    You can also use higher saturation in the camera or a different color mode like s-cine tone or ITU-709 Matrix color mode with high saturation and the Slog3 gamma, and this will actually help keep the colors together bettter when shooting 8-bit. I used to do this all the time with my a73, and it worked so well I barely noticed when switching to 10-bit as long as I had my white balance nailed down.

    Hey Mark! Thank you for this video! What a crazy coincidence as I’ve been exploring S-Log profiles on my little Dougie last couple of days! I was extremely confused about eye-detection problems with S-Log profiles while overexposed, good to know this is a common issue.
    First of all, I should say, your channel is on the “Special Thanks” section of LeemingLUT website! Congrats on that! And I don’t think you can say “he doesn’t know me” from now on 😂
    And also, in regard to auto focus issues again, my best workaround so far is to disable eye detection whatsoever (you can easily do that just by enabling product showcase mod), then set autofocus area to “Zone” and move it where your pretty mug is going to be in frame. Then I step down by 2 notches parameters regarding to auto-focus responsiveness, so it doesn’t distract immediately to waving hands etc. And there you go, this way I get pretty consistent picture in terms of focus and almost no backlights pulsing.
    Cheers!

    Thanks for this video. I was scared to use SLOG3 with my ZV-E10 but I have now started - I'm loving the results! Somehow the Leeming LUT looks better when using SLOG3 than with HLG3.
    It seems like you get color artifacts if you don't lock your exposure. I'm only using EV +1.0 in SLOG3 and use Leeming Athena. In Premiere, I increase my exposure by 2.5 and that seems to do the trick. Then just add contrast to taste.
    The focusing issues seem to occur when your camera is under-exposed. Using EV +1.0 or above is fixing the focusing issues.
    So far I'm leaving my white balance on auto and it's working fine. Need to experiment more and see.

      So what is a better vlog camera ?
      The zve10 with a wide lens, or a Nikon z30 with kit lens?
      The zve10 with an additional lens is then almost the same as the zve1

    • @CornerstoneWorshipTutorials
      @CornerstoneWorshipTutorials 11 місяців тому +2

      @@spirittravels. Imho the ZV-E10 is for sure the better vlog camera (than the Nikon Z30). However, if you _do_ want to get into the Nikon system, the Z30 may be a good starting point, but the ZV-E10 is a much better camera. A ZV-E10 with an additional lens (for example a Sigma 16mm or 30mm or Viltrox 23mm) will be approximately around $1000-1150, if you get the ZV-E10 stock price ($698). If you get it used, however, you can really cut down prices, and the whole setup could be less than $1000, which is less than half the price of the ZV-E1 currently! Of course, it's up to you to decide, but the ZV-E10 is never a bad starting point imo.

    If you want to reduce banding (which happens alot with shooting slog 2&3 on 8 bit cameras). Add at least +20 saturation to the slog 2 or 3 picture profile. And in post when you use the transform luts (like leeming or phantom or Sony s709 lut) reduce the overall saturation by the percentage you increase it in camera and banding is gone or severally reduced.
    I prefer phantom luts. They give a very natural cinematic look equivalent to arri log c.

    Great content as usual and really pleased that Little Dougie still finds his way into your camera bag. I have many Sony Cameras from A7iii up to the FX3 and really pleased with the results. But with these higher end cameras I expect them to deliver great results because of the cost. But always surprised at how good the videos from the ZV-E10 are and top top value to buy. Going to buy the leeming luts now on the back of this video. Keep plugging Little Dougie - a little beast that snaps at the heels of bigger dogs!!! Be great though if Meike or the like built a battery grip for the ZV-E10 as the battery life as mentioned is rubbish. I know there is a third party one out there but the design and build quality looks questionable.

    Mark, as the ZV e10 world’s top expert 😊, I have a question only you may know: if I output 1080p60 via HDMI to an Atem Mini, without recording internally does the file format for rec settings (4K or 1080p) would impact the HDMI output quality? Like, if the camera set to record in 4K would it output a better 1080p via HDMI? Thanks a lot for you input and keep the great work on this marvelous piece of gear!

      it’s possible, because Gerald Undone showed setting the A1 camera to 8k but recording to a 4K recorder made better footage. but I’ve never tried that. Maybe give it a test a and do a side-by-side

    Thank you for reminding me about those excellent LUTs. Quick question: Do you notice any unusual color artifacts, especially on the skin? UA-cam's conversion should eliminate most of them, so it's hard to tell. However, I've been able to fix these issues by increasing the saturation by +20 in Picture Profile and then reducing it in post-processing. It's a good tip for anyone having the same issue.

    When I got my E10 I started learning about profiles, hlg3 and SLog, color grading and so on; then one day I had the idea to use some short videos with different PP, luts and corrections to ask my friends and coworkers with of the samples they liked the most. I was very surprised when, after so many hours learning and practicing, almost all of them told me their favourite was PP off.
    So now I like to know about the technical stuff in videos like this, but in the end I just do what the people around me say they want: if I use my Sigma 18-50 I use PP off without any color correction (just 10 seconds adding a tiny bit of contrast in post and that's it); and if I use a manual or vintage lens I use PP3 straight from the camera (it has some violet tint and sometimes I correct it slightly). I know it's not technically the best or most accurate, but it's my audience who makes the rules for me.

    Your videos have helped me quite a bit. I started a welding UA-cam channel for fun, but I already want to step things up and do other content. I've cleared out a small room in our house that was mainly being used for storage to use as my mini studio. I just got a ZV-E10 along with a Sigma 16mm lens. I went from a GoPro 7 to a GoPro 12, and from using the GoPro mic to a Comica wireless one. I then started debating using my older A6000, but the lack of 4k, and no mic input make it less than ideal for video. I'm about to paint, once that's done I can start setting things up! Any color recommendations?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

      a grey is great. not too light or dark. medium (or middle grey like the grey card) Great for skin tones and you can change the colour by shining any light on it. also great for knowing your white blade is proper.

    It would be interesting to see a video of LeemingLut vs just using the Sony one or one of the many free ones available online, e.g. FreshLuts. It just feels like a bit of a downgrade in usability to have a crippled exposure meter + reduction in autofocus performance, etc.
    I've recently tried every mode on my ZV-E1 when it comes to exposure, multi, centre weight, face priority, manually exposing with zebras set to 70%, etc, etc and multi face priority was to my surprise great (in simple-ish studio like yours). I then downloaded a few random highly rated LUTs from FreshLuts and tried both SLOG3 and Rec.709 LUTs and both looked really fantastic and to my eye appeared as better starting points than LeemingLut, without the usability downgrades. I'm a colour grading noob though so maybe I am missing something obvious.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  11 місяців тому +1

      you can use that for video, but it doesn’t have the same swatches in the same places. the video editors can sometimes just automatically line up the video checker and do it for you. And more importantly, the video colour checker has the black, middle grey and white strip which makes it easier to adjust you exposure. but you can make any colour checker work, just marks out the black to white chips and you’ll be able to do a similar thing.
