Gary Danielson threw FIVE INTS and the Lions still should've won. Whole different game 40 years ago. Shoutout Billy Sims, the original running #20 for Detroit (don't wanna snub the great Lem Barney).
Danielson was a very mediocre-at-best QB during his career and even that description maybe too kind and polite because a lot of other times, frankly he just sucked. Eric Hipple wasnt much better, but he did show flashes of being a really good, not Pro-Bowl caliber QB but above-serviceable. Thats one major reason why those early 80's Lions teams only went so far despite being loaded with great, Pro-Bowl talent on both sides of the ball but like the then-L.A. Rams, what kept them from going further was terrible, woeful QB play. If they had had a Joe Ferguson, Steve Bartkowski, or Steve Grogan second-tier like QB's back then, they wouldve won 2-3 games then they did and gone further in the post-season. Detroit Lions, at least in the context of the 1980's, their run ended when Billy Sims suffered an ACL injury next season in a game vs. Vikings and these injuries, back in that time-period were usually career-enders. It's very likely that if Sims had never gotten injured, remained healthy for well over a decade or so, Detroit achieves a lot more success but there's a catch... They likely don't end up needing a RB in the 1989 draft and probably aren't in the high position to get one anyway so Barry Sanders never plays for the Lions.
@@davidroberts7282 I thought about if Billy never got hurt but by 1989 he would have been a bit past his prime. Sanders never had a decent backup running back and he desperately needed one.
Joe Montana finished the game completing 18 of 31 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown, with one interception, while also rushing for 16 yards. Lions quarterback Gary Danielson finished his only career playoff game completing 24 of 38 passes for 236 yards, but was intercepted five times. Lions running back Billy Sims was the top rusher of the game with 20 carries for 116 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 26 yards. That’s a classic playoff performance!!!

That one was a heartbreaker. The lions really should’ve won that one… if Danielson didn’t have a career bad day, and if Murray, one of the best kickers at that time, could make a (for the time) difficult but reasonably plausible field goal.
Was just saying how much the state of Kicking -punting & field goals- has improved throughout the entire league. By leaps and bounds compared to the 80s
Unless you had a Morten Andersen or Gary Anderson on your team back then as PK, most NFL PK's 40 years ago are mediocre, underachieving noobs compared to their modern successors.
Although, I will say their were some very good, reliable PK's back then like Norm Johnson of Seattle, Raphael Septien of Dallas, and Eddie Murray of course with Detroit. The thing is or the problem with Eddie Murray is that most seasons during his career, he'd be the kind of PK who makes 35-44 and 35/35 on XP's but he tended to have a knack for missing potential game-winning FG's or FG's that closed games. He was extremely accurate except sometimes when you really needed him to be, he choked or missed. In other words, Murray wasnt always the best clutch kicker. Other PK's during that era were much more reliable (and Clutch) like Norm Johnson, and Morten Andersen and when you have the whole world on your shoulders, hopes and dreams of your entire team riding on making that game-winning FG in OT that takes you to the playoffs or wins a playoff game, that's the sign of how great a PK you really are. Murray didn't always rise up to that ultimate challenge when his team's and city's hopes were depending on him the most.

Detroit was the first non-expansion team to lose every game in a full season since World War II. This was their second winless season in franchise history (1942, see below). With this season, the Lions became only the second NFL franchise with two full winless seasons, and the only one still in existence; this was also the first winless season since the institution of the 16-game schedule in 1978 (that was used until 2020). 😂😂😂😂 GO PACK GO!!

@@lemontadams3029 Is absolutely a dual threat. 3 rings to prove it. This is a perfect example of the man not getting the respect he deserves. The 40 niners would not have won without him. It was a juggernaut of a team effort
WR Mark Nichols was the Lions first round pick in 1981. During the air traffic controller strike in July of that year, I was at the Lions training camp at Oakland University playing basketball with him and he took his wet jersey off and threw it on the floor and I went up for a rebound and slipped on his wet jersey and sprung my ankle, the day before I was supposed to leave for Marine Corps Boot camp.

He was such a phenomenon... I kinda remember watching this game, dont remember how close it really was, and I remember not being concerned in the least that they were going to win. That's what being one of the Faithful meant to me during the Montana/Walsh era.
This was a very talented 49er team the Lions almost defeated. The next year, the Niners would put together the most dominant NFL season in history - missing perfection by only a field goal.
I was 13 YO while watching this game with my parents and brother. I was convinced that the 49ers weren't going to make it, but when the missed FG attempt happened, I jumped up, started running through the house completely ecstatic and tackled the closet door, making a mess inside. I heard one of the commentators then say "the 49ers should not have won". I'm hearing so many people say that this week. My father inspected the closet door and concluded that there was no damage and I wouldn't be in trouble, and then he reminded me every year during 49er playoffs not to tackle the closet door. I went to my neighbors house one year during one of the 49er games, so he called over there and said "make sure he doesn't attack the closet door!" The neighbor was like "huh"? This past Sunday evening I didn't have a closet door to tackle because I was in a hotel room, so I thought about going after the bathroom door, but I figured the neighbors would have called downstairs to complain, I could hear my father laughing and rubbing it in "haha whatcha gonna tackle now?". I also kept hearing something in the background to the effect of "history repeats itself, and we're here to confirm it." Good memories, good times!
You're absolutely right about this and some other playoff games being forgotten... I watched this game, I remember where I watched it and who I watched it with and that the Forty Niners won... But that's all. 1983 was my ALL TIME favorite Forty Niner campaign too!
Danielson wasn't a great quarterback, but to come back with only a minute to go and get the team into field goal range with a chance to win after five interceptions showed some intestinal fortitude.
Back in the day. Back when there were only 2 Wild Card games, the Seahawks were in the AFC, and of course the Detroit Lions were in the infamous NFC Central! @@chrisuncleahmad666 Like the 49ers, they won in come from behind fashion on the road. And that yr, the Seahawks made their lone AFC title game and lost to the final Raiders team to win the SB. The anniversary of Super Bowl 18 was earlier this week.
The Washington-Detroit matchup wouldn't have been interesting. The Lions: A) Hadn't beaten Washington since 1965 B) Had never beaten Washington in Washington. And the season before, they annihilated the Lions in the playoffs in RFK Stadium.
Frank Glieber and Dick Vermeil called this one on CBS. Lions Quarterback Gary Danielson would end up with the SEC Football on CBS as the analyst 23 years later. Frank Glieber’s last game before he passed away was a Trail Blazers-Lakers NBA Playoff game on CBS in 1985. His analyst? James Brown, who now hosts The NFL Today on CBS.
6:16 - An overlooked but critical play by #21 and 22 for the 49ers. What should of been a long TD run turns into just a field goal. That was four points left off the board by Detroit in a game they lost by one.
The Lions were resilient to have a chance to win with five interceptions. I was sicker than a dog that day, heard the crowd cheer from bed after Murray missed from 43.

This reminds me of the USFL as most of the team helmets in that league were silver or gold just like here! I also miss the Lions old wordmark font, that "western" font that San Fran and Dallas both still use.
As it should be. Nowadays it just seems to be robokickers kicking in perfect conditions. Back then you had different types of grass fields...sometimes ok conditions, sometimes not at all good. Man it’s crazy you had to watch a football game without a scorebug or first down lines. I grew up in a great era of football TV being born in late 80’s
We didnt need it, the football was great. It's a luxury but if the scorebug and 1st down line vanished I would love football all the same I think one of the reasons they really took a while introducing it is that they wanted the fans to be told the score/time. That way they would linger and stay with the game longer. If you tuned into a game and it's 35-0 in the 3rd you'd probably tune out faster than if the score wasnt posted. Back then you had to stay on the game longer
I'm from Boone county Kentucky right over the river from Cincinnati believe me I know the heartbreak of Joe Montana never leave anytime on the clock for Cincinnati fans we're still not over them games I was 16 in 1980 so that's my he broke our hearts
With 5 ints by the 49er defense this game should've been a rout by the 49ers. But it is a 60 minute football game. Give the Lions credit for making a game of it and almost winning. But no match for Montana and company in the clutch. Go 49ers!

Shout out to James Jones an excellent fullback, and no.20 Billy Sims (if only he could have stayed healthy). The best team the Lions have ever had in my lifetime. Maybe this weekend the outcome will be different.
Don't forget Bubba Baker.
GO PACK GO!!
chip SHOT WIDE RIGHT ;; 41 year later THEY MEET AGAIN in San Fran Jan. 28 2024 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME LONG LONG LONG WAIT ;;
Remember this as a kid. Murray’s 2 missed fgs killed us. Don’t win many w 5 ints, but for as good as he was, Eddie killed us
Yup the Lions basically lost the game more than the 49ers won it.
He hit one over 50 yards out.
It’s amazing that with all the ineptitude of Gary Danielson showed they Lions still had a chance to steal that game
Look...I'm a Chicago Bears fan and we play the Lions twice a year I hope the Bear whip the Lions every time we play them...I'm rooting for the Lions today and I know a lot of Bear fans are, as well...Now, can Detroit please bring back these uniforms again??...P.S. I remember watching this game and Detroit should have won this one...
These are some of my favorite throwback games. The ones before I started watching football (starred early 90’s). All the better getting to see my Niners win.
I remember watching this game it was on New Year's Eve Lions fan I remember thinking this game is a lot closer than it should have been. And now that I rewatch it I can see why.
The heartbreak ends, today
Thanks for this!
I was looking for this game a while back and nobody had it
40 years later and the Lions put together their greatest season in the Super Bowl era
Will they win the sb?
@@kevinuchiha6830 Probably not but it would be insane if they somehow did.
0-16 never forget.. 😂 GO PACK GO
16 years ago. irrelevant@@walterwhite1
@@walterwhite1 If only we got Packers Lions in the NFC Championship this year. It would’ve been a great must watch.
I remember this game very well. I still feel the pain of Murray's missed field goal.
Roger Craig was so ahead of his time as a duel threat RB. Deserves to be in the HOF
He was also a great Wordl Series pitching coach for the Tigers.
The fumble keeps him out.
The fact that he is not in the hall of fame is disgraceful. One of if not the best halfback in history
Hardly the 1st duel threat
Amazing divisional playoff! Thrilling ending.
7:11 - that banner says"Where is America's team? At home watching", proving that our parents and grandparents trolled fans of opposing NFL teams the same way we do
Thanks for the video NFL Throwback! I didn’t even realize that these 2 teams actually faced each other in the playoffs before.
they also played way back in 1957, a divisional tiebreak game (both teams had gone 8-4). the Lions trailed 27-7 but scored the last 24 points to win
The comeback kid never disappoints😅
He was such a phenomenon...
I kinda remember watching this game, dont remember how close it really was, and I remember not being concerned in the least that they were going to win.
That's what being one of the Faithful meant to me during the Montana/Walsh era.
Gary Danielson displaying pinpoint accuarcy with finding the Niners secondary...
Meatloaf was a pretty good head coach. Good thing he fell back on music.
Good Morning Football had Gary Danielson on and they featured highlights of this game. Danielson threw 5 picks in this game.
This video two days ago, 2023 NFC Championship game on yesterday, that's some kinda INSANITY
The sight of Monte praying on the sideline before Murray's kick has stayed with me all this time...... 🤣
Well, he couldn't go unto a closet....
I was there at this game. Never saw the actual broadcast. Thanks for posting. What memories. Go NINERS!
And special shoutout to Billy Sims. Hell of a player that would have had a more memorable career if it wasn't for that knee injury.
He was an awesome running back. I remember him as being a very dangerous running back.
I’m glad I got to see this one. Excellent game! Hopefully more games like these will be revisited as history allows. Good luck on Sunday, Detroit.
You're absolutely right about this and some other playoff games being forgotten...
I watched this game, I remember where I watched it and who I watched it with and that the Forty Niners won... But that's all.
1983 was my ALL TIME favorite Forty Niner campaign too!
The joy of those Forty Niner fans!!! The 80's were glorious days!
Danielson, Simms, Murray, Marlborough ads.
Classic indeed.
After Danielson's 5th INT did everyone say, "Turn the clicker over to 'Moonlighting'. I hear that Bruce Willis guy is pretty funny." ????
Moonlighting iirc was mid 80s. Used to watch it with my future wife. We like to think we "discovered" Bruce Willis
Been waiting to see my Lions in this playoff game, thanks for the download☺️
Thank You For Uploading This Video 📸 NFL Throwback
I could not believe Murray choked like that. Great teams always get the breaks.
Definitely the lions out played the 49ers, 5 interceptions killed them
Oh wow! Beautiful shot around 1:25 of the seats used for baseball at Candlestick Park
All the empties at the football games always made for a bad look.
@@scotttildThose seats werent sold they were mostly obstructed views
Happy 40th anniversary to this playoff game 1983/84-2023/24
Malborro advertisement lol
Danielson wasn't a great quarterback, but to come back with only a minute to go and get the team into field goal range with a chance to win after five interceptions showed some intestinal fortitude.
This is awesome .. thank you for the memories
Back in the day. Back when there were only 2 Wild Card games, the Seahawks were in the AFC, and of course the Detroit Lions were in the infamous NFC Central! I hate to say it like this, but the original wide right!? What an interesting NFC Championship that would have been..Detroit and Washington. Well, the Lions are here now, and this is their chance! Super excited for this NFC Championship Game 🔥
Those Seahawks you mentioned won at Miami earlier on the same day as this DET/SF game
@@chrisuncleahmad666 They sure did! They beat my Broncos to get to that game😭
Yep! The NFC Central division was no joke!
The Lions:
A) Hadn't beaten Washington since 1965
B) Had never beaten Washington in Washington.
And the season before, they annihilated the Lions in the playoffs in RFK Stadium.
Eddie Murray and his misses… great
Frank Glieber and Dick Vermeil called this one on CBS.
Gary was with ABC college football for a while with Brent Musburger and Jack Arute. They had some great calls
Ya the sec guy everyone loved lmao

@@packersauburneric3625 yup! That's when I became a Mich fan. I loved David Terrell
Jesus 5 ints plus kicker misses 2 FG’s, Lions should have won.
Lions in a nutshell
Judging by the crowd they had allot in common with Lion William Gay.
6:16 - An overlooked but critical play by #21 and 22 for the 49ers. What should of been a long TD run turns into just a field goal. That was four points left off the board by Detroit in a game they lost by one.
21 - Eric Wright. 22 - Dwight Hicks.
So the Bills aren’t the only one with a heart breaking wide right loss.
Wide right before wide right became a thing
The Lions were resilient to have a chance to win with five interceptions. I was sicker than a dog that day, heard the crowd cheer from bed after Murray missed from 43.
In this day and age, those missed field goals would be career ending. Murray survived this and is in the alions HOF.
I remember it oh so well! 14 years old & I idolized Billy Sims! The Lions scratched & clawed all day despite Gary Danielson quarterbacking like “Mr Magoo”. I will never forget the drama with the field goal & Monte Clark 🙏 for it to clear the uprights. I remember how dejected I was. I remember I punched a hole in my bedroom wall & I never did that again! 😂
I miss these classic looking uniforms. I remember the 70s so well when Detroit and San Fran were bottom feeders. Would be cool if Detroit actually wins tomorrow but I have my doubts. This reminds me of the USFL as most of the team helmets in that league were silver or gold just like here! I also miss the Lions old wordmark font, that "western" font that San Fran and Dallas both still use.
Anyone else here after the niners just won the nfc championship against the lions
Montana magic.
Field goal kicking sure was an adventure back then!
As it should be. Nowadays it just seems to be robokickers kicking in perfect conditions. Back then you had different types of grass fields...sometimes ok conditions, sometimes not at all good. Also some crazy winds in some places. Shea, Meadowlands, Chicago. Minnesota in the dead of winter wasnt easy to kick in
The Lions will see you boys next year at the NFC divisional championship for part 3.
Both quarterbacks are wearing #16. Let’s get it today Jared Goff!
Lions choked
One of the greatest Detroit Lions teams of all time.
Before this year, the Lions never had a good team.
@jimnfl7134 yes they did, they dominated the 50's and were still good from 1962-1970
@@jimnfl7134 '90s and '50s (NFL titles). Also a few good teams during the 2010s.
Commentators Sunday said oh look there's Barry Sanders in that last contest. No that's Billy Sims know your history lol
r.i.p. Russ Francis
Murray would help the Cowboys win Super Bowl 28 a decade later.
he was on fire with the Cowboys only season there.
This was a great game. Lions had a lot of INTS and still had a chance!
Man it’s crazy you had to watch a football game without a scorebug or first down lines. I grew up in a great era of football TV being born in late 80’s
We didnt need it, the football was great. It's a luxury but if the scorebug and 1st down line vanished I would love football all the same
I think one of the reasons they really took a while introducing it is that they wanted the fans to be told the score/time. That way they would linger and stay with the game longer. If you tuned into a game and it's 35-0 in the 3rd you'd probably tune out faster than if the score wasnt posted. Back then you had to stay on the game longer
I haven't forgot about it I was about 10 years old
Watching young Montana, I do see similarities to Brock Purdy. Hopefully Purdy can stay healthy.
I'm from Boone county Kentucky right over the river from Cincinnati believe me I know the heartbreak of Joe Montana never leave anytime on the clock for Cincinnati fans we're still not over them games I was 16 in 1980 so that's my he broke our hearts
Hey script writers, don't mind about the Super Bowl logo color theory, america wants the Lions in the big game
The offensive pass interference was crazy
Another heartbreaking loss for the Lions 😢
Some teams like the Bills, Browns and Lions always suffer these types of losses. While other franchises get all the great breaks.
@@ALastShotonTwoGoodHorsesDont forget the Saints. Besides the one year that they got lucky in, 2009.
I was hoping this game would come up! It's the playoff meeting between 49ers and Lions in the Super Bowl era
With 5 ints by the 49er defense this game should've been a rout by the 49ers. But it is a 60 minute football game. Give the Lions credit for making a game of it and almost winning. But no match for Montana and company in the clutch. Go 49ers!
