My Complicated Love For Digimon World | Digimon World (1999 ~ PS1) Retrospective

- How many mechanics are too many? Where do the lines blur between good and bad? Let's talk about one of the most complex, most complicated and by far one of the most interesting little RPGs I've ever touched as we tackle Digimon World (1999) for the PlayStation.
Very special thanks to my friend Nick The Game Apologist for drawing the thumbnail art!

This game has an important moral. If you treat something under your care like a piece of sh*t... it turns into one.
Thre have to have been reallydedicated patparents or maybe ven parents wanting to tell how hard it is. Becau that moral how hard it is proprly raising anything.
@@marocat4749 What?
You gotta raise a sukamon on purpose once in a while to clear up all the poo on the map.
It's pretty sad that one of my favourite digimon (SkullGreymon) requires you to be a monster towards your digimon.
HAHA such a great comment
I remember playing this as a kid and I loved it. I absolutely sucked at it and didn't understand half the mechanics but it has a special place in my heart.
Same
Me too, I've never won against any Ultimate. Beating Birdramon was the limit for me, and my dumbass kept training HP and evolving into Numemon, lol. Also, English is not my first language, so I couldn't understand what's going on, but I still kept playing.
It sure didn't help that some of those mechanics serve no apparent purpose but to inconvenience the player.
I had a magazine walkthrough, but I still could not understand how to get an Ultimate Digimon even when I met the requirements. So I sucked at that game too, but I also think this is a great game.
@@OverbiteGames Sorry, I meant Ultimate Digimon :( 😞
I have been intimidated at the idea of picking this game up again, but after this video I can safely say that feeling has not changed whatsoever.
Oh trust me, after working on this video I'm still thoroughly intimidated by it
This is one of my favorite games
Please do it, do all digimon, do collabs!
Will nick do it,.
Play Digimon World Next Order. It’s an updated PS4 spiritual successor.
I played this as a child without memory card, so i had to start over everytime. Thank you for the whole story about the game. Amazing work
We really struggled through games in the most unhinged ways back in the day lmao
I had a memory card but i never evolved a Digimon past Champion and i never recruiter more than a few Digimon and certainly never beat the game. Just liked running around trying to fight things, about half the time with a Numemon.
people often easily forget how good these opening cutscenes were back then, blew me and my friends minds playing this when it released
Ooh, metalgreymon and metalmamemon! Wooow!
As a kid in Brazil, this game was infuriating because I didn't know why things weren't happening as I pressed buttons, and only now, 25 years or so later, it finally made sense to me -- this game is just... insanely complex lmao but I genuinely adore it. I have a Mugendramon tattooed since it's my favourite digimon ever. Good stuff! I can't wait for DW2, the one I played the most, by far.
Did you know that’s the boss battle to beat the game?
I wish I could go back to time where games were so mysterious, and had so many secrets. Something about it really adds to the feeling of adventure and being in a new strange world.
you can do that today, just avoid guides and videos on those games.
@@Dante_S550_TurboIt still feel different, in the past it's like no choice, you want guide, go find a game magz or ask a friend.
well as a kid i got the game as a gift (still have it + my ps1) i couldnt figure out why i couldnt get into ogremons castle with the agumon in front of it. Turned out they fucked up the port and made the agumons not interactable so i could never finish it in the european version. I managed to beat it without guides but man was it hell lmao
@@Dante_S550_Turbo Not really. 99% of games are extremely straightforward these days.
@@MetalxLicaxPP So were games back then, the difference is they were shit at telling you anything.
Didn't check the length of this video before starting. Much like Digimon World, it was worth the surprising amount of time it ended up asking for. Thanks for making one of the most true to experience Digimon World videos that a viewer could ask for, it deserved it.
Digimon World was easily one of the best games I ever played in my life, not even just my childhood. I got it on my 8th birthday and even through confusion, struggles, and just plain being lost, I played the shit out of this game. I learned new words by reading the dialogue, I discovered new Digimon I never knew before, I had so much fun getting lost in this little world. I know it's tough, I actually didn't entirely finish it until years later, but this was in the days before the internet, so each new Digimon I digivolved into, each rng event I triggered, each branch of evolution, was all a surprise and a learning process. This is part of what's so great about this game though, the unknown and the figuring out on your own as opposed to reading a guide and just copying their steps to things. I know it can take longer this way but honestly, it was how the game was meant to be played. Otherwise you could easily run through the game and get 100% prosperity rating in like... 10-15 hours.
The depth and the simplicity of the game is what makes it so great. At the core, just training and doing what your Digimon asks of you, you can hit Ultimate levels and be able to get through the storyline slowly but surely. In depth though, you can strategize and save up items or go after certain Digimon or aim for certain builds, etc. The variety of Digimon, the achievements, the collectibles, the minigames - there's so much you can do besides just the main plot. There were some minor glitches in the original build, some things weren't perfectly translated, and ofcourse there are things that could be improved upon, but the base game was a great starting point. The reason why Digimon plummeted in popularity while things like Pokemon increased and otherwise stayed popular, was because Digimon changed their formula too much from each iteration to the next while Pokemon and the like stayed 90% the same, and made additions or edits to what already worked. Had Digimon World 1 been expanded upon, had the story ultimately continued, had the concept played the same, and had the issues been fixed, it could have been a real contender for the Pokemon franchise.
This game stands out as such a unique experience because it was so great, despite the difficulty curve and the sheer amount of information there is to take in. Nurturing your Digimon is so specific because this allows there to be the amount of Digimon there were in the game, makes you have to save up items to skip certain amounts of training, makes you go after Digimon that make your training and raising easier or more efficient, even if the amount is only a little. Fishing mini games, Curling mini games, puzzles, riddles, type matchups, exploration, arena, multiplayer arena.... so many things to do.
Seeing your City develop is a magical feeling that not all games can provide, even games that are based on farming and village forming, because this one builds from the ground up based on where you go and what you do, that's the only say you have in this process as compared to collecting materials and placing them as you like.
The battle system isn't turn based or something you fully dictate, it's an auto play of sorts based on how you raised and trained your Digimon.
The next games went turn based, gave you more than one Digimon, over simplified things to the point of being boring or way too easy - the future titles ruined this Digimon, or at least became entirely separate entities of their own by making so many dam changes.
I miss games like this, new games never take this much risk or go this deep anymore. Most games are bland generic crap nowadays and it sucks because games like this had so much more depth, with so little capability of consoles and memory at the time, more than 20 years ago. I hoped for Digimon Survive to be a game like this, but that ended up being a turn based light novel game instead, feels like a Digimon World game like this will never return lol, RIP.
@@Siver5300 Digimon World Next Order is supposed to be coming to Switch within the next few months, right? Ill definitely get it for that and try it
But this one too, after seeing some gameplay and reading what others said, doesnt matchup to the original, though Ive heard it is pretty close
I too first played it at 8 but eventually gave up on it 🤣
@@ChenzoCenteen i played digimon world as a child and digimon world next order a few years ago, and next order is decent, some things feel a bit odd compared to the original, but all in all, it's still cool enough
CAP
sama with me man, i bring dictionary everytime i play
There's an important aspect of combat you forgot to mention- whether or not your digimon actually does what you tell them to do depends on their discipline. Also happiness extends their lifespan.
😊
This game almost single-handedly boosted my problem solving and management skills as a kid. All the planning, calculating, math, memorizing... it was a fun time and I look back on it fondly.
Thank you for the review. I was so in love with this game I would wake up early before school and go to my friends house across the street just to play it
Hey, this was great.
My favorite Digimon when I was a kid was Gabumon, and when my beautiful blue bear dog turned into an ogre thing and then later a literal alien in a flying saucer, I cannot properly express to you how sad and confused I was.
Thanks for this retrospective!
I remember DW1. My most fond memories was watching my dad play, and beat, the game with such ease. I didnt understand it when I was younger, but when I noticed he kept entire *notebooks* of what he did, learned, what stats Digimon had, etc. - for all three of the Digimon World games ( at the time ), it all makes sense now why I never completed or got very far as a kid.
Ah, how I miss those days.
In regards to Kenji Watanabe's art or the Japanese cover of the game, he actually does still work for Bandai in designing new Digimon even to this day. Even does some of the artwork for the current card game too!
@Soar Project I bought 2 of those boxes lol Of the classic packs. No way I needed 2 haha. Now me and a friend are about to have our first Battle :D
31 yearold vs 28. lol so hyped, been watching how2play videos.
This was my childhood growing up. I played this with my childhood friend from when we were 7 yrs old just all day taking turns training, exploring and fighting. Every evolution was written down, we didn't know the mechanics and it was just an overall amazing experience. We still talk about this game every once in a while, he even shared our experiences on my wedding day. I still believe it is THE best Digimon game ever made. Funniest moment for us was when our Numemon slid inside that Monzaemon costume I believe in the Toy Factory and then it learns this move called Thunder Justice that's super OP. Ah, brings back so many memories. Thanks for covering this!
Numemon turning into Monzaemon is a core memory for me
So many memories on this game.
Was so hard but succeeding was super gratifying...
Played this game with my brother. R.i.p.
I will never forget my first ultimate digimon...
Rise from the ashes, mighty PHOENIXMON!
That was my favorite...
This review was a blast.
You don't need to meet the stats requirements to evolve, when checking for evolution you only need to meet 3 requirements out of 4 (stat/care mistakes/weight/special requirement). So for example if you want to evolve greymon to metalgreymon you can do that by only having 0 care mistakes, weight between 60 and 70 and either fighting 30 battles or having max discipline. After learning this mechanic the game will feel a lot less grindy since evolving to ultimate will be a lot easier and thanks to the stats bonus from evolving you will be ready to progress without too much grinding. Also, getting tired (not sleepy) from training is not a care mistake but makes the digimon weaker in battle, easier to get sick and many other debuffs.
...I'm gonna break this game in half
@@Wayneisboss in the evolution tool site if you scroll down you can read the full documentation about the game. There are a lot of really cool mechanics. Too bad the game doesn't explain them properly...
Correct. Once I realized that you only need 3 out of 4 requirements, I barely stat grind lol. Just fulfull the CM, Weight, and Bonus Condition for Ultimate evolution.
If you treat your digimon well without stressing over things, there’s a good likelihood of evolution still
This info would've saved me so much screaming as a kid.
this is actually my first time watching an hour video in youtube FULLY, subscribed maann
I now understand why I had such a miserable time completing this game as a kid. 🤣 I really want to play it again now.
It really is one of the most mechanically dense games I've ever touched haha
@@Wayneisboss lol yeah. 12 year old me never had a chance.
Lol I remember getting stuck in this game because for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why my digimon would always, ALWAYS turn into Numemon or Sukamon. I found out years later that I just wasn't sending them to the damn toilet 😂
@@Wayneisboss 14:53 I had the guide... yeah it sucked
Hit the gym, go to toilet, repeat until champion level and you can beat the whole game. If you want 100% you really need to check some guides for the last RNG spawns because those are some real cryptic shit
I remember playing this as a kid and I never figured out how to beat it. Never came close, as I lost the disc, but I remember playing it for hours on end. Man, this is a blast from the past.
This is my favorite game!! Fun fact I learned a long time ago: the Anime was meant to promote the game!! Once they realized the anime was popular on its own, they changed it--thats when they defeated Devimon and moved from File Island to Server Continent. It was meant to be a short anime of only a few episodes too (from what I heard, I'm not sure if thats true)
Anyway, I love this vid and thank you for this. Its a beautiful video and just super fun.
That’s not true, the anime was meant to be shorter but they managed to get a full year and not just a season, so the story was expanded.
The anime was never meant to promote Digimon World, if it was why would everything be so different? From the evolution, to the characters, to the villains and themes. It is its own world, meant to broaden the scope of Digimon and appeal to more children. That’s why you have Digivices and Crests, not V-Pets.
Its a similar case to the serialized manga “V-Tamer”, which promotes V-Pets but uses Taichi. Maybe you got it confused with that?
Aah, Digimon World 1. This was the first ever game I've beaten to the absolute max, with all the Medals (Minus Penguinmon's Curling Challenge, because that Medal was total bullshit).
This also drove me to have MegaSeadramon as my Mascot Digimon of choice, because I always saw him as this Legendary Badass Sea Dragon that shoots Lightning and Ice, and at that time, I thought that that was the coolest thing possible. To this day, MegaSeadrmon is still one of my top 5 most favourites. He's like an old friend to me; and we go waaaay, way back in our legacy days. I was 7 years old, the first time I've gotten him, and he's been my old-time partner in Digimon ever since. I even gave him a name: Summer. (because I got him on that season)
Now I'm saving up for a Nintendo Switch because Digimon World: Next Order is coming over on February 2023.; and you beat that I wanna see if I can beat with Summer being a MetalSeadramon.
You're right about this game being confusing for kids. It's cool seeing an explanation & ending to a game & it's mechanics my brother & sisters couldn't get too far in. I always had a soft spot for a game that has a fixes/builds the town over time element, so that's why I kept going back to it. Also glad to see you are now an Andromon respector too.
It's so much information lol I can't imagine trying to wrap my head around this without guidance as a kid
]pppplppppppppo
This was great fun to watch. I wasn't expect as much of you in this but honestly it made for a really comfy watch. Like a friend running you through this insane game they've become obsessed with!
God, I remember playing this loads and literally only ever had the pooh Digimon. Never ever understood how to stop it from happening.
I think that was the main thing I ever heard about this game for a while lol
That Numemon was pretty infamous to a lot of people who grew up with this one
@@Wayneisboss Yeah totally, I had absolutely no idea what to do as a stupid 9 year old. Also I watched this whole thing mate, awesome job.
@@JordanGrimmer bro i totally get you. It was only til i was in college walking on a random street, randomly thinking about digimon, did realise. "Oh yeah Digimons have different weight and stats"
lmao my neighbor had this game when I was young. & I swear all I rememebr was that Yellow poopMon render xD
Same bro lool
Thank you so much for this detailed video. I borrowed this game from a friend in elementary about 23 years ago and only played it for a few days until I had to give it back. Never got a copy of my own and never touched it again but I liked it during those few days. Feels good to see it again and maybe I'll give it another go one of these days
Watched it all, will watch again in the future. And I'll share it with fellow Digimon fans.
Outstanding work, Wayne, it was really special to watch your thoughts on your first-time and dedicated experience like that. I am a huge Digimon nerd and it took me a few tries to actually finish this game for the first time.
Thanks a lot for sharing it!
As a digimon world OG, you and your review did justice to the good, the bad and the ugly of this perfectly imperfect masterpiece
Such an incredible, well-crafted and lovable piece of media you brought to this world, Wayne. Thank you for bringing back old memories.
I still own this game from 20 years ago or so. Now I'm 27 and it was my first playstation one game. I still have the console and the game in a shelf. I loved playing this game so much as a child and went back to playing it like 5 years ago or so when I finally knew more about the game and the mechanics. As a kid I didn't really put much thought into it, just going arround fighting digimon, training my partner and all that. But with those sweet memories it made playing it again after such a long time even better. So I sat through this video and I felt every second of it. Thank you for reminding me again about why i love this game so much
You've conveyed exactly how I feel about this game. Digimon World, despite its short comings, is really the essence of what I loved about Digimon as a kid and I now hold dear growing up. It was a lovely trip don memory lane watching this video, thank you for the thorough video.
Had this on play whilst making pancakes for breakfast, I will admit i burned a few jumping back to the phone to see a scene you were describing. The game truly was a stand alone at its time. I lost days to it as a kid.
Thank you for sharing this masterpiece to a wider audience.
I NEVER realized that Machinedramon was made of pieces from other cyborg Digimon. That's really cool!
It gets cooler when you realize the three most common Digimon to evolve to Machinedramon are decently connected, Metalgreymon and Megadramon are obvious but the other is Skullgreymon who also makes sense, he needed skin so he made cyborg Digimon parts into his skin
He can also fuse with Chimeramon, another Digimon made of different non-machine Digimon, to become Millenialmon
@@abbyappreciator2041 millenniumon is one of my favorites
I've never beaten this game, but man I loved it as a kid. It was so expansive, it felt so real, like your progression actually changed the in game world. Sure it had its flaws, but if games these days were half as good as this, we'd have a lot more great games to play.
This was a really great video. I didn't get into Digimon at all, hardly, but getting your input on it shows me that I clearly missed something special. Thanks for the video Wayne, and take care of yourself.
I'm really glad you liked it! It's a lot of information, but I was hoping it would still be interesting to people who maybe don't have much experience with the Digimon series
this game was big for me as a kid, thank you for making this video on this game
i used to play this all the time as a kid in the 90s and early 00s and never could understand how to get past so many things cause it was sooooo complicated
CAP u was gettin molested
Yep, I gave up.
Same. Didn't realise till now there's a whole world outside of file city 😂😅😭😭😭 and I only ever kept getting numemons. I was just playing with no concept of stats etc
One of my favourite games growning up, discovering the mechanics, finding new digievolutions, getting new digimons into the city... lots of hours in front of the tv. Thank you for the video!
I was a kid when this game came out, i never knew how to play it so I let my older brother and i used to scream evolve him into Greymon! Good Times.
I'm not even gonna pretend, as a grown man the first thing I tried to do in this game was get myself a Greymon
Some things never change
My young brother and I tried to do the exact same thing with Agumon back then when we played Digimon World 1 on the original PlayStation console system in the early 2000s during our childhood years. Unfortunately, we ended up with Numemon....yuck. But years later until 2021 in my adulthood years, I finally got Greymon (Agumon digivolve from), and I was absolutely shocked and happy. However, this year in early 2022, I was even more happier when my Digimon, Greymon digivolve into ultimate form of MetalGreymon (virus). I was surprised and excited to have an ultimate Digimon in Digimon World 1.
I remember the 1st time i played this game we think that the sweating icon is for water needs so we keep training the digimon in the waterfalls
My god thats all i wanted to see from this game back when i was 6.
I just wanted to see that little augumon transform!

Thanks for making this video man. This game is ALL of the nostalgia for me, and I was never good enough at video games to get very far in the story as a kid. I’ve always wanted to finish the game, but knew I didn’t have time for it as an adult. Thanks for taking me to the end of it! I had no idea how it ended, and machinedramon is an EPIC finish. Thanks again!
I really liked your feature-length Digimon movie! I'm looking forward to the impending blooper episode on the Patreon!
Don't forget the mandatory rapping as well.
Thank you ! I’ve been an advocate for this game for 20 years.
Now i got a compelling video to push my Digimon World agenda :)
This was a great video! I'm glad the algorithm sent me here, lol. You nailed it when you said that this game challenges what you consider a good or a bad game - I feel the exact same. This game, on many technical fronts would be considered a bad game, but after you play it knowing what to expect, it's very hard to call it that.
This is one of the most "art" games in my opinion; it feels like it was done with a lot of love and care, and the people behind it did what they thought would be the best for the game, regardless of the results. Especially after playing more recent games (the latest Pokémon games come to mind), this feels like a very passionate game.
Thanks so much! This was probably one of the most fascinating games I ever got to really dig into, it was a really fun challenge to try and tackle it
Dude, this video was really really good. I could feel the personality of the game through your personality and delivery.
Thank you for covering this game, it was my whole childhood
As a Digimon World fan I'd like to thank you for such an amazing video. It creates a really awesome awareness of what this game is for a lot a people. I come to it at least once a year and after your video is time to start it again.
I remember playing this as a kid, but being a child i didnt understand much. Thanks for this blast from the past.
I love your videos on the Digimon World franchise. My brother and I grew up on these games, and are still huge fans of Digimon. I can't for you to do a video on Digimon World 3. The way you go into all the mechanics of each game, how some bits of them have either not aged well, or are just silly. I love your work, man. More power to you! See you next mission!
I played this game a bunch as a kid and never got anywhere.
Never even figured out how to get an Ultimate.
I came back like, late last year with a guide and finally beat it and I gotta say, despite how obtuse and complex the machanics can be, this is still one of my favourite games of all time
Doing the fishing in 2022 without using save states + fast forward...you absolute madman. Respect.
There are no words to explain my love for this game. When I think of my childhood, this is the best part. :) My favorite part of this video was the voiceover actually. :D
Loved every second of this video, thank you so much for putting the insane amount of hours into this game to make it. I’m about to watch your video on the second game and I’ll be HANGING out for your coverage of the third game!
I'm genuinely surprised this video doesn't have more views. I haven't seen a better video on Digimon World 1, really well made video so good.
Man. Lots of memories i had with this game. It is true it will consume a lot of time to play the game. Literally blood sweat and tears. I played this game when I was 12 or 13 I think. And this game has a lot of charm in it that made me play it non stop compared to Final Fantasy Franchise. I was smiling the whole time while watching it. You tackled every aspect of the game and it made me feel the same experience I had when I was playing this game 20 years ago. Thanks
I think the mechanics being so hidden adds to the games charm more than you might give it credit for. Darksouls tapped into that same feeling. A thread of mystery that you slowly unravel, learn and eventually master like some kind of pet based Sherlock Holmes. It definatly does dip it's toe into the "TOO obtuse" pool at times though.
Agreed, when I played this game at 6 or 7 years old it was beyond ridiculously difficult, but was super cool when I got a digimon that was on fire one time - then he died and I didn't know what I did right to get him and never saw him again.
RIP old friend, gone but not forgotten
@@Lucky-tt2yq I just have trauma from having 150 centarumons
@@Raymuk Omg, same here. When you get to that level of understanding of the game that you don't get Numemon anymore but you still don't exactly know how to get specific stuff it's ALWAYS Centarumon, Drimogemon and Whamon... soooo annoying.
Honestly, I'm against any games having their main mechanics SO hidden, the only realistic to know about then for the average player, is through guides.
I love both this game and souls games, but how insanely obtuse they can be is not something I love about them.
just wanted to say. congrats on the second video to hit 100k views. this has been in my recommended for a few days.
loved this game growing up. thank you for giving it the attention it deserves
Thanks so much! This video was a hell of an undertaking, the positive reception has meant the world
Just wanted to say real quick; This video is picking up so much faster than most things I upload and man, thank you all so much for giving what I put together here a look.
A few attentative people have posted corrections for mistakes I made and I'll do my best to pin (favorite/heart/whatever) the most helpful ones, cause despite my best efforts, I did get some stuff wrong in this analysis or even missed a couple things.
That said, I really appreciate anyone helping add to the conversation and bearing with me as while I did grow up loving the Digimon franchise, I did approach this game as a newcomer and clearly missed a few things in this beast of a game lol
Thanks again, everyone!
See You Next Mission!
I Absolutely love this game...
Played hundreds of times back in the day, discovered a lot of new evolutions, read a ton of guides...
The vibe of growing the city is unequal!
Awesome video!
I feel so nostalgic =)
I just got the physical trilogy for less than 100 USD this year. My favorite is Digimom World 2 because of the DNA evolution and the mystery dungeons and music. But now since I own all three, I will give digimon world 1 and 3 a second chance. Thanks and subbed! 😊
digimon world 3 was the only one i could ever get my hands on. it changed my life
I've been playing this game since 1999 and replayed it here and there almost on a yearly basis.
What I REALLY appreciate about this game is the environment. They look ALIVE and makes it as if you're in a real adventure island. From the calm Native Forest, the guitar strum of Gear Savanna with ShimaUnimon's hoofs clapping, or the creepy Grey Lord's Mansion. All are well made! Unlike e.g. Cyber Sleuth which most of its maps are just the same corridor-style stuff and looks very bland.
I can't describe it better.... I really wish it would be longer.
Very well said.
Did you play next order?
@@YataLock98 next order was a fantastic follow up to this game
Finally someone said it! I liked cyber sleuth but those blue corridors were so boring after a while
Justice! You really shed light on my most beloved childhood game. Thank you for this.
This video was the perfect review of Digimon World. You nailed it. I’ve sadly never actually beaten the game, but maybe it’s time to pick it back up.
I definitely reccomend it! It's such a unique experience and deserves to be played
That said, we also have Digimon World Next Order coming to Switch and PC soon which is a really good evolution (and probably more accessible version) of the format introduced by the PS1 game!
I’ve had it since the age of about 6 and didn’t end up beating it until I was in university 😂
digimon worl holds a special place in my heart. I love this game flaws and all. Its worth a play through and experiencing it on your own. thank you for this video. great job
The music of this game is amazing, the file city music is so similar to that one track in Minecraft... love it, it's so nostalgic to me. Also loved the game, even though I didn't understand shit as a kid and always got numemon and never managed to progress far due to that.
I feel like if one game deserves a remake, it's this one. So much potential.
Man. I came here with no expectations because I never saw this channel before and I had a BLAST watching your video. As someone who just modded 2 New 3DS XLs, your 3DS comment made me laugh hard. I also loved Digimon as a child and oh my god I can't even tell how many hours I've put into that PS1 classic. Your video is very interesting and engaging.

I used to love digimon back in the day, watched the anime and had toys but never had any of the videogames, 7 year old me would have had a TERRIBLE time playing this lmao too much stuff to keep track of. Great retrospective, I might give this game a shot now 👍
Much appreciated! I always wanted to play this as a kid, so it was such a cool opportunity to finally get it in my hands. I just had no idea what I was getting myself into
I seriously like the way you run through every aspect of the game seamlessly. If I didn't make videos I wouldn't have noticed. I like that. Great video
My cousin and I spent every summer for years trying to beat this game. We never did it. Years later though, I tried my hand at Next Order and managed to beat it. Someday I really hope to beat Digimon World 1
Wow...that's cool. It brings back our old memories. Just started collecting Digimon TCGs back and sharing them with others in my channel. Kuddos dude.
While rewatching the digimon anime this year for the 6th time I finally put two and two and realized File city in that anime is almost the exact same as the one in the series. They sare a lot of the same places and geography but they made their own thing with the anime. Gear Savannah, Overdell and the canyon are all mentioned. It was pretty cool to see the parallels and how the game inspired a lot about the anime that also got inspired by a V-pet. Still to this day my #1 Favorite game, I have no idea how I figured out the game as a kid but that knowledge still accompanies me.
Just finished your Digimon World 3 review! You've got a great sense of humor and solid editing glad to be a new fan 😊
One of my favourite games ever. Would love an updated version of it.
ua-cam.com/video/CBTMxv78L4E/v-deo.html it is being made by fans
Try Digimon World - Next Order
I played this as a kid and your take on it is great. I was laughing and reminiscing the entire time. Ill probably watch this over again
Love this game. I always come back and play it every year or so. There was a couple things regarding care mistakes that may be inaccurate (I don't think tiredness is a care mistake just reduces lifespan) but this was a great video, watched the whole thing!
Ah yeah I figured I was gonna miss something along the way lol I appreciate the clarification though! Always thought games like this were upheld by the community teaching each other the ropes
@@Wayneisboss definitely, someone made a really detailed guide about the parameter mechanics. That's where I got that info from, but can't remember the source unfortunately. still, great work!
Well, it only took me *checks date* about a year to get around actually watching the video...
First of all, great video and thanks for the shoutout. I'm always glad when my work is actually useful for people. :D
I think part of what makes the game special is the vibe of File City. It just feels like a place where one simply belongs to, where one can feel at home. It's a rare quality in games and one I absolutely adore whenever I encounter it-and Digimon World was the first one where I did.
Even though its sequels improved on many of the issues this game has, none have quite managed to capture the same vibe, which is part of the reason why it's still so popular among fans of the series.
That being said, I absolutely recommend playing Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode. It's, gameplay wise, the best Digimon World experience so far. The only of my guides you have to follow for it is the one for installing the translation patch. ;)
Another interesting aspect of this game is the speedrun. It's actually what got me back into the game and a major reason for all the research I did on this game. It shows off quite a few of the discoveries the community has made over the years of how this game works.
Oh, and did I mention there is a randomizer?
Also, some timestamped notes I made while watching the video:
12:34 Using Bonus Try can absolutely be worth it, but only under two conditions:
1. You're good at it
2. You're lucky
The problem is, the minigame is rigged and most of the time you can't actually win, but assuming perfect timing you'd still get more stats from it overall.
28:45 There is actually a mechanic where Digimon with low brains and discipline just stares holes into the cloud for a few seconds sometimes. It's called "senile" state in the original game files.
It's not what happens in the clip, though. That looks like the AI is actually having some problems...
38:37 It's actually 3072 bits exactly (it makes sense when you think in binary, I promise). I've seen my fair share of unlucky people fail this minigame at like 3070 bit...
44:35 That's an interesting one I never thought about before. The progress of File City is implemented by having you teleport to different maps with different IDs based on your current progress. So if you progress to change the map all the poop on it should disappear.
47:13 B, A and S cups do. But it's random, they have a chance of 10%, 20% and 30% respectively.
57:55 Funnily enough, only Devimon, MetalGreymon and Machinedramon are mandatory encounters. The rest can be skipped with some precise movement.
Really glad you gave it a watch! I always knew with a video project this big, there'd be some stuff I would miss or get wrong, but I think that's ok as long as the community can come together and help educate each other and if I can inspire a bit of that discussion, mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned
And of course, excellent work yourself! I'm really looking forward to tackling DW3!
My relationship with this game is so complicated. It has so much charm and feels good to get an Ultimate but it's so punishing if you don't know what to do and grindy due to the age mechanic. I feel like I ultimately still love this game but it's so frustrating. I used the same evolution tool you mentioned and it has helped so I'd also recommend guide scumming for evolution, especially as most of us have done our time as kids lmao
Accidentally found this video and loved it.
We used to play this SO MUCH as kids and as Finnish kids under 10 years old with no English skills at all, it is shocking how far we got in this. No one ever finished it though.
There were so many urban legends we had about this. Push the boulder for long enough and a secret way opens, there's a treasure in the waterfall that you have to get etc etc. And the total mystery of how to get good evolutions.
I loved this game as a kid, I got around 50 Numemon to my name! Sadly, the PAL version had a game breaking story bug that could not be fixed, because internet did not exist :(
I remember getting this game way back when I was 9 years old. I remember starting and restarting over and over again thinking I was doing something wrong, I didn't realise that stat requirements were needed to digivolve along certain paths. I spent days just finding mushrooms, training speed and strength, and running to the bathroom.
I remember not getting terribly far, though. I lost two life and evolved a Bakemon, which helped me absolutely wreck my way through the tropical jungle to just before the Dino region. I remember thinking I'd hold off on the dino region and finish up the drill tunnel but then my digimon died of old age for the very first time. I ragequit there since I didn't know your digimon kept things after dying naturally. My young mind assumed that I was being unfairly punished and then never picked up the game again. But every so often I think about it, wondering if I ever found it fun or if it was a timewaster.
Thanks to this retrospective, I'm sad I never gave it as much of a chance as it deserved. Maybe it's even worth digging up my old copy out of storage along with my old PS2 to see if they still work.
Yea, I don't think the game was for kids at all, I remember rage quitting so many times. There was no guide, all guesses, I just gave the cd away to a friend and stuck with pokemon...
Nice write up. This game was unforgiving to me as a child. But never have I been so naturally immersed as it does a great job at being non-linear and letting you go about your own way beating/learning the game and it's mechanics. #HappyAccident #WouldntChangeAthing
I seriously need more digimon world games with this exact mecanic. Great video!
I love this game and actively replay it every so often because it was always just so different and always stuck in my memory, also fun fact, the main character of this game actually appears as a side character in Digimon world next order on the ps4 which serves as a soft reboot of this style of the Digimon world Games specifically
I like the cybersleuth music playing in the background. Nice touch 👌
Without counting, how many times do you think I said the word "Digimon" in this video?
42!
ima go with at least 5
173
Someone count
100?
for a game/franchise that i hold very close to my heart, this video gave it justice. thanks for this amazing one hour. it made my weekend and month :3 i played this game for many many hours as a teen. ts a crime that you don't have 100k subs :
This game has such a big place in my heart. I really loved it as a kid. But... Pal edition bug never allowed me to complete it. But still, even with such a big flaw, this game was amazing.
What bug? I play PAL and I've 100%'d this
This is one of the best made videos on UA-cam. Well done.
One interesting thing I just realized, I think Machinedramon might have been the first ever Mega level Digimon. For the original V-Pets, Ultimate was the final level of evolution. Eventually the anime introduced VenomMyotismon as a level beyond the "fully evolved" Ultimate stage. Then WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon rose up to fight him. But Digimon World came first, and Machinedramon is a Mega level Digimon.
It's not. The very first one were heraklehabuterimon, metaletemon, and saberleomon that was introduced on pendulum vpet in 1998
Certainly a video that I'll be coming back sometimes to watch it again. Hope you do more Digimon videos and your channel gains more visibility.
First video of yours I’ve seen, I didn’t even know it was an hour long and I watched it all and not realizing the length.
The video was great man
Keep doing what you’re doing
What an excellent video, I had so much fun watching! So glad to have discovered this video and your channel!
Digimon World is one of my favorite games, hands down the best "monster trainer" style game. The style of the various places, the blend of natural and computer components, seeing trees that need to be plugged into the ground, I love the sheer imagination on display. And yeah, raising only one Digimon, that lives only for so long really makes you connect with the little guy and grow attached to him. My favorite Digimon is Monzaemon, a digimon whose design I didn't really care for, but he's the first ultimate I was able to get as a kid, and I was able to do so many things, uncover so many places. I have a lot of fond memories with the dude
This game, as you said, has a soul! It makes you care
Excellent video. This was one of the games I remember the fondest from my childhood. A friend and I managed to beat it and I still remember that final boss. I don't remember how we did it though, the game was confusing as all hell.
Great dedication to putting together all of those toys for your presentation. I always wondered what where those devices they were using in the intro. Good job!
damn bro I respect your patience and loyalty to the franchise. Thank you
Great video! Awesome break down of its history and lead up to development.
If you ever replay this game. 1 easy way to get TONS of bits is by trading items with mojymon in iceland near penguinmon's house.
If you save all your digimushrooms early and you buy med recoveries, you can trade them for s.disks which will sell for 2000 bits each. So you can buy 20 med recoveries for 500 bits each (10,000 bits) and sell it for 40,000 bits. Each digimushroom can be traded for a med recovery, which then trades for the above disk. Always bring a auto pilot as your character can and will get stuck on mojymon.
Wow so much memories... I think this game was one of the ones that I have dedicated most time in my life. When I got it there was no internet forums about it... Everything was a discovery... I ran in circles through file island soooo much... Got trapped into the mini mechanics... tried so hard to find a history... And I did not even understood English so well so yes... It was a real struggle. Is so nice to see this revived thanks for this video!
New addition to my beloved Naomi collection. Really love your breakdowns man and appreciate the exhaustive detail. Si gle-handedly revitalized my love of the franchise.
Also love the SAO Abridged clips ❤
