An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a software/platform that employers use to collect, scan, and sort resumes they receive for their open positions.
In this episode, I give an in-depth explanation of how ATS systems work and dispel some myths common among career coaches and our clients.
One of these myths is that applicant tracking systems automatically mean that resumes are being parsed and scored.
Another common myth is that formatting is the reason your clients are getting kicked out of an application process.
What is important when it comes to formatting is drawing an eye to the content that matters.
Rather than focusing on ATS-friendly templates, we should focus more on the content, keywords, and demonstrating that our clients are qualified for the position.
Additionally, I share some tips on writing a human and ATS-friendly resume with the help of AI.

ATS has ruined the job market for both employers and candidates.
Well, maybe they should stop relying on it so heavily and use a different system.
unemployed for 9 months from a huge layoff, i been getting interviews through linkedin recruiters without applying but their job stink and the interviewers seem to be using questions from AI. time to start using ChatGPT to answer their silly questions.
Great tips - But realistically while many are simply filling in a few applications applicants of color are applying to on average 80 - 90 applications daily. Meanwhile systems are disqualifying us based on our photo, name, chosen ethnicity/race, and so many other factors. I'd like to hear your tips on that, because it isn't always as easy as changing a font type for us.
ATS systems are a redundant pain in the ass for job candidates. Far better to build your LinkedIn network and get your resume directly into a person's hands. Nobody has time to waste re-typing their entire resume into 100 ATS systems that just asked you to upload your resume, only to receive 30 minutes of "assessments" to complete afterward when you've never even talked to a person at the company. Recruiters that insist on using these tactics need to read the room. Savvy workers know that how a company treats you during their hiring process is exactly how they treat you if you work for them. So ATS-heavy recruitment is a red flag all around.
Networking is critical to earn referrals into roles!
Saw this video really thoroughly. Got to understand ATS. Loved every bit of it. Thank You :)
Thank you for the kind words.
Great tips and for providing a current understanding of how a resume gets handled by ATS both with and without scoring and ranking used in various companies.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video
You're welcome!
Thank you for sharing, please draft for us a template of ATS friendly CV
Finally someone I agree with!
Thank you for your comment!
Thanks for the video! Could you please provide us with an ATS- friendly CV?
Just go back to typing the resume out from scratch without using templates and all the other stuff and list what best match the job descriptions. Keep it simple.
Yes! When you build it from the ground up, you can use formatting that highlights your best content. And it doesn't have to be complex to be modern and effective.
I just did that the other day. I totally agree
good video. if there is such a talent shortage why in the world is my resume not getting through, especially my current employer of 250K people. I am lost.
yea, i was shocked when I heard her say talent shortage. I have submitted my resume to 60 companies over the last 45 days. And I have not had any first interviews. I customize my bullet points so that they are tailored to the job, and I just cannot see why I am not getting any responses. This job search is even more difficult than my job search that I went through in 2008
There are areas where there is a talent shortage, and we also have more applicants for an open job than ever before in other industries/geographies. You might also check out the video on job search techniques here: ua-cam.com/video/CKbKBviRDxg/v-deo.html
@@CareerThoughtLeaders I just watched the video you recommended. I don't think there is much more that I can do, though. I have networked, and in most cases, the people I reached out to, don't have any openings in the companies where they work. I am hitting 70 job applications submitted and no interviews. This has never happened to me before.
@@MikeNeder I have a similar situation like you Mike. I am believing our stories will change positively in a few days to come. #FingersCrossed
@@MikeNeder Those are rookie numbers.
I used to use a cv full of tables. 😅
Hello, can you please give insight on the possible readability of text boxes in a ats system when it is done in a word document.
Thanks in advance.
Text boxes are one of the few formatting tools that don't work in most ATS. The system does not read them. It is best not to use them or at least not put anything important in a text box.
@@CareerThoughtLeaders
Thanks for clarifying. Really appreciate it. 🙏😊
I've been applying to jobs recently with a resume that has all of the text inside of text boxes (I didn't know ATS supposedly can't read them). A lot of these applications ask you to upload the resume first, auto-fill the application with information it extracted from the resume, then ask you to check and fill in any missing or incorrect info. And most of them have been able to parse my resume pretty accurately! I've also been testing it out in various online ATS checkers (Jobscan, Indeed, Grammarly, etc) and they've all been able to extract most of the info correctly. I'm still going to reformat my resume anyway to be on the safe side, but it seems that up-to-date resume parsing software has become sophisticated enough to handle text boxes now.
I have a doubt about scoring, because I've been doing a/b test for my client, and I am pretty sure, ATS rejects a resume with lower scores.
It depends on the company and how they are using the ATS and how many qualified applicants they are getting for their roles. Auto rejection is used, and not as common as we might think.
the first few seconds of this video is all you need to watch
HR is the nexus of marketing (the company's PR b^llsh1t) and legal (liability management.) ATS HAS ruined the job market for the outsiders. "I'll show you how to destroy your thoughtful resume so the poor misunderstood ATS can grind through it and then I'll help reconstruct it into another thoughtful resume suitable for some stiff stuck in HR."
Seems like a bizarre impasse. A resume/CV needs to work for the reader. That means every time it needs to be tailored for the role as the new reader is looking for a different emphasis. The problem isn't resume/CVs. The problem is the sheer ability to fire off 1,000 applications a day creating an unserviceable backlog; the solution to which is ATS. Except it isn't a solution. Humans applying formatting preferences to their judgement is irrelevant to most roles. Detailed history of skills and capability would work better, but when a lot of roles are advertised - the author really doesn't seem to have thought too hard about the ad.
