2008 Mazdaspeed3 Review, Walkaround, Exhaust & Test Drive

- Mazda's first entry into the hot-hatch market was a strong competitor. It achieved the horsepower bragging rights and instantly became one of the quickest FWD sport compacts on the market. Just be sure you can live with the rather harsh ride, sub-par fuel economy, and general lack of refinement.

haha he doesnt like the aftermarket evo wheels... which are probably the most sought after wheels in the mazdaspeed community!!
It looks a lot nicer when the car is lowered too. This one in the video is riding on stock suspension
I want them on my speed6 so badly
I think they look amazing
It looks ugly
How dare he insult the glorious evo X wheels. It took me 8 months of searching to get someone to part with a set. Lol perfect combo
+N Lanham i think those wheels are sexy and a great improvement over the factory.
N Lanham Smh it took me a whole year lmaoo
I’m still looking for a set 😂
I know nothing of these wheels but i was also surprised, they fit the car and give it a clean look.
I have the EVO7 tarmac spec, 17x8....would it look good in a Gen2 MPS?
I taught my girlfriend to drive manual in our ‘09 MS3. She cried a lot.
Now she kills it.
"Difficult to drive smoothly"
*Shifts at like 1.5k*
Geoffrey Baudin I own a Speed6 and these cars aren’t the easiest cars to drive smoothly, compared to even the old b5 a4 2.8 5 speed I used to have
hahahahaha
I own a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 and he was a little over dramatic with the clutch it’s not too bad
I've driven many manual cars, and I'll have to say my Speed6's clutch is definitely the most finicky out of all of them. But if you drive it enough, you can get used to it.
@@theanti-come so true, I used to daily mine and had it down but when I don't for a couple weeks you can be a little rough at first, definitely gotta let it warm up before banging gears
It's actually impressive how he manages to always sound negative in every review
There is no blowoff valve that a bypass valve they're different
Why the hell is this guy reviewing this car...this guy is obviously into luxury and not performance. He complained way to much in my opinion :/
Lol this is how he always reviews
I know what u mean but it hes just being honest and despite the fact that he complained about it he still likes the car and definitely gets why people like them.
i thought so too this car is my baby, although i have the less powerful DOHC 2000cc engine ,same interior same looks and its really fun to drive wonder how fast this turbo charged manual be like, would love to upgrade some day but overall its a car that is easily lovable
I think the wheels are nice!
The first gen was literally a wolf in sheep's clothing
No, it literally was not. I don't think you know what that word means.
seriouscatisserious More like phrase rather than word
@@seriouscatisserious i think you need to re-learn the definition of what a word is
Yes! i just bought an 08 mazda 3 hatch, its not the speed version but it was my first manual car to learn on it, and it is very forgiving :)
Brutal. It has a factory bypass valve, no blow off valve. That sound you're hearing is intake noise because there is a aftermarket short ram intake. Do the research or stop selling cars lol. Also sounds like the timing chain and tensioner need to replaced at the very least on that engine.
VVT needs to be done it sounds like
you really do give a great review. if we want to see what a car can "do" we can look at spec, track time or standard reviews. this kind of review of great to fill in what nobody else shows and that is what its like to live with because, hey, lets be honest, most of us drive only one car...a daily driver, so these things are important.
keep doing the videos like this. this style is awesome
I have a 2012 speed 3 and the clutch is perfect. I have driven many manual cars and none of them had a trans or clutch like this car. The clutch is really light in comparison to other performance cars. And the trans is super smooth it slides in and out of gear very quick and very smooth.
Love the mazda hatchbacks! Excellent video!
We actually like the stock wheels for this generation. Our favorite design for a speed3 can be found on the 2013 model.
He just knocked it for every little thing that wasn’t maybach quality yet it’s hands down the best hot hatch of its era
Lmao. No
I just got a 08 very clean, i don't no why people complain about torque steer is your tcs on ? To take off quick you just get some power from 1st and 2nd then hit third hard. And the ride i think is fine not stiff just not a corolla. I love the sport compact car look with some power and this car fits the bill with out the bs.
honestly, wouldnt be surprised if they kept the sunroof out of the picture to help the chassis rigidity. that torque steer and wheel hop is usually pretty crazy as is lol
I like all the videos you do...
I like this vid. Thanks for upload
these reviews are so much better than your more 'professional' ones. just my opinion but goodjob with both types.
I have this car, and LOVE it!
I own a 2009 Mazdaspeed3 GT with the tech pkg, its pretty obvious the car was modified... Hence the short ram intake, and the blow off sound (bov) the reviewer speaks about (you hear nothing from stock bpv). That shifter clanking sound IS NOT normal, probably something is/was loose. As far as clutch feel... Not very forgiving in 1st and sometimes 2nd but really not a big deal, if you think about it, you purchased a "sports compact" with some grunt and it should have the parts to withstand that grunt.
The shifter does leave a feel to be desired and in my case on some spirited driving have messed up some timely shifts (not a big deal though for your every day commuter driver). For a first time manual driver be prepared to be annoyed for the first few weeks learning the clutch and gas pedal balance, the clutch engagement is quick and aggressive and the gas pedal is very light meaning if you don't watch your foot you'll be over revving before you completely engage the clutch, leading to accelerated clutch wear! (Cha-ching! Time for a new clutch... Lol)
The ride quality is what you would expect in a sports compact meant to be put thru it's paces... "Tight and bumpy", I feel like this thing rides on rails when it's taking fast turns, allot of fun and you feel secure and confident... even in wet conditions (Disclaimer: I Am Not promoting spirited or insane and unsafe driving, I am just expressing my experience).
The gas mileage is really good (I average 27.5mpg in Florida) considering it uses only premium gas and knowing what the car is capable of doing"while under boost" which kicks in at roughly above 2500rpm, then you experience the torque steer no big deal really just keep a good grip on the wheel with your left hand ( cuz you're not driving your grandmothers Buick! lol). I must also mention that I do not baby this car ALL the time, and I have no complaints with gas mileage. My best mpg this past summer with A/C operating was 29.4 mpg! About 375miles and not completely empty tank. (Of course not much spirited driving and this is combined city/hwy). ;-)
I forgot to mention about the tech pkg, the navigation system "imo" is horrible! your better off using your smart phone, and the Bose sound system will suffice unless you enjoy loud, hard and deep hitting base... Then you will probably be looking to add a subwoofer like I did. B-)
This is my experience with my MS3,I hope it can help a few with their purchasing decision :-)
NOVADOSED why is your review seem better than this guy's review??? I'm more convinced to buy a Mazdaspeed 3 of this generation as a first car and a first manual car. Thanks for the review
I'm looking for 1st gen Speed3! Thanks for the owner review
100000 times better review then this as guys video!!!
YES! MORE SPORTS CAR REVIEWS PLEASE!
Mazda Speed 3 is amazing! Japonese Cars Are Amazing!
japanese
Mazda is made by Ford, no longer Japanese
Jose Guerrero bruh ford does not own mazda😂
I learned stick in my 2012 MS3. It certainly was a challenge in the beginning.
I am honestly so close to getting this car. It'd be a great upgrade from my 97' Eclipse. Just need to research for any problems with these.
Do i change my mazda skyactiv 2012 for a mazdaspeed 3 2008?
awesome =] thanks for the feedback. definitely worth the subscribe
I'm thinking about getting an 07 mazdaspeed3 but idk im a first time buyer and i'll be learning how to drive a manual in this. Do you think it'll be okay for me?
I have a Gen1 myself. I love the car.
I love this car. Are u sure it is a normal noise the shifter made? Cause I have never heard that when I drove the car
The Mazdaspeed 3 is a little more difficult to drive than other stick shift cars, the engagement point is high and the clutch grabs aggressively. You'd be able to drive one, it would just be a bit more difficult to learn on
@William Brown really !? Was it easy i really want this as my first car but I'm nervous it's hard to learn manual on .
I drove one yesterday and i feel in love with it I want to get one but rn I cant😢
Its a great car hands down and I have a 04 3
lookin forward to the next speed 3
Completely random but I thought I recognized where you were driving haha good ole annandale
"I find the aftermarket wheels unsightly" LMAO nigga wut???
I have a 07 speed3 and its a different feeling from the normal mazda when it comes to the clutch. Ive driven both and I found the mazda 3 was very forgiving. But the speed is a different car. The clutch if im not mistaken, is a stage two clutch in the speed three which does take some practice. But much easier than a sti....
I drive an automatic car now. Is this a car that someone can learn and soon drive if they are a beginner to manual cars?
The torque is only limited from the factory in 1st and 2nd gear. Also that "whoosh" you are hearing when you get on the throttle is induction noise from the aftermarket SRI.
I have never ever seen this generation of Mazda3 with a nav system, my 07's manual has info on one but I cant find one with a nav anywhere.
Yes! Finally
Wheels have no impact on ride quality or turning radius. You have some strange opinions. Those are nice wheels btw
Nice choice with the CorkSport SRI.
Wouldn't want to call it "aftermarket wheels" they are Evo 10 wheels.
This review needs to be put to rest. You complained about the wheels so much, you have no idea what those wheels are or what you are driving, get out of the car and go back in to your Minivan please
*Helpful Comment, proceeded to Nearest Exit...
Just got an 08, havent got to drive it much, lots of rain. Its got a Cobb airintake, and a single exhaust(curious about the brand) Dealer didnt know anything about the mods. I love the car 2nd day ive owned it. Really looking forward to investigating its nuances. Clutch is very tricky so far, hope I get it
Ok it seems the 07, 08's were not dual exhaust. There is a down pipe hindering air flow, that that should be the first mod says u gain ton's more boost. Anybody smart with this shit? any in put is appreciated
This car is just a speed demon raw and in your face and thats why people love it.
I kind of agree with you. I'd prefer some five spokes rather than those 12s. The less, the better IMO (even though threes are ugly). Good video!
I had this car as my first car. I love the sht out of it
Im trying to buy a speed 6, mainly because of the awd problem is they are hard to find in my area so im considering a speed 3. How does the three do in snow?
Ben C the speed3’s spin a lot in the snow due to the really brutal low end torque you gotta baby them, by wife’s old boss had one. I got a Speed6 and it does very good in the snow
Unless the previous owner put a blow off valve on(BOV) it should still be a BPV, aka bypass valve. There is a huge difference. BOVs release air into the atmosphere, where as the BPV releases the air back into the intake. You would hear a loud pressure release everytime you let go of the gas pedal if it was a BOV.
i know its been 10 years but you can hear the bypass valve on these with a pod filter intake which this one has
Great Review!!!!! Zoom Zoom!!
those "aftermarket" wheels are actually OEM Evo X wheels...
I want one of these, but the no sunroof really threw me off. If you want a sunroof and a ‘speed 3, just get a regular 3, fit a turbo on it and you’ve gat a Mazdaspeed 3 with a sunroof. That’s all a Mazdaspeed 3 is; a Mazda 3 with a turbo
Awesome
What wheels are those?
Yea that car definitely has something wrong with the shifter, mine has never sounded like that. You're right though, the shifter is definitely one of the car's biggest weaknesses.
that's my car. i bought it from Jerrys ford in VA. the rear shocks where blown and shifter plate was loose, i see why. the fogs are also stock yellow on GT MS3
04WRX88 Still have it? How did it hold-up?
The speed3's clutch is very light. I find it even lighter than a TSX.
Pls do rsx type s review. Thanks.
Did anybody else notice the 300zx in the parking lot at 5:20??? Holy shit
Finally frequent updloads
I'm bothered to why that stock intercooler doesn't have the stock shroud around it.
Adam Johnson I know right, the shroud meets up with some duct work for the hood bulge that forces colder air directly onto the intercooler
Can we get an sti next?
yeah...the clutch on the speed3 make it difficult to learn...ive own a 2013 for almost a year now and i still cant take off smoothly every time, i have no problem taking off smoothly in my friend's evo tho.
Just keep your foot a little bit longer on the clutch until you are completly rolling, it will be smooth (Y)
please do a 04-07 STI
R.I.P.
sofyan how is your car doing??
Can you try to do a 2008 Ford Taurus !!!!PLEASE!!!!
This dude must have never driven a turbo car before.
performance vehicles don't have sunroofs. If they do they compromise weight and rigidity. Just an FYI.
Wonder if he wants to review a speed 6
9:00 haha my dad taught me to drive a stick in this same car.
I like the first gen Mazda speed 3 :P
Been looking to buy one bit they all got 100000 miles on them do you think I should buy one
Don't pay a dime over like $7-8k and inspect thoroughly. Make sure it's been maintained, the timing belt has been done and also wouldn't be a bad idea to do a compression test on it, otherwise should be good to go
btw it has a corksport intake too.
I have a mazda 3 mps , and this little car is an animal, and realy pisses the boy races off, it looks like a normal car, this is a dark horse and realy goes some, but you need to handle it like a women, with a little bit of respect, if not you both end up in the ditch,
Those are the evo x gsr enkei wheels...
Something is wrong with that shiftier clank. I Own 1st gen 2008 speed and mine does not make that clunky sound. I love this car!
Are these reliable? Or is Mazda even reliable in general? I want a Toyota Camry v6 but this looks interesting
I had a base hatchback and it worked fine
Mazda's are reliable my Miata lasted 289K before i sold it with no issues.
Had my 2008 since 2008. Love it and had minimal issues. Extremely fun daily driver!
Good Review Of 2008 Mazdaspeed3. 😀
Sad to hear him say " the next gen mazda"(referring to 3rd gen) unknowingly that its discontinued.
Sad boi hours.
-sincerely speed3 owner
Surprising...
I like the review format. First person view better.
sounds like a rally car when you accelerate :D
hope that intercooler had its shroud on not off while driving........
We believe this car had an aftermarket shifter kit on it.
@ 2theRedlineLLC
Is this Automatic or Manual transmission?
Isn't this car supposed to have a hood scoop?
damn that shift is loud
Gahhh Im still debating weather to get the first Gen mazdaspeed3 or a second gen Infiniti FX (Wish I won the lottery so I could just get both xD)
Where is te aux ???
what type of rims are on that?
+Hunter Mckzari evo x rims
It a cute car i like
More Mazdas please! Perhaps the new 6?
tell em, Shin!
It's a track car! Why would it have a sun roof!!?
