Love this Mustang! Yeah Chevy and Mopar Guys always have comments about the Pony. But the truth is that it's a fun car to own and drive. Awesome work Ford!
Beautiful! I love the europeans and the japanese. But when it comes to muscle, this is the first honest attempt and I am speechless. Beautiful car, true muscle power and simplicity. Go FORD!!!
@@blackeye3336 only a muscle car fan will turn an 11 year old positive comment into a pissing contest. I think your comment says more about you than anything else.
@hahaha13822: This car is not meant to compete with 300 thousand dollar supercars. Its a 40k muscle car. Its meant to compete with the Camaros and the BMW M3. In which it has already beaten both.
@V8Supercar1 Do you have any idead what Shelby does to a regular GT500 to make it a supersnake? They don't dump all 50 grand into the engine, they do extensive chassis and suspension tuning as well as well as improve downforce. Yet it still posts similar times to a stock Grandsport Corvette. Regardless downforce is for help in corners and top speed there is not enough air pressure from 0-60 to make any difference in tire grip.
The Ford engineering team really hit a home run with this new Coyote engine. And to pull extra ponies out of it to make it a 444hp 7500 RPM redline monster is amazing. And anyone who "doesn't like it because of the lack of ind. rear suspension" should go test drive one...if they'll let you.
the best part about this is that the boss 302 is an utterly massive engine when compared to the European and Japanese competitors. imagine bringing back a big block.
The laguna seca is actually heavier than the regular boss... laguna seca is 3641 and the boss 302 is 3483. The rear seat delete is deceiving because what they don't advertise is the fact that the rear stabilizer added more weight for increased rigidity.
Sources please. The regular Boss 302 is definitely not 100 lbs lighter then the LS. I also wonder where you got the info about the X-brace from. The rear seat delete is 22lbs lighter then the stock rear seats. The brace it self weighs 7lbs and is pretty much just cosmetically and mostly keeps the content of the trunk from flying across the car under emergency braking in traffic.
If you look at the rims while the car is moving forward, why does it sometimes for a second the rim looks like as if the car is going back, what do you call this effect? Always wondered...
@Greendude33: My question is. Where are you getting this info from about the 2013 GT500 already lapping the VIR?. Because I'm looking all over the internet now and I can't find anything. Secondly, comparing the CTSV to the old GT500 is irrelevant when consider the suspension, aerodynamics and downforce upgrades the new GT500 has. The new GT500 is also using stickier tires over the old one.
@OgleTorp then you really need some help understanding. do you compare honda civic si to a lamborghini reventon? no same thing but on a little lower scale.
@luimarco Did you consider money? The Cayman R starts at 66,300, while the boss starts at 48,100. The Porsche is also much lighter. They are both awesome cars, but I prefer the boss, since I'm a fan of its legacy as a muscle car, and its heavenly sound.
@AccordGTR Yes you can adjust the static camber. You heat & bend the tubes at the pumpkin. Why adjust the toe in the 1st place? You adjust the toe on an IRS to compensate for erratic toe changes thru out its range of motion. Kinda unnecessary w/ LRAs as tires get optimal contact patch at all times. The harder you push an IRS, the more you're riding on the tires edges. Quick elevation changes within a turn upsets IRS even more. The wider & lower profile a tire is, the smaller the IRS contact patch
@AccordGTR can you explain what racing weight means? I know the curb weight is 3620 can you explain what you mean by its over 3800lbs racing weight? Also this time is very slow compared to other times this car has got on the track. The regular boss 302 beat this time by almost a second and car and driver got it done in 1:39:50
@Storm7289 How can you post a comment about a test from 07? Motor Trend tested all 11 cars under the same conditions with the the same driver. The Boss didnt come close to the GT-R.
@pcload1etter Does the Nurburgring have a cork screw, quick elevation changes within turns, a tight hairpins, decreasing radius' and a double apex or 2? If so I'm impressed and obvously not all mustangs are bought to carve up corners and especially not the Boss 302LS variety(?) but neither are all 3-series BMW or Porsche 911s but at least mustangs can take a drag strip hammering if called on to do so.
@luimarco 440 is crank hp, not RWHP. And it is actually 444 crank hp. I own a Boss 302, #0248. Mine did 390 rwhp, not sure where you are getting your information.
sorry if i came across as rude i didnt mean too, but i still dont really understand what you mean about the interior. i mean both the boss and shelby have the same layout except the shelby is fully loaded while the boss is more basic with less options, (not that you need it when you have a track monster like the boss). but hey we both love mustangs and i love both the boss and gt500. we can appreciate how awesome these mustangs are. glad you are enjoying the boss that must be one sweet ride!
@Greendude33 I've driven my friends c6 an he drive my boss and he and I both agree my car handled better and was more powerful. What car do you drive and have you ever driven both the vette and the boss? Because I have... I go to Nola Motorsports park on the weekends and I can tell you there are no stock vettes touching my boss unless it's a zo6 or a zr1
@Greendude33 I didn't say the Boss 302 LS seats 3 passengers but has a 3 passenger body as opposed to a 1 passenger sports car. Read the article you yourself brought up. It points to how similarly the Boss and Corvette GS corner thru the sectors despite the Boss having less power to weight. Nevermind (static) balance or center of gravity. What does that tell you? What does that tell you about the other tracks where the GS has lost to the Boss? Is it starting to make sense yet? Corvettes perform
I tracked down a Kona Blue Boss 302 (not the Laguna Seca model) with Recaros. The price is $41k. I have been looking around the net for reviews and found a lot of bad press concerning the Getrag 6 speed transmission. The Chinese made trans is giving many owners nightmares, NHTSA opened an investigation. I love the car, but I'm going to wait a while.
Even by not being so confortable on the roads, we all should celebrate the fact that a brand new personified US muscle car has finally put some real performance effort on real tracks, and with cheaper materials than the exotics. And all this with full world potencial. Its almost a miracle coming from US automakers, since its not a exotic car or a Baja truck.
@AccordGTR Actually you haven't mentioned how it's possible for mustangs to run w/ supercars despite not having their aerodynamics, center of gravity, balance, HP 2 weight and so forth. I only keep repeating the question cause I'm curious and value your expert opinion.
@Greendude33: You call increasing downforce, increasing aerodynamics, adding launch control, adding adjustable dampening with tra control settings minor???? The GT500 is not out yet. Whos to say they wont do anymore laps anywhere else?
lol have you really driven one? cus ive driven the 2013 gt500 multiple times.the gt500 rides incredibly smooth. i own a 2006 mustang gt with a ford suspension kit and the gt500 is a much smoother everyday driver. but put it around a corner and the gt500 feels more balanced. i dont understand how you can say the interior is downgraded? the boss gets a very basic cloth interior its purpose is a track car, the gt500 gets fully loaded interior. so i ask again have you really driven both?
@Greendude33: If IRS is such a big deal and such a deciding factor. Then why is it that the mustang GT is quicker than the SS around the willow springs and the VIR?? Why because it has a slightly better power to weight ratio. Now the new GT500 is gonna have a significant power to weight ratio advantage over the ZL1.
i'll admit its amazing, and i go back and forth on which one i like more. but i think i'd take the new gt500. ive been lucky enough to drive the 2013 gt500 and its amazing!! i really want to drive a boss tho just to see what it feels like. i love mustangs!!
@TheHm3 Z06 not good on the straights? Ford GT 0-60: 3.8sec Z06/Z07 0-60: 3.7sec The GT has top speed though. But to be fair, the GT is a bit older (and with technology advancement these days, it's really old). I love them both either way
@Greendude33 Sure 50/50 static/stationary weight dist is great for spirted driving but when standing on the brakes and trying to turn, do you think it stays 50/50? You give plenty of reasons why the GS should be faster than the Boss and I agree it should, at all tracks but clearly it's not and clearly relys on WOT opportunities and not so many hairpins because of its better power to weight. Nevermind huge tire/brake, balance and center of gravity, a Boss with equal power to weight will
@OgleTorp You want to compare the engines of the 5.0 vs the 7.0?! What makes the 427 so potent is its torque over the 5.0 . Not sure if you have ever ridden sportbikes but the best comparison I can make is the Boss feels like 600 and the Zo6 feels like a 1000 sportbike.
@MasonTrance thast zr1 was mentioned because we were talking about track performance. try to keep up with the program (i know that might be hard for you since youre english).
@acs4llc haha ok I'll bite, how is live axle more advantageous to IRS for circuit racing or autocross? If IRS is not a performance feature, why is it used in high performance cars? Why is live axle not uses in F1 or pure race cars?
SpyderRios yeah, I was surprised 1:41. In fact they lapped the regular Boss 302 at 1:40.2 which is faster than this supposed to be the better laguna seca
@Storm7289 Hate to break it to you but I am using Mastercam software as we speak programming a throttle body plate to be run on a Haas VF2. Tell me one thing I said that is incorrect of the Boss.
I'm guessing Randy wasn't commenting on it as much like he normally does, otherwise there would be more footage of him? I really like Randy, he seems like a really neutral and fair driver.
I drove them both. The GT500 is nice, LOTS of power, but the BOSS 302 just has a more road-friendly feel. It drives so smooth and works as an everyday driver. While the GT500 is noticeably sport tuned (rougher ride, interior is downgraded from the BOSS 302). As for gas milage, the BOSS 302 is MUCH more doable!!
@ESPsandEmgs If the Boss 302 LS was tuned for Laguna's tight hairpins, double-apexes, high speed & off camber turns with quick elevation changes, how would it fail @other tracks like VIR or the Nurburgring? What's missing & isn't Laguna Seca world famous for its highly technical turns? Laguna has hosted Can-Am, Trans-Am, Formula 5000, IMSA GT, Champ Car, Moto GPX, World Superbikes, American Lemans Series & the list goes on.So how is being 'tuned 4 Laguna' a bad thing & how would 1 'detune' it???
Look, there are many factors that must be taken into consideration when looking at track times. For example that LRA in the back of the stang will actually help it out, sometimes it's just a matter of which driver it is, and sometimes conditions can come into play. You're right it is always gonna be mustang vs. camaro but as we all should know mustangs tend to beat out cars that cost up to twice it's own price (zl1 camaro does a good job too) and when that happens, it's just a publicity bonus.
@acs4llc Whats your point? The Corvette Grand Sport is a badass car and is the total package. Unlike the Boss its even got a full frame and respectable top speed performance.
@Storm7289 You do realize that if the Corvette and Boss run a 20 lap race around LS the Corvette will be lapping the Boss before the race is over based on the lap times. The Boss times will also fall off quickly due to the skinny tires building excessive air pressure and brake fade.
@highflyer4 Curb weight doesn't include driver. If racing, you also need a racing harness and roll cage which is at least another 70-100 lbs. I didn't see that in the car. Lap times can vary driver to driver, and track conditions. If the track is dusty, lap times are slower. If the track has been swept by a lot of cars, the lap times will be quicker. I could tune a car just using tire pressure and drop my lap time up to 1-2 seconds depending. Other suspension tuning can drop another 1-2 seconds.
@OgleTorp a litte extra money being twice the cost of the boss? its not really out of hands of anyone who would really want it. the z06 costs about 80k to start then you need to add the packages for the track etc. A z06 isnt a car that works too well as a DD either
@ESPsandEmgs The Boss 302LS old news for Ford and is focusing on the next GT500. Since average Americans don't care about the Nurburgring, American car makers are slow to give it credence. It's the Holy Grail 2 car enthusiast around the world no doubt but how does it represent road courses or back roads in your 'neck of the woods'? If a Porsche or BMW is 'tuned' specifically for the 'Ring, what good is it in North America? Idk where you live but I want something tuned for my geographic area.
@1vdn992 But why didn't they just use the aluminium driveshaft then? Or maybe even a carbon driveshaft to reduce drivetrain momentum and stabilizes engine rotation at lower speeds therefore increasing drivetrain response. I really do like muscle cars but their inferiority around the track and on the road makes me hard to even consider them at all.
@luimarco what are you talking about? a Z06 starts at $74k, if your talking about a base corvette that starts at $49k thats not a Z06. The laguna seca outperforms the base model, is more affordable, and has the better fuel economy.
@acs4llc the tire tuning technique I use (there are many techniques depending on who you talk to), is I try to equalize the tire temp across the tire (inner, center and outer tread temp) among all 4 tires. I correlate this to my driving style and datal-ogger to see if I can drop my lap times overall or achieve the fastest speed through key corners. I experiment with spring rates, compression and rebound settings in my shocks and tire pressure. Note: this only works if u r a consistent driver!
@1vdn992 I thought the last parts of your comment was hilarious... How does a Corvette esp the GS ride like a truck with ultra high tech Magnetic Dampers and double wishbones in comparision to a Stang live axle which is literally also used on trucks. Twitchty handling? The Vette has a 50/50 weight balance and lower center of mass in comparision to the Stang's heavy front end inducing more understeer and lighter rear end being more susceptible to oversteer.
@Bahamuttiamat I agree . I would love to see the Mustang on other tracks. I am sure it would clock fast laptimes on most circuits. MOTOR TREND!! You guys have enough funds I presume. How about taking all the cars to the Nurburgring for similar tests? I think I speak for Bahamuttiamat and other viewers as well.
@eddy2891 yeah, and itll be competing with the shelby 500. the competition for the boss 302 will come from the z28, if it ever exists. if they dont make it, the 302 will have its own class. the zl1 also wont be using the same suspension setup as the zr1. it will be using a very similar traction control system, which is probably what you saw
@V8Supercar1 There also is not a single video of any automotive review magazine reviewing any 2013 model year Mustang. So far the first battlefield was at VIR and SVT's team could not get the 2013 GT500 close to GM's ZL1 lap time. I also am interested to see if Ford ever releases a Nurburgring lap time which I doubt as the Ring is a very hostile environment for a live axle. The GT500 like all GT500's will have problems hooking up in 1st and 2nd gear so it will be close on the 1/4
@Greendude33: Thats no surprise considering it has 136HP more than the boss. Secondly, the new GT500 is not a HP bump. According to Car and Driver, the car has increased downforce, better aerodynamics, adjustable dampers, adjustable trac control settings, launch control, and stickier tries vs. the previous GT 500. If the Camaro fanboys think that the new GT500 is just a HP bump. Then they will be sadly mistaken come this May, when the GT500 reaches dealerships.
@Greendude33: One thing I can tell you. Its really interesting comparing the ZL1 ring lap with the CTSV. ZL1 = 580HP/4100lbs of weight, CTSV 556HP4200lbs . And the ZL1 is a whopping 18 secs faster. Just looking at that comparison right there really does show that Ford have a tough fight on their hands. They may just have to suck it up and bring back the cobra mustangs, since they actually had IRS. But we will see. Things will be interesting when MT get their hands on the cars.
@gmax876 okay the cayman R isn't a cayman, it has been stripped out to weigh less than 3,000 lbs and can 0-60 just as fast as the mustang, it has the PDK tranny and it was engineered for the TRACK. not to mention this car cost 20 thousand MORE than the boss 302. this isn't a regular cayman, its a track car that has the cayman name, this car keeps up with better porsches, i think you just don't want to admit that an american car with a live rear axle is better than a german sports car.
@Greendude33: i'm aware of that. They probably don't have any videos of it because the car is not officially released yet. But did you read the article? I agree that it will be close on the 1/4 mile. 1/4 is such a short distance anyway. Ford better release some kinda Nurburgring time for the GT500. They already released photos of the GT500 with a nurburgring badge on the back of it. It would be a PR disaster if they dont officially do a lap run.
@acs4llc "heat and bend" is ghetto and can lead to metal fatigue. Adjusting rear toe affects on-the-limit braking characteristics, as well as corner entry, mid-corner and corner exit grip and handling balance, depending on set-up, track conditions and driving technique. LRA doesn't have adjust ability so u end up compromising. What may work in Laguna Seca may not work so well with other tracks or courses. With IRS you can tune easier but with LRA, you are limited. Also LRA tricky when wet
The boss 302 is an amazing car, ford did there home work on this beast. It'll be neat to see what else ford can come up with over the next few years.
Gt350 is reborned

I was in a Boss 302 on the dyno. In person it is the best sound I have ever heard!!! Videos do no justice for the sound and speed of this car.
my wife bought me one of these for my 40th birthday.. it's amazing!! I'd take it over the 2013 GT500 any day!!

I know it's been 11 years since you wrote this but why? I plan on getting a boss 302 2012 in the future haha
I just bought one today 2013 only 16k miles for 40k even
I love how they test the Laguna Seca edition boss 302 at Laguna Seca. I'm curious how the results would be at a different track.

I dont necessarily disagree with you. But the only question is. Is that car really considered a production car? Or is it a tuned GT500?

@acs4llc haha ok I'll bite, how is live axle more advantageous to IRS for circuit racing or autocross? If IRS is not a performance feature, why is it used in high performance cars? Why is live axle not uses in F1 or pure race cars?
Road and track did the lap in 1:39 mins
SpyderRios yeah, I was surprised 1:41. In fact they lapped the regular Boss 302 at 1:40.2 which is faster than this supposed to be the better laguna seca
@Storm7289 Hate to break it to you but I am using Mastercam software as we speak programming a throttle body plate to be run on a Haas VF2. Tell me one thing I said that is incorrect of the Boss.
I'm guessing Randy wasn't commenting on it as much like he normally does, otherwise there would be more footage of him? I really like Randy, he seems like a really neutral and fair driver.
@1vdn992 Now list what position it finished in the drag race and at LS please.
@V8Supercar1 Sweeet. :D Btw, thanks for the info, I might get one. Would you happen to know the price for that car?
You're right it is always gonna be mustang vs. camaro but as we all should know mustangs tend to beat out cars that cost up to twice it's own price (zl1 camaro does a good job too) and when that happens, it's just a publicity bonus.
no WORDS to say !! Simply awesome
His comments, or lack there of, pretty much speak for themselves... Simply an amazing mustang
Which is faster? GT500 Super Snake or Boos? ?????
@CJAEY red and black isn't really specific to any brand it's all been done before
top gear uk should roadtest a mustang from the 2012 line i bet that they would like it much much better than the 2007 line
@acs4llc Whats your point? The Corvette Grand Sport is a badass car and is the total package. Unlike the Boss its even got a full frame and respectable top speed performance.
@xabipp The Laguna seca is a collectors car, not many of them were made therefore, it is more expensive.
Yes and I have # 171 of 750
@Storm7289 You do realize that if the Corvette and Boss run a 20 lap race around LS the Corvette will be lapping the Boss before the race is over based on the lap times.
@foxstalker317 the 302 is a 4 seater the laguna seca package removes the back seats though. The base boss has 4 seats go test drive one.
no sideways action??
@blp2010RS Fort GT? You probably forgot about that one, huh?
@luimarco what are you talking about? a Z06 starts at $74k, if your talking about a base corvette that starts at $49k thats not a Z06. The laguna seca outperforms the base model, is more affordable, and has the better fuel economy.
@Storm7289 Its called a ZO6 in case you dont know.
Wow! Faster than the Cayman R! The Brits should totally review this car already.
Rolling start. The lap time they publish is usually the best of many.
@GavinSpenceR18 well, it would lose, because theyre not competitors. the response to the boss 302 will be the z28 (if they ever make it)
@1vdn992 Tell me why ford cant seem to get the "tracKey" right?
why couldn't they get this guy as a Top Gear America presenter? He'd definitely be an improvement over having Rutledge or Adam
Hopefully the winner of this competition is something with a 6-speed manual and rear wheel drive. IMO that's what a drivers car is
@1vdn992 I thought the last parts of your comment was hilarious...
Did you see the GTR and LFA pass this mustang at 2:35 ?
@V8Supercar1 There also is not a single video of any automotive review magazine reviewing any 2013 model year Mustang. So far the first battlefield was at VIR and SVT's team could not get the 2013 GT500 close to GM's ZL1 lap time. I also am interested to see if Ford ever releases a Nurburgring lap time which I doubt as the Ring is a very hostile environment for a live axle.
The GT500 like all GT500's will have problems hooking up in 1st and 2nd gear so it will be close on the 1/4
Gratz! I just bought the 2013 302 "standard." lol I wanted a back seat and to drive it daily.
@FissionNonStop are you smoking something this isnt an aftermarket tuned car, this car is stock from the factory.
@bakerscak44 The Boss 302 won't be offered with an Automatic option since it's truely a "Driver's Mustang"
So cool seeing this for real. Ive raced this in all the Gran Turismo games, so I know every turn.
@acs4llc live axles better than IRS?? maybe in drag racing, 4WD off-roading or truck pulling! hahaha
@akosiCoco do explain... What's the Red Key?
Test driver's transcript:
"This is good!"
"Torque!"
"Good, broad power band."
"This car is amazingly good."
He didn't need to say anything else.
