Yes, neighbours in Hutong are the best! I grew up in Hutong, we shared food, they took care of me when my parents were not home, you didn’t even have to lock the door when going out, coz nothing could escape from your neighbour’s eyes🤣
The rice rolls prepared with a bunch of sauces is 混酱肠粉. I had it in Hong Kong and was initially confused by the different flavors but then quickly came to love it!
I think the more common name for it is 街邊腸粉/街頭腸粉 or something along that line. Usually the regular 腸粉 in a restaurant have meat (pork, chicken or beef) or shrimp in them. The Street version is more or less kind of street snack with a mixed of Hoi Sen and Seasame source, hence it comes with the big "toothpick" because you don't have chopstick when you are on the street. The place you went to (like many places in Hong Kong) love to play with the pronounciation that sound like something humorous or swear word. Mix source 混酱 has the same pronouciation as 混帳 which transliterated to "mixed accounts" but is use colloquially express bullcrap or nonsense, yeah accounting swear words, how stereotypical Asian can one get 🤣. Many time, especially in Hong Kong Style (western food) restaurant the menu item uses swear words sounding item. eg. A drink that mix Ribena and 7up is call 利賓七(Riben-7) but it sound like "You stupid d**k" in cantonese. Some get offended by the bawdy humor, most laugh it off.
this reminds me of the A Yi(aunt) that offered you the Hot water back then. The bonding between people, wherever they are from, is always the most touching thing in the world. Covid may distants people, but kindness surely bring them closer and closer.
It may feel hard to cope with the pandemic in life, but glad to hear that you are trying to stay smooth as a food vlogger/blogger, Miss Amy. Keep it up the pace. 💖

Wow, it never occurred to me that your regular diet would be largely vegetarian/vegan, but that does make sense. I admit to marveling over how you stayed in such good shape when eating so well in the videos. :D And it's unusual to find someone with a mainly veggie diet who will also eat all the "parts" you do! *LOL* Loved this little look into your off-camera life....thanks for sharing!
Also a thing I would go buy in case of an eventual lockdown: a proper tea set for gong fu brewing and some nice varieties of Oolong and Pu'er tea. I recently got into the gongfu cha game and it has been so great for calming down and feels like a meditative practice. Like you I usually prefer running / walking over actually meditating. Hope though there wont be any lockdown ofc :)

Hi Amy, that rice roll is called 腸粉(肠粉)and you can buy them in wet markets in HK. The ones you ate in the video are usually eaten as a snack or breakfast in snack shops or at home. But in the yum cha places, you eat rice rolls that are thicker and with meat or prawns or a 油条 which is called 炸兩.
Yay Brandon Sanderson! This was a great peak into your daily routine - thanks! I'm studying Chinese right now and daydreaming about getting to travel someday, and your videos are such an inspiration
Hi Amy, the rice roll you had is usually called 斋肠 (plain rice roll), as opposed to rice roll with stuff inside. Usually you can choose from a number of sauces, including soy sauce, sesame sauce, seafood sauce and spicy sauce. XO sauce fried rice roll is also a really good dish. Please try it some time.
Hey Amy, thanks for your videos. Your fluent Mandarin gave me new motivation to learn Cantonese more seriously, just wanted to tell you thanks for that :)

It's inspiring that you take care of your mental health and that you are able to be so lively and fun even when you have anxiety issues. I know this firsthand -- I also have anxiety issues, but generally speaking nobody knows it but me. Good job!
Thank you for your lovely videos Amy! By the way, the "rice rolls with stuff on it" is called 猪肠粉, which is literally translated as "pig intestine roll" because of how it looks ;)
often shorten to 腸粉, can be plain or filled with beef, char siu or prawns as in Yum Cha. Often plain with peanut sauce, hoisin sauce + soy sauce is my favourite. The best one are freshly steam and served on the spot
The tastes like Chinese cuisine from back home topic is quite Interesting Lol coming from Italy, before moving to China 3 years ago, Chinese food was very broadly represented in my mind by Shanghai/Zhejiang cuisine, because most of the Chinese immigrants at that time came form Wenzhou 😄 there’s the occasional Cantonese but a lot of Italians don’t associate Chinese food with char siu, baozaifan, or even dim sum at all (which is a pity!). In 2022 of course things are different, at least in major cities.
I love your videos. good quality and always happy. actually, I'm under my hotel quarantine in Nanjing for 7 days. I love to watch your food vlog and put them play on my TV. It can make me not feel alone and think about what kind of food I will eat after release.

Thanks for the Taobao recommendation. We live in Macau and physical English books are not hard to find but expensive. I just ordered the Chronical of Narnia for my 10 year old thanks to you.

Very impressive, especially to the fridge! But just kindly remind, maybe to the sweet potatoes and carrots, you can just leave them with a cool and dry places in your room, cause the fridge may speed up for going bad, and move them out of the fridge can make more room for the greens, right? And i saw you just put bowls of food directly into the fridge without a cover, chances are, many bios are in the fridge and most of them are not that friendly, like Listeria monocyte genes, my suggestion is can you cover something on the bowls, like a plastic wrap or juts place a plate on the bowl. Looking forward to meet you somewhere in Beijing!!!
8:33 The problem with having too many physical books is the amount of physical space they occupy and hassle when moving apartments. Do you keep them, sell them, give them away or throw them away once you've done reading them? That's why I still prefer my Kindle.
I was born and raised in Beijing. It was kind of funny that I've never tried Cantonese dishes till I moved to Sydney. So eating Cantonese dishes remains me of the good old days of leaving in Hurstville, :D
Rice Rolls: 腸粉. If you do make your way to South East Asia (SG and MY), we call it 豬腸粉. The main difference is that the Cantonese Style would sometimes come with Fillings such as Char Siew, Prawns, Eggs and etc. Whereas in SEA, it is usually served without filling but with different types of sauces. You can have it with Sweet Sauce, oil, and light soy sauce. And sometimes you can have it drenched in Curry. And the Sauce / Gravy / Soup with rice is oh so good. Which is one of the reasons Rice is great.
In China, the rice rolls in the video just called 猪肠粉😂,which is the same as it in South East Asia. The 猪肠粉 in Guangdong and in South East Asia is the same, but with different sauces. As for 肠粉, or more precisely, 拉肠粉/布拉肠粉, is literally a different kind of food, which is exactly what you described in the comment: with the filling such as prok, beef, egg and etc.
Yeah, I asked that question too, and was wondering whether you had a high metabolism rate, although I do remember you saying you used to do fitness videos. I'd love to see another vegan episode, preferably in vegan restaurants. I'm sure one more of those episodes won't ruin your fanbase. Those rice rolls are nice, but I much prefer those with youtiao inside, called zha liang. Your home looks very cozy, not what some people imagine a hutong to be.
Amy, Food in Beijing is good but not the same as Cantonese food. Claypot rice is really good and the other one is steam rice rolls. Steam rice rolls can come with beef, shrimp, scallop, char siu, or just plain Steam rice rolls with soy sauce. Rice rolls are more common here in CA because we can get that from almost every dim sum restaurant. As for the claypot rice, you have to look for specific restaurants, I think most of them are in or near a Chinatown. @14:02, that beef fried rice noodle looks a bit different but I have to try it before I can say if it is good or not. @15:30, that is rice rolls in hoisin sauce and hot oil. I prefer the plain rice rolls with special soy sauce.
It should be quite tough for you food vloggers now that it is hard to travel around China due to the Covid situation. Hope things will get better soon, and I bet Beijing has lots of interesting foods and places to offer too.
Rice noodle roll is "cheong fun" which is what the Cantonese call it. What you had was the plain variety which usually has a bit peanut butter sauce as well.
干炒牛河, as a Hker, it's hard to get a good one, it has to be fried with a non stick wok with intense heat, definitely not a non stick fry pan which emits toxic fume when heated to high temperature. And it's very greasy, so I will only share it with someone else. But it's still my favourite, I grow up with it.
The Mayver's peanut butter in China is so surprisingly expensive! We have Mayvers peanut butter at just about any supermarket here in Singapore and it only costs something like $6 to $7?? (SGD and AUD is about the same). Though the cashew / almond butter options are more expensive and it comes in a smaller jar
@@secar6742 Lol thats untrue nut butters are good fats like fatty fish, olive oil and avocadoes. Sesame paste is also similar to nut butter anyway and its popular in Chinese cuisine.
I used to eat the exact breakfast like yours for 3 or more years until I switched to IF. This cooked oatmeal breakfast indeed helps with weight and health

Food in Beijing is good but not the same as Cantonese food.
Great video! And what a nice and cozy apartment!
It should be quite tough for you food vloggers now that it is hard to travel around China due to the Covid situation. Hope things will get better soon, and I bet Beijing has lots of interesting foods and places to offer too.
Such cool neighbors! Daily vlogger, food vlogger, I think any video you do will be great.
this is so amazing, looking forward to the new video notification already
Really like the positive energy in your videos. Keep it up.👍
Rice noodle roll is "cheong fun" which is what the Cantonese call it. What you had was the plain variety which usually has a bit peanut butter sauce as well.
“Come with me on my walk and hear about my poop story” haha😂 that escalated quickly.
ALSO so happy you’re a fantasy reader! Sarah J Mass is the best !!!
Because basically few people in China eat peanut butter because of the high oil content, which can easily cause cardiovascular disease.
This cooked oatmeal breakfast indeed helps with weight and health
the part with the hutong toilet cracks me up, you are very good at telling stories.
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing the snippets of your life in Beijing ❤
watching your vlog relaxes me. it's truly awesome and relaxing
Stay safe Amy. Love your content.
I love your healthy lifestyle and your home is very cosy.
Take care Amy. I’ve prepared tons of food for the next 2 months. Don’t want to take any risks as Beijing is in a really bad situation now.
Those Cantonese food, man it does feel like home. 干炒牛河can't go wrong, it's the 1 dish for me to determine is that a good restaurant.
Nice to see Nico and Jack on the channel again.
