Just diving in on Overdrive. I’m a fan of the “middle ground” approach. I like Alpha Strike play for the lack of hex movement and a more free form level of play. I like the crunchy details of classic. Overdrive seems like it will be the sweet spot that I dream of. Well done and thanks for the effort with it!
Hey boys, thanks for posting these. This seems EXACTLY what I've been looking for in Battletech, as well as many friends. Classic is too much everything for us, yes AS doesn't feel like you're in a mech - you're just rolling for numbers. Didn't this used to be behind your Patreon wall? Is there more that still is? I recall something from quite a while back, and was going to dig in more, but never got around to it. Or is it all in your public DLs. Thank you again for the system and equally for the effort in the vids.
Thanks! Glad you agree it hits the sweet spot. We did have it as a patron exclusive a while back, but made all the “core stuff” available to everyone for free. There are still some things that are patron only perks - notably the weapons and equipment that is not in MechWarrior: Destiny, and thus required some “house” rules. Still all of these conversion rules are free in the doc so anyone could do it by hand - but the online builder will unlock these things in the drop downs for patrons.
@DeathfromAboveWargaming More than fair. Lots of work went into it I'm sure. I'll hop on Patreon after I give the game a whirl and see how it is. Thanks once more.
Sounds great, we appreciate it!!! The real “perk” of patreon (imo) is the megamek integration - you can quickly import .mtf (and other) files and it will load and convert everything for you in one click
This rule set is shaping up to be more tasty than the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving that I am still eating. Honestly, it's looking like Override might do away of many of my issues with the Classic BT and Alpha Strike rule sets.
That is the goal. And I actually lectured my wife for not ordering a turkey big enough to support 1+ months of left overs. Let’s hope she never makes that mistake again.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Indeed! Im super hype to watch through it and then try and get a few people in the different play groups here to try it out. Out of curiosity, will you guys be making all 6 into a playlist at somepoint?
Thank you. This makes it easier to convert . I was trying to change from classic to Destiny and I was having so many issues. Still haven't found people near me to play, but this I think will make it easier.
Excellent video! I look forward to having the complete series to reference. It is possible that the House Master will switch from Alpha Strike to Override given how much work you guys have put into it. The House Master Approves! And have some Fryz with that!
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Will there be information how to create a sheet for a Mech in one of the Videos ? PS: I hope we get a Battlelytics of the Clan Warhammer C3 ( A Clan Mashine from the Golden Age of the Clans that has a Revival in the IlClan Era through Wolf Dragoon´s)
Yes - part 5, Force Building will go over this. The tool is fairly intuitive - free to use. Just input the Classic/Total Warfare numbers and equipment, or import directly from megamek if you are a patron.
After playing override, I felt that the marriage between BTC and AS is great but there’s things in the relationship to iron out. The good: It drastically reduces the number of ticks of mechs to be simplified, quantity speaking. Its rules flow similarly with classic with some AS elements included so it’s easy to pick up and go. The not so good: The gameplay time is still the same as classic so don’t expect it to be fast paced. I wasn’t a fan of the cluster dice rule and feel that it should stick with a chart. Heat is very punishing; I feel that it should be scaled up a little. These are just my impressions having played one game though.
I like the idea of a middle ground Battletech game. I see a lot of the semi-superfluous dice rolls in Classic, especially re-rolling, but Alpha Strike is a tad too light like. Even with the multiple attacks optional rule. Override seems like a good middle ground. Keeping the heat management and hit locations of Classic. While cutting much of what I consider mostly filler. One question, I noticed on the hit location chart that a roll of a 2 didn't have a location. Is that a re-roll or something like superficial damage?
Thank you so much for this series. I have been wanting to get back into btech. But classic is too time consuming and Alpha is too simplified for me. I had been eyeing Override for a while now. But have not tried yet cause I was waiting for a better walkthrough of the system. This rocks!
As a "new" tabletop player that doesnt have time to play outside of with my ten year old son after a year i still love tutorial vids like this & im curious to get your take as i love Battlelytics (Despite your thoughts on the Hunchback! ;) 😉
When looking at the max damage allowed for the TIC system, do you take into account lore-adjacent reasoning such as the Hunchback 4P's 6x medium lasers 'replacing' the AC20? Either way, this looks to be a really fun system; a good balance between the two established systems. Great video, as always!
We adjusted it down (from 10 to 7 to 5) after playtesting and feedback - we didn’t look too closely at the lore for this one beyond the concept of TICs!
Huh. Normally I have a knee-jerk reaction against 'simplified' rulesets like Alpha Strike, but I have to admit this looks a lot more... practical to run in more situations than classic BT, while still maybe fitting into the same 'niche', unlike something like AS which doesn't scratch the same 'big complex machines' itch.
I would really really love to see an expansion of these explanations for VTOLs and tanks so we could play combined arms without reading those 3 rulebooks.
You don’t really need to read anything… watch a battle report or two. Vehicles move and shoot like everything else. VTOLs have a few nuances with moving vertically but there really isn’t much to it. Also pop into our discord - lots of people there can help. We may get to a video down the road on vehicles, but it is 90% redundant.
There are tons of time sinks in Classic - too many to list here and no, they are not solvable with dice boxes-of-death and memorizing the tables. They are not individually bad but quickly add together and make it exhausting to play just a lance vs lance sized game.
You and I are on the same page. I think you said it well though - less about the individual things and more about when you put them all together. Alpha Strike otoh plays very quickly but at the expense of some of what we love. That is what caught my eye initially with the MechWarrior Destiny combat system - best of both!
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Took less than that to teach my 8yr old nephew & his friend. & no QSR in the late 90s, no rules held back. It's just a a buncha math & charts afterall. Loving Override, been playing it for a while now and it really hits the spot for speed of play and detail in mech loadout :D fantastic work!!
Thanks!! We are happy to hear it!
Sounds very interesting. Looking forward to hearing more of a faster mode that still holds the feel of classic hex tabletop

Coolest name ever. Nice change up from Destiny which was confusing.

A 2 is a floating through-armor critical… so reroll location (another 2 means torso) and then roll to confirm a critical.
