The Early History of Living Sacrifice (DFT'S Dungeon)
#christianmetal #thrashmetal #livingsacrifice
Living Sacrifice has had one of the largest impacts on Christian Metal out of any band that I can think of. Originating in the late 1980's and early 1990's Living Sacrifice released a trilogy of albums that explored the extremity of Thrash and Death Metal and they would go on to influence countless bands as well as set the band up to transition into one of the most popular metalcore bands in the Christian music scene as well as metal at large. If the first album you've ever heard from the band is Reborn. You might be curious to hear what the band was up to before that.

Okay, you’ve convinced me to give this album another listen. Originally, I felt it was a little too progressive, a la Neurosis and Isis, which isn’t bad at all, it just didn’t resonate with me as much as their previous albums. I’m gonna give it a more thorough listen next time.

That is, until ... the CD player stopped working! Instead of investing in a new or fixing the existing CD player, I choose to re-invest in some of those aforementioned cassettes of my youth, specifically, Believer (pictured in this video), The Crucified, Deliverance (also pictured), King's X (who I just saw live last month, Holy Soldier, Mortal and a new one by Impending Doom. I was introduced to extreme heavy music through the “christian” scene. Prior to purging my 90s record collection in a fit of imposed satanic panic, I’d never regularly listened to anything heavier than rage against the machine. Some of my favorite concert experiences to date were in that christian coffee house scene. I endured an insane amount of scrutiny from adults and youth pastors about my choices in “christian” music. The irony is they were right in a way. That music did contribute to me moving away from church. Not because of anything about the music; but because of the way authority figures were responding to it. It helped me realize organized religion was a trap. People using guilt and authority structures to gain control of, and submission from others. I’ve only realized in retrospect how unique and groundbreaking some of those bands were. Even though I cringe at the lyrics occasionally, I still have deep love and appreciation for many bands in that scene.

    • @dft9000

I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. Luckily got out by the time I was 12. And was from that day forward an atheist/Spinozas God type guy. Not a fan whatsoever of religious institutions. But yet loved christian metal. It was what got me into metal at the beginning. ABR, Zao, Norma, Haste the Day. And its funny. Most of my friends who were like me, non religious, also felt the same way. Its still to this day. Almost all the Christian bands are looked back on fondly and respected by very non religious people. Its really interesting. Religious people tend to make it seem like they are crapped on and not welcome when thats further from the truth. Yes, some of the bands got crap from other bands. But as a whole, very welcomed in the secular world.

The first band was pretty chill, then figure four started playing, they struck the first chord of their set and I was in the front and i immediately became terrified, I realized i had to fight everyone to keep my place, so i fought through the last three bands, pushing and shoving and being swept in the wave of the crowd side to side.
