It’s very possible that the Queen was jealous, the Queen was a marvelous public servant in her role, which was difficult. She gave so much to the role, but the Queen probably thought it she could have the political freedom of being a Minister would have more than her rather ceremonial role of being queen. MT however was SO out of her element in the rich snobby world of parlour games, outdoors, and extravagance. MT is working class, the Queen from wealth.
It is UNREAL how well Gillian embodies Thatcher. If Gillian doesn't win every award she can from this role, there is no justice. She plays the best Thatcher I've ever seen.
The Queen actually went to Thatchers funeral despite not going to any other PMs ones. They must have had a good relationship despite political disagreements.
For all the talk of the Queen not getting on with Margaret Thatcher, which might be somewhat true based on the fact Margaret Thatcher was doing some pretty radical things. But post her resignation she never showed signs of dislike quite the opposite, she attended her 70th and 80th birthdays. Something she certainly never had to do. She also made her a Knight of the Garter very quickly. Something she has not done for Tony Blair or Gordon Brown. She also gave the go ahead for her public funeral and chose to attend, the first funeral of PM she has attended since Churchill.
Order of Merit, Order of the Garter, Ceremonial funeral and a heredity baronetcy for Denis; strange the Queen would do this for a PM she didnt get on with! Its not like she has offered so much to any other recent PM. I think the dislike between them was overblown for narrative reason or perhaps the personal and political views of the show runners.
Probaly because thatcher was a woman amongst men in politics. In those days that took a lot of courage , the queen herself was in similiar circumstances and they probaly understood the sacrifices they both made
Am I alone in disliking the narrator repeatedly saying "Thatcher" rather than "Mrs Thatcher". It sounds a bit disrespectful. In any case surely "Thatcher" is Denis Thatcher?! She also, like so many British people, mispronounces "apartheid". The vowel sound of the last syllable should be as in "eight", not as in "tide".
What a stunning performance by Gillian Anderson. The voice, the mannerisms, the facial expressions, you really got a sense she put everything into it. The Queen represents an older, more moderate, more noblesse oblige conservatism which IMHO came into conflict with Margaret Thatcher's neoconservatism which saw shrinking the State as the only priority above everything else.
If the queen could vote she probably would have been a wet in the Tory party or a blairite of the labour party. The good old queen mum would have been a staunch Tory.

Watching Gillian play Thatcher was fascinating cuz I think she has strong feelings about Thatcher and that informed her ability to create a fully realised character. Really good
Honestly i know I'm alone but i found Gillians performance way over the top. The voice sounded like she smoked 60 cigars a day and came back from the dead.
But at the end, Queen Elizabeth reward Tatcher with the medal of Merit. She even put it on Thatcher by herself during last audience before Tatcher step down. Season 4 Of The Crown is about Margeret Tatcher and Princess Diana. And i bet on season 5, it will be more about Diana.
The Queen put aside their differences to acknowledge Thatcher was the first female PM. She was strong to do so because if i was her, i probably be like... BYEEEE!
As the program unfolds, you have to wonder that the Queen doesn't take her responsibilities too seriously. A Constitutional Monarchy leaves the actual power in the hands of the Prime Minister and Parliament with the Queen as essentially a figurehead.with limited responsibilities. Responsibilities mostly of show and not substance.
The British monarchy hasn't had any real power since Queen Victoria died in 1901. Even then Queen Victoria had more power of personality than power of the Crown.
@@n.d.m.515 I would think with the German speaking Hoverians, the role of a Prime Minister became important, since the Monarch could not communicate in English.
They had a great mutual respect. HMQ was baffled by MT initially, as she had never encountered such a strong female political force. However, towards the end of Thatcher's premiership, they developed a warmer relationship. She did indeed award her the Order of Merit, but more tellingly, HMQ changed the rules that only royal ladies can be the Order of the Garter so that Thatcher could be admitted to the highest order of chivalry in the UK, and totally in the Queen's personal gift.
And this rocky relationship is what makes her Order of Merit truly earned. Despite her stern resolve and cold demeanor, she loved her country and wanted it to flourish.
Hey folks. You can disagree with people and friends , even really get pissed off at them , it doesn't mean you do not like them , if I thought that way I would have no one !
"...and gave funds to countries with dictatorshis she wanted no association with." But Pinochet was okay? Guess it's only dictators Thatcher wasn't partial to.
This "tension" is a total fabrication. Thatcher was appointed Lady of the Garter and awarded the Order of Merit, the highest honour in the land and the exclusive gift of the Sovereign. Furthermore HM the Queen attended The Baroness Thatchers funeral, only the second PM to receive such honour since Winston Churchill himself. Scarcely the actions of one with intense dislike for the other.

3:12 i mean why should the Queen take credit for something Margaret did ? Shes the one ruling the country shes the one that won the war and should get all the honours
Remember that the UK don't have a written constitution. They have tradition and bills. By not following tradition, Thatcher effectively opposed the Queen and implied that royalty was not necessary any more (which is a major divisive issue in the UK and worldwide). The problem is she should have done her duty, whether she wanted to or not.
Because 1.) the Queen, not Thatcher is commander in chief of the Armed Forces and 2.) Thatcher shouldn’t, the generals and admirals in the army and navy should get the credit
So many comments about the Queen / Thatcher relationship. The facts are:- 1. The two did not always see eye to eye and caught. 2. The Queen never understood why Thatcher always sat at the edge of her chair and is alleged to have called her “ That woman “ and “ Has she keeled over again?! “ 3. Thatcher was brought up to revere The Monarchy and is alleged to have been awe of the position of the Queen. 4. They disagreed and argued over policy and the commonwealth. 5. The Queen was very concerned with the way That her was forced out of power. 6. The two women respected one another and grew closer after Thatcher left power. 7. The Queen appreciated Thatcher’s love of her country, her service to her country and her respect for The Monarchy.
Can anyone tell me if was intentional the rat on “The Crown” season 2 episode 3 at 1.40min into de episode? Jajaja it was clever so funny is when Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother was waiting by the phone

I am a devout royalist and Maggie was my favorite leader of all time. I remember the eighties with this nonsense of a rift. I thought don't make me choose, I would even become a Republican.
Yes, but when things go left the PM gets the brunt of the criticism and not the head of state. I understand the monarch is not involved in policy making, I guess Margaret Thatcher was trying to make that point and show her resentment.
There's a reason why the Queen showed up at Thatcher's funeral. Technically the Sovereign does not take part in their Prime Minister's funerals. But Lilybeth showed up for 2 of her PM's funerals: first with Winnie, and the second with Maggie. Shows the respect that she had for both PMs who saved Britain from ruin.
I bet there was enormous respect from the Queen. Thatcher rose by sheer talent, hard work and political skill to being a very consequential PM. Gillian is INCREDIBLE
I had my doubts about Gillian Anderson playing Thatcher but after watching the whole season I think she did a splendid job. I will have to watch Iron Lady again to see if she outdid the great Meryl Streep.
If the Queen hated Thatcher so much, then why did she invite her to Balmoral once a year and make MT’s funeral the only (except Winston Churchill’s) funeral of a Prime Minister she would attend
What I haven't heard anyone comment on following the release of the latest season of The Crown is how Margaret Thatcher - whom I strongly supported - sadly completely screwed up the handling of the expiration of the lease on Hong Kong's New Territories. Thatcher thought her victory in the Falklands War meant she was absolutely smarter than everyone else and she could not in anyway be told her demand to publicly renew the lease was the worst possible way to handle the situation. If she had followed the advice of her councillors Hong Kong would still be a British Crown Colony!
Yeah but that's not really the truth. The Queen showed up on Thatcher's 80th birthday and on her funeral. Protocol dictates that the Sovereign does not show up to their Prime Minister's funerals, to not show favoritism. But ERII showed up on Churchill's and Thatcher's funeral. Only the Queen and Thatcher and their husbands knew of their relationship. And unlike with Diana, they kept their feelings towards each other pretty secret.

i don't agree, I think Gillian was an amazing representation of Tatcher, the thing with Meryls performance is that the is no Meryl there at all
@@jeanbutinfrench I haven't seen the Meryl Streep movie but now I want to. Gillian Anderson is making MT interesting.
I genuinely think they both portrayed MT very well
Maybe it’s because she is british
@@simongill4715 who's british?
Gillian has nailed the role & overtook the performance of Streep. I am speechless by her voice & walks. Scully has for sure grown up as a major leading actress. Respect 👍🌹🌹🌹
Im in agreement with everyone else.....Gillian deserves the Emmy for her role here. It was absolutely brilliant and breathtaking!!
Gillian is a better Thatcher than Thatcher herself... 🤔😁
Not really. Thatcher was utterly unique.
@@MTknitter22, it was a joke, lol.
She is incredible 😍
@@MTknitter22 k
Apt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Meryl I genuinely do and I once thought her rendition of Thatcher was untoppable but Gillian has proved me wrong
And Hilary Clinton snubbed Margaret Thatcher by leaving her out of her book about "gutsy" women simply because MT was conservative. She's one of the gutsiest women in history.
It's nov 15 already now in Indonesia i want the new season NOWWW
PERIOD!!!!
Jam brp sih ka? Aku cari google katanya jam 8 pagi waktu UK tgl 15 November, skrng udh jam 4 sore dan London udh mau jam 9 tapi gue cek notif Netflix gak muncul. GAK SABAR.

@@DominicNJ73 why not?
The Queen represents an older, more moderate, more noblesse oblige conservatism which IMHO came into conflict with Margaret Thatcher's neoconservatism which saw shrinking the State as the only priority above everything else.
If the queen could vote she probably would have been a wet in the Tory party or a blairite of the labour party.
The good old queen mum would have been a staunch Tory.
@@martinjenkins5471 I mean, eh? The Queen Mother was an interesting person. She openly associated with members of the LGBTQ community but she was still a conservative woman so who knows 🤷🏻♂️
Basically these are the general synopsis per episode. Cant wait!
I thought they're actually telling the truth...
@@damunaik4 what do u mean?
Anita really has a great quality in presenting she’s so likeable why isn’t she in the tv more
Gillians voice and walk and mannerisms is really just thatcher in the flesh
Finished the season....GILLIAN better get the nomination and award👏🏾👏🏾
Why isn't there more outrage that thatchers kid was in south africa when she stood behind there not being sanctions?
I can't wait to watch The Crown
Watching Gillian play Thatcher was fascinating cuz I think she has strong feelings about Thatcher and that informed her ability to create a fully realised character. Really good
GILLIAN"S performance is perhaps the best of the whole series!!!!GIVE HER A CROWN!!!!!
I see what you did there
Gillian was so brilliant at her role that it made me hate her a Thacher lol
Who played Margaret Thatcher? I was like Damn this the Women I remember!!!
OUTSTANDING!!!
Gillian Anderson. Scully from X Files.
I think Gillian is better at being Margaret Thatcher than Meryl Streep , Jesus I thought Maggie was back there at the end 😰
If Gillian doesn’t win an Emmy for this season it’ll be daylight robbery. I will be calling the police.
I love learning new things like this while doing my morning routine 😇
Well Thatcher hated communism and liked Reagan.. No wonder she didn't mind the Grenada incident..
Honestly i know I'm alone but i found Gillians performance way over the top. The voice sounded like she smoked 60 cigars a day and came back from the dead.
Her voice was exaggerated, over the top.
And about... well, you know
Baroness Thatcher.
The Queen put aside their differences to acknowledge Thatcher was the first female PM. She was strong to do so because if i was her, i probably be like... BYEEEE!
I love Dennis and Margaret's scenes in Balmoral. Funny and realistic.
Love the Beneath The Crown series, very insightful!
Maggie opposed sanctions on apartheid for the economic hit, but had no issue doubling unemployment during her first three years in office?
What oh wow
Hey folks. You can disagree with people and friends , even really get pissed off at them , it doesn't mean you do not like them , if I thought that way I would have no one !
Give Gillian the Emmy already..!! Just episodes in and I am already convinced..
Gillian was superb her ferocity was felt without even dialog.
I wish I could speak like Anita.
Divide? Thatcher was the only prime minister whose funeral the Queen attended other than Churchill!
Is that because they're the only ones who have had state funerals? (genuine question)
Oh if i hated someone to my core, i would dress up for the occasion, attend the service, and look down on their coffin with glee.
@@ew3606 I agree. I wouldn't read too much into it. They were absolutely not friends under any definition of the word.
idk, but maybe because she was Britain's longest serving modern day PM.
@@ew3606 At the express request of the queen, yes.
"...and gave funds to countries with dictatorshis she wanted no association with." But Pinochet was okay? Guess it's only dictators Thatcher wasn't partial to.
Yes she didn't mind dictators as all, just the "wrong" kind of dictator.
@@MariaVosa The far left-wing kind, to be specific. There was a Cold War going on at the time, if you recall.
I have watched documentaries on Margaret Thatcher, and I never realize until now how much conservatives are so self centered. To think that she is the only person for the job. Power really goes to peoples brain.
Kinda like Barack
@@Warcrimeenthusiast Uhm, no. Do your research on what conservative means lad.
@@Warcrimeenthusiast Well, I am no Obama supporters at all, and I would agree if there was truth, but help me understand how Obama wanted to hold on to power when he served two terms and was gracious to the ungracious Trump when he won the election by inviting Trump and his wife to the White House and giving Trump briefings. I don't get your comparison.
@@briab6524 I was referring to the self centered bit
@@Milton754 I was referring to the self centered bit not all conservatives are self centered . I think Barak and Bill Clinton are perfect examples of that
Apparently I am in the minority here. I thought Anderson's portrayal of Thatcher was forced and affected. It bothered me so much I fast forwarded through some of the longer segments, especially when her lips and chin started wobbling from strain of keeping them in an unnatural position.
Same here. I couldnt watch her scenes. And the old voice of Thatcher was intolerable for me
Her voice was annoying
Totally agree. Her portrayal was way too much.
Thank you for presenting this for interested, curious, people. I have one request though, seems it may be an omission on someone's side of producing this video, There is no sub-text for the people who use sub-text to ensure not bother others or they are hearing correctly or the hearing disabled. I fall in between the latter two. Looking forward to actually reading what is being said, thank you for your presentation of this video and thank you in anticipation of the sub-text.
She is a perfect narrator for this.
She also not bad to look at
Watching Season 4, Episode 3 - after the scene where Margaret gets her nails painted, you see a mouse Scurry across the screen! Look closely at the floor!
I noticed that... why the mouse was there??!!
I saw that! It's where the Queen mother is waiting to hear the news about the engagement. I was like "wtf"???
I saw it too! This has been a constant complaint about B-Palace.
Thank you for these - its great to know the true history. Thats what we all want!
What Anita Rani doesn't explain is why Gillian Anderson has portrayed Thatcher in the style of Baron Silas Greenback from 80s hit cartoon, Danger Mouse....
The facts are:-
1. The two did not always see eye to eye and caught.
2. The Queen never understood why Thatcher always sat at the edge of her chair and is alleged to have called her “ That woman “ and “ Has she keeled over again?! “
I saw it!! What a detail!
Yes, it was a ongoing insider. During WWII, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother would shoot rats as aiming practice. So The Crown had a rat run across the counter in series 1(unsure of which episode, will further investigate) and also in the episode you spoke of !
Thought the same, 😃😋😅 rewatched that part to make sure it wasn’t imaginary!
Pretty sure it was intentional
I saw a mouse in episode 3 season 4.
WOW! So, we've got Thatcher to thank for the Murdoch era we are living in right now? Thanks a lot!
You've more got the old print trade unions to thank for that.
I am so happy the queen met her match
I guess you cannot have two queens at the same time.
I am a devout royalist and Maggie was my favorite leader of all time. I remember the eighties with this nonsense of a rift. I thought don't make me choose, I would even become a Republican.
the PM is not the head of state in the UK.
Yes, but when things go left the PM gets the brunt of the criticism and not the head of state. I understand the monarch is not involved in policy making, I guess Margaret Thatcher was trying to make that point and show her resentment.
Actually, the Queen and Thatcher got along okay. They respected each other, but the media always made it seem like they were at each other’s throats.
There's a reason why the Queen showed up at Thatcher's funeral. Technically the Sovereign does not take part in their Prime Minister's funerals. But Lilybeth showed up for 2 of her PM's funerals: first with Winnie, and the second with Maggie. Shows the respect that she had for both PMs who saved Britain from ruin.
thank you for your expert opinion and research, angry brazilian fanboy.
I bet there was enormous respect from the Queen. Thatcher rose by sheer talent, hard work and political skill to being a very consequential PM. Gillian is INCREDIBLE
This video is excellent! I luv the host she did such a good job explaining this complex political relationship between two strong headed women
I had my doubts about Gillian Anderson playing Thatcher but after watching the whole season I think she did a splendid job. I will have to watch Iron Lady again to see if she outdid the great Meryl Streep.
The true hero of this video is Anita, she is as captivating as Gillian's performance.
"The UK's head of state and sovereign were both female"? They are one and the same. Thatcher was head of government, the Queen is head of state.
Drama drama 😲
This presenter does a good job!👍🏽
Whatever you think of her... she was a force of nature and incredible woman
If the Queen hated Thatcher so much, then why did she invite her to Balmoral once a year and make MT’s funeral the only (except Winston Churchill’s) funeral of a Prime Minister she would attend
Is Gillian really spot on or does it seem a little bit mannered, contrived?
I have to say I have felt that as well.
If she had followed the advice of her councillors Hong Kong would still be a British Crown Colony!
i never thought jean milburn and thatcher could be portrayed by same actress ♥️♥️
Seems like a lot of stories here was not even mentioned in the series
The presenter of this show is really great and if she wrote this shes fabulous
I loved her voice
This all makes Thatcher seem fairly reasonable, tbh. Hardly no-one in the UK gives a hoot about the Commonwealth or sees the point of it.
Anita is a very good narrator/presenter
I very much look forward to this season!
Can we talk about anita rani.... She was perfect to narrate this
Gillian, you’re a brilliant actress
Honestly, the fact that the Queen didn’t like Thatcher makes her even cooler
Yeah but that's not really the truth. The Queen showed up on Thatcher's 80th birthday and on her funeral. Protocol dictates that the Sovereign does not show up to their Prime Minister's funerals, to not show favoritism. But ERII showed up on Churchill's and Thatcher's funeral. Only the Queen and Thatcher and their husbands knew of their relationship. And unlike with Diana, they kept their feelings towards each other pretty secret.
Benj Smith Productions who are you replying to, me or Ramiro?
They had mutual respect and mutual antagonism towards each others style of governing. It happens
Blunt was also a cousin through the Queen's mother.
Anderson has done an amazing job. Wow.
