In 1998 the band Embodyment released an album called Embrace the Eternal that expertly combined Death Metal and early Metalcore, and then they suddenly changed their entire sound seemingly overnight. This video explores the history of this band and tries to uncover exactly what it was that brought on such a massive change for the band after only one album.

What is your favorite Embodyment album?
The emu one
@@Hxcliberty the one with emu on the cover.
I like songs off of Narrow Scope, but man, Embrace the Eternal just perfectly scratches that heavy metal itch. It’s just an unrelenting album, even compared to modern death met/hardcore
@@kylestrattan6927 it's definitely oppressive.
I legit can't choose between the first three...
I love Embodyment! Sean was such a welcome change to the band. Narrow Scope is amazing and I remember back in the day, I picked up the Within album because of the artwork and the lyrics - still one of my favorites. What's funny, is that I remember reading an interview with Sean after he joined Embodyment and he called Within a "high school noisy band" almost to the point where he wanted to forget that band even though it was impactful to me during my teenage years.
I still enjoy their entire discography but find myself appreciating TNSOT the most.
I maintain that Narrow Scope is a perfect record. It captures that era of music more perfectly than anything else at the time. Had the band changed their name, it would be more beloved and mired in the weight of expectation that crushed it for a lot of people.
This was amazing!! I saw them live at the Revelation room in 2003 or 2004.. Watching them live was life changing energy! 🔥🔥🔥I can’t believe I rushed to grow up…
Yeah why did we want to be adults again? So far I'm not a fan of it lol.
So glad to see Embodyment getting more love! Being a Christian from Texas they’ve always had a special place in my heart. It’s funny though, my favorite album by them is Hold Your Breath, but my favorite song by them is Halo of Winter.
It's because Halo of Winter is a full albums worth of greatness in one song!
1st time to find your channel.
Love that you mention Within! I grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and that CD was 1 of my favorites. My Spirits Cry is an incredible song lyrically.
I saw Embodyment at least a dozen times (all with Sean).
Thank you very much for talking about them!
Absolutely! I feel like they don't get discussed enough
Alright alright, you convinced me. I’ll give Hold your Breath another shot
You should.
And boy am I glad they changed. Them being deathcore pioneers on 'Embrace the Eternal' is cool and all, but 'Narrow Scope' and 'Hold Your Breath' are some of the best alt-rock albums of all time! Criminally underrated
They smoothed out really well didn't they? Ha ha
Yessir, songs are written & we tracked drums in Feb '24. Things are moving along.
PS - great video.
I can't wait!
My favourite band of all time hands down, and the best part about them is that EVERY era of sound is fucking awesome. Fav album is def TNSOT. Absolutely perfect alt rock/metal album
I fell in love with Embodyment at Narrow Scope Of Things, and loved Hold Your Breath. I might be one of a handful of people who feel this way, but i hold Songs For the Living up with those other two, and was so excited with the studio leaks that came out from their next album before they called it quits.
Sidenote: In case you didn't know, those post-Songs For The Living tracks exist officially on Streaming now as Forgotten EP.
The demo tape is very early Carcass influenced
Post Hold Your Breath was sad how everything got buried. Saw them on the Song For the Living tour cycle with Narcissus. It wasn't a bad set, felt bad that no one was there to support them.
Yeah it's hard when you have a split fanbase
Embrace the Eternal! We called it
spazcore back then
Thank you for talking about Embodyment! I like their entire discography, from Embrace The Eternal - Songs for the Living. I got to see them live in both of those incarnations and loved both. Thanks for making this video and reminding me of why I like Embodyment!
They may have changed styles but they never lost their intensity.
thank you for doing this. I've been listening to Embodyment since the 90s and I didn't know most of this!
Thanks you so much for watching it! Im glad you enjoyed it.
@@dft9000 I'm checking out some of your other vids now!
@@uzkostthats awesome! Let me know what you think of them. This channel is also a podcast and there's a bunch more episodes that are available only on like Spotify and Apple.
@@dft9000 oh cool! watching the bless the martyr one right now. Definitely going to check out anything you have Zao related.
They've been one of my favorite bands since 1998 and I'm from their hometown. So I share your obsession, lol
@@uzkostThey are absolutely the best.
damn, 17:04 took me WAY back. still a great album. thanks for bringing this band back to my attention
Absolutely! One of my most nostalgic records for sure.
Cool video. For some classification clarification, as an old-head; in the late 90s/early 2000s, any hardcore/metal with singing (for the most part) was called emocore. The first emo and emo-hardcore bands had vocalists who couldn't sing completely in key. Metalcore had no singing vocals at all, metalcore was considered a mix of hardcore and metal. The definitions of these classifications changed in later years, but what I'm explaining is 100% accurate, as someone who was in that scene at the time and played with these bands. That may clear up some confusion.
I appreciate the differentiation. I cut my teeth on Nu Metal between 2000-2002 before getting into heavier music, so I heard alot of similarities to those styles at the time. However it does seem like every couple years or so the terminology is rearranged.
@@dft9000 Yeah, emo began to be almost a derogatory term after a while, that may have been the beginning of it lol.
The Narrow Scope of Things is one of my ALL TIME favorite albums, it doesn't get near enough love!
Honestly, so much of their discography gets hate, but they were good from start to finish.
I agree. Obviously I have preferences, but I dont find any of their albums to be unenjoyable. I will admit that Songs For the Living I have to be in a specific mood for.
Good video. Early embodyment is a blueprint of “evil sounding metalcore” imo but the later era stuff is absolutely incredible alternative music. Under appreciated.
Thanks! Yeah I tried my best to highlight just how good the post Embrace era actually was
As a fan of this band from the early days, I always insist that Embodyment’s peak sound was in the song/single ‘Halo of Winter’. Upon speaking with Kris after its release, he stated that the band was going that direction on the new album or as he put it a more “Coalesce” sound. This never happened, as he left shortly after that and the band went a different direction. Oh, what could have been…
Sure, there was The Famine, but, it’s not the same.
Yeah they made a conscious choice not to make The Famine Embodyment 2.0
Great video as always. Have always enjoyed Embodyment even with all the changes in their sound.
Same! Well I didn't like Songs For the Living so much but it don't like actively dislike it either ha ha.
As far as the vocals on the 93-96 demos, the vocals were done by Andy Godwin and Kevin Donnini.
Glad you talked about Halo of Winter
The missing link!
These dudes were playing brutal death metal for almost a decade before Embrace the Eternal. Pretty sure they began these changes prior to Embrace The Eternal. Why most of the bands fans had only really discovered them with EtE...... "deathcore" was probably getting pretty old for them.
Plus.... the desire to depart from the literal praise/worship music of EtE in favor a more secular concept.
This was awesome! Thanks for doing this. Glad someone shared this with me.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
If you enjoyed Narrow Scope, please do yourself a favor and check out the band Travail. They’re from the same area and have a really similar hardcore/nu metal sound.
Love Travail. They had a huge Korn influence but seemed much heavier overall. I interviewed the whole band on my old podcast several years ago
I always thought embrace the eternal was the first death Core album.
Had to be the first Christian Death Core right?
Love it, never been huge on Embodyment but they were always a very interesting band. Very well put together history.
Thank you!
hell yeah thanks for doing my recommendation
You know at first I was like "Im just gonna do the first two" then I was like "nah screw, it lets talk about em all"
I saw embodyment 5 times in a week in the Northeast towards the end of their touring. I saw them play at cornerstone and at a indoor batting cage in Connecticut. These people are my friends.
I sadly never got to see them live during any era, I got into them too late. I was lucky enough to see The Famine though, and hopefully in the future I can see Hope Defered. Definitely bummed that Sean doesnt do music anymore.
I heard his wife was sick. Not heard anything in the last few years. I hope he's doing well.
Take 2 of Embrace the Eternal= The Famine's The Raven and the Reaping. They got Chris back on vocals.
The vocals on The Raven and the Reaping were my favorite of his vocals.
My band opened for them in 2002 in Greentown, Indiana. Cool guys. Loved their music. Underrated for sure
We played with them in Texas that year!
I'm with Buddy, I heard that album when I was 16 and was like, whaaaaat. Nope, what happened?! Lol
Pissed i missed my chance to see The Famine.
Also ALL HAIL Invisible Music the man who filmed all that concert footage that I use in these videos. You are a legend for recording so many shows over the years and sharing them with the world.
@@dft9000 thank you kindly!
Have you by chance heard/heard of Embodiment from Australia?
I've heard OF them but never listened. I should change that.
any info on where i can find that Within album?
