Out of all the videos I looked up to dye your interior you are the only one I have seen that actually didn't make it complicated or that I have to go out and buy expensive tools thank you very much for keeping it simple and understanding great video.
You were getting those runs on your adhesion promoter because you had the gun set up incorrectly! You're supposed to open the fan and adjust your material. Very easy to get a nice even layer even with that cheap gun. Adjust air flow, adjust your fan, and also your material and you get nice even coats. When I saw you do the same thing with the actual base color, it was a cringe moment for me! Cool vid though!
Hey there, thanks for letting me know. I only used the gun I think twice before I took this video. In regards to the runs, I just wiped anything away that didn’t look right before it dried and it was perfect at the end. Since it’s a dye it’s sort of like “self leveling” in that the end finish did not show the runs since it soaks in
The dye looks good but if you do not add a crosslinker you will not have any chemical resistance . For instance if you take 91 % alcohol and wipe it over the surface or even hand sanitizer the color will come off . So using professional products would make that job last a lot longer
I clicked the link in the description but which one do I get to for the same exact stuff you had in the video I’m trying to make my seats leather seats black too
hello, i have sprayed my seats and looks good but when i put a finger to see if it is dry, a dust of spray remain on my finger.. what can i apply to not stick to my clothes?
For the plastic trim pieces I recommend sanding, priming, and painting them. That’s what I did for the plastic pieces around the car and it has held up perfectly. I’ve spoken to the manufactures of the dye several times and they say it is only meant for leather or leather like surfaces.
Just F.Y.I. for anyone that tries this - please open (widen) the fan (spray pattern) on the paint gun. The coats will lay down WAY better with less striping, runs, and most likely use much less material.
Yes, I would mostly agree but I would also like to mention that this dye is very forgiving and comes with a sponge to be used as the applicator for anyone who doesn’t use a spray gun. If you do give this a try you’ll notice the dye soaks in and doesn’t really streak (except maybe in extreme cases)
@@governsgarage9103 YES BUT THERE'S STILL A CHANCE OF RUNS WHEN SPRAYING A STREAM LIKE THAT AND WILL DEFINITELY REQUIRE MORE MATERIAL OVER EVEN COATS AND COVERAGE. BUT GOOD JOB JUST THE SAME.
@@sethfz no I still haven’t done it yet. The car has been sitting for over a year because my license got suspended but it’s all good now. I want to get it done asap probably some time in the summer when I finish my car note. I will keep you updated when I do it right!
Does the come off on your pants with hot weather or something or if the seat gets little bit wet from sweat or something? And does it crack over time? And is it easy to remove the paint?
great video my guy, how’s it doing 2 years later? i’m about to buy the kit to dye my seats red in my g37 coupe. i’m excited, i did have a couple questions though. You said it cost $10 for the sprayer but how much was the whole air compressor and everything like that?
Kinda seems contradictory of the product manufacturer if it need a adhesion promoter. but it's water based so it soaks right in would you not need the first step if that were true. Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Kinda funny you mention it. I never really thought about it until I saw the comments. I will say though that I haven’t had a single issue with the dye so far
Absolutely, it’s good for pretty much the whole interior as long as it’s leather or vinyl. For plastic parts I would use regular spray paint and just make sure to prep everything well. Seatbelts cannot really take dye and will need to be replaced. This company also sells carpet dye but I have not used it to verify how well it works
At the time the largest size was 32 oz so I ordered that but I also got a 16 oz bottle in case I needed extra (I didn’t) but now I have extra in case I ever change anything in the interior
My seats have heaters and coolers in them, so they’re more sensitive ig with all the little holes in them for ventilation. Is using this process safe for it??
I don’t think it would be an issue. I would give the company a call they’re super helpful with great customer service. My guess is as long as there’s no power to them it shouldn’t be an issue
I am not sure about that, probably a good question for the manufacturer. I will say this is DEFINITELY a dye though. It does not create a layer on top like some of the cheaper spray can options, it actually soaks in.
What all do I need for the spray gun? And where can I go to order everything I need with the spray gun. Is whats in the spray gun a dye, paint, or powder?
The dye I used is in the description, it’s a water based dye as opposed to oil based that you would find in the spray can dyes. It soaks into the leather so it will not scratch off. I just used a spray gun from harbor freight to apply it with it was around $10

Thanks for taking the time to post. I want to do a color change on a Z4.
Going to do one on my z3 as well
Funny.. I'm here because I need to freshen up the black leather seats in my Z4!
Me too 😅 , for those who did , does it last ?
How do these seats look today? Any updates?
Your working boots and that "blow dryer" are a must have hahahahahaha
Good job on the seats by the way!!
Good guide . The only thing i would suggest is a smaller air cap 0.8 / 1.0 gun setup .
The "brillo pad" is scotchbrite, available at any automotive paint supplier.
Very helping I will use the same as I will dye mine too, only needs to know where to get the dye
You know there are adjustments on that spray gun that control fluid and pattern so you won't get runs.
Is it still holding up for this day ?

Does anyone know if this dye works on vinyl as well?
Can you post a link to your paint gun? You’ve made this appear not too daunting
I just used the cheapest one they had at harbor freight. It’s a very doable project
absolutely beautiful job may I ask what is the colour code you uesd in this video please
The color I used was “Lexus Black - LEXUS5”
Can you wipe on the dye with an applicator vs. spraying it?
