  • In this video I give a full in depth tour of the 1988 Oldsmobile Toronado. I take viewers on a close look through the interior and exterior of this car while showing details, over viewing of features, and noting unique styling cues to the vehicle itself. I also show the engine and the details of it, start it up and see how it sounds under acceleration. A thorough tour/review of this car designed to give others a greater overall appreciation of the vehicle.

Despite its "cookie cutter" GM styling, and the less-than-perfect electronics, this car has stood the test of time. With over 163K miles, it's in remarkable condition. I noticed a bit of the quintessential "poofing" of the cloth on the headliner, as well as the sun visors. During the 80's and early '90's, I dare anyone to deny that they ALL did this. I've seen some, well let's say, "creative" ways some people have tried to "fix" this. As far as the odd "key in ignition" warning, I believe that it's actually supposed to go "bing bing bing" instead of the solid tone. A tribute to the electronics of the day. Some may find the velour upholstery tacky. Say what you will until you sit on it. It is fabulous. It's never hot, nor cold. Take this car through sharp corners, and you will NOT slide around like you will with leather. It holds your pants like velcro.
While some may consider calling this car a Toronado is akin to blasphemy, it's still a Toronado. I like it.

That car looked pretty nice, despite the wrinkled steering wheel wrap and the missing piece of grille trim below the right headlamp cover. (Yes, it has 163,000 miles; a little wear is to be expected.). The dashboard got my attention; it's like a video game on wheels. And that shifter is kinda slick-looking, too - looks like that seen in earlier Camaros and some late 60s to early 70s Buicks. And that interior is as plush as some living room sofas. One question: what happened to the test drive? That would have been a thriller.

Good choice after the recent review on the Buick Reatta, its twin for comparison purposes, specially because both models are rare birds even in their time, let alone now. These were exclusive, and rather expensive luxury coupes then, but like all glory, it's faded in time. Still, what we can say, that they aged well, and thank to their tried-and-true GM drivetrain underneath, they can still serve for inexpensive regular service for people in tight circumstance.

Not bad. Needs gas. The trim under the headlight door on the passenger side is missing, and if I'm not mistaken, the HVAC controls are from a slightly newer model year (the buttons have rounder edges, I had had the same unit in a '93 Riviera). In my 88 Toro, the buttons have sharper corners.
I personally like these cars. I know some don't, and that's great for them. But you're hard pressed to find an American car that could be optioned like these. Sunroof, all wheel disc ABS, Bose stereo, built-in phone, and even a touch screen from '89 onward. You could also get inflatable lumbar and bolster support. Cadillac wasn't even doing some of these things at the time. Except maybe for the Eldorado, which is the Toronado's sister car. Same platform, different engine.

Dashboard setup is cool. I'm not for the 80's digital gauges but those don't look bad at all. Car is stylish...

@Vsanto5 3800s are great engines. They were in production in one form or another from the late 70s to 2008!

Dumb question here but I haven’t dealt with old cars since the late 90’s. If you buy a car like this, are parts easy to find?

For everyone that's complaining about the chime: The chime is messed up on this particular Toronado. It's not supposed to sound quite like that. The volume is supposed to fade out, so it goes BOOoong...BOOoong.... or BOong, BOong (depending on the alert) instead of BOOOOOOOONG. watch?v=8O-k2Rarego&t=78 demonstrates the correct "slow" chime (also used as the "fasten seat belts" chime), while watch?v=d6Fv1Z5tC_k&t=329 demonstrates the "fast" chime.

Oldsmobile wasn't selling enough cars so GM decided to cut them off, bad decision because I think Olds are great cars. Got an supercharged LSS myself, and I'm happy with this one

Regardless to what the critics thought of the cars, I thought they were great,I should also say the 88 toronado was the first car I saw may of 87 with the first 3800v6
