I knew there was a reason I moved South 46 years ago! I was shivering just watching this video Sandy. You have a beautiful property Sandy and the snow makes it picture perfect... BUT... I think I would only want to visit in the June-August time frame!!

    Hi Sandy.
Twelve years ago, I moved from Eastern Ontario to central Alberta.
Last week, we received 6 inches of wet, heavy, dense snow.
My partner has lived in the Western prairies for most of her life. She helped shovel the walkway. She has said it was the heaviest snow she had ever encountered. When I told her that snow in Ontario and Quebec was heavy like that, she was amazed.
    Good luck with your snow.
The good news is that you have a mill, so you can harvest and utilize any damaged trees.

I’m always amazed at how flexible healthy trees can be. Here in the PNW, watching these 120+ ft. tall firs sway violently in wind gusts make one appreciate the strength of wood.

I always revel in the fact that I can handle most of the things that Mother Nature throws at me. That sort of thing brings out the man in you. It can be a lot of work at times, but work is what keeps the wheels turning and the heart pumping. Looking forward to a winter storm warning for my place from tonight until Friday. I've already got everything put away, so I'll have no obstacles when it comes to plowing. I have an open cab 3046R, so I can relate to you riding that mini-skid in the snow. Good luck to you, and I hope your ground freezes soon!

Sometimes managing a forest isn't easy or simple. What I do know is when they snap it means a forest is ready to be thinned. The wind will give the standing strength. When it this heavy and the trees are close and thick growth it makes trees week due to lack of wind. Man I feel for you

Some decades ago in Massachusetts we got a lot of heavy, wet snow. It was late in the season - May. Took down 30 trees on our neighbor's property and quite a few on ours. A sawmill took the downed trees away at a good price, but it took years for me to clear away the debris!

Had a neighbor who used to use a concrete vibrator & a generator but don't see why one of the new battery powered concrete vibrators wouldn't work just as well. Trees transmit vibrations amazingly well. Lay the vibrator head against the trunk and 5-10 seconds of pulling the trigger works better than a good wind gust to drop all the snow out of the tree. Just be ready to get cold and wet.

That little machine shocked me. I didn’t think those skinny tracks with the weight of the machine and not just 2 feet of snow, but 2 feet of wet snow, would have made even the first pass never mind all the rest of it. That kind of snow is at least 4x heavier than regular snow, I won’t be so prejudice the next time.
My buddy has one and it didn’t work to well in the mud pit yard of mine, but your machine might have wider tracks or perhaps a better machine than the bobcat he has.
Good thing you were home and not sick so that you were able to get done what you did because I’m sure no matter how well you build things, there’s only so many trees that can land on it before you got yourself a game of jenga.

Hello Sandy. I hope you got the right amount of wind to save some of the trees. Perhaps the ones that broke can be used for the shed.
    Have good or better days!

I wonder if a loud noise would clear the trees, like the ski resorts do sometimes.
Maybe a giant bell to ring.

Hopefully you got just enough of a breeze for most of the trees to unload without breaking in a big wind! Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Dynamite 🧨🧨🧨🧨
The thunder from the Dynamites will shake the snow off the trees 😂
Use plenty! Mix with nitrogen fertilizer if you need to.

Looks like an Abominable on a Beumalight!! Considering wind is your trees enemy, this time you are hoping for a nice breeze to knock the snow off! You sure had an awful lot of bent (hopefully not snapped) red pines!! Hopefully the damage will be as minimal as possible, and no further losses!

1991 we had an ice storm in WNY. It leveled 90% of my red pines. Probably 5 acres. Got my woodmizer sawill about 4 years later. Wish I would have had it earlier

I can imagine that feeling. Sad when a few days later things are cleared up with the weather and the trees change the landscape so much

If you have a high powered rifle, you can fire it near the trees you are worried about and the concussion will usually knock snow off the trees. Of course you need to pay attention to where you are shooting.

Since you said no wind could you use snow blower to create a little wind? So long as snow isn't a wet snow.

  • @mrfrost663

You can use a leaf blower to blow the snow off the machines.
