- Recently went digging through some of my Dad's old VHS tapes of football bits-and-bobs. Found this lovely little six-minute tribute to Cloughy, broadcast on the occasion of his retirement from football, 1993.

If only we could bring him back and replace boring Gary Lineker on match of the day!
He's the only manager I shed a tear for when he passed, a bright light dimmed that day, god bless the great Brian Clough
And Bobby Robson ! One should’ve got the job,the other did and was lambasted the same for taking it ! 2 great football men !
There was a time during my childhood when the funniest man on television wasn't a comedian but a football manager.
sadly the game lacks such characters as Brian, what a genius
As long as the game has Mourinho, it is not lacking in characeters
He was a character that's why the media dubbed him the greatest..
His final 12 seasons at forest wer very bad
@@lewispewsey6843 his final 12 seasons he won 2 littlewoods cup trophies equivalent as EFL CUP OF TODAY pal
.
Brian clough was a legendary tv entertainer
And a great manager but he is labeled as the greatest cos of his sheer entertainment on the tv screen..
1993 final day of the season a female police officer after the match she hugged clough and sed 》》 I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL BUT THIS MAN clough IS A LEGEND 🧐🤔🤔🤔
ERM !!!!
HOW DOES THAT WORK ?
ERM?
She knew nothing about football but she called clough a legend.
What she meant was clough was a character on the tv screen that labeled him up their with the 1970s /80s legendary comedians David Jason
And ronnie barker and many more .
.
Aston villa did back to back major trophies sssshhhh but no one will remember them WHY WHY WHY ??
BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HAVE AN ENTERTAINER IN THEIR SIDE ..
TRUE.
Let's see how you respond to this PSL
@@Kill--alllll---IDF he was amazing, wasn't he, to win 2 European cups with an unfancied provincial club is as hard as it gets, and he must of been some player to have scored 251 league goals in 274 games. That's Messi/CR7 type rate and career cut short, he was too big for the dead wood at the f.a.
@@shaunpalmer3216 ok let's see how u answer this 》》Aston villa 1981 / 1982 how the frigging heck did they win league title and European Cup WTF .
Villa wer the Everton of today
.
Hey but nooooo one remembers villa
Absolutely noo one remembers villa.
But wen it comes to notts forest then hey 👋 it's Brian clough lol
.
Cloughs final 12 seasons at forest wer disastrous
Do ur research kid !
I Don't need to do research I was 16 in 1981
If only he could come back for a week, or a day, or an hour even, just to make us all smile.
ysgol3 😢
David Robinson Brian said many times how much he regretted the terms he and Peter were on when he passed
Or be Prime Minister...
I second that motion.
@@scottharbison3824 Lovely, thanks.
His back-to-back European Cups at Forest will forever stand as professional football's greatest achievement.
I think not.
paisley done it first
@@seanbonellawith a much bigger club.. Clough wins
there just isn't enough Clough on film .... everything that is is fantastic. A genius in every sense! But just look at his achievements ..... staggering!
Go on Brian Clough
Legend. He might not have been the best football manager there ever was but he'd be in the Top 1.
I was there as a blade when forest went down, to a man every United fan was singing there's only one Brian Clough, enough said.
I was there...1993...0-2. The thumbs up when Sheffield Utd. started singing 😊
Wonderful gesture by Blades fans. And stands the test of time. Brilliantly.
Remember it well, was truly moving to see the United fans singing his name.
Brian Clough thanked us afterwards in an interview. Wish we’d lost that day 😢
I was there too ❤❤cloughie
Best manager never to get the England job. But we all know the F.A. are spineless.
Clough = Legend
What if he had been appointed England manager and did as well as he did at Leeds? Clough’s talent was in building up small clubs, managers with that skill have never done well as England manager.
@@gweilospur5877 what about Redknapp?
If he’d got the job, England would have won the World Cup. Always felt he should have got it in 1990 after robson, from the point of view I think it would have reignited him. He was a bit despondent towards the end at Nottingham forest. Feeling obviously he’d taken the club as far as he could. The England job would have been a great way to leave. He was 55 in 1990. Would have been nice for him to take England to Sweden and the USA .
Quite..True! A ..Icon,of Football, and great humour.R.I.P!
Clough would have needed Peter Taylor to keep him fairly grounded, if he became England manager. Or he would have upset too many people.
However, top 5 British manager in last 60 years
Three things I've heard Clough say watching him on UA-cam:
1. The greatest days of my managerial career were at Derby (said in 1991).
2. If it wasn't for cheating and bribery, Derby would have won the European Cup.
3. I resigned from Derby County, but looking back the chairman should have resigned -- not me.
I know his best successes came during his longest tenure at Forest, but hearing those things (as a Derby fan) always makes me think "what if..."
As a forest fan, I really can’t lie, you were robbed of a lot of glory to your local rivals. I’d feel sorry for you if you lot didn’t keep getting salty over the situation.
@@zachbladen I wouldn't say robbed. Our poor directorship led to Clough's departure so we can only blame ourselves. The saltiness is fading to be honest -- Derby have been the marginally better team for the past 20 years, but neither have done a great deal in that time. I just like spreading facts about Clough's time at Derby as they often come at great surprise to people. See you in the Championship next year ;)
I could listen to Brian Clough for days on end. We were so lucky to be blessed with this extraordinary man. People like him make football great, he was big headed but in a good way. He never looked down on people for class reasons because he considered himself from the lower classes himself. This just makes ordinary people like him more, one of the legends of Sport. You can debate as to who was the best manager, but you cannot debate on who was the most entertaining, only one candidate.
Great player , great manager.
Showing pure respect for Bill Shankly as well, just as it should be. Two football legends.
RIP
Dammed United is creative and funny but bollocks that he saw Revie as a mentor. Respect but not like that. Shanks was his mentor.
Clough/Taylor.......dream team! Clough greatest manager, Taylor greatest talent spotter! The worlds a sorrier place without them! 😔
Always love this quote, “If God had wanted us to play football in the sky, He'd have put grass up there.”
I teach this quote with my youth football club and im a notts fan!
Brillaint
Simple but absolutely true
And he is still missed RIP Cloughie
Paisley, Shankly, Sir Alex and Clough.
Mourinho, you can fucking dream.
+WelshHDGamer - Fifa 15, Minecraft & Gaming Content!
add jock stein don revie, and youve the only brirsh managers that have built a legacy team with british players that conquered their league for years and europe
@@saints16o5o87 Jock was the trailblazer. As Shanks said to him after 1967. 'John You Are The Legend Now'
And Bobby Robson
Almot 10 yrs since the Big Man went. Football is poorer since.
Winning the European Cup was just as hard in the 70s as it is today. If Malmö was so shitty, how come they made it to the final instead of Real Madrid, Juventus or Liverpool, who were all in the cup that year? Less rounds = meeting the big clubs sooner, unlike today, where all teams play a billion matches to maximise TV revenue. What Clough did was absolutely beyond anything ever achieved by any other English manager. Ferguson can only dream of skills like his.
Well said
@@chriskolovos6143 i agree about brian clough, but i wish both of you would think before you open your mouths about alex ferguson, have you both forgotten what fergie achieved with aberdeen before he even joined united, was that not an amazing achievement.
@@markscanlan5147 Alex Ferguson built that Aberdeen team And beating Real Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup final was a big result. Another England manager who won lots of trophies was Bob Paisley
I agree .brugge were there in 78 .there on merit just like Malmö
@@chriskolovos6143 I agree with you Alex ferguson was great manager won loads of trophies for both aberdeen and man united and Bob paisley as well won loads of trophies as well these men you have mentioned they were great managers what brian clough did with derby county and nottingham forest was brilliant taking both teams out of the second division and taking them to first division title and winning back to back european cups with forest 2 small clubs is quite remarkable I wouldn't like to compare ferguson paisley or clough with each all 3 of them were genius great managers they didn't have the money these managers have today
United fan here, nothing but respect for this chap - RIP pal
Not sure why its relevant to announce yourself as a man u fan. Pretty irrelevant
@@SLaYDaRtH ...Not sure why it's relevant for you to pull him up on it !
Always tickles me when supporters who comment in favour of the opposite team feel the need to introduce themselves as the team they support 'United fan here' So fkin what. Just comment...
Born and bred M.U F.C Cloughie can't fault him. I would never swap Fergie for him but gee he really was an absolute football genius. You can't love football and not love Cloughie. R.I.P.
@@SLaYDaRtH Not really irrelevant. Few clubs or managers get to that level. They get spoken of in the same breath. Probably not relevant asking why .
Top man Clough no nonsense person and spoke his mind
"Where do you want to leave them John, the Manchester canal, they wouldn't get in there because of the prams"
Priceless 😊
A truly brilliant man . One of my hero’s . Says how it is and he knows he’s right. What a brilliant statement when he said that if bill shankley wanted a player to play for liverpool and he said I’ll have to talk to my agent, shankley would have hit him . And cloughie said I would have held him down so he could have hit him .
I'd love to hear a rant from him about the current game. Can you imagine how he would react to VAR.
Certain players in today's "game" on 300k a week would be shown the door in no uncertain terms.
Play for the team or you go. Simple. No nonsense.
The Premier League nowadays is Sadly Lacking a Man Like Brian Clough
A lot of talk on here about a knighthood, but I like to think Cloughie would have been proud enough to turn it down. Great little tribute to a true legend.
RIP Brian, you're sorely missed, football these days needs someone like you.
I would loved to have heard his thoughts on the fact that 69% of players in the Premier League aren't English or even British, also that you can finish 4th in the Premier League and still qualify to play in the 'Champions' League. When you see what he achieved at Nottingham Forest you can have nothing but respect for him.
One day you'll end a game of Football Manager and it will produce a montage like this for you. Six minutes of heady melancholia.
If only; FM would consider that too much fun; I mean, it's just not 'realistic'.
Mr Clough! You are the greatest! NFFC FOREVER! HE speaks about Shankley with respect! Even though NFFC and Liverpool hate each other there is still respect!
Brian Clough - Born in Middlesbrough (if you didn't know) the best Nottingham Forest manager ever!!! UTB
Hardly need to be a genius to work that out
We miss you Brian.
agents are culprits .... they are responsible for destroying the beautiful game as we knew it ....
Sad the alcoholism took him over and ruined his health.
When football was real and beautiful .
Wondering why Peter Shilton had an umbro shirt and his team mates had adidas?? Anyway great man RIP
Right attributes, right attitude and above all a right good common sense approach!! Miss you Mr Clough ⚽️
Didn't forest win the European cup in 79 then repeat the trick in 80?...to win the European cup with a club like forest but retain the thing again a year later is simply unbelievable...managers back then had to actually build a team and actually man manage because their was more characters about...I rate Clough along side Alf Ramsey Bobby Robson Alex Ferguson Jose mourinho....the crem de la crème of English football
Neil Warnock. As close as it gets. And that’s no where near. But the last of the characters.
I could listen to Cloughie all day. He speaks so much sense. He must be turning in his grave with all the overpaid softies playing football now.
They would simply be shown the door by BC. Prima Donnas & overpaid to boot.
To achieve what he did with two provincial clubs was nothing short of astonishing.
Clough would hate the game now with all the commercial and owners bullshit which many fans dislike including myself being a man Utd fan yanks who no nothing about football interfering with the team and players and sucking money out off clubs sure he would hate it🤔🤔
As probably one of the few Leeds fans to say this I think Brian Clough was an extremely talented manager, he was Charismatic, flamboyant and extremely witty which is what was so inspirational about him as a personality of the footballing world. He said what others thought. He lived by the sword and carried it well for a very long time and won trophies everywhere he went. I wish he could have stabilized Leeds when he was there but it wasn't the right time for him just after Don Revie's era had just finished. A year or two later and maybe it would have been a better time to be there. Going through history he was probably one of the best man managers of the game and he is sadly missed by this Leeds fan.
In theory, appointing a great manager to manage a great team should work; in the case of Leeds and Clough it didn't work out.
The most missed sporting personality in history.
Beautiful footballing man, it’s is true he was the best England manager never had!! Sadly missed at city ground!!
Superb - thanks for this upload - much appreciated.
Brian is the best there ever was...
I dont support any of the teams directly or indirectly linked to clough, but i will say hands down no questions he was THE GREATEST english football manager ever
Defo. Only Herbet Chapman can lay claim.
Managers come and go. Some really good, some average but Brian Clough really stood out and illuminated. Really miss Cloughie.
A total one off fantastic manager and motivator Brian Howard clough thanks for the memories
RIP Brian, You made us (Forest) who we are today, greatest manager England never had
Almost 20 long years since old big head passed. Miss you Brian
A total one off. Ask Roy kean.
I feel honoured to be a fan of the club, who had the greatest manager who's ever lived
An intelligent perceptive manager, no nonsense. Most articulate when interviewers asked silly questions, he put them right on the spot! Clough was unique.
Legend! RIP sir
No swearing please.
BRIAN CLOUGH
I love Leeds, but I love cloughie too. MOT
Hos downfall was he never went wide he was a very central striker, if he listened to likes of Moore and Charlton and avoided injury, he could of been one of the best players in the world.
I’ll never tire of watching Cloughy being interviewed. Never dull!!
Lovely vid, I love the guy, I love watching good football teams play good football, the good players at their best, & the top managers manage till they can't manage no more. Thats what I love about football, not just winning, but the beauty of it.
Also thanks to the leeds fans below who accept he was a great manager, despite the fact he made it clear how he felt about Leeds Utd. (y)
I dont want to get into a debate over who was the best, Brian Clough was Brian Clough, and I, as a Liverpool fan respect him and treasure his memory til the day I die. A great man, an honest man, and an inspiration to anyone looking to make a career in the mess that is now football. God bless him.
Without a doubt the wittiest, most charismatic man ever in football.
And one of its best managers.
RIP.
Blimey...Where have all these great player / characters gone....Robson, Best, Adams, Toshak, Gasgoine, Chopper Harris, Gemmel, Tommy Smith...just to name a tiny few
I think cloughie was an absolute genius.
You don't have to think it, it has to be true too many people agree.
Peter Taylor deserves a lot of the credit
Your right Peter Taylor does deserve a lot of credit Brian Clough and Peter Taylor one of the greatest double acts of all time same as bill shankly and Bob Paisley at Liverpool I liked Brian Clough because he spoke his mind and if it upset anybody he didn't care he said how it was Peter Taylor was at his job as well they were like brothers they both needed each other same as at the time bill shankly and Bob Paisley
RIP cloughie. boro legend
What a legend, so sad that he never got over his drinking issues. His quote of not playing football in the clouds is a classic.
OH MIST ROLLING IN FROM THE TRENT
And still won fuck all because we all know, the east side of the trent is bent
His team were one of the best teams I have seen they played amazing football and Aberdeen the early 80s from a ipswich fan
He should have been a england manager we would have won things
A true legend, in an age when the word is grossly overused. His anecdote about his trophies & caps being his qualifications is priceless & one I’ve related many times. Let’s also not forget the role of the great Peter Taylor in just about everything Brian achieved.
although he's nearly been dead for ten years, football misses brian cloug. he was a man of the people. he said what he thought. he rose about the sheep mentality and said HOW IT IS. we need more like him. not sheep who are scared to say what they think. portobello road.
The Labour Party misses people like Brian Clough (and Bill Shankly) even more than football does. What the hell happened to their clear and concise conception of socialism?
Can you imagine what Clough would say about Cristiano Ronaldo. One of the most overreated players ever. Don't get me wrong he's one of the best in the air and I respect the fact he continues to be a better player, looks after himself etc and he's also scored lots of goals but how many shots does it take for him to score. Portugal would be a much better player without him. I would have alot more respect for him if he worked as a carer or nurse earning minimum wage or what nurses get paid. So many people in the world doing great things who go unnoticed and yet we celebrate people that don't really deserve it. Any United fans out there reading this. Please don't defend him with your biased views. It's not the 90's anymore. 😂 I sound like Cloughie. Brian is and will always be a LEGEND!!!!
R.I.P Cloughie! Brain Clough's Red Army!
This great man’a achievement managing a club like Forest to two European cups will never be bettered the fact he was never offered the England job one of football’s greatest travesties.
Better to have a boss who tells you straight what he thinks .
Cloughy was the best manager of his generation on the budget he had ! We’re talking about a champion winning side of players on a small budget ! Obviously Ferguson went onto have similar achievements but Brian was the first to do it
His sin was PRIDE; this is partly what made him the man he was, but also ended the relationship with Peter Taylor - arguably the most fruitfull in the game.
Nottingham Forest Legend And Always Will Be
An iconic figure even for those not particularily into soccer.
Very much missed...
Abousloute legend RIP Sir Cloughie 🏴
And what's happened now, billionaire owners who don't give a shit, football directors (?), what the fuck do they do? Meanwhile back to my team bayern munich
He was a unique person and entertaining. A football genius.
best manager ever. i know busby revie paisley shankly etc were great managers. but clough with the greatest respect, did it, with not a lot of money, and a provincial club, and they were nowhere when he took over there. and to win what he won with what he had at his disposal, for me makes him the best there was. and of course he should have had the england job, but they didnt have the balls to give him it. brilliant fellow and the best manager
He was never knighted, but Bradley Wiggins is knighted and he is only 30 odd! What a joke! Means nothing nowadays, every tom dick and harry is knighted.
Can you imagine what he'd make of today?! Blokes being girls, girls being blokes etc. If only he could come back and tell us.
Brian Clough was not only a great manager, who took no prisoners, But He was the one that got away. and we have the clueless fa who didn't like his forthright way of doing things, that's why with those dinosaurs in charge . England never won the world cup again,
best acheivement ever. back to back european cups , league titles with forest and derby.no1 else could ever have done that with unfashionable clubs
The football fan’s hero , god bless Sir Brian
There's your next England manager, oh wait a minute!!😭😭
BC legend in every sense for the word..not a bad player too by all accounts..super opinionated above all a winner..is that not what we’d all want to be ? Right ?
Best manager in uk even 2 day no excuses straight to the point VIP sadly missed that's my opinion from nufc.
Typical Middlesbrough man, can't tell him anything
Brian never managed my club. But god I wish he had.A football genius.
boro legend RIP cloughie
amazing man
Got a great photo of Brian and me dad together in the school team . They were mates went to the same youth club in grove hill in Middlesbrough together.
Brilliant man, today we can look back at how much a genius he really was. Listen to Mark Crossley and the respect he still has and shows for The Gaffer.
Cloughie was a legend, a wonderful man.
I have his autograph and I can remember to this day how it felt to get the great man’s name on a photo, I think I told everyone in school even those that didn’t want to listen 👍👍
Hope he’ll be looking down on the lads on Sunday COYR’s
Stodgy FA mafia denied England the best manager it would have ever had
