Years ago, I was talking to a stranger at a dinner party and told him that I was going to write a book. Generally, that remark gets oooo's and ahhhhhh's from people. But this guy just said "And how long have you been planning to write this book?" I told him I'd been collecting information and ideas for the last 20 years, and he said "Forget it. You're obviously not going to write it." This shook me up enough to tickle my "I'll-show-you bone". I sent this man my first 4 published books. The next three I didn't bother. If he hadn't rattled my chain, I would probably still be just talking about it.😂😂

I used to be exactly the same, in fact I would spend ages making notes either about the idea or to try and think one up, and not actually do the work because I was too busy fine-tuning the ideas, or researching them. Once I started showing up at my desk every day (even if I was in a really flat mood and only felt capable of doing a quick scribble) I started to detach from that mindset gradually. I think it might be connected to perfectionism, as I just started doing a new thing of painting but allowing myself to do bad work, in fact encouraging myself to do bad work, and finally I feel like I'm getting some traction, and I can paint freely and enjoy it. Ideas are coming from the work I've done rather than from my thinking, which always resulted in disappointment as I would spend hours trying to have the perfect idea only to find when I started the project, it didn't work. So I think this video is bang on and I wish you lots of luck with trying out just showing up and doing something, it really works!

For quite a while I was stuck in a perfectionist mindset which resulted in me being very unproductive and losing my passion for creating art. So true. I also believe the “muse” or “energy” or whatever you call it will find who’s working. There’s a crazy phenomenon on this (forget what it’s called) but there’s an example of two authors one of which didn’t act on an idea for a book, and their good friend and colleague who they connected with one a year or so, knowing nothing about the book idea, started writing that very book. It’s why I stand firm in, “create something every day”. Doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, doesn’t have to be world changing, doesn’t even have to be finished. But greasing that creative groove is powerful. As a teacher, you give a lot. Try giving to yourself first. Maybe it’s 5 min sketch during your morning coffee. For me, showing up every day is about building a relationship with my inner artist, others may call this the muse or the diamon. We are in service to this source of creativity & imagination and we have to make sacrifices of our time & energy in dedication to this deity. If we commit to this relationship, hold a space to reach out, listen & trust it will lead us to who we actually are, what our art is about, to our authentic voice and style. Your ego, your mind, what you think isn’t your art, it is something deeper & showing up, being patient & developing a daily practice is the only way to have something that truly expresses your soul. And that is always more satisfying.

I have written a book consisting of stories, write-ups and my personal reflections on life and existence. You can call it a collection of my writings done over the years. It's available on Amazon. But now I am planning to bring out a revised edition, with some changes made, plus some new write-ups added. Once the new book is out, it will be available on Amazon, with its previous edition withdrawn from the site. I feel our lives are nothing without creativity. Everything else is just eat, shit and repeat. It's only creativity that has brought human civilization this far - be it artistic, scientific or any other form of creativity. Thanks a ton for this video. And keep making more such videos.

I agree about not needing the fancy materials. Many years ago I did a drawing for a friend of my mum. He was an Italian man who had come to the UK before the war. I was a bit embarrassed about the quality of the paper I had drawn on (we never had money so it was very rough paper). He told me, during the war he and his dad and brother were taken into an internment camp (because they were italian in the UK) and they used to draw on old newspapers. He said its not the materials, its what you do with them that makes them art.

Same goes for dating. I think a lot of people don’t see that as a creative activity. When I was in that world, someone said, “Focus on the skill (development), not the outcome,” which is exactly what you’re saying here. Ultimately, we can’t really control everything about our artistic lives but we can usually decide to put in the work. When you do that, everything else seems like an excuse to procrastinate or quit.

I find myself in need of this reminder. I often find excuses to avoid creating art, whether it's doubting my abilities compared to others on social media or convincing myself that I need certain materials before I can start a project. However, I realize now that these are merely distractions. You're correct; everything I need to excel is already within me. It's up to me to take that first step. Additionally, I appreciate the analogy that five minutes of focused effort can yield as much as three hours of distracted work.

100% agree. Years ago when I started setting creating goals (3 peices a day) it escalated into 5 to 10 a day. I got obsessed. Was that work good? Not at all! But I've been consistent ever since and focus more on quality most days. But still to this day I sometimes have nothing to give. So I sit down and just copy something for the ritual. The ritual of creating and not focusing on perfection is as fun as those great pieces you are proud of.

    • @GinnyStLawrence
      @GinnyStLawrence  15 днів тому +2

Depends on what your everyday looks like.. in this video I describe 5 minutes a day. That (to me) doesn’t lead to burnout. I brush my teeth every day, twice a day. Do I always want to? Not really. But it takes 5 minutes and I feel better afterwards.
I think some people see “make art everyday” and it triggers them deeply. That’s not the intention of this video or my message. What I hope to leave people with is: go make something… work towards your creative expression everyday for at least 5 minutes a day. Simple doodle, cleaning brushes, etc. 5 minutes. Even if you sit there and draw circles over and over and over.. it’s 5 minutes.

Two years into my creative process. Perfectionism was the first roadblock. Therapist suggested I just start with what I have on hand. Learned I needed internal art in journals for personal development and that I need to shift between external art for others. Some of it is not meant to be seen, no performing, raw intuitive expression. Giving out little mini art watercolor squares with impactful sayings is so rewarding. You can really tell when creativity is something close to someone's heart, they're soul is untethered to make it a daily practice and just part of their lifestyle, like their art is their baby. They just keep watering it, so their selves anf art can change, grow, and evolve.

Couldn't agree more. People will forget things when they stop doing those things. To become the success you strive to be, you have to do it until you are satisfied with it. To be is to do, and to do is to be, as Socrates once echoed. So don't lose yourself to the passage of time. Do something that you will be remembered for. I do not think Socrates would have ever guessed that over 2000 years later in history that someone would ever be able to acknowledge his own existence from his time. Let alone be viewed as a great figure. It is funny because he never believed in writing down any of his dialogues, but fondly his student Plato did. He etched the wisdom of Socrates to be recorded in the history of humanity for as long as it will go from here.

I've definitely spent the last few years having fallen into the trap of focussing too much on the end product. It's fine to do that when it's something like a comic I'd like to publish or if it's a commission, the product is part of that process. But for the casual stuff like doodling in sketchbooks or just experimenting with different mediums or styles, I'm getting better at focussing more on enjoying what I'm doing rather than focussing only on what I'm creating.

I don't have the know how or mental capacity of marketing to put my books into people's hands. (I'm autistic, it's a literal mental block so no, I can't just learn how to market. I've tried.) Marketing is often about relatability and art is about emotional resonance too on the side of the consumer. Maybe you've put yourself in the wrong places and before people if you weren't received in a positive way?
What are your books about? Who are they really for? Who can resonate with the stories? What can they learn from it? Who can benefit from what you have to give and how? These are important questions to ask, so you can focus on your particular niche instead of relying on some marketing "specialist" to bring in customers. Many of those "specialists or "art managers" will just take your money without delivering any results they promise and then even blame you for the results and call your art crap. Neurotypicals don't relate well with neurodivergent peole and their struggles, there is usually a clash in communication when they're forced to work together. Keep that in mind.
It's better to build things up from scratch when you are personally engaged in the process, because you know your message best and you care about it most and you have to care about the people who become your first supporters too. You have to learn how to serve them best without compromising on your values, you have to discover that middle ground because no one else with care about it more and it has to be personal. You have to learn how to take feedback and how to ignore nonconstructive comments. You can call in advisors and other specialists when you are at the stage where you know your core products and when you have enough discernment to reject incompatible "help".
Best of luck to you! May you find the best path to express yourself and relate to others! ;)
PS: I believe the video was about creating art and expressing yourself, not as much about selling it - that's a different problem. Developing your skill vs monetizing it. You just admitted that you have everything you need to create your art, because you've already created it. Now you have to figure out who can receive it - that's the next level of the journey.

i think the "don't draw everyday" is right only when is understood properly, you don't have to obsess you about drawing forcingly everyday, for hours, especially when you are still a begginer, you will end up hate it, and also not have the time to learn, and be not able to handle the stress either, but you will have to build up time to time, to draw more and more, cause real pros draw and work kind of daily, is nonsense to think you can work in art if you don't have the ability to handle some hours daily, how can you prolific? about the training side, is similar, because you will end up to need train the stamina anyway.
