I was at the game with my best friend Jim. We were able to get the tickets at face value from a co-worker. We were just 21, we were offered $500 each outside of Soldier Field. We looked at each other and I remember saying this is a once in a lifetime. Back then we did not know it may be the best time of our life. It was cold and windy and even a little light snow, but that day we did not care we were so fortunate to be there as the Bears went on to beat the Patriots in their next game to win the super bowl. Pat Summerall and John Madden were the greatest team of sports announcers in broadcast history for any sport. Their passing has been a terrible loss to all us fans who followed their careers. I can relive the past on my Madden25 on Xbox 360. I play the 46 and my defense is even better than the 85 bears. And my offense while they can pass you dizzy, is the ultimate power team. Through 5 games of the season I started recently my defense has 78 sacks the sack leader having 34 himself. Even the 85 Bears didn't do that.
Todays game is arena ball on a larger field and there are no fundamentals any more. The 92 and 93 Cowboys would brutalize the soft finesse players of today. They cannot block or tackle worth a damn either.
I loved Keith Jackson calling college football Jim Nance for the masters Vin Scully and the Yankees John St3rling And the hawk from white Sox in baseball
This game is forever etched into my soul. The dominating defense, the snow coming down at the end of game and knowing that our first Super Bowl was two weeks away.
Some of you may have noticed Jeff Fisher standing next to Buddy Ryan in street clothes. He looks a little different with the full beard and longer hair. Fisher was a backup safety on that team since 1981. He broke his leg returning a punt and because he was a bright guy who had always played for Buddy Ryan they decided to use him to help the coaching staff. Of course Fisher would go on to be Buddy's secondary coach for the Eagles and later his DC. Then he would be a head coach for 21 years most of that for my Tennessee Titans. An interesting anecdote is that the guy who tackled him and caused his broken leg was Bill Cowher the hall of fame coach for the steelers.
I’m not a Bears fan (Panthers) but this defense will ALWAYS be the best. The 2000 Ravens are second, but they didn’t go 15-1 AND shut out 2 teams in the playoffs. This defense is LEGENDARY!
@Avingay Anfordstay these playoffs were totally setup for Chicago to dominate. The giants were not ready yet and the Rams didn't have a quarterback until they drafted Jim Everett. You had so many transitions that season. The 49ers were transitioning from Solomon/Clark era to Rice/Taylor. Both Joe Theismann and John riggins retired. The giants were up and coming but not ready yet. And to add, somehow Miami couldn't beat the patriots at home.
@@hazmathauler4536 no one said it was. I was explaining why the bears didn't win anything since then. Once teams figured out how to pass against the 46 defense it was over for them.
@@olschool121 no. McMahon got hurt from a cheap hit by GB and was never the same. the BEARS defense was better statsically in 86'. they just never had an offense that could stay on the field after McMahon got hurt.
This is the best CBS NFL Broadcast ever. The great comment lines by Pat Summerall and John Madden are CLASSIC. They are missed greatly and i loved their wonderful well delivered broadcasts. No one can match their quality and perfection
I was one of the 40k-plus people there for both the Giants game AND ‘this game in the South end zone. When it started snowing, we were cheering because it was George Halas celebrating with all of us. My friend whom I went to both of the games with, passed away very young. I have tears in my eyes now. Thanks Bart!
My only visit to Soldier field was the Seattle playoff game in 2010 sitting I think in section 427 or something. Loved it and loved it more when it started to snow in the second half and at that time I was thinking about watching this game.
I was there too with my best friend he had moved away a few years later, still have the ticket. Had the same emotional feelings thinking about lost friends and family... maybe the best day of my life.
@@myjunkisstuffgarage967 you guys at least don't get 8 feet of snow for your home games that forces you to play them somewhere else. it's happened to Buffalo twice now, which is why teams don't want to go to Buffalo in January
Still get the chills watching these and having grown up in Chicago as a kid in the 80s. Greatest group of characters that had characters. Relentless defense, and they took so much pride in it. It’s the bar all defenses are measured up to
I attended this game (42 yard line, row 22 on the Bears sideline) at Soldier's Field. The old school Bears fans truly erupted when the snow started to fall late in the game. I was wearing a Sony Walkman listening to the radio feed during the game. In the 4th quarter when Richard Dent sacked Dieter Brock and Wilbur Marshall picked up the fumble, I could hear Dick Butkus yelling in my ear "Ball! Ball!!" then "Ahhh Hahhh!" as Wilbur crossed the goal line for the final touchdown. Total euphoria. I was 22 years old at the time. That was one of the best moments of my life here in Chicago. Go Bears!!!
@@cacornhusker2940 Football. Hard to believe but in the 4 games Eric played against Walter (83, 84, 85 and 86) Walter never scored a TD and never had a 100 yard rushing game. One of my favorite unsung heroes on the 85 Bears DB Mike Richardson who was a great role player which seemed to pop up in many videos during that Superbowl championship season.
As a UK teenager in the 80s I became a Bears fan mainly because of Sweetness. He was something else. We used to watch the Channel 4 programme on Sunday evenings for our weekly fix back then. At the time I had no idea of how special that defense was. Looking back now with this wonderful footage you can see that they took no prisoners and must have scared the shit out of every quarterback they faced. It was a travesty that the Dolphins prevented them from a clean sweep that year, I remember the highlights of that game when Marino had a blinder and the luck was with them. The only blot on an otherwise immense season. Good times.
There will never, ever be a team like the '85 Bears. Payton, McMahon, the Fridge, Singletary, Hampton, Gault, Dent, Wilson, Butler, Da Coach, etc. An absolutely magical season! I still have the VHS 📼 tape from when we recorded the Super Bowl. What a magical season!🏈🏈
Greatest Defense Ever. Greatest Season Ever. Greatest Single Season in History. Multiple Recods set, many still stand. I would have a very difficult time trying to accurately explain how popular and transcendent these 1985 Bears were!
I'm not a Steelers fan (Giants), but I'll go with their 1976 defense as the best ever. They didn't even win the Super Bowl that year (Raiders), but that's only because their offense was ravaged with injuries. Check out the stats. They won their final 9 games. 5 of them were shutouts and that included 3 in a row. No doubt about the Bears in 1985, but I'll go with the Steelers in '76.
@@mikehatch1967 The 85 Chicago Bears had something that the 72 Dolphins did not. Every player had a certain charisma. The coaches and owners also had the charisma. Nobody ever really talks about the 72 Dolphins other than to say they went undefeated… and even then, it’s only when people talk about how amazing the 1985 Bears were. Someone will always say “well, what about the 72 Dolphins? They went undefeated.” Other than that, nothing really stands out about that team. The 1985 Bears immortalized themselves.
I was 10 and I remembered them wrestling and the frig in the Big Mac commercials was not a football fan. The first time seeing the 1985 bears was just now what a treat.
I lived through this in Chicago. What a year! What a team! That defense not only thrilled, they made you howl and laugh with absolute joy. Greatest defense ever.
WOW!!! Bears, what a team. Also Madden and Summerall are great! I am watching a game played 37 years ago and i don't want to miss a play! That's Football!!!
As a life time Packer fan, I fell in love with the 85 bears.. I always thought Walter Payton was the best running back in history, and I was happy to see him finally get a ring. I loved their attitude, as frustrating as it was to see the Fridge plow over my Packer D line on Monday night, I enjoyed following them through the playoffs.. Ditka, McMahon, Payton, and my goodness that Defense!!! Nothing more warming than hearing Pat Summarl and John Madden announcing the game. My how things have changed.
@@doubletake1238 Nothing to think about. Walter played on crappy teams from '77 to '83 and still ran for over 15K yards. Had he been playing for Pittsburgh, Dallas, etc. he'd have run for 20K.

How could you not be a fan, these guys just made a Bear fan one proud puppy! They kicked it, all there is to it. Still have my bears stocking hat from the 80's.
This was the age of DEE-FENSE in the NFC. The Bears, Giants, Redskins and yes, even the Niners (Ronnie Lott, Fred Dean, Hacksaw Reynolds, etc.) were all defensively dominant. Each took turns winning the 80s decade Super Bowls with only the Raiders breaking through from the AFC. I'm not a Bear fan, but this defense was awe-inspiring to watch.
this game was a lot closer than i thought, the rams should have had at least 14 points.the bad call that took back that long reception, and then they were about to score a td before the half.

it's an awesome memory! I completely agree. I was 25 at the time and had been a Bears fan since 1965, although I didn't fully understand it until 1967 and the first Superbowl. Everything was separate before then. But my father was born in Chicago so of course I was a fan. But the Bears like the Cubs sucked for along time, so it has been great to see both happen. It's too bad that George Halas died two years before in 1983. I became a Miami fan also when my grandparents moved to Florida in 1971. Both are great teams but the Bears are the oldest team in the league and helped invent the game. Only coach to beat George Halas as winning-est coach is Don Shula, who unfortunately passed away Monday. It should be the Halas Trophy - not lombardi
Thanks for bringing this one back as it disappeared for a bit. Summerall & Madden, what a team in the booth, too! The 46 largely shut down Dickerson from the onset. With Summerall's immortal calling "back to the line of scrimmage and NOTHING else". So classic. When the snow started that's what the fans wanted. Like it was magic dust for Wilber Marshall and result in a TD.
Yo, Singletary fucking OWNED dickerson in this game LUL. well, as far as the first qtr goes anyways. IM druk af and havnt quite made it to halftime lu.
That one hit might have been the biggest turning point in the whole game. If Singletary doesn't stop Dickerson here, the Rams keep the ball and who knows what happens?
@@DaDitkaThat was the play that stopped the rams mentally. Dickerson was a wishbone back that forgot to run once he went to pros and ran out of eye. If he get to hole clean he was 6'3 and long legged. Hard to tackle. Only try to push him to sideline and hope for inside pursuit.
I was there. I will never forget that game. That place went nuts went that happened. Everyone thought of Halas sending down the snow from above. Awesome times! There were a few people carrying around some huge Rams head too around the stadium. I have never heard that place so loud before. Best game I ever went to and I saw a lot of great ones. @@ExcellentfinishLike Burt, marshall, carson. The heart of that team. The Giants game vs Bears was only a play from being a close one. The Landata punt was the play of the game. The wind pushed the ball a foot to his right. The north end was the worst of all winds . Kevin Butler made the coaches take him. The snapper, punter and holder to practice at Soldier Field 3 days a week. He showed them the how trickey the wind could be from all directions. I was 10 years old watching this. I remember my dad telling me all week leading up to this game saying "the Monsters are going to kick the shit out of the Rams." My mom would get mad about the profanity but he'd just repeat "kick the shit out of them." Boy was he right about that.
Sad part was the Rams played them better than anyone else that season. Held the Bears to just 14 points. I know the Dolphins beat them in Miami but that was the fluke of the century
@@ReflectionOfPerfection The Dolphin win was not a fluke. I had been saying what the key to beating the Bears was and the Dolphins executed it to perfection. They went against one of the smartest coaches in Shula and a QB named Marino and receivers they couldn't cover.
After growing up on this type of football, watching them today running to the end zone to mug just seems so silly. These were much more exciting games to watch. No pointing for 1st downs
I hate the way they mug today. No class at all. These Bears really beat on people and you didn't see all the mugging from them. Or any of the other other teams either
I was at that game. The energy there was incredible, but I must admit that it's a lot more comfortable sitting in my living room watching on the screen than sitting in Soldier Field in January, and the Madden and Summerall broadcast makes it even better.
So was I. You are right the atmosphere was incredible. Everyone was so loud and excited, BUT everyone so so friendly and elated. You can't capture that on video or even begin to describe it. Best Bears game I ever saw.
2 of the best running backs of that time and 2 of the best announcers. Maybe the best announcers ever without fail. Classic. They were the voice of football really, iconic.
Pat Summerall and John Maddon "we havent seen a team score a single touchdown on this defense all season". This defense was utterly dominating in a way we haven't seen since, outscouring the opponents' offense in many games. Yes, there were some great defenses statistically but this team was so much more dominating then the stats even indicate. Great hits on Dickerson and Ellard. Hard to overstate the impact this team had on the city of Chicago, everyone in the whole city was watching the games on Sunday
I wasnt born until 1988 so I never got to witness this live, but it just gives me goosebumps with how loud and rowdy the fans are! I don't think we will ever hear it like that again. The game also seemed a million times faster!
I'm not sure what it is about how they shot the game, by comparison, today, but if you've ever been on a sideline, this gives you an idea of the level of violence and bad intentions in the air. Today, the game appears to be glossed over by all of the upgraded production quality.
The 4th Quarter fumble return for a TD by Wilbur Marshall was one of the most exciting moments in the history of Chicago sports. It marked the end of 20+ years of suffering by Chicago teams chasing championships.
I was a senior in high school in 1985 when this game was played. So many of these names will go down in history. Amazing to see Singletary, Ditka and of course the legendary Walter Payton. I miss these days
Madden and Summerall made each game even better with their amazing coverage. Rest in peace John Madden… You will go down in history and we will never forget you
Life doesn’t get much better watching this 85 Bear team annihilate other teams. John M and Pat S are incredible. They make the game so interesting to hear and watch
Remember how many times the Bears got the "#1 Announcing Team" that Seaaon AND in 1986?!? It was absolutely crazy! The Bears had Summeral and Madden 9 times that season, not including Playoffs! And they were on Monday Night Football 2 or 3 times that Season as well, so the Bears had Summeral and Madden for about 75% of their braodcasts!
I played hockey the day this game was played...I couldn't concentrate on my game early cuz I wanted to know how my Bears were doing...once it was 10-0 I figured it was already over and I ended up scoring 2 goals and we won the game...then of course celebrated after the Bears game...great memories

Not really, it shows the obvious. The D was keying on Dickerson because no one was afraid of Brock at QB. Btw Dickerson ran right over Mr. bad ass in 83, 84, and 86. So yeah he had an ugly game here, but vs the meat of the 83-86 Bears D he was 3-1 and 100+ yards in each win. Bears won when it counted though, no one was stopping them in '85, and Miami, the only team to figure them out, got upset by undermatched NE in the playoffs.
Matthew Lepka Agree Mathew. The other 3 dip shits act like my comment is some kind of insult to Dickerson . All I said was it was a good hit, which it was and Singletary was a great player (HOF). The Bears were an awesome team that year. Think the Rams came out with a little respect. Something like Bears 23 to 10. You know the Rams have always generally had pretty good teams over the years. Back then and still do. But after the Lions beat them. This year I was praying so much they would beat the 49s and a Superbowl. Rams worst enemy was they could get by Fran Tarkington in the 1970s and Joe Montana in the 1980s. Same Division. The game has changed so much over the years. With free agency. Players can play were they want. Seems like if I remember correctly when the Rams played in the Colosseum was a large fan base. Weird now you can go to play out there it's like. 60 to 40. Fan Base.

You're not alone. The current NFL is not a good product unlike the 80s and 90s.

@Avingay Anfordstay these playoffs were totally setup for Chicago to dominate. The giants were not ready yet and the Rams didn't have a quarterback until they drafted Jim Everett.
No doubt about the Bears in 1985, but I'll go with the Steelers in '76.

it's an awesome memory! Agree Mathew. The other 3 dip shits act like my comment is some kind of insult to Dickerson . All I said was it was a good hit, which it was and Singletary was a great player (HOF). Some losers just look for somewhere to start shit when there’s no reason to. Crawl back down into your parents basement and think next time before you start typing.
@@mikeinindy2856 You are asking people to pay attention to what you say. That is asking WAY too much of many people. Don't get upset when people misinterpret what you say, it happens all the time and you can't expect anymore than what happens.
I'm from Winnipeg 🇨🇦 it's Awesome to see CFL & Winnipeg Blue Bomber legend Ralph "Dieter" Brock in the NFC title game👍 to bad it's against the '85 Bears.
I'm from close to Hamilton and remember when we got Brock from the Blue Bombers in '83...Lost to Winnipeg in the '84 Grey Cup. this was the last game Brock ever played. Even though I'm a Bears fan, I remember that last sack/ fumble recovery hoping he was OK...Oskee Wee Wee!!!
Same here Neil. He was fun to watch at the old Stadium!
Thanks to my Navy MWR office I put my name on a list and I got tickets to this game with my brother Chuck we watched from the upper nose bleed section. Best game ever for me in my life in America 🇺🇸 where we live free or Die.
Da Bears Of 85! GOAT
No they were the B.E.A.R. Best Ever All Real.
Whats a goat to a bear......
Get off that weak trendy saying already....
Goats get sacrificed
@@geeram516 Wow, B.E.A.R.? That was a reach
@@joehackel8087 Oh not at all. I came up with that one. Pass it on.
I.p.o
I've been a Ram since 1969 11 years old. I remember this game. But it was the 86 defense of the Bears. I pretty much knew they were not going to have much of a chance.
60 to 40. Fan Base.
Man I miss Pat and John announcing. When football was a great sport.
Hahaha
@@mikedrew8718 Football is still the best sport in the world all sports today have their problems
@@davidfox9947 but back then football was different
What a time that was. Tackling on concrete. You could hear the band playing. Presentation of trophy in the locker room. $18,000 bonus for winning the game. Great memories growing up before things got so big and expensive and ridiculous.
How is tackling on concrete a good time. That unnecessarily injures players
12th Man Pride Lol only part of football I never understood during this time period.
Bring back The Bear Down Band!
@@sreepam9480 Artificial turf was brutal on the players and it was just ugly to look at. It's one of those things about sports of the '80s that I absolutely do not miss, along with not having the score and clock on-screen at all times (my parents were BEGGING for a continuous score bug for as long as I've been alive, way before FOX actually implemented it).
@sreepam9480
Relax snowflake preacher. No one has to play on it anymore.
Man do I miss this. Not just the unparalleled gameplay of the fearsome ‘85 Bears - but the pace of the game, the commitment of the players, the intimacy of the stadium, and the way this team became heroes and a cultural phenomenon. There’s nothing like this anymore.
The first thing I noticed was the pace, really lets the announcers do their jobs.
Great memories. Was in college at the time and there was no doubt at the end of the 1985 season that the Bears were a team of destiny. Love the excitement in the stands. Don't see much of that these days.
I don't know what to say
I was stationed near Northern California up till mid season and spent the rest of the season stationed in South Korea, It was great to be able to see this game thanks to Armed Forces Television. Bear weather, and John Madden, it just didn't get any better back in those days.
Thanks for showing this game.
The season was 1985, but that game was played on 1-12-1986. I'm old and was a bit confused and was thinking that was when the Bears lost to SF the year before and didn't want to watch that depressing game.
