Cloughie is a legend in the city I come from, but I can totally see why it didn't work out for him at Leeds. He was an extremely unique personality, Derby and later Forest were unfancied clubs willing to do things exactly as he wanted them, these players were already proven winners under Don Revie.
As a Leeds fan, the other big issue Cloughie had was he didn't have Peter Taylor alongside him at ER. As the latter half of his stint at Forest proved after he had fallen out with Peter Taylor he was as useful as he was at Leeds. As good as he was, he was nothing without Peter Taylor.
Thankfully Johnny Giles did come to West Brom and he took us back to the top division. He was a great player yes he was tough but he was also a midfield maestro IMO. Thank you Johnny Giles boing boing you are always welcome at The Hawthorns 👍
History shows that Clough was a good manager that is without question, but you have to ask what on earth was the chairman thinking about when he appointed a man who had spouted so much vitriol against the club, it was never going to work in a million years. He should have taken the advise of Revie and given Giles the job. Look at the succession through the ranks at Liverpool after Shankly left.

That's an insight into part of the internal strife of the club of which Brian Clough was not a party to. That Leeds team were growing older yet most of those players didn't want to face up to that. All most of them had known within their playing careers was Revie's style of management hence the reluctance to take on or adapt to a different system. To come in and settle down all that angst and rancour was a feat of man management by Jimmy Armfield as proved by reaching the European Cup Final in 1975.

Those of us who saw these players play on muddy pitches will never forget them they were all brilliant and we could name every team back then, unlike today as there were 11 on the pitch and 1 sub. Johnny was a fantastic player would be worth 200 million today and I am a life long Arsenal fan. I even ended up working in the game doing sports psychology.
Clough , genius as he was , suffered hubris big time at Leeds. You tread carefully when you pull people down, even if your intention is to wipe the slate clean and build up again. He failed spectacularly there.
David . On the face of it Yes you could say that . However I look at it differently . IF the Leeds players had of swallowed their pride and forgotten about their massive egos for a while and acted professionally and just rode out the storm and did what Clough told them to do then I have no doubt that he would have turned things around and turned Leeds into an even greater side eventually . But these things take time in football and due to the players he wasn’t given that time was he? 44 days or whatever it was is not enough time to prove your worth as a manager. They could have sacked Alex Ferguson after 44 days as he wasn’t doing very well at all at Man Utd after that time period and there were calls for him to go during that short time , I remember well . Also they could have sacked Alf Ramsey after a month or so because people at the time didn’t like or agree how he was changing the way England played . This is Not Right , the press were saying at the time . Then again Forest could have sacked Clough again after 44 days as there were problems initially there too. And if these 3 managers had of been sacked after that short time then all of us would have said , Oh Ferguson failed at Man U didn’t he and Ramsey was a failure at England and Clough has failed again at Forest. And yet look at the results of having faith in them and leaving them alone for a number of years to get on with their jobs . They all succeeded BIG TIME and went on to achieve incredible GLORY with their teams . I feel certain that Clough would have done the same at Leeds IF he had of been given a lot longer than 44 days to work with . It’s not his fault or failure that the players , fans and board of directors didn’t have faith in him and couldn’t see past their noses . They were mugs in my opinion and lost out on the chance of future unparalleled success . It’s not often a GREAT manager like Clough comes along to take over your team . When they do , you put up with the crap and hardships for a while and just wait for the success and glory to come . Leeds missed out big time and instead of the chance of becoming even greater they just preferred to relive past glories . A SAD day for them when they sacked Clough but a GREAT day for Nottingham Forest .

@@martinputt6421 OG 97 is right if a little harsh. Clough & Taylor needed each other. If Taylor had gone to Leeds with Clough it would have been a different story. Together they were brilliant, apart they never hit the same heights. Read Peter Taylor’s book if you get a chance. It’s very enlightening about the whole saga.

Don’t think Clough would have done any better for England than he did for Leeds. What he and peter Taylor did superbly was to build teams from scratch with players he knew would be exactly right for the team and that he would be able to get the best out of them. England team is, by definition, full of big egos!

The problem was Clough only knew how to build great teams in his own image from the ground up. Leeds was a different animal, they were already successful under someone else.

If Juventus win the Italian League, and AC & Inter Milan finish 2nd and 3rd, they go into the UEFA Cup. Are they not strong teams? I could go on and on. The following season, these teams, or one of them, would often win their respective leagues and qualify for the European Cup, and one of them would lift the UEFA Cup. It was a strong competition with often stronger teams than the European Cup, and more of them. Anyone who won it was a damn good team and the Super Cup should really have been played between the European Cup winners and the UEFA Cup winners.

Revie, great manager. Clough, great manager. Interesting noting that Clough's Derby vs Revie's Leeds saw them play 12 times, Leeds/Revie winning 10 of those. Search for the Clough meets Revie video and Clough refers to Revie being the one to aspire to. Leeds were tough, dirty yes, but that was football of that age, it was fight or flight. There's enough footage going around to show that Leeds played some breathtaking football and how the best football minds of that time said they were one of the best, if not the best English club side up until that point. Why not appreciate two great characters of the game who achieved remarkable success with their sides. RIP to both.
Stats don't always tell the full story. During the Cloughie/Revie wars, Leeds always had the upper hand over Derby. At the time, Leeds was an established top-flight side, with experienced seasoned internationals, trophy winners and European football experienced players, whereas, Derby was up and coming, newly promoted from the second tier of English football (old 2nd Division), which takes time to adjust to top-flight football. So you would expect Leeds to win the majority of their games against Derby. Whether you like them or not, they both left a big mark on British football.
@@Aerojet01 Sorry, I don't agree when you say it takes time to adjust from 2nd Division to First. Leeds got promoted in the 63/64 season. Next season they came 2nd to Man Utd on the old goal average system and reached the FA Cup Final losing 2-1 to Liverpool. They won promotion again in 1990, finished 4th the following season and won the last First Division 1 title the season after.

He was born in Ireland and considered himself Irish. He played for the IFA team that used to represent the whole country. Was he expected not to play for them and play for the FAI team? Hear Hear! Roy Keane, a very talented young player came to Forest, Cloughie described him as "My Lucky Break" and he did try and was focused. One occasion he wasn't switched on, Cloughie punched Keane (the rumours were he knocked Keane out but that maybe exaggerated) when he made a costly mistake. Keane learned from it and there were no hard feelings.
If Clough had of been able to get his way at Leeds they would have went on to win European cups and league titles. They were a big club as well and would have been able to hang onto players which cloughed struggled with at Forest. If only Leeds had a little bit of vision.
He got transferred because he fired back. Busby liked yes men. Got rid of people who survived Munich on a whim. Revie didn't mind that type. Knew he was good.
Man Utd's squad before the crash was immense so much that the reserves consisted of internationals, the third teams had Giles, stiles coming through, couple all this with Law who was already on the radar and later George Best, i doubt in history of any football club having a better squad, but for the crash it would've been interesting who would've stayed/left..
Taylor didnt want to go he quite fancied a crack at being a manager but Clough was later generous enough to say had Taylor gone to Leeds with him, He (Clough) may not have made the mistakes he made
There is a lot of hate towards that Leeds team of that era. Well I watched them and remember them as one of the great teams. Them and Liverpool were consistently the top 2 teams. Derby, Forest, Arsenal and Everton had their moments but not the consistency. Yes Leeds were hard but they had great players even on the subs bench. Whoever had an easy game against Leeds? I am a Newcastle fan and even at our best we were a class below Leeds. The surprise to me growing up in that era was that it all fell apart for Leeds unlike Liverpool who have always been near or at the top.

For a ten year period Leeds never finished lower than fourth and played in around fifteen semi finals and finals with virtually the same playing staff Clough's teams came no where near that Leeds were better and far more dominant setting several records in the process.

For any manager to be successful, they have to work in their own unique way. That means working to particular systems, using particular types of players. And that means getting rid of players who don’t suit your way of working, and replacing them as quickly as possible with those that do. Clough used a lot of psychology to get players to work for him, or to get them to move on quickly.

Leeds United were actually regarded as a dirty team in the early 70s. And they inspired their fans. I remember in junior school games lessons. We would be having a game of football and anyone in a white shirt with a yellow trim would always go into tackles heavily. Always big rough lads with more aggression than skill. And this was 8, 9 and 10 year olds! The 70s eh?
My dad was a Leeds fan. He encouraged that philosophy of which you speak. My first proper game 9 years old 1976 , sent off in the ninth minute . Never forgot the old boys attempt at consoling me. Imagine if Giles had succeeded Revie and there was immediate continuity, without the disruption from Clough. Yes they were an ageing team, but things might have pushed on with fresh signings and carrying on in the "Leeds" way - building strength from within.

I've had the privilege to see the best club side this country has ever seen put todays Man City up against Revie's Leeds there's only going to be one out come a Man City defeat.

Clough was right . That team had all the skill in the world but were more interested in showing how tough they were. They won a lot under Revie but they came second a lot too. Clough should have kept quiet and slowly made them play more expansive football. Clough keeping quiet was never going to happen.
To be honest, the title win of 1973-74 and the European Cup Final of 1975 would be Leeds last great harrah. Their league positions in the following years would support this analysis... 9th, 5th, 10th, 9th, 5th, 11th, 9th, 20th (R), -, they would then disappear into the bowels of the second tier for 9 years. In the FA Cup since losing to Sunderland in 1973, Leeds best achievement was reaching a semi-final against Coventry City in 1987...
Your comment is spot on.The ironic thing about the post 75 decline was the fact the REALLY GREAT players were on the whole replaced by more than half decent players, Currie, Hankin, Mckenzie, Flynn, Hankin. Mcqueen and Jordan were already there so the club should have done better from75 onwards

I am 64 and Leeds were without doubt the dirtiest team ever to win the league and they barred their GK Sprake from the ground for blowing the whistle on Revie bribing other teams. That is the reason Revie left the England job under a cloud as the story was going to break. When i lived in Winchmore Hill an ex player at the time confirmed this to me in private.
My mate's sister's boyfriend's uncle had a pub in Leeds and a bloke came in and told him in confidence that his brother-in-law had it on good authority that the ex-player was less than reliable.

Shows that all of us have successes and failures in life. Clough got it wrong at Leeds. It was also the wrong decision to take the job in the first place! A great manager.. but a mortal man!
7 weeks wasn't enough and isn't enough in any job. What Clough did and how he did it was besides the point. The point is had he been given long enough Clough would have made leeds in his own image not Revie's Ex and they would have been European champions. They needed to be told to raise their game, that they weren't good enough a year later. Harsh but true. He also wanted a few of them gone so he could replace them. Leeds' loss Forest's gain.
Creating a huge rift with the players immediately can hardly be described as great management. He wasn’t forced to make a mess of the situation, and given they had just won the league, they were hardly a washed up team.
He was a small & hugely skillful player at a time in English Football where guys like that were mercilessly preyed upon week in, week out & offered little or no protection by match officials. One bad tackle & your career could be finished. He and others like him quickly came to the realisation that being perceived as a guy who'd take no nonsense from the likes of Chopper Harris, Peter Osgood or Peter Storey was the only way to preserve your physical and mental integrity. As Giles has always professed, great players have the moral courage to never hide from the ball - get on it, impose your game, don't be cowed or intimidated & have confidence in your skills to deliver for the team. He was no angel, but boy could that guy play. Just felt the discussion needed a bit of context by the way.
Well yes, I agree he was a superb player but he had a nasty streak that you chose to leave out. I was spoilt though, having supported West Ham where Brooking for some reason never 'left the foot in' or used his studs. There was something nastier than you are prepared to grant and yours is special pleading really i.e. you'd not be judging him thus if he were not a Leeds player I think. But his passing was as good as Hoddle's - he governed the midfield better though, a general - and he was part of an unlikeable but very impressive Leeds side. I still recall that 1971 Cup final replay with Chelsea. Blimey! Best wishes Gary P.S. From what i read about clough, he was a manager who rather build up a team than take up a ready team. I believe jurgen klopp represents his style today.
Big difference between taking over for Don Revie compared to Brendan Rodgers. Clough was destined to fail at Leeds albeit the players were to blame to a great degree.

I say this, although I am not a leeds or notts forest fan ... the players got rid of clough by not playing for him. Leeds reached the 1975 European Cup Final and lost then got relageted in the early 1980s So what happened to Brian Clough ... he took over a lowley east midlands second division club, won the second division. In the first year in the first division, they The League Championship! In 1978 they knocked out Liverpool (The twice consecutive European Champions) and went on to win The European Cupin79-80 one after the other just like Liverpool ... Cloughie/ Taylor did it with 2 non fashionable teams - far outweighs what revie ever did. Cloughie/ Taylor were fantastic. Although Leeds team was great there’s no getting away from that. Few yrs after this Revie was sacked and cloughie/ Taylor European champions- that’s football. Big rams fan but sadly Revie passed away much too soon.

History shows that Clough was a good manager that is without question, but you have to ask what on earth was the chairman thinking about when he appointed a man who had spouted so much vitriol against the club, it was never going to work in a million years. He should have taken the advise of Revie and given Giles the job. Look at the succession through the ranks at Liverpool after Shankly left.

That's an insight into part of the internal strife of the club of which Brian Clough was not a party to. That Leeds team were growing older yet most of those players didn't want to face up to that. All most of them had known within their playing careers was Revie's style of management hence the reluctance to take on or adapt to a different system. To come in and settle down all that angst and rancour was a feat of man management by Jimmy Armfield as proved by reaching the European Cup Final in 1975.

Those of us who saw these players play on muddy pitches will never forget them they were all brilliant and we could name every team back then, unlike today as there were 11 on the pitch and 1 sub. Johnny was a fantastic player would be worth 200 million today and I am a life long Arsenal fan. I even ended up working in the game doing sports psychology.

Clough , genius as he was , suffered hubris big time at Leeds. You tread carefully when you pull people down, even if your intention is to wipe the slate clean and build up again. He failed spectacularly there.
David . On the face of it Yes you could say that . However I look at it differently . IF the Leeds players had of swallowed their pride and forgotten about their massive egos for a while and acted professionally and just rode out the storm and did what Clough told them to do then I have no doubt that he would have turned things around and turned Leeds into an even greater side eventually . But these things take time in football and due to the players he wasn’t given that time was he? 44 days or whatever it was is not enough time to prove your worth as a manager. They could have sacked Alex Ferguson after 44 days as he wasn’t doing very well at all at Man Utd after that time period and there were calls for him to go during that short time , I remember well . Also they could have sacked Alf Ramsey after a month or so because people at the time didn’t like or agree how he was changing the way England played . This is Not Right , the press were saying at the time . Then again Forest could have sacked Clough again after 44 days as there were problems initially there too. And if these 3 managers had of been sacked after that short time then all of us would have said , Oh Ferguson failed at Man U didn’t he and Ramsey was a failure at England and Clough has failed again at Forest. And yet look at the results of having faith in them and leaving them alone for a number of years to get on with their jobs . They all succeeded BIG TIME and went on to achieve incredible GLORY with their teams . I feel certain that Clough would have done the same at Leeds IF he had of been given a lot longer than 44 days to work with . It’s not his fault or failure that the players , fans and board of directors didn’t have faith in him and couldn’t see past their noses . They were mugs in my opinion and lost out on the chance of future unparalleled success . It’s not often a GREAT manager like Clough comes along to take over your team . When they do , you put up with the crap and hardships for a while and just wait for the success and glory to come . Leeds missed out big time and instead of the chance of becoming even greater they just preferred to relive past glories . A SAD day for them when they sacked Clough but a GREAT day for Nottingham Forest .

What he and peter Taylor did superbly was to build teams from scratch with players he knew would be exactly right for the team and that he would be able to get the best out of them. Revie, great manager. Clough, great manager. Interesting noting that Clough's Derby vs Revie's Leeds saw them play 12 times, Leeds/Revie winning 10 of those. Search for the Clough meets Revie video and Clough refers to Revie being the one to aspire to. Leeds were tough, dirty yes, but that was football of that age, it was fight or flight. There's enough footage going around to show that Leeds played some breathtaking football and how the best football minds of that time said they were one of the best, if not the best English club side up until that point.
Why not appreciate two great characters of the game who achieved remarkable success with their sides. RIP to both.
The game was a lot different in that era - Revie-style would be dominant during that period but agree both great managers
Stats don't always tell the full story. During the Cloughie/Revie wars, Leeds always had the upper hand over Derby. At the time, Leeds was an established top-flight side, with experienced seasoned internationals, trophy winners and European football experienced players, whereas, Derby was up and coming, newly promoted from the second tier of English football (old 2nd Division), which takes time to adjust to top-flight football. So you would expect Leeds to win the majority of their games against Derby. Whether you like them or not, they both left a big mark on British football.
@@Aerojet01 Sorry, I don't agree when you say it takes time to adjust from 2nd Division to First. Leeds got promoted in the 63/64 season. Next season they came 2nd to Man Utd on the old goal average system and reached the FA Cup Final losing 2-1 to Liverpool. They won promotion again in 1990, finished 4th the following season and won the last First Division 1 title the season after.

He was born in Ireland and considered himself Irish. He played for the IFA team that used to represent the whole country. Was he expected not to play for them and play for the FAI team? Hear Hear! Roy Keane, a very talented young player came to Forest, Cloughie described him as "My Lucky Break" and he did try and was focused. One occasion he wasn't switched on, Cloughie punched Keane (the rumours were he knocked Keane out but that maybe exaggerated) when he made a costly mistake. Keane learned from it and there were no hard feelings.

I just started watching man Utd just before Giles left .he was the type of player I liked who got stuck in.
He got transferred because he fired back. Busby liked yes men. Got rid of people who survived Munich on a whim. Revie didn't mind that type. Knew he was good.
Man Utd's squad before the crash was immense so much that the reserves consisted of internationals, the third teams had Giles, stiles coming through, couple all this with Law who was already on the radar and later George Best, i doubt in history of any football club having a better squad, but for the crash it would've been interesting who would've stayed/left..

There is a lot of hate towards that Leeds team of that era. Well I watched them and remember them as one of the great teams. Them and Liverpool were consistently the top 2 teams. Derby, Forest, Arsenal and Everton had their moments but not the consistency. Yes Leeds were hard but they had great players even on the subs bench. Whoever had an easy game against Leeds? I am a Newcastle fan and even at our best we were a class below Leeds. The surprise to me growing up in that era was that it all fell apart for Leeds unlike Liverpool who have always been near or at the top.

For any manager to be successful, they have to work in their own unique way. That means working to particular systems, using particular types of players. And that means getting rid of players who don’t suit your way of working, and replacing them as quickly as possible with those that do. Clough used a lot of psychology to get players to work for him, or to get them to move on quickly.

Leeds United were actually regarded as a dirty team in the early 70s. And they inspired their fans. I remember in junior school games lessons. We would be having a game of football and anyone in a white shirt with a yellow trim would always go into tackles heavily. Always big rough lads with more aggression than skill. And this was 8, 9 and 10 year olds! The 70s eh?

Imagine if Giles had succeeded Revie and there was immediate continuity, without the disruption from Clough. Yes they were an ageing team, but things might have pushed on with fresh signings and carrying on in the "Leeds" way - building strength from within.

Clough was right . That team had all the skill in the world but were more interested in showing how tough they were. They won a lot under Revie but they came second a lot too. Clough should have kept quiet and slowly made them play more expansive football. Clough keeping quiet was never going to happen.
To be honest, the title win of 1973-74 and the European Cup Final of 1975 would be Leeds last great harrah. I am 64 and Leeds were without doubt the dirtiest team ever to win the league and they barred their GK Sprake from the ground for blowing the whistle on Revie bribing other teams. That is the reason Revie left the England job under a cloud as the story was going to break. When i lived in Winchmore Hill an ex player at the time confirmed this to me in private.
My mate's sister's boyfriend's uncle had a pub in Leeds and a bloke came in and told him in confidence that his brother-in-law had it on good authority that the ex-player was less than reliable.

Shows that all of us have successes and failures in life. Clough got it wrong at Leeds. It was also the wrong decision to take the job in the first place! A great manager.. but a mortal man!
7 weeks wasn't enough and isn't enough in any job. What Clough did and how he did it was besides the point. The point is had he been given long enough Clough would have made leeds in his own image not Revie's Ex and they would have been European champions. They needed to be told to raise their game, that they weren't good enough a year later. Harsh but true. He also wanted a few of them gone so he could replace them. Leeds' loss Forest's gain.
Creating a huge rift with the players immediately can hardly be described as great management. He wasn’t forced to make a mess of the situation, and given they had just won the league, they were hardly a washed up team.

He was a small & hugely skillful player at a time in English Football where guys like that were mercilessly preyed upon week in, week out & offered little or no protection by match officials. One bad tackle & your career could be finished. He and others like him quickly came to the realisation that being perceived as a guy who'd take no nonsense from the likes of Chopper Harris, Peter Osgood or Peter Storey was the only way to preserve your physical and mental integrity. As Giles has always professed, great players have the moral courage to never hide from the ball - get on it, impose your game, don't be cowed or intimidated & have confidence in your skills to deliver for the team.

Well yes, I agree he was a superb player but he had a nasty streak that you chose to leave out. I was spoilt though, having supported West Ham where Brooking for some reason never 'left the foot in' or used his studs. There was something nastier than you are prepared to grant and yours is special pleading really i.e. you'd not be judging him thus if he were not a Leeds player I think. But his passing was as good as Hoddle's - he governed the midfield better though, a general - and he was part of an unlikeable but very impressive Leeds side. I still recall that 1971 Cup final replay with Chelsea. Blimey! Best wishes Gary P.S. From what i read about clough, he was a manager who rather build up a team than take up a ready team. I believe jurgen klopp represents his style today.
Big difference between taking over for Don Revie compared to Brendan Rodgers. Clough was destined to fail at Leeds albeit the players were to blame to a great degree.

I say this, although I am not a leeds or notts forest fan ... the players got rid of clough by not playing for him. Leeds reached the 1975 European Cup Final and lost then got relageted in the early 1980s
So what happened to Brian Clough ... he took over a lowley east midlands second division club, won the second division. In the first year in the first division, they The League Championship! In 1978 they knocked out Liverpool (The twice consecutive European Champions) and went on to win The European Cupin79-80 one after the other just like Liverpool ...
