Remember this like it was yesterday I was 13 sealed Montana and the 49ers on way team of the 80s. No insult on Brady what he did in his career is amazing but the 49ers of the 80s were in a stacked NFC the Redskins, Bears and Giants were all great teams also the Eagles and Rams had solid teams that didn't get to Super Bowl. The way those 49ers teams consistently stood above those other powerhouse teams is a tribute to how good they were. Unless another QB comes along proves me wrong Montana most clutch playoff QB all time
As a 8 year old this made me 49ers fan forever because of Jerry Rice. But That Bears 1984-88 era should have had at least two more Super Bowls. They were my older brother and dad squad because they loved Walter Payton.
That fog bowl may have robbed the Eagles and Cunningham of a spot in this game. Not that the 49ers would lose, this was the year after Anthony Carter and the Vikings upset the 49ers in the divisional playoffs, they were on a mission and were loaded. I believe they struggled early this year coming off that playoff loss, Montana/Young was big going into the season, but when they settled down they were awesome. Better than their record for sure. The year prior, I think they only lost one game, maybe two, so the Vikings knocking them off was insane and if it didn’t happen who knows how it goes. It could’ve been a Super Bowl against the Broncos in 87, this season against the Bengals, then again against the Broncos when they blew them out, and the next season losing a close one to the Giants in San Francisco after Montana was mauled by Leonard Marshall. The 49ers beat the Giants on MNF earlier that year 7-0, if Montana stays in the 90 NFC championship the 49ers could’ve won meaning they could’ve had a legit shot at four Super Bowls in a row and possibly winning all four. The Vikings and Giants weren’t having it tho.. I was an eastern Pennsylvanian 49ers fan but I had a soft spot for Cunningham, even more so when he was with the Vikings. Also I’m jealous of the Eagles getting Cooper Dejean in the draft, I wanted the 49ers to get him
Bear Weather didn't intimidate the men from Northern California. Maybe Joe Montana's finest performance, one of the finest victories in 49ers franchise history
My thoughts exactly. I knew they were no joke when they handled them in the cold in Chicago. I was a sr in high school. I'm a die hard Cowboys fan. This was during our down years. We're really down now😢
That was their best shot for the Bears and it was the beginning of the end for Mike Dikta. The 49ers were just the better team that got hot at the right time after their 6-5 debacle. They put it together and for the Bears their luck ran out. They just didn't have any consistent QB play and their defense held the team together. It was Jim McMahon's last game as a Bear and even then he didn't play much the week before. For the 49ers, their run would continue for another 2 years until the Giants knocked them off that perch.
Actually, 1987 was the beginning of the end for Mike Ditka. Especially when the players went on strike. Adding insult to injury, Ditka called his replacement players “The Real Bears” which obviously did not sit well with the regulars. Even worse, Ditka and Mike McKaskey were never truly on the same page to begin with. Remember, McKaskey did not hire Ditka in the first place. The Late Great George Halas did.
It was pretty close to as good a game a team could play in a championship game. The 49ers, west-coasters on the road in frigid Chicago, a touchdown put up on the board in each of the four quarters, and no turnovers or penalties committed!
For all of their great wins in the 80's for the Niners, this was their best win. They went into a cold Chicago and beat the stuffing out of the Bears on their field, with their weather, with their fans and showed how great they were. Bill Walsh to me is the greatest coach of all time, as he took a LOT of small college players and turned them into great players like no other. Also, calling the Niners a finesse team was the biggest JOKE of all time as well. Ironically, this was Joe Montana's only road win in the playoffs (despite being the greatest regular season road QB ever) for the Niners. He did beat Houston in the dome in 93 as a Chief for his other road playoff win.
I was an almost 16 year old Bears fan watching this game. I had no question in my mind that game was going to go down exactly like it did. I loved Jim McMahon and he was a winner. But he was no Joe Montana.
49ers only gave up one offensive touchdown in three playoff games. In fact, they also did the same thing in 1984. As great as Montana, Rice, Craig etc were, the 49ers defense was lights out for their titles in 1984, 1988, and 1989.
I remember the week leading up to this game the Bay Area sports anchors mentioned how the freezing temperatures could have a negative impact on the 49ers. Also, the Niners lost to the Bears on MNF in the same stadium during the ‘88 regular season. None of that mattered because the Niners were simply the better team at this point in the season. The Bears ran into a buzz saw. Bill Walsh mentioned on America’s game, “The Bears just didn’t have the full package to be a team of destiny.”
I was a 14 year old Bear's fan in Chicago. A brutal, depressing loss. We were never in it. This was the official end of the Bears as a force in the NFC. Well and truly beaten by the 49ers. To be honest, the 49ers had a lot more talent at the skill positions. Montana, Rice, Taylor, Craig, Rathman......compare that to the Bears: An injury-plagued McMahon, McKinnon, Anderson, Morris. No contest.
@@scottdavidson9963 On paper, yes. Really underachieved in the playoofs. They had great regular seasons from 84-88. Just undone by the fact that McMahon could not stay healthy and truly mediocre backup QBs. We didn't have Steve Young coming in after Joe Montana ;)
@@jamescook4116 I’m a die hard Bears fan and I remember this game but the 49ers were just a superior team and superior organization. The myth of “Bear Weather” died on this day. Like you said, the Bears were never Super Bowl contenders for a long time after this.
The vikikgs swept the Bears in 1988. Huwever, the vikings were swept by a 4-win packer team. If the vikings had beat the packers one time, they woulg have had home field throughout the nfc playoffs.
SF was great, no doubt. Would have been interesting if Ditka didnt take audibles away from McMahon that game. He saw the defensive sets and had to run the called play from Ditka.
49ers were magic in the 80's.
49ers defense was so underrated in the 80's.
Montana was unreal.
Yup. 84 was their best team EVER. 1 loss by 3 points. 18-1.
It was actually two points@@scottdavidson9963

No Qb. Bears 1 year wonder team.
I'm a life long Eagles fan, but I have to admit, the 49ers of the 1980's were the best. Montana, Rice and company were unstoppable!

1986-87 divisional round:
Giants 49, 49ers 3.
1990-91 NFC Championship:
Giants 15, 49ers 13.
Stopped. Twice.
Just like Dallas in the 90s
What a catch by Rice at 2:37! WOW!!!
I wish I grew up watching him. The only Rice I remember was 2004 Seahawks LOL
Rice was completely on a different level. I was lucky enough to watch him growing up in his prime.

I remember all of this well the 49ers stood above all those other power house teams. NFC was very strong in the 80s to mid 90s

one of my favorite niners defense!
The 9ers of the 80’s were simply Awesome. Every time they took the field you knew they were going to win.
PS: Summeral and Madden were the best.
2:34, 6:32, Another great post! Keep them coming, especially the old school ones💯
Joe Montana and the 49er's forging their legacy real time. Total domination of a really good team.
Rice wasn’t the only player on the field … he’s a great player but the commentators should respect the rest of this amazing team
San Francisco sports DOMINATED Chicago in 1989 between this and the NLCS between the SF Giants and Chicago Cubs later in the year
All four chicago sports were one series away from the final bears bulls blackhawks and cubs
I would have liked to have seen a Chicago and Cincinnati Super Bowl. I wonder how that would have turned out.
Pat summeral and John Madden , the absolute best.
Rathmann, and he can hurt some people. Classic Pat Summerall commentary.
I was 16 watching this game & was going crazy just happy they won in Chicago, early that season they beat us 10 to 3 & we weren't looking good

Man it's nice to watch teams score without doing obnoxious preplanned team celebrations afterwards.
Wow it was quiet. Must've been a sad and devastating loss. You could hear a pin drop in there.
Bears fans had to know that that era of winning was coming to an end.

A single playoff game win after Super Bowl. 1 yesr wonder team.

This was a beat down. They didn't care about the cold weather. That's tough to do.
Tom Brady would have been crying to his mama trying to play back in this era

Those 49er teams were winners, unlike the current losers.
Cool Joe
Facts, Joe, Jerry, & Ronnie knew how to get it done.
49ers of the 80s are similar to the Chiefs of the 2020s
@@saber26ful well, both won their share of SBs
LIVE by the blitz, and you will die by the blitz, especially when the offense is in the spread
I watched that game
I was disapointed

We only have to be here for three hours. They have to live here.
old fashioned full back...1988
It shows the Mike ditka was in a great coach!
Grandes equipos .. ay q reconocer ... Yo soy Cowboys 🤘🏻🏉
The intro is shortened.
Yes because of UA-cam copyrights
Bears were never the same after 1985. Giants, Skins and 49ers were just better.
The DESTRUCTION of the Bears Defense was complete, IN THEIR OWN HOUSE!
Da Bears!
This garbage bears team didn't even belong on the same field as the 49ers
Put the same 49er fan on the field today at the ages they are and they don't win the Super Bowl........
I used to live for these games I'm from Cincinnati but I was a niners fan not a fan of no one anymore of this fake garbage from today
