    Meet the first model year of Mazda's rotary powered sports car, with a feathery curb weight, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, and RWD it was everything that a sports car should be. Unfortunately, it also had some of the compromises and quirks of your typical sports car.

    I had one of these back in the day. Was one of the most fun cars I have owned. It did get kinda crappy fuel mileage and burned oil but that goes with the territory when you get a rotary engine. I also did some minor upgrades, intake, exhaust, some tuning and I got it down into the low 5 second range to 60. Not a world beater but super fun to toss around curves. I'd have no problem picking a used one in good condition down the road to relive some fun memories.

      Do you have a Rotary? Have you owned an RX-8? Or are you just commenting from the curb? I have had two RX-8's with over 60k miles without any engine issues and one of them was an 04.

    I love my 2008 RX8. On the track, it's a fun car. Even while I daily drive it, it just feels special. I've seen and driven too many RX8s that are low on compression, need new plugs/coils, and generally piss poor maintenance to believe ANYONE'S bad opinion on the car. There are just too many in poor condition. I don't know if people just don't change their oil every 3-5k miles or neglecting to add oil, or just driving it aggressively when it's still warming up. All of those will eventually cause you to have a poor experience with the car. When REAL RX8 owners tell you it is maintenance, we're not kidding. Spark plugs for me, I change once a year. Coil Packs, I'd change them every two years, and an oil change every 3k miles. If you really do want an RX8, find a newer year model if possible. 2007-2011. Just listen to how it cranks upon start up, if it takes too long then it might just need a tune up or an engine; drive the car and see how the engine feels, it should have no hesitation, just a smooth delivery of power as the engine climbs up. It should feel quick! It should not feel slow (unless all you've ever driven are 300hp cars, then it's not going to feel all that quick). After it warms up, shut it off, wait a few seconds, then crank it. If it struggles to crank, might have problems. Bring the car to a rotary shop that can do a proper compression test. If you don't know of any, bring it to Mazda. You absolutely MUST HAVE a Mazda Rotary Compression Tool to measure the compression on this engine. It is not a piston engine, you cannot measure it properly with the usual gauge. If they tell you the compression is good or high, then consider purchasing the car. In all honesty, finding a perfectly running RX8 is probably the rarest thing in this time and age. Best of luck to any new owners. Keep revving current ones.

      The above is all true. It’s all about proper maintenance, which few owners followed, unfortunately. An RX-8 lovingly cared for by its one and original owner is the one worth finding!

      Always top it off when you reach one dot down on the dip stick, that is a half of a quart and like you said oil changes every 3K. The newest OEM coils revision C are much improved, even the B coils went 82k on my car. Like the Series 2 improvements.

      Get a Mustang Mach I if you can. Great Mustang, I know it is not a Terminator, but most people took really good care of them. All of the Cobras I have looked at have had issues because of half assed mods.

    • @javirt6749
      @javirt6749 8 років тому

      +Rick Goodwin i wouldnt go for a mustang for a couple of reason. First, the interior is very cheaply made. Expect a lot of rattling from all that ugly plastic on the interior. Second, unless you get the v6, the car was most likely driven hard by some young driver, and many have mods on them. I always recommend the same car to everyone and any car guy will agree with me, the best car for a new driver is by far the last gen acura integra. They are highly reliable (as expected from a 90's honda), very sporty (its considered the best handling fwd ever), and it gets good mpg. Best of all they are pretty cheap. I personally have a 2000 integra gs with over 200k and still running like new. The only downside with the car is that they are a hot target for thieves, but a good alarm system should help out massively.

    • @MountainMitchYT
      @MountainMitchYT 8 років тому

      victor james Thanks for the help, but I looked up the acura you recommended, personally I think they look like absolute trash. I love the styling on the mustang more, I could probably pimp out the interior, and trust me I will make sure I will get a mustang that was in good hands.

    I have a 2009 RX8 R3 which I have had for about year and it is so much fun to drive... Yes gas millage is crap.... I get around 22 to 23 mpg but you do not by this for the MPG... provided you keep on top of maintenance and all that really means is checking the oil which it burns as part of the engine process you will have no problems at all. It handles well beyond any other car I have driven and the sound of the rotary at 8 to 9K revs is magnificent.

    I test drove an RX-8 before and the clutch was vague-ish and stiff, even though it was a new clutch installed. Taking off and reverse was tricky because it was meticulous trying to feel the catch point and due to the fact it's been a while since I drove a manual in general. But other than that, it was amazing, shifting was smooth and short, the lovely Wankel rotary sound was loud and proud, and the handling had all kindz of grip. I wanted to test drive one to get a feel of how an RX-8 would drive because I want to get the R3 one day, but all RX-8s don't drive the same. The R3 may drive different from the one I drove and might be more/less better. Overall, I've enjoyed the experience of an RX-8 and with a refresh on the manual action, I'm thinking it would be a wonderful little sports car to have and drive on the weekends

    I drove a 10 year old 2004 model 75k miles stick shift yesterday and WOW! The acceleration and handling are phenomenal around LA's 2-lane on ramps around other cars. The clutch never died on me, but I had to release the clutch pretty high up before it caught into gear...so it took some getting used to because it's not my car.

    I have a few 1971-1973 Road Test magazines. You would be surprised how enthusiastic all the manufacturers were about rotary engines at the time. A rotary Pinto almost happened. I wonder if the bad owner experiences with the NSU RO80 rotary were what more or less spooked the entire industry out of making the Wankel engine. Mazda stayed loyal to the design. The torque numbers go up rapidly with a turbo and more rotors.

    It doesn't have a ''tendency'' to consume a lot of oil, it has a metering pump that injects oil based on rpm & load. Rotaries don't have blowby between chambers and the oil system, they have it between the chambers themselves. By the way, the early Rx-8s have issues with not injecting enough oil, so they wear very fast and need either a bit of premix and/or a reflash, at least MSP 13 from Mazda. Oil consumption should be around 0.5 L/1000km, the more the better.

    I own two rx7s. 1979 and a 1990 convertible. I love how they both drive. yes there's not alot of power buy these are some of the best handling cars for the money. you do not need to spend exotic car money to enjoy good handling and speed. my advice is to buy any of these rotaries with a good body. getting a rebuilt engine is easy to buy at Ur local Mazda dealer. or just rebuilding your numbers matching engine. my 79 I bought for 600 bucks. I do have a rebuilt engine in it already. my 90 is still original and with 179k and counting. so reliability has been good but I do stay on top of oil and it's maintenance. but the true reward is driving these cars. don't be afraid of them. and finding mods for them to make them faster and handle even better r readily available. like I said I prefer to buy one with a good body and than replace the motor if you have too. if not than u got a bonus.

    On the UK autotrader, the first full page is people selling their 8s for spare or repair. With a common trait, "non runner" or "won't start when warm". There has been an increase in companies that now focus all their business on 8s. Buying non-runners, rebuilding the engines & selling them on. Or just offering an engine rebuild, approx £2000, which today is the base price for a used one. Mazda charge £5000+ for a new engine & I'm not entirely sure they still offer this service.

    I drive one at the moment and you did a good job explaining the car. Totally agree with what u say. I do want to add one thing do, and thats that if the car starts bad when its hot, the odds are very high that it suffers from conpression loss. If that is true, it will cost you a rebuild and thats around 3500/4000 dollar. So if you are not sure about the way it starts or the power of it, do a proper compression test. Be aware: a regular compression test will not work.
    Second of all, make sure you have a garage that has experience with these engines, because a regular garage with no experience will f*ck it up!!!

  • @KJ-et2cg
    @KJ-et2cg 10 років тому +4

    I see a lot of "I want to buy this car" comments, many of whom are buying their first car. My advice: ENSURE you do your research before even test driving one, you can tell a lot by the way she starts up, drives, shuts down, then restarted whilst warm (IF she restarts). BOMBARD the seller with questions, it's not so easy to tell how previous owners have treated them. I've seen cases where the compression has been low, but the owner has thrown a new starter & sparks on her so it appears all is well to the buyer, for the apex seals to do one and before you've even got a taste of the 8, you're selling your car for spares or repair.

    • @ferengoid
      @ferengoid 9 років тому

      These engines are lousy for turbocharging. The excess heat is a real problem.
      I spoke with my local rotary specialist and he just shook his head and said 'don't do it'.
      If you want big horsepower don't get an RX-8, that's not what it's about. It's a great sports car just the way it is.
      For turbocharging you need to build the engine specifically, with lower compression. That will cost you a fortune, but it can be done. But you should avoid the temptation to slap on a turbo to a stock renesis engine!
      btw, just as a point of comparison I used GT5 to compare stock v8 M3 and RX-8. Just putting slicks on the RX-8 vs sports hard on the M3 I can get better laptimes on Laguna Seca. I haven't tried it on Tsukuba yet as I'm fooling around with GT6 (doing my licenses) but you get the point: the RX-8 is bloody quick on the track, because it weighs a lot less than many more powerful cars.
      For trackdays I use slicks plus competition brake pads. Lovely. :)

      Mark Ferris here its cclaases as a 2.6 which is wrong too. The ACTUAL displacement for the rx8 is 3924 as each rotor face is 654cc. 2 rotors x 3 rotor faces at 654cc is 3.924 ltr.

    there is another downside that didn't get mentioned. the renesis motor in the first gen rx-8's have a tendency to flood if shut off cold before hitting operating temperature. just be mindful to let the car heat up or high rev it a few times if you're taking a quick trip. other than that, i love mine.

    • @TamNgo84
      @TamNgo84 10 років тому

      Flooding rotary engines is a symptom of a poorly maintained ignition system. It is advisable NOT to shut it down when the engine is still warming up, but it really is symptoms of a bigger problem.

    Reading my comments, it would appear I'm biased against 8s. This is not the case in the slightest. I am currently in a situation where I MAY need a rebuild, which would not be the cheaper option, as I have recently lost my job, it is also the most unlikely option, but I know 100% in my heart that if it were entirely up to me, I would not be parting ways with her and would everything in ny power to make sure that she was not another statistic.

    my neighbor's RX-8 is about to go in for a second engine rebuild @ 110K. Cool car, unique, but needs a lot of help to stay driveable, unlike my S2000 which i only worry about where i park it, and feeding it a little oil every 1000miles.
    btw, drifting and handling "like on rails" in a lower-powered car are mutually exclusive.... it's all about grip vs. torque. A lower-powered car needs skinnier tires that grip LESS in order to drift at all (FR-S/RX8/S2K). A high-powered car just needs to find the right slip angle to break 'em loose, and the driver's skill to keep drifiting in oppo.

      @denisaljic 9 років тому

      shaft9000 yes the engines can go out if you don't treat them like your first born child. BUT when they do go out they are easier to replace and cost significantly less than any car I have ever worked on. To be honest a rx8 owner has to be insane to love their car and I do love my rx8 including the engine rebuilds that are inevitable and really make the relationship between car and driver that much more intimate.

    I literally own this car...mine has 44k, does drink a 1/2 quart of oil every three fill-ups. I get about 17 in town, but just 22/23hwy. I love it because I have to tinker a bit and it holds my two kids with no issues. Warming engine is crucial along with full oil changes...apex seals need to stay fresh. I'm wondering about the clutch comment...I love the shifting. Mazda had spec'd the car with 265hp but new EPA rules killed that so you get 238. 0-60? 6.3-6.5 easy

    The S is great, excellent handling good power and decent mpg. although it is uncomfortable on long trips due to the rough ride and loud noise (no sound insulation in cabin) it is really fun. Ive driven the rx8 extensively and it too has amazing handling the only problem is the power it feels a lot slower compared to the S because it doesnt have variable valve timing. both great cars tho the rx8 is very comfortable.

    I would have taken the 350Z over a RX-8 anyday. I heard the Rotary engine is very needy. There was an article that stated that you would have to keep adding engine oil weekly because the engine design tends to use up oil quickly.

    one thing i heard about these cars, is that u should never start it up and then turn it off instantly, b/c u can risk flooding the engine. is that b/c of the Renesis rotary engine? IDK...

    • @Saboda53
      @Saboda53 6 років тому

      True. When the engine is cold - i.e. the car’s been sitting overnight - you should let it warm up first before turning it off to avoid chance of flooding it. Takes about 3 minutes to warm up. (Note that you only need to do this when engine is stone cold. If engine was running any time over last several hours, you can start it up and turn it right off same as any ordinary car.)

    i have driven both the Manuel and auto of this car (one from 06 other from 09) and in both the power delivery is really not smooth, its more clunky / sloppy. it has no power until you hit 7600 / 8000 RPM and when it comes in it almost gives a torque steer like FWD car (due to being to strange of power band) the MPG (for you Americans) is terrible i was getting around 16 / 19 and i was burning a quart of oil every month... honestly for the same money i was able to get a 95 camaro ss and im much happier with it... plus it gets similar MPG and im in Europe :) (more rare here)
