  • Going back to the late '80s, when this rivalry was at its peak. Joe Montana and the juggernaut Niners are going for their second straight Super Bowl appearance as they host Jim "don't call me Chris" Everett and the Rams, in the first playoff meeting ever between the two franchises.

Pat Summerall was a fine Announcer. The template and benchmark for all time though was set by the incomparable Vin Scully eight years before. His unimaginable call from "Baghdad by the Bay" transcended even the great game itself. The Cowboys versus 49ers clash in 1981 was probably the most exciting in NFL history. Made even better by the peerless team of Scully and Hank Stram. Unlike the overly verbose John Madden, Stram never over broadcast as a commentator. Madden too often sounded like he was speaking to a five year old in a sandbox. As if every listener was clueless and unknowing. Give me Scully and Stram over any team to ever broadcast over the airwaves.

So many things I miss about football after watching this video. Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. Roger Craig and Tom Rathman. Pat Summerall and John Madden. Candlestick Park. Old school Goodyear blimps. When the NFL was city vs city. When they let the players play the game instead of ticky tack penalties. Homemade signs in the stands. I don't think we'll ever see the NFL like that again.

The settlement in 2001 made sure that players would be much more protected.
That is why you see quarterbacks that cant handle a pass rush winning championships going into the HOF now. The salary cap in '94 also waters teams down.

Just dominating the Vikings, and the Rams at this game in the playoffs. Then the Super Bowl putting up 55 points and could have scored 70 if they wanted to. Unfortunately. the Rams beat the Niners in the last regular season game in 1982, the strike year. The Niners and Rams both had poor records going the game but a Niner win would have placed them in the playoffs.

The thing is, the was NOT a bad Rams team. When you go on the road and beat two very tough teams in the Giants and Eagles, you're for real. These Niners were just too good. They were just a few points away from being undefeated. Just...wow!! And this might not have been their best team of the 1980's.

Nope 89 Niners better outscoring opponents 126-26 they still hold the largest margin victory in SB history. 85 bears were also 15-1 and won the SB so your argument doesn’t really work anyway.
