How to play the game of life

- Our modern world assumes there has to be a rigid separation between work and play. But the conventional path of finding a job and climbing the ladder of advancement is something that no longer works for many people. A growing number of people are asking: how can I build a life I don’t feel the need to escape from?
It’s possible to do work that genuinely feels like play, and when you pursue this path it unlocks all kinds of incredible opportunities and puts you on the path to mastery. In this video I’ll share some ideas and psychological strategies on how you can do this, and we’ll look at the remarkable story of Yoky Matsuoka.

I'd love to know your own experiences with how you've approached your own life with play in the comments. What has been really effective and powerful for you?
PS. Please beware of scammers in the comment section impersonating me. I will never ask you to contact me through "telegram" or ask for any random payments of any kind. I don't know if I have approached things through play but it is actually something I am trying to implement now. But the only reason I chase my dreams is because of my parents, in particular my father. Born in an African village in the 1940s he chose to learn French instead of English like his classmates and went to university in France to study journalism. Not business to make more money. Journalism. He then found his way to writing articles and translating for a bilingual magazine...one day he wrote an article about African brain drain, someone important read that article. That man contacted him and gave him a job. Following his heart led him to getting a job in one of the best European institutions. A job that now people have to do multiple degrees and have years of experience to get. Since he saw how his life turned out he always encouraged us to follow our dreams. That's the only way we persist during the failures.

Let’s say I’ve been working (and playing) on the idea of working as play. I’m an actor and on last November I reproduced Alan Watt’s lecture “Work as play” for 3 nights to bring this subject afloat. We should rethink our way of living.
Throughout my life work and play have interconnected I started as a participant moved into coaching onto ownership into hosting my own television show into game day televised play by play and color analysis the circle of play . Can be very rewarding if one simply allows themselves to simply play. These examples lead to building a company around you guessed it play. I speak all over the world and I see it as nothing more than play I don't live to work...
"The master has failed even more times than the beginner has tried."
What a great quote! I'm going to use that.
When playing any game against someone I drop the:
"I've forgotten some stuff about this game you haven't even learned yet"

When I was a child I was constantly criticized and told I was stupid. Although naturally curious and playful, I grew to fear failure. This really handicapped me. In my mid-twenties I started to stretch and break out of the identity I was taught. I’m a retired engineer now and my life has been full of learning and growth. I’m very fortunate and grateful.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful comment, PapaWhisky! Every kind and positive message like yours is a chance to inspire hope in someone else, and I'm grateful you found me
It seems like her parents supported her. That’s a big factor to success. It’s a foundational factor. If you have CPTSD, please don’t castigate yourself if your trauma did not turn into growth. We have different baselines. We are not lost yet.
I agree having supportive parents goes a long way. But even people in the worst of situations can have success with a growth mindset
That’s the story you’re going to tell?
I believe she was only sharing encouragement while pointing out an equally important fact. That early trauma and lack of enough positive support, if any, vastly affects one's trajectory. But I wouldn't judge so quickly that this video's message was too over anyone's head.
I’m 40 and only just now managing to turn the trauma into something useful 😂😅
Totally hear where you’re coming from. Hating yourself for not “being there” yet helps nobody
Big love to everyone
I'm having such a play life. I made money with more than 80+ job titles, and all were creative, crazy or even out of the box. The core word, he doesn't say enough is play. Play is how nature invented learning. It engages you whole. Play with everything. Everything = play.
Were you always like that? If so, what a blessing, if not, how did you develop it?
All I'd ever want to learn is HOW to get there from a detached, anxious consciousness. Like PRACTICALLY, not in terms of abstracts. Feels impossible at times
I’m living an amazing life full of struggle , fear , with a joyful attitude that has blessed me with the most random luck on the planet. Truly I wish to share my energy with others so they can have my positive outlook , but it’s so difficult to put into words 😅
Bro im the complete opposite pls tell me how to be optimistic
This is a beautiful comment !! God bless you !!
@thisistheron First, congrats on being blissful despite that hardships in your life. That's amazing. If you could be so kind to share your knowledge, please. You'd help anyone and everyone reading it.
I've been told that gratefulness and mindfulness are key to changing mindsets, and I was successful last year for a while in doing so. But now I'm back at having ruminating negative thoughts. Is there something else that I am missing?
Thank you for your time and knowledge. 🙏🏼
I appreciate all the love . Since this post I’ve had to face some of the most extreme challenges of my life , and somehow , finding these comments on this post is all I needed to remind me why I think the way I think . The breadcrumbs of joy that you leave behind will always be there when your soul needs nourishment. I believe every moment has a positive perception, and I trust that always choosing the positive option will result in the most positive outcome , even if it’s not immediately clear how.
Every day , every moment , and all the people we come across , are opportunities for unique dynamics. Embrace it all !
When you learn something ans you failed - Congratulations, now you know an instance of a thing that doesn't work, basically you learned something. Keep going.

Brother, don’t wait on the acknowledgment or gratification of others to push you towards what’s most important in life - especially knowledge
I dont know if this will help anyone but I had the oppertunity to build a house on a truck with zero previous experience which was by far the biggest project ever to me, it was duanting and freaked me out so what I did was make a deal with myself that if I took on the project that any time I felt overwhelmed or stuck that I could stop whatever I was doing and go do something else for as long as I wanted until I felt like trying again. This one thing took all the pressure and anxiety out of it and allowed me to think about problems at a speed I could handle, it utterly transformed my idea of what I was capable of if I can operate under no pressure. I simply had no idea how good I was at visualizing problems and solutions because I also didn't know how my brain gets completely shut down when experienceing anxiety.
Thank you for sharing your story ✌🏾
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
That’s amazing! Thank you for sharing 😊
This is great, and reminds me of what is often described as ADHD / VAST 'overwhelm' -- where you're so paralysed by options or the fear of success or failure that you just do nothing instead. Brilliant, thank you
This is an amazing piece of advice, Jedics. Thanks so much for taking the time to share it! Similarly, a mentor of mine recommended taking a break when you're stuck on a problem to have a walk, or meet a friend, or do something mindless for a bit. Your unconscious mind is still working on the problem in the background, and it often leads to sudden insights or realizations that never would've happened without the break. Your story is awesome and inspiring, I appreciate you my friend

This is a masterpiece that encapsulates the capability of people to live free. I was born a boy in a hole and learned many of these lessons climbing out and it feels like i have lived at least 4 lives, and i am at the beginning of my 5th and most ambitious. It's daunting, scary every time. But you just have to believe in yourself, steady the ship, learn from your mistakes, and accept the outcome as your own. And always get up and try again, even if its something different. Own it, the good and the bad or you just won't grow to your potential. I remain hopeful i will get there and will try to enjoy the journey.
Amen dude, same here.
Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to share such a kind and heartwarming message with us Bob! You are an inspiration for us all. May you continue to follow your bliss on the cusp of your 5th and most ambitious endeavour. I appreciate you, my friend!
I'm so tired of living, and yet I have not even really lived 😢
😢
What would make you feel like you have lived?
How old are you?
I understand completely but keep pushing working out helps for me
Then you’re not tired of living
What I learned: become more playful and curious like you were as a child. Ask myself: what is something that is like play to me but looks like work to others? And have a growth mindset looking at the circumstances in life as opportunities to become stronger.
I failed, but I'm not a failure
Brother, why even go the lengths to publicly say you’ve failed online
You’ll come to realize identifying what would should be considered a lesson, or a door to improvement as a failure is redundant, and reduces your drive for the very goals you wish to obtain or aim for
Good point.
There are no winners that did not fail. Failure made them what they are, as without it, they wouldn't have learned.
I love how you magically fit everything together like a masterful puzzle. Also, excellent movie choices! "Office Space" is a damn classic! The networks that do it are always active and constantly growing, UA-cam being a web of relationships where it’s primary attraction is emotion of various spectrums. The singular emotion I get from watching this video is singular and universal: Hope. Hope your life if filled with as much hope as your give to others.

Many years ago I wrote in a facebook post the second most important lesson anyone can teach there children is to ask, ask, ask. If your children learn this lesson while they still have their innocent inquisitive mind their lives will unfold like a flower. Full of adventure and wonder. It is because we ask, we will truly connect with our intuitions, our feelings and our heart. Then we will have learned the most important lesson of all.
Love Always🥰

This video MUST be shown in high school to young teenagers that are trying to decide the right path to take in their lives. The impact it could potentially have on their life decisions is profound. This is one of THE best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. It had quite an impact on me and I will share this video with other people in my life that are struggling on their journey. So glad I found this channel.
Oh My Elson! You picked a fav movie of mine! Love, love, love Office Space! I quote it weekly at work. My family was talking today about the creativity us kids were aloud to have at our home. My Dad was always adding on to our tiny house. No end to gravel piles, pieces of wood, etc that we could play in or create art with. And - if we made a Lincoln Log village it was aloud to stay on the coffee table for a week! No wonder I stayed under my desk in Kindergarten and just wanted to go home. Thanks for another great "deep thinking" video!!
It was only the arts and crafts in most classes that kept me from being too depressed as a loner child. Reading outside of class also helped my imagination.
Hey Jen! I think of Office Space as one of the great 'cubicle movies' with lots of memorable quotes that anyone who's worked in an office can relate to. Or anyone who's had a case of the Mondays.
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. It sounds like you had a wonderful childhood and were able to retain that sense of wonder, creativity and play. Your continued support means the world to me, my friend. Big love to you and yours

I use to go to therapy. I stopped because I never got anything out of it. They kept asking questions I didn't know the answer to. You are entering my subconscious and answering those questions for me. This is amazing. It is opening up windows to the past that I had closed long ago. Little by little memories are coming back to who I used to be, my true self and not who I was told to be. Now how am I going to make this work now that I'm much older?
Thanks so much for the kind and thoughtful message, Tygo! Big love
If you really want for some reason go to therapy and dont like one - you can try another. Some styles really may not work especially for man....
You will make it work By starting from 0 and taking small(smallest possible if its too daunting) steps, one step at a time.

I'm always delighted to see one of your videos.
Truth be told, I think I'm someone with a fixed mindset. I'm trying to change that but it's hard.
I grew up in a quite abusive environment in which any kind of failure was grounds for harsh punishment, or a justification for ongoing abuse.
Then, as an adult, I went into the workforce where in multiple jobs, one small mistake is enough to get you fired.
I know that's all too much information, but my point is that I find it difficult to switch to a growth mindset when my overwhelming experience has been that if you're not good at something right away, then the consequences of any failure, no matter how small, will always be awful.
It's not too much information. It's the perfect amount! Thank you for sharing your difficult early experiences, it's not easy to share, and I believe when we do, it helps everyone reading to feel less alone. Dr. Carol Dweck's book "Mindset" is really great and offers practical tips for how to develop more of a growth mindset. It's not something that happens overnight, but the benefits are huge. Being okay with failure is, I think, a modern-day superpower. Big love to you and yours my friend!
Another great video as always. Many thanks, Elson. Funny how life goes, I used to play guitar but I wrecked my ears a few years ago. I was starting to get tired of music anyway after doing it for so many years, but the ear trauma let me move on. By chance I took a trip to Mexico, and the first day there I started learning Spanish and I found that I really enjoyed it. After a little over 4 years of learning I can hold a decent conversation and have met lots of new people! (And the ears have recovered somewhat...)
Thanks so much, Jeff! What an extraordinary journey you've been on. An interesting synchronicity: I recently watched a movie called "the Sound of Metal" about a musician who's forced to move on from music after damage to his hearing. I found it very moving.
May you continue to follow your bliss, my friend!

Thanks for this! Came exactly at the right time when I needed it. Currently at an intersection in my life where I’m trying to decide what to do and starting my own business and I’ve always had a lot of insecurity around whether I’m picking the right thing and whether I enjoy it and it will make money. I will say the only thing missing from this is capitalism, and how it stop us from pursuing what we really want. It keeps us chained it to a desk, like the movie office space, and makes us do what we otherwise wouldn’t want to do. Great video, subbed!
I sense a bit of Kierkegaard's philosophy with the suffering and despair of the tragic hero. This video really made me think about my life's story.
This is all spot on. I haven't achieved anything on a magnitude comparable to the examples here, but my own life reiterates all these points. I've always been an intensely curious person, ever since I was a kid. This has led me on an academic journey that has changed courses more than once as I follow my curiosity. I recently finished my PhD in biophysics, but my formal education is only about half of my education. I've embraced informal education in the form of books and podcasts etc. I've always viewed my academic journey as more of a spiritual journey than an intellectual one. Since day 1 of college to the day I completed my PhD, I was driven by a desire to understand myself and the world around me. The formal successes along the way were just a small bonus to the real value I was gaining every day. I would have never even completed my bachelors if I were motivated by a desire for success, or status, or money. That's too boring for me and I would not have been able to make the painful grind.

Great video, Elson! Thank you and we really appreciate your work.
I had been waiting for this video and had no idea it had already been uploaded until now. I look forward to the next one too! Can we get a hint to what the element is?
Thanks so much, Sukhwinder! Here's a hint:
I am neither seen nor touched, yet I shift the paths of lives with my presence. When absent, despair can take hold. But when abundant, doors seem to open by themselves. I am sought by many, but wielded by few. What am I?
Great video, thank You for creating it. Gave me a lot of to think about 👍
Thanks so much, Mr. Martins!
I love your videos! They're incredibly informative and engaging. Thank you for giving me hope and take action rewriting my story. Recently, I came across the trend of finding your doppelgänger in a museum. Could you make a video explaining this phenomenon?
Thanks so much Jane, I also appreciate your suggestion, that's really interesting. I did do a video that touched briefly on the idea of doppelgängers here if you haven't seen it yet: ua-cam.com/video/UOPGohM4wo8/v-deo.html
Thanks again for your support! Big love to you and yours
