Ok, now it’s my turn to be watching a blondieinchina video and getting hungry. I would have loved that challenge and trust me, no takeaways would have been needed. I did have some good stomach real estate but happily lost some on my 1000 km walk. 😀

Interesting fact: new shanghai and shanghai night were original started by two sisters who fell out with each other. New shanghai was then revamped to new and modern furnishings by a duaghter in law of one of the sisters who studied finance but later quit her job to manage the family business.

2 common possibilities when Chinese restaurants sharing the same name.
If the new shop is opened far from the original outlet, it could be the co-owner/siblings or the apprentice expanding the business on good terms.
If the new shop is just next door, it could be there is a conflict between the co-owners/siblings/apprentice and one is trying to screw the other up by opening a "New (shop name)".

The last place you went to was a family favourite restaurant for eating Shanghainese cuisine in Ashfield. Our family always loved both the xiaolongbao and the pan-fried dumplings and pan-fried buns in that place too. It may not be heavily crowded but the food is the best of the Shanghainese restaurants we have had in Ashfield to-date.

  • @JV-ee1mc

I live in Ashfield, and I have to say that while New Shanghai had the speediest service, it tends to be busier and it’s not unusual to find a line outside. So for a quick meal during lunch or dinner hours, I would try the other places.
For a late night xiao long bao fix, Shanghai Night lives up to its name. They’re open until 11pm every day.
And I’ve always overlooked Flavour Shanghai but will definitely try it now after your ratings. We love an underdog story! Haha

if theres 225 items on the menu, doesnt that bring into question their freshness? how can a small restaurant maintain the ingredients to prepare 225 different dishes on demand in adequate supply?
also speed is not always good. if a restaurant delivers a dish suspiciously fast, my first thought is that it is precooked

New Shanghai night is probably run by the protégé of the old Shanghai night. You can tell from they way they priced the dumplings and the location. This happens a lot for Chinese businesses (not only in FNB).
I reckon the master and student got into an argument and the student just opened up his own. The similarly in the name is to show that the recipe is (almost) the same and if you've had it in the old place back then, you'll get the same stuff here. Not so much about creativity in the name.
If (hypothetically) you see a restaurant called Donald McRonald, you could almost certainly tell what kind of food they serve

4 different xiaolongbao restaurants all within the same proximity? Great for the innovation and the interest of the customer, but not ideal for the owners, unless they really love competition.

New Shanghai is a pretty big franchise across Australia, there’s a few in Sydney and other cities like Brisbane. What really surprised me though was going to Shanghai and actually finding the New Shanghai restaurant! Obviously it’s a super generic name so I was super suspicious it wasn’t actually the same franchise, but the logo was the exact same and the menu even mentioned their stores in Australia. Just like here the ambience in the Shanghai restaurant was pretty fancy, definitely more of a department store restaurant than a small street stall. Their xiao long bao were also better in their Shanghai restaurant 😂

Hi,Blondie. I really recommend you to go to the Homeway in Burwood and try their Henan lamb soup noodle. I can promise you will be amazed. Henan is my hometown, also know as the cradle of Chinese civilization.

Guys, try xiaolongbao in Lanzhou Beef Noodle, Westfield Bondi. The best I ever tried in Sydney. I'm from Shanghai btw, and never like those restaurants with a name of Shanghai :)
