While Queen Elizabeth missed her sister and mother, she almost seemed to blossom once she didn't have to be totally regal. For me, it was her spot at the 2012 Olympics, interacting with James Bond and "skydiving" was wonderful and showed her sense of humor.

One of her greatest assets, her sense of humor. I remember a lot of politicians and people who met her talked bout that in their messages. I think the last hit was Prince Philip's passing what set the mood for a farewell, she might feel the weight of time, losing the love of her life and great partner, the one who made her laugh always. When the joy of living is gone the rest is emptiness and silence.

Even after she ascended to the throne, QEII Was somewhat under the thumb of her overbearing narcissistic mother while at home she had to appease an equally strong-willed Alpha husband, and try to clean up the messes made by a discontented and rebellious sister who kept insulting dignitaries and having scandalous love affairs. The Queen Mother was not pleased about being displaced after 17 years by her 25-year-old daughter and I think she could be extraordinarily interfering. She refused to move out of Buckingham palace for some years until they were forced to turn the heat off in her apartments. That was one example of her attempting to establish a household with two Queens. The Queen Mother and Philip were not fond of each other and this dynamic just went on and on for 50 years due to the Queen Mother’s tenacious longevity. When the QM and Margaret died, Despite her grief which must’ve been terrible, Queen Elizabeth was finally liberated from being in the shadow of her mother and all of the inherent drama with her sister and she could really truly come into her own.

Both girls should have been given a much better education than what they received anyway.
There was an attempt to 'repair things' by giving some extra education to Elizabeth only later.
This was very unwise and short sighted, as Margaret was 'the spare', until Elizabeth had children.
There have been numerous cases in history, of when the 'spare' ended up with the crown.
It happened to Henry the VIII when his brother Arthur died, and to James II when Charles II died with no legitimate heirs. Both Elizabeth I and Mary were 'spares'. So was Richard III, who had not one but two older brothers. And it happened to her father, after his brother abdicated.
The education thing also caused jealousy and resentment between the sisters, which wasn't necessary.

    • @marywenzel3199

George the fifth, whom Lilibet always called grandpa England was in discussion with his ministers from as early a time When Elizabeth was three her potential future as Queen. It was well known in the halls of power that the prince of Wales was not of a mind to settle down with an appropriate wife and procreate heirs. I don’t have proof, but I wonder if it was known within the inner circle that David was incapable of Fathering children. It seems rather dis ingenuous that Elizabeth never expected to be queen, because circumstances even from her earliest childhood seemed to point to the inevitability that she would one day become her uncle’s Heir apparent. Perhaps nobody predicted the Abdication, but until 1936, Elizabeth seemed to be on a trajectory that echoed her great grandmother Victoria… The only viable heir To an uncle Who would never produce His own children. Had Edward given up Mrs. Simpson and not abdicated, Elizabeth might have had a relatively normal and obscure life until her middle age. She was in her 50s when he died in 1972, and had he been king all that time without issue, she still would become the queen, only it would’ve happened when her children were grown and her husband had had his naval career. It seems rather shortsighted or disingenuous for the royal family to claim that they had absolutely no idea that she would become queen before she was 10 years of age in 1936. It seems like it was always her destiny to wear the crown, but If her uncle had discharged his duty until his death, it would’ve happened much later. I still think it was inevitable. In that light, She could’ve been better prepared in terms of her education for her inevitable future. I think there was an element of burying their heads in the sand and assuming they had lots of time. If Edward had not abdicated, Elizabeth’s father would not have become the sovereign, but if Edward was sterile, As I am almost certain he was, Elizabeth would have become the queen no matter what.

@marywenzel3199 I didn't know that Edward was incapable of siring children? Was this Proven? I also completely agree with your statement. I don't think anyone until maybe mid 1936 really think Edward would actually abdicate.

There seems to have been some sexual dysfunction there. The relationship with Wallis fell into the BDSM category with him as her devoted slave. Whether David was shooting blanks or not, his father didn’t rate him as much.

@@aksharjadhav4134 This is the problem with the Crown, it makes everyone think they know what the Queen was like or thinking throughout her life, rather than actually reading books or doing proper research. The conversations in the Crown are entirely fictional since no one knows what was actually said by the Queen in private moments and those who do are certainly not going to tell the makers of the show. Removing the HRH from Diana was done because Diana stopped being a working royal, it wasn't a punishment and it did not make her helpless. You have to understand that the Queen does not make decisions on her own, she is a constitutional monarch and was directed by parliament on most of her actions. For instance she had no choice but to tell her sister she could only marry Peter Townsend if she gave up her royal privileges. Some of the things Diana did were not always viewed favourably when she was alive, for instance her campaign for removing mines was met with some controversy since some politicians saw it as her meddling in politics. I was there when her and Charles had a media campaign against each other and it was unpleasant on both sides and I'm sure it caused the Queen a lot of grief. It's easy to look back to see Diana as a saint, she did a lot of good but she wasn't a saint. The Queen was also not partial towards Edward VIII, she saw the documents of his support for Hitler and knew how dangerous he was. However he was her uncle and she had the affection a niece has for her uncle but that is not the same as being partial. What we all knew about the Queen is that she put her duties first and all else second and we can never know how much turmoil that caused her personally. In short, not everything is as black and white as you see in the Crown, there is always nuance to situations but that doesn't make for good television now does it.
