If this toilet valve repair fails, then you likely need to escalate your toilet valve fix into an outright toilet valve replace job. You first get the Fluidmaster toilet valve replacement kit, then proceed with your new toilet valve installation as shown i this video. this is all because you have a toilet not filling up with water fast enough.

    Jeff...My water level in my toilet is rising to the top of the overflow tube. My fill valve is the works the same way as the Fluidmaster and is working fine, but i need to LOWER the at rest water level to stop the continuous overflow. I found info saying i need to lower the water level control gizmo by turning it counterclockwise. I started to do that with a screwdriver but it is resisting me. Norm, that is a supposed water-saving feature called a roller clamp. I left it untouched on this setup. For it's proper usage the instructions tell you this:
      Flush toilet - if bowl appears full, but continues to fill, valve
      may be overfilling bowl. Adjust water level as follows:
      A. Fill bowl with gallon of water & wait for it to recede and stop.
      B. Mark water level with pencil and flush toilet. If the water refills
      above line, water level is too high, if water stops filling below pencil
      line, water is too low.
      C.Adjust water by pushing down and rolling the dial with thumb on
      roller clamp. “0” means no refill.

      Whenever I install a new flapper I try to feel around in the bottom of the tank for how the top of the whole feels with the flapper sits if it's slimy it might need to be cleaned and it might be allowing water to leak out of it.
      You might have to stand there and wait and watch it as it happens and see if the water level is going down what I've done before is I'll make a mark on the back of the tank and see if the water level is dropping over 1015 minutes and see how much you are losing. If you hear any noise at all coming from that tank it should be completely silent but if you hear any noise it means there is a leak. The toilet should sit there and not make a single sound no matter how minute.

    Do you like shark bites over compression fittings?

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  2 роки тому

      I have played with shark bites a few times and I will only use them as an emergency or temporary connection while I go and get the real parts, or if it must be used for example on old illegal Poly butylene piping, I will only use them outside the wall so you could see if there was ever a leak. In my opinion both the snap in fitting and the shark bites are likely the same amount of quality. But I have always preferred the compression fitting the best because they are pretty perfect as long as you install them correctly and tighten them up properly

  • @markallan9050
    @markallan9050 5 років тому +1

    The shutoff valve itself isnt illegal however the polybutylene pipe is. If it wasnt leaking, theres no real reason for you to change the shutoff valve without changing the pipe. Just my opinion as a red seal journeyman plumber from canada. Info on fill valve was good though. Just mentioning most brass valves like that can be left alone as long as they arent the acetyl type. Not sure of the codes in your area though. Nonetheless, good video

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому +2

      Mark: I changed the old shutoff gate valve because it was dripping. Sometimes these old valves once you shut them off and turn them back off they leak at old plastic fitting inside. I hate gate valves. You'll also notice I changed it to a much better ball valve right angle stop, any excuse I get to change out a 27 year builder's special garbage water shut valve off, I will do it. I also plan one day to remove all the polyethylene piping in our house and replace with copper.

    • @markallan9050
      @markallan9050 5 років тому

      @@jeffostroff yes, the ball valves are better than the globe valves that builders usually use. Another trick you can use is shutting off the water to the house and using a retrofit shutoff valve temporarily to isolate the one fixture.

    • @johnkrim8377
      @johnkrim8377 5 років тому

      Wrong about the valve that was removed, it is not a gate valve it is a 1/2" x 3/8 o.d. angle compression stop , evidently he doesn't know what a gate valve is or looks like!

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому

      @@johnkrim8377 Our favorite OCD troll is back, again, your point is moot because no one cares. Brasscraft actually calls it a "Multi-Turn Valve" Many of us down here in Florida loosely refer to it as gate valve, because you have to keep spinning the valve handle to make the water shut off, just like a gate valve, so this operates exactly like a gate valve operates. I realize you have a problem understanding the similarities, but go study op on the operation of gate valves, and you'll see the spinning action of the compression multi-turn handle is strikingly similar to the gate valve, hence that's why many people have nicknamed them gate valves.. So with all our compression valve change outs done here most people either refer to them as gate valve or 1/4 turn ball valve. Yes, we know it's compression, because duh, we install them. Yes we know it's 1/2" x 3/8 OD, but no one here calls them like you did, it's a mouthful. If I tell someone switch out that gate valve with a ball valve, they know exactly what to do. Are you going to harp all over someone who applies a Curad on their finger cut, but calls it a Band-Aid? You forgot to take your OCD medicine today. Why don't go troll Kim Kardashian's channel, I'm sure you'll find a lot of legit errors over there that you can point out.

    • @markallan9050
      @markallan9050 5 років тому

      @@jeffostroff he does have a point but because there are a quadrillion different types of valves in the industry many operate with similar principals terms often get interchanged. Also terminology changes based on where you work. Technically here where im at we would classify a multi turn shutoff as a globe valve of sorts, or a compression valve.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  2 роки тому +1

      I showed it after the Fluidmaster repair, because quite often people end up having to change their water shut off valve due to age and leaking once they exercise the old valve to shut it off. In this case, the stub out pipe from the wall was not copper, it was the now-banned polybutylene piping which many houses have, so this was valuable extra video for someone in that situation.

      No flapper has ever lasted more than a year in our house, on all 3 toilets. They make them too thin, and so they get too floppy, not rigid enough. Also our water looks nice and clear, but sometimes deposits just collect on the flapper, if they feel slimy, you take them out, wash them off with soap, put them back, they do OK a few months longer, then problem comes back.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому +1

      Even better than the adjustable is the Rigid One Stop wrench that I linked to above, you use the stem of the smaller wrench to stick into the 1/4" valve, I just did not show it like this in the video, because most people might have channel locks but not this wrench. But you can see I held it relatively steady without major scratches. I don't let the channel lock move, that's the key to success. Keep those teeth still so that they grip, not scratch.

  • @johnkrim8377
    @johnkrim8377 5 років тому +1

    As the title of the video says your going to repair or replace the fill valve. So after flushing it out with no difference you used the excuse that it's 13 years old so your going to change it only because you had no idea that installing a new seal would have returned it to full flow. I see your still using toothed channel locks to grab finished chrome .

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  5 років тому

      I realize your OCD has gotten the better of you and you want to try to nit pick everything someone does to satisfy some internal desire of yours, but you could not be more wrong. Everyone knows you can replace seals and rings, but there's still no guarantee the problem will be fixed. Since you'r not an engineer, let me clue yo in to a phenomenon we engineers have to deal with called plastic flow and micro cracks. A molded plastic piece can change its shape over time, the plastic is actually flowing although you don't see it. The handyman fix is always to rebuild something, take it apart and rebuild it. Then it still fails. My policy is don't rebuild, replace with new. Jut like many auto mechanics won't use rebuilt parts, because they are likely to fail.

    • @johnkrim8377
