel will be good. Seems like Hollywood is totally out of ideas and just remakes movies, or does unnecessary sequels. I hope it's good, though.
The sequel is Burtons idea he's fought to get it made since 1990.
That Secret Galaxy channel has a damn good video on Beetlejuice. Every third time he says BEETLEJUICE he turns into a great looking Beetlejuice.
Two Harry Bellefonte songs? Ummm. Pay attention close to the start when Baldwin's character asks to run to the store. He has a radio playing and it's a THIRD Harry Bellefonte song. There's three. All from the same album
