- These actors couldn't escape from their villainous roles

There are two different types of iconic villains. There’s the ones you want to believe in, or that at least redeem themselves. However, then there’s the no-good, despicable type that leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth. It takes a special kind of actor to pull that off.
Consider this video a send up to all those performers we hate because they make it their job to be hated. Yes, we’re talking about the Joffrey Baratheons of the world. Roles so iconically nasty the actor will never escape the idea of them being evil.
You’re in for quite the treat in this video. ScreenRant has gone over all those iconic rogues and picked out the ten greatest performances we still hate today. Trust us, you’re going to leave this list with a sour taste in your mouth. In fact, you’re gonna want to go back and watch all these villains meet their demise. We guarantee it.
We’ve got classics like Hannibal Lecter, Johnny Lawerence, and Nurse Ratched. Mixing in with them are some of the new kids on the block like General Hux, Aunt Lydia, and Perry Wright. Then, of course, comes the instant classics. The villains that come to your mind instantly when you think of the word wicked. The villains in a class of their own like Gus Fring, Bellatrix Lestrange, Jim Moriarty, and Joffrey Baratheon. You know, the ones you wanted to be defeated the minute you saw them.
We’ve got all that and more on the latest from ScreenRant!

People hate Dolores Umbridge way more than Bellatrix Lestrange
Agree
Exactly
True
true but whoo hates bellatrix, i loved her
Indeed
Who hates Anthony Hopkins? He was an amazing villain and not hateable at all!!!!!
See my thread above... 😄
Even if someone acts really good I would not hate them in real life😕
Tom Hiddleston auditioned for Thor but played Loki which was very Good but you can't hate him and the same can be said about Mark Strong's Villains categories and Heath Ledger's Joker.
Mark Strong in both Kingsman movies😍🥺
Umbridge should be there instead of Bellatrix!!!!
Fr, umbridge was more hated than Voldemort 😂
Erik .D yup
Mariela Oquendo Rodriguez yup
Yep.
YEA SHE SHOULD
Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus in Gladiator should have been mentioned
Yeah, Phoenix in _Gladiator_ (2000) was definitely hated. Likewise, Jason Isaacs in _The Patriot_ (2000) gave an equally, if not nastier role. Will Patton did a similar job in _The Postman_ (1997). So many actors to despise for being too good. 😀
absolutely. i liked him though and wanted him to win lol
every time i saw him in something else, I'd be thinking there's the emperor from "Gladiator".
@@hottakestuesdays7450 so true.
The actor who played Joffrey played him so well and made him so unlikeable! Absolutely infuriating
I've never seen game of thrones, but every time I see a clip its just like "Oh wow he's a really good actor"
He shouldn’t be in this video cause he’s really likable in real life
Kathy Bates from Misery. Everytime i see her i think of that role.
Yup, this is definitely one of the ones that should have been on the list. Also Glen Close from _Fatal Attraction._ Both of these women still make me uncomfortable all these years later. 😕
How could anyone dislike Giancarlo Esposito in real life? He is such a lovable person
I even found as a character, he wasn't anymore bad than WW and I certainly didn't hate him, he was the villain that I loved to watch on the contrary
Giancarlo always plays a “bad guy”, and he does it so well!
@@jacobhall6741 Yeah, Honest the role of Fring had the opposite effect as listed. As Fring he earned my undying respect, Fring was a villain but has something WW didn't, restraint. He undoubtedly would do just about anything necessary for his goals. But that was the line, he would act with necessity and took pride in his work. He was a proud businessman in both his Restaurant and Meth. He took care to ensure both were their finest.
@@jacobhall6741 Exactly!
@@ClownLush I think most people just see him as an amazing actor though and not as the characters he plays
“Gus” Giancarlo Esposito isn’t hated, he’s FEARED.
Where is the HOMELANDER
Why did you not include him
His evil hasnt peaked yet :) The Boys is only 2 seasons and the 3rd is already greenlit, so he has a way to go
Everyone loves homelander
I kind of like him
Yeah he's evil but we like him for it
Leo Nardo I definitely hate Homelander. He’s a psychopathic Superman. He’s fake, vain, chaotic, and petulant with all the power. He casually does horrible things that are unnecessary just cause he can. Just started season 2 and just saw what he did to the Daredevil analog. OMG! Just why?
The actor is doing a stupendous job. I would never feel comfortable around him. He’s friendly and calm right before he abuses you and you can’t do anything about it. He makes you feel helpless.
I actually liked Hannibal. He was pretty cool for a psychopath.
Task failed successfully
Who else went straight to the comments
Me
Jeff meee
Always
I did , Jeff👍😀
Yes
The actor who played Joffrey is absolutely perfect. It’s pretty shocking he hasn’t been involved in anything new since he did an amazing job at playing a character we all hate with passion.
He retired to focus on other interests.
He could have such a great future as playing an evil rich character. Maybe he'll come back once in a while to star in a Wall street movie.
@@dougmiller3398 Yeah. I heard after his role ended, he went to pursue an education and now is part of a theater company back in Ireland. I think I heard something that he said that he's hated the role as it's not a good depiction of him as a person for his sisters.
@@raybod1775 I would love to see him in a gritty Indie film like a Zollman movie i.e. Bone Tomahawk or Brawl in cell block 99. Maybe even some A24 produced pictures just to see his range as an actor to avoid the dreaded "type casting". One can only wish.
I didn't find him a good actor at all. All the credit for the unlikability of joffrey rests squarely on GRR Martin's shoulder.
And the casting department, who managed to cast someone with a very punchable face.
Killmonger has a redemption arch????? What movie did y’all watch screen rant?
Tobias Menzies on outlander aka (Black Jack Randall) played the best villain I’ve ever seen, his acting was soooooooooo good
Im surprised monique from precious didn't make it.
When you’re so early most of the comments are bots.
U mean U?
Umbridge should also be on this list!
Rest all in the video are truly hated
you hate Andrew Scott?
@@romina2185 I would say, yes
@@arbazahmed7048 HOW?????
@@romina2185 I don't hate the actor
But moriarty.
I know many won't hate him very much, but I just hated him while watching. Now that's my opinion, yours will of course be different.
@@arbazahmed7048 ok
Ppl hated moriarty? He was actually my fav
Same here...better than sherlock
Same, it marked the beginning of my obsession with Andrew Scott lol. One of my favourite villains ever!
Hopkins is revered for Hannibal Lecter. He’ll be getting slow claps that end in roaring applause for the rest of his life for that performance.
It’s 5:16AM and i should be asleep but you keep me up! Love all the content! Love the movies you talk about!
Where's Griff from Back to the Future, Jesus i hate that guy
Then make like a tree, and get outta here!
In the '80's, Kiefer Sutherland was so good at playing antisocial thugs that he became quite despicable. He redeemed himself well with his later roles, though.
Runs in the family
The actress who played Dolores Umbridge (internal shudder) was great at being evil.
Imelda Staunton even nearly threw up when she played Umbrige
I love Jonny in cobra Kai and tons of people loved his redemption ark Kresse is the real villain and you clearly didn’t watch cobra Kai
Yeah whoever wrote this script never watched Cobra Kai. Johnny is the man.
Amen
tbh I hated Tuco more than Gus, Gus was fascinating even.
Tuco was super unstable. I hated Todd the most.
I hated Marie she didn't know how to mind her business
The only actor that should be in the list in all 10 spots is Doug Hutchison, Percy in the green mile! He will always be Percy!!
He should’ve made the list.
A more recent entry would be Robert Pattinson in The Devil All The Time.
I was literally cheering during the confrontation scene.
That movie was craaazy!!
The actress in Misery triggered me for years in other movies she worked on!!!
Kathy Bates is treasure.
If an actor makes you hate them as a villian thats great acting i dont konw why people dont get it.Hate the character not the actor
I love Jack Gleeson's performance in GOT. Though I hated the character, I loved to hate him and I recognized that the acting performance was so fantastic that I was a bit sad when Joffrey died.
Screen Rant is one of them except minus the good at acting
Then why are you watching it?
Guydudeface Guydudeface ?
Correction on Belletrix, Voldermort made her crazy. She torture people in order to please or proof her loyalty to him.
SARISS80 yup
Jack Gleeson nailed his role as Joffrey hard enough to retroactively become the face of the character in the books. That's a rare accomplishment.
Michael Emerson as Ben Linus from Lost should definitely be on this list. Still can’t trust anything that “Other” says.
He wasn't much better in _Person of Interest_ either. He's pretty good at playing unlikable characters. 👍
- true.
So weird. I just watched One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest for the first time yesterday morning. I'm 40 years old and I wanted to cross this one off my bucket list. One day later and you made this list. Gives me the chills.
You forgot:
1. Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus in Gladiator
2. Ralph Fiennes as Amon Goeth in Shindler’s List
3. Gary Oldman as Norman Stansfield in Léon: The Professional
It’s the biggest compliment an actor can get! Homelander from The Boys is in danger of it now. Too good at being bad!
I wish Ryan George would do a pitch meeting for The Boys and will be commenting this on every SR video I watch lol
the best kind of actors xD
yo whats up bro
@@turtlegamer4179 not much mate, yourself?
@@turtlegamer4179 just having a couple of beers with the boys by the lake, wanna join us?
I'm surprised Dolores Umbridge didn't get a mention!
Louise Fletcher is such an incredible actress, as she hasn't just played one iconic evil character but two. As she also played the vile Kai Winn in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!!!
Nice one!
Killmonger didn't get a redemption arc! He died!
I love Helena . From interviews she actually seems like a nice person 😍 same goes for the guy who played Bryce in 13 reasons why who actually got hate for playing a fictional character.
Yeah def that other lady umbridge was worse than Helena. I forgot about Bryce damn and also probably Nathan (I think that’s the characters name) from Euphoria. I hated Ramsey more than Joffrey in GoT and I also didn’t really mind General Hux in the newer Star Wars movies, it was almost adorable to see him trying to be all powerful and stuff lol I hated that older guy way more but I can’t remember his name. This list was definitely a bit lacking lol
This is what happens when you have one entry for a list and have to scramble to find more last minute
The fact Jeffery Dean Morgan as Negan from The Walking Dead wasn't on this list is a sin
I wonder if his prior roles in _Supernatural_ and _Grey's Anatomy_ made it hard for people to see him as evil and hate him. 🤔 I think it's most effective for people to hate an actor if they aren't too familiar with them.
True
Luckily I've never seen GoT so I don't hate Jack Gleeson.
@ImDesire I'm 16 and my parents won't let me watch it.
@ImDesire i really enjoyed season 1-4, i forced myself watching season 5, and i can't finish season 6.
Now, i reconsidering bout should i finish the whole series
lol a lot of guys who watched it don't hate Jack Gleeson, these people don't distinguish character from an actor
@@rizkyraynasesa8640 watch season 6 till the end cause last 2 episodes are one of the best in series and then you can continue or imagine your own ending to this story
@@EntrEsprit thanks bro, i think I'm gonna continue watching it
Joffrey, gus fring is my favorite
And there is me. Who always root for the villain. And the more evil and the better how it plays. The more I love them lol
My number one is Christoph Walz in IB, his "evilism" is so sophisticated and makes me shiver every time.
Now the casting of Louise Fletcher in the original "Flowers in the Attic" as the grandmother makes sense...lol. I've only seen cuckoo's nest once, but I see the resemblance between Nurse Ratchet and the grandmother.
Pam Ferris is also a good one. She played Trunchbull in Mathilda and aunt Marge in the 3rd Harry Potter movie.
How has no one mentioned Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs in Euphoria, he plays that character so well it gave me chills...
Nice!
As many have mentioned Dolores Umbridge,
I also have Tobias Menzies and his charachter Black Jack Randall in Outlander. It's hard to see past the character there.
And i know that she isn't really evil but Alison Arngrim still get hateful comments for her part in Little house on the prairie!
Joffrey is best🔥 best villian
A good villain can't be hated so I don't understand this list
I just read an article where Martha Stewart had a date with Anthony Hopkins, but couldn't keep dating him because she kept thinking he was going to EAT her! She said she just couldn't get past the Hannibal Lector thing, every time she thought of being alone with him she would get scared.... 😄
Awesome video 👌
U didn't even watch it bro
I want to say Rufus Sewell as John Smith in Man in the High Castle. The level of betrayal...😱
How did you miss William Atherton? He was so good as Walter Peck (the EPA guy) in Ghostbusters that he had to suffer children calling him "dickless" to his face. He also played the scummy reporter in Die Hard I and II.
Eat it, Harvey!
Excellent pick.
Joaquin Phoenix as Commodus is number 1 for sure. Not even up for debate
I’ve never watched Hannibal and now I kind of want to
Confused cos you didn't say what shows some were from. Loved the ones I knew but maybe specify next time :/
Tom Hiddleson is perfect for Playing Hero, Anti-hero and villain
#1 should be Andrew J Robinson. His role as the Scorpio killer in Dirty Harry actually had people threatening him in real life.
Joaquin Phoenix, "GLADIATOR" should have been on the list if not #1
After seeing Robert Lasardo, who was so convincing as a bad guy, on "Nip/Tuck", my first instinct, if I saw him in a dark alley, would've been to scream and run, lol.
Ok, first Hux doesn’t make the list. Episodes 8 and 9 turned him into a punchline and he was generally forgettable as a villain. Second, Umbridge was way worse than Bellatrix. There was no one in the series that I wanted to die more than her. Finally, what exactly was Killmonger’s redemption arc? He was bad until the end with no regrets or change of heart.
I firmly agree with everything you said💯
I think everyone should start mentioning Michael Fassbender as Edwin Epps at some point soon!
Since I haven’t seen it.
Eichorst on The Strain.
Longshanks in Braveheart.
Seeing Helena Bonham Carter being weird is like butter on toast. That’s what we’re here for.
Linda Blair “exorcist” was feared for years.
Not sure if anyone mentioned the governor from The Walking Dead yet. But I've been around since color TV was the newest thing and no actor has made me hate a character more than David Morrissey. My hat goes off to him, thank you David!
You forgot Parker Posey from Lost in Space!
Quite often it's the good acting of an evil character that can make a movie or TV show so interesting and successful.
I felt nothing when serious black died, and the reason behind that is I hated his character or strongly disliked him
I read some of the books
I agree
yes moriarty in sherlock is such a good character!!!! i love that show so much.
It just prove how good of an actor they are!
Surprised Thomas F. Wilson as Biff from BTTF wasn't on the list.
Tell Cersei...I want her to know it was me 😏
You people forgot to mention Kevin Spacey! Absolutely brilliant in House of Cards.
The other person is Homelander from The Boys.
Louise Fletcher did a brilliant job making her character Kai
Winn one of the most hated characters on Star Trek Deep Space Nine also. That character was such a scheming slimy villain, I was always hoping she would meet her demise ASAP lol.
Ummm... Where's the Homelander. Also why is Hux here
The fact that Ramsey Bolton wasn't mentioned bothers me.
As it should
I love Johnny in Cobra Kia. The show makes him human. He grows up and truthfully, what would he be better as than a dojo sensei. He did put the trophy in Damn You Son"s hand acknowledging his acceptance of his victory. Johnny was an accomplished martial artist in a top competition school. His training method may not have been the most zen, but he was good at his craft.
Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge
0:21 "Like Dath Vader..... and who??"
They should have included the character of Dolores Umbridge.....people hate her more than Bellatrix Lestrange.
If you see this, have a wonderful day and stay safe!💕💖
I post vidz btw💖
Chillin' with Rachel 💛 u too & me too
I'd he should be here, even if he still lacks screen recognition, but The Homelander as the guy who you know can kill anybody, and will kill anybody he shares a screen with, and you know he will just get away with it, definitely should earn him some recognition, every scene he's with another character from the show makes you worry that character's life regardless of who they are.
The only evil thing the Joffrey actor did was refuse to act anymore.
i have one name
arturo
Wait, Anthony Hopkins was Odin. I never even noticed it.
Most of them look like real life villains or maybe look mean and sassy........
*and don't forget about Ben Kingsley he looks so nice and yet a little scary...*
Anthony hopkins? You mean Odin? You mean old man from transformer? You are joking he is the most loved here....imagine bein his grandson? I'd be lucky
I hate literally none of these people. They're all super nice and once you realize how nice they are, you're surprised how well they acted for those villain roles.
I never understood this kind of thinking.
They are actors, it's what they do.
Do I hate professor Umbridge? With a passion! Does that mean I hate Imelda Staunton? Heck no!
It's. Just. Acting.
I can vouch for Dolores Umbridge for Harry Potter, Denethor for Lotr, and Jar Jar Binks for Star Wars
I don't think anyone has hated Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter! He was almost an anti-hero in the movie. People cheered when they saw that he was going after the Psychologist who kept him prisoner at the end!
