I'm a gooner but an early 80s baby. Love football was a good player. But if he was my manager/gaffer I would have played professional easy. He was unique but spoke the truth
He robbed Jimmy Gordon's Testimonial money. Jimmy wasn't rich, just a old former 40s 50s player who Clough relied on for his trust & honesty. The Testimonial raised £7000 but Clough took a cut of £3000 from it straight after the whistle. He said the £3000 was for the 'Club' ie back pocket. Top players paid plenty money, but Jimmy was robbed by a self centred person who went too far then. Despicable.

The Forest players came out after a few pints and swiftly boarded the coach. Then Cloughie came out. He talked to each of the Bobby’s and thanked them for waiting for him. He told my friend he was a nice young man and he was sorry they had taken so long after the game. Then he asked where the team were, and went mad when he found out they were on the bus. “They’re in the warm while these nice young policemen are out here in the cold? Get ‘em out here. I want them to thank these nice officers for waiting for them.” The next thing my mate and his colleagues are shaking hands with the likes of Stuart Pearce and Des Walker who are apologising profusely. After a little while the players got back on the bus and Cloughie tapped my mate on the shoulder. “When you go home you can tell your wife you met Mr Clough can’t you?” He gave him a big stage wink and shook his hand.

I'm a Leicester City fan but absolutely loved the Clough/Forest era. Our 5,000 - 1 title win was amazing but Forest winning 2 European Cups eclipses our achievement. Cloughie was just brilliant.
Your promotion and title win wouldn't have happened if you hadn't gone into administration after building a new stadium and assembling a complete new squad with money you didn't have. The construction workers didn't even get paid. It wasn't 'amazing' it was borderline cheating - Leicester were the first and only team to do it because the FA immediately brought in new rules to prevent it happening again.

Years ago my dad always said Brian Clough would never be England manager because they always put Mr. Nice Guy "yes men" types in as manager, but England would have won a few World Cups if he was in charge.
All the struggles England have today to appoint a top manager yet somehow one of the best ever English managers, who actually wanted the job, was overlooked 🤔
What a player O’Neil was that 42 unbeaten record went on my birthday at Liverpool was at the game in the Kop but honestly what a team they had then.9th December 👍
Amazing to think that someone like clough never managed england but southgate and now carsley can......this is why we will never win a major tournament again.
I support LFC,Brian Clough is the best british manager ever,Why? He won the League title with two different clubs, Derby and Forest, look at the two of them since he left them, both still struggling. Had he stayed at Leeds they would have been his Treble.
Myself and my Dad had been to watch Derby, it was a very wet day and we were waiting for the rain to stop after the game to walk home. Clough stopped and gave us a lift home. That’s character.
Cloughie was a genius - and I'm a Nottingham born man old enough to remember the greatest of Forest's days. It's so sad that the drink got the better of him and it really robbed us all of what could have been his best days. And of course let's not forget the great Peter Taylor.
For me, Brian Clough was the greatest manager in the English game ever. If he had become England manager, never mind qualifying for World Cup finals, England would have been winning the thing.
I am born and bred Leeds, my dad a county footballer (and 20 year league referee), lifelong Leeds fan. We both believe that the Leeds board were weak and should have stood by Brian. The truth is Don DID leave a mess, unsigned contracts, veiled promises to players like Johnny Giles, a quite horrendous disciplinary situation and critically an ageing team getting passed their sell by date. At the top, only one way to go, which is one reason Don dipped. First. Brian did upset some of the players with his comments. Eddie, Allan, Peter have said as much since BUT as we hear here in this recollection, that was part of his approach - hard one moment, then conciliatory and supportive the next. For example, he genuinely thought Johnny Giles was one of the best midfielders in the world. The board should have backed him, and moved the older players on with a 3 to 5 year team plan. The first 2 years would have been rough, transitory, possibly lower table but Leeds would have been resurrected. I am sure, that Peter Taylor would have arrived in those circumstances and then Leeds could have won the European Cup. Twice, maybe more. Together they were genius. And Leeds threw it away, spent the next 16 years in the doldrums.
Every manager has their style, and also their own experiences come into how they manage. Clough had a promising career cut tragically short by injury. He never got to play any cup finals. Therefore he probably didn't have much sympathy for people like Martin. Conversely, Bob Paisley as a player was left out of the Liverpool 1950 FA Cup final (after scoring in the Semi!). He always called upon that experience as a manager when letting his players know they weren't playing, telling them: "I know just how you feel son. It happened to me too,".
Brian Clough was a genius, the old school ties at the FA weren’t brave enough to appoint the greatest manager around. They appointed yes men. He’ll never be forgotten. I miss him still.
Jimmy Gordon was Clough's trainer dogs body at Derby & N.Forest. He was paid just an working class wage & at retirement was granted a Testimonial, yes Derby v Forest. Clough told treasurer he will take half of receipts for the 'Club' ie his back pocket. At end of the game Jimmy went to collect HIS money & was given £4000 & was told Clough had already took his cut of £3000. That tells you a lot about him. Jimmy had very little of money as a player & trainer. Clough made sure he screwed as much as he could get, but to do that to Jimmy was utterly despicable of him. Great manager, human low life.
Cloughies achievements are without doubt incredible, we need managers like this today but we’ll never see it! Anyway, players are far too mardy today and would spit their dummy out at the first bollocking.
Pep would need to take Plymouth Argyle or Preston or Portsmouth to the Prem in his first season, win the thing... then win two back to back Champions leagues to match Clough and Taylor... Nobody is that good.
Clough was brilliant at two regional football clubs. He developed players on the way up and revitalised players who were supposedly on their way out. International football was different and footballers at the top of their game would not have taken too kindly to the Clough management style. It did not work at Leeds and don’t think it would have worked for England. Hey just my opinion. To my mind the best England manager who was let down by his players was Venebles. Venebles was great and his England team really should have won Euro 96.
Brian Clough was self aware enough to know why he didn't get the England job - “The FA were frightened of me. That’s why I wasn’t England manager. They were right. “They thought I was going to take over the Football Association. And they were right. I hadn’t matured enough to play the politics and get the England manager’s job. I was what I was. I didn’t change”.
When I was about 15 years old, I went to watch a cricket match at Trent Bridge with a few mates, circa 1978/1979? Being football fans too & Forest enjoying a purple patch, during the lunch break, two of us decided to go & look round the City Ground. We'd not been on the car park two minutes when this bloke came strutting towards us, he was muttering loudly & didn't look too happy. As it was out of season, we both thought it was the caretaker or someone like that. As he got closer, we realised it was Cloughie! - He asked us a few questions like "what d'ya think you two ruffians are doing in my car park", type of stuff. Then he gave us a Forest programme each & signed them for us, "Be Good, Brian Clough". It's still in the attic somewhere. Can you imagine today's football managers monitoring the riff-raff on the club car park..??!! 😂😂 Absolute Legend.
I believe that Brian Clough Is the ONLY manager in ANY major footballing country, to take 2 (not 1 but 2) largely provincial clubs (Derby and Nottingham Forest) who had never really done anything, from the bottom of division 2 ( The Championship for you youngsters) to the Division 1 (Premier League) Title in less than 3 years (Twice) OH and then win the European Cup (Champions League, back to back with one of them and get the the Semi Final with the other one) . I am sorry, but Pep, Ferguson, Paisley, Shankley, Mourinho , Ancelotti, Zidane, Klopp etc etc. First of all have never done anything without managing the biggest or richest club in their respective league at the time, Let alone manage to lower league club to those heights (Twice) Clough is simply the best manager of all time

I believe England would have won the world cup with Brian Clough as manager, he made players play above themselves
As a Scotsman, I would back that 100% He would have taken England on a really successful run, just like Spain did around 2010 He and Peter Taylor were simply formidable May their memories live on forever
probably wouldnt have won anything but he would have got the best out of the players.
Yes, Simon - everyone, find the interviews with Clough & Revie, Motson etc!!!!!
Brian was absolutely fantastic! I wonder what he would have to say about the football now...
I think we all know what he would say 😂!!!
@exactsame very true yes ! Haha 😄
Best manager ever! What he did taking Derby and Forest out of Division 2 and then on to League titles, European cups and other trophies will never be repeated
@@gibson617ajg The total squad in 2015/16 cost around 20 million quid. Vardy £1m, Kante £5m, Mahrez £400k, Albrighton free transfer. 13 years after administration.
Winning the league was remarkable, but I'll never forget the MON years down at Filbert Street.
The characters we had in that team were fantastic.
@@andreashessler838 Same here. If our current lot showed half the passion and commitment we would survive this season without a shadow of doubt.
Agreed. What Leicester did was special because the money that's in the game now. The Forest achievement is better because they did it twice.
Oneil talking like this totally shuts the other pair up because they have no comeback love it
Years ago my dad always said Brian Clough would never be England manager because they always put Mr. Nice Guy "yes men" types in as manager, but England would have won a few World Cups if he was in charge.
All the struggles England have today to appoint a top manager yet somehow one of the best ever English managers, who actually wanted the job, was overlooked 🤔
Typical English fa
What a player O’Neil was that 42 unbeaten record went on my birthday at Liverpool was at the game in the Kop but honestly what a team they had then.9th December 👍
Love him followed him at any club he was at
Amazing to think that someone like clough never managed england but southgate and now carsley can......this is why we will never win a major tournament again.
One of the greatest managers of all time
I’d love to see his character knock these modern players down a peg or 2. Magic man !
Absolutely brilliant. And so is Nigel, up the Rovers!
Best manager of all time by along stretch from a west ham fan rip brian
I support LFC,Brian Clough is the best british manager ever,Why? He won the League title with two different clubs, Derby and Forest, look at the two of them since he left them, both still struggling.
Had he stayed at Leeds they would have been his Treble.
@lezley-q4r-well said bud, Also won two European cup's with Nottingham Forest 78/79 -79/80. Y.n.w.a
Myself and my Dad had been to watch Derby, it was a very wet day and we were waiting for the rain to stop after the game to walk home.
Taylor…. Never enough mentions and the drink got most decent people years ago 😢
Fantastic stuff. Fascinating
For me, Brian Clough was the greatest manager in the English game ever. If he had become England manager, never mind qualifying for World Cup finals, England would have been winning the thing.
Amazing conversation.
the linesman is havin a better game than you !🤣
Clough was a leading figure in a football age full of characters
Look up Craig Bromfield, now that's an amazing Brian Clough story. 👏
A great trio on the show.
Mark crossley tells the best clough stories
The Pearce and Iron story deserves it's own honour..soooooooo funny
Shithouse …..!! 😂
@@jonathanhill7555 🤣🤣
Haha, now then shithouse…..
It’s all in the voice.
a mate of mine says he once heard Clough say that if he was ever England manager, he'd pick his starting XI all from non-league teams.
Who is the interviewr on the left, please?
Brian Clough was a genius, the old school ties at the FA weren’t brave enough to appoint the greatest manager around. They appointed yes men. He’ll never be forgotten. I miss him still.
Absolutely excellent ❤❤
The best manager and the best team of him and Peter Taylor that ever was and this is coming from a Wolves fan.
Wonderful.
Dear me, Jim never wastes an opportunity to name-drop ... Again and again and again
Amazing
He was a socialist, because he knew everyone deserves a chance to be their best.
I’m glad Jim let us know it was years ago when he interviewed Clough

The greatest. There's nothing else to say.
Lookout! Rashford might run you down in his white Rolls-Royce.
"Bugger! Another dent."
Madame sooooo proud to be Forest fan.
First of all have never done anything without managing the biggest or richest club in their respective league at the time, Let alone manage to lower league club to those heights (Twice) Clough is simply the best manager of all time
Wolves born and bred, but there has been no greater loss to football management than Clough. Legend.
