No but seriously. HR is a useless field. Have never been to an HR screening where the interviewer knew enough to be evaluating me as a candidate. Pointless bureaucrats.
Agree. Then add another 3 or 4 stages of recruitment such as mental agility test or a phone/video interview. And even if you already have a perfect CV, then you have to write everything again on each website... Plus the cover letter.
Im a job trainer and this how things are gone now if you do it right you won't need to apply to 20 position. I use matching keywords often gets my clients interview call backs fast. Myself included
NOT a fan of ATS! Apply for a job but you have to essentially gear your resume using SEO principles. Employers want people with great interpersonal skills, yet , your resume isn't reviewed by a human being and the rejection letter you get is a computer generated form letter. Great interpersonal skills there.... Good info I'm sure if your looking to beat the system, but when things aren't broken, don't go messing with them. HR staff/employers need to go back to reviewing applications and resumes. throw out the Applicant Trashing System!
Very annoyed at this software and the sheer lazyness and unprofessional behaviour of those that used it. I have been ignored for four years now. There is nothing wrong with my resume if you actually read it. But so I found out today, god only knows why, but after being put through this software, i look like a complete loser. Doesn't even make any sense. It is completely ignoring all of the work i have done over the years and only mentioning to employers the few years of security work i did while at Uni. This has ruined me and my sons life.
we're all on the same boat, man... looks like a war declaration from employers ! WTF is this BS ? I'm just disgusted after losing a full year trying to solve their stupid tantrums 🤬🤬🤬
Some companies have their own online application where you have to fill in your contact, education, and experience information. But also they have a section to upload a pdf resume. Why would they have both, since I have already provided like 90% of the important info by filling the online application?!
In short, your essential building your own profile within the ATS software for them because their software cant pull your details from your CV into the ATS properly. Its not ideal, but some companies simply cant afford to make sure all of their applications are compatible with ensure seamless integration. You would essentially be a CV sat in a system where there are thousands of fully completed profiles without completing the initial form if this I'd the case... it's frustrating, but not all companies have the budget for top shelf HRIS/CRM/ATS solutions that dont require you to do this.
@@juliana2000 if you don't have time to make a proper application, why the hiring manager should allocate time to review your application when he/she has hundreds of resumes that applied properly?
I paid a fiverr gig 100$ to create a resume and they ended up heavy with information stuffed into columns and tables. I have sent out 1000s of resumes and received 3-4 calls, meaning the ATS was playing dirty probably. Damn, my time got wasted 😮
me too: I keep on hearing or reading contradictory advice - like only list hard skills in resumes and keep the soft skills for the cover letter with explanation - and also spent 30$ a month in a dummy robot that is suppose to help me figure out which key words I should add to my resume... damn, my resume is my story, take it or leave it ! I only apply to perfect matches 'dutywise', checking all the boxes in their must haves, but it's never enough ! "only the candidates selected for interview will be contacted", so all the other ones can have to guess how in the world they got ignored, what was missing in their application or any such feedback from anyone
A software deciding whether your resume will ever make it to an actual human HR employee dor evaluation. Great! But hey, don't you worry, you humans out there. You can trick the machine by adjusting your resume: just take all individuality out of it, no fancy fonts or pictures, don't get too creative! 🤮😱😡
Jen, such a good explanation about the ATS's. The one you highlighted that people especially ought to remember are the special characters and anything that looks goofy!
Thanks, Andy. I've had plenty of times as a hiring manager where I asked to see the screened out applicants out of curiosity and found many great candidates. My background is in data so I know sometimes the story you see isn't the right story. I know I was by far an exception though! Many fantastic candidates miss out on jobs just by not understanding what's happening behind the scenes.
Jen, thanks for these super valuable tips about applicant tracking systems. This can be so intimidating. You did a wonderful job explaining what an ATS is and how an applicant can get around it.
In other video I saw that Times New Roman font CVS are automatically deleted by ATS. So, I don't know who to believe. It seems so hard to determine what really works :/ . Sorry if my comment seems to be bothering but I really got very confused having this two different sides abot the Times new roman font.
Robert − Just learned about ATS a month ago and I′ve found that method to work best. Good of you to share, because one can never tell unless you′re specifically told ... or you get the job I suppose, at which time you no longer really care.
Great video! I've tailored resumes for ATS in the past, but have also had a more descriptive resume that I'd hand to hiring managers. Is this advisable to have two seperate resumes?
Hi Matthew! Thanks for your comment. We suggest using just one resume that is both descriptive and tailored for ATS. After your resume passes through the tracking software, a hiring manager or recruiter will review it before inviting you to an interview. It's important to write your resume with that in mind. I'm curious why you went with two versions in the past. Was it for length purposes? It can be very difficult to be concise when writing a resume!
If a recruiter at a temp agency sees you in a bad mood due to stress or mental illness and you offend them can they make up some notes by your name and say do not hire this person and sent it to multiple companies?
I'm not trying to suggest lying on a resume. It almost always comes back to haunt you later (and it's wrong even if it doesn't). However, there are many different ways to word things and still be truthful. This includes using the same words as a job description or putting on skills where you have at least some knowledge. I wouldn't recommend listing a skill or tool that you have absolutely no experience with but if you have some experience then you can have that discussion during interview.
In theory, but what is happening is its rejecting qualified applicants as a result of how employers enter their specs. Also do you know this software can be used to discriminate?

ATS eliminates the human from human resources, the talent in talent acquisition, and often eliminates the unicorn candidates you've been looking for because their skills were described honestly rather than generalized in a cut-and-paste of what the job description has already said. In one sense, this is a test where the answers are already given so it should be easy. In the more realistic sense, why would any employer want this? It filters out candidates based on the least important factor: they're ability to copy the teacher's work.

Gonna start an OF.
Easy, just copy word for word the job listing and lie on the resume. Screw ATS robots.

Because they are button pressers. Not a braincell between them.
This ATS is total crap. Companies can scan more resumes because now more people apply. It's a waste of time for everyone

I paid TopResume. They suck. I had to redo mine and got more interviews after converting it back to plain text - no tables and columns

Does the ATS tells the recruiter what % is picked up CV matches or what are the words matching

Its a form of hiring discrimination which is against the law in the USA.
