I think you’d really enjoy ‘if I get high’ by them, Justin. It’s one of the most incredible vocal masterclasses I’ve heard. Really great work. Worth a listen
Agreed!! Also Lover please stay ( live)
I love that track. Would fit in nicely on The Bends I always think.
Their older stuff around their first album is phenomenal. Songs like Lover, please stay and If I Get High show the uniqueness and classical technique of Connor's voice. They're criminally underrated!
Two of my favourite songs. From their new album i think tomorrow is closed is amazing, especially the acoustic version here on youtube. Reminds me a lot of lover please stay.
God damn it i love connor so much, absolute legend and crazy skilled🔥💚
My fav is still Particles.
I’d say the first album is honestly my least favourite and I think they’re getting better with each one
I think all their albums are phenomenal personally.
For anyone that isn't familiar with this group, their music is quite varied and it's not always this pop-rocky. Please, give them a try and check them out live. Connor's voice is one of the best I've heard in a long time.
They are legends at building that tension in songs. "Free If We Want It" is a song I have on repeat when I want to calm down and/or shut the world out. "Phobia" though is a song by them that fuels me through moments when I'm angry with the world and something you'll enjoy. "Real Love Song" is also a moment of euphoric rock! They have something for everyone. Review more of their stuff please as they are hugely underrated.
Edit: I can't forget "Particles" either. Perfection.
They are immense! I love everything they do and adore certain songs Like You Know Me Too Well, Free If We Want It, Phobia, and Honey Whisky. They are so consistent.
@@linn8370 yeah, I don't know what it is about the song but it has made it to the top of my most listened to song. It's just perfect. A perfect release of tension and emotion.
I never put together that's why I adore Nothing But Thieves. Their songs build to an insane peak, ramp the bridge to a blazing speed, and hit the break at full speed. Incredible design of their music.
Their first album has basically no weak songs. Amazing melodies, some great guitars and a lot of cool ideas. Recently their sound is going more in the direction of electronic pop.
that nerdy breakdown into the type of guitar being used was wonderful to listen to, this was a wonderful video to watch today!
He knows his stuff man!
I know,, I just appreciate the more detailed talks and it helps people learn something new@@ryanllewellyn3472
I'd love to see more of Justin reacting to the NBT singer performances, for example, the stripped back version of "If I get high"
His voice is crazy good
I love their music. They're amazing live and they come across as nice lads. Conor's voice is out of this world.
I'm obsessed with this band ❤ Conor Mason's vocal range is unreal! He reminds me a little of Paul Draper (Mansun) You should absolutely listen to more of their stuff! I highly recommend 'I'm Not Made By Design' 🔥
I’m 60 in November & I think this band is fabulous, they already have a great back catalogue & will get so much better
1:46 “somebody with a nose piercing, etc.” has to be the the most gleefully naive way ever to describe Conor (somebody with the most amazing voice, maybe on the planet). 😅
I have been watching your channel for over a year now and i am not a musician but absolutely love the 'nerdy' breakdowns. Even if you gave a tutorial on the techniques of watching paint dry, i would be riveted to my seat as you explain everything with ease, and in "layman's" terms. I too, (like another subscriber mentioned) miss the "comments day" episodes, and love the "ereeeee"!!! bits 🙂 Love your channel, you bring a ray of sunshine into peoples lives. Thank You!
I love their music...
Its easily one of my favourite bands and they helped me a lot through hard times in my life.
I made a tattoo in their honor!
Nothing But Thieves deserve everything good that'll come their way!
Been following these guys for almost 10 years. They just get better and better, always only bangers. Only. See them if you get a chance everyone, tickets are usually pretty cheap in the US
Yess ! $30 in Cali!
They are one of my favourite bands. My son introduced me to their music 2 years ago and I've been hooked ever since! We went to their concert in Detroit in October and WOW. Small venue, no theatrics like some bands put on, and still one of the top (if not THE) concerts that I've been to. I would love to see them get more recognition over here. Very blessed to have seen them up close at such a small venue.
This makes me so happy! LOVE NBT so much!💃🏼
So glad you made this video. Going to see them in November and constantly reminded how amazing they are...getting hyped!
I absolutely love this band.
I loved this so much! They have such a variety of sounds that they do so well! They are finally in the states and I’m seeing them October 3rd. I have waited so long and I’m so excited it hurts. Best band there is!
Justin! Please never stop with the guitar nerdy stuff!! We love it ❤
Love and appreciate all your insights and talent Justin.
Like a version covering "what can l do when the light go out" show cases his explosive talent. All the best to you Justin in the New Year, Janine
really enjoyed Justin's thoughts on how the keyboards should work within a band and his excitement while describing that guitar was cool.
I saw this lot play at The Garage in Islington, supporting some acoustic pop punk act. They played Itch and a Jeff B cover and I said to myself that they were going to be huge. Evidently they were. Bit over the shop with their sound and songs but none the less, brilliant musicians.
I just saw them live in Auckland and they were out of this world. Conor the lead singer sounds like the album but even better. Band is incredible. Best show I’ve ever been to. Caught the setlist paper when he threw it into the crowd too so that was a bonus! Their track ‘Futureproof’ Is a stunner.
Loved them for years. So glad you’ve reviewed them. Connors voice is incredible.
Their performance of 'Welcome to the DCC' (live for Like A Version) on triple j is amazing as well. His vocal range and control is brilliant. Very high up on my list of bands I wanna see LIVE atm.
One of the best new bands out there. Just astounding.
YESS NOTHING BUT THEIVES LOVE THEM SM❤
Never too much nerdy knowledge🙌
long time casual viewer here mate. HIGHLY recommend you check out more of their stuff especially of their second album era
I remember telling you to listen to these about a year ago and can't believe I missed the video of you doing so , Connor Masons voice is electrifying
Oh wow, i hadn't heard these guys before but I really like them! going to check out more of their stuff, thank you!
They're FANTASTIC!
Great stuff! Hopefully, more NBT reviews in the future! Welcome to the DCC, Amsterdam would be great choices!
Their singer is absolutely phenomenal live
The Thieves are easily the best british rock band around at the moment. Wonderful song writers and absolutely slay it live. Connors voice is second to none.
This is the song that introduced me to NBT. After listening to Dead club city, it opens you up to Conors full vocal range. Such an amazing voice. This song is great, but you should definitely listen to more to appreciate why they are so good 😊
As usual i find new bands from watching your channel haha. I have added these guys to my Apple Music if the rest of their stuff is like this song i will love them
I love these guys so much!
Truly one of the great younger bands around at the moment. NBT are awesome live as well.
I love listening to you. As someone said, you could discuss paint drying, and you would do it with intelligence and eloquence
So refreshing. Thank you.
Always a treat, thanks!
Glad you've covered this. My favourite song of the year. I think NBT influenced heavily by 70s rock - they even namecheck ELO on one of the songs. One of my other favourites of this year (totally different as it's synthwave) is Gunship's 'Monster in Paradise' feat. Milkie Way of Wargasm. Even though it's 80s synth there's this incredible guitar v sax middle section, that's insane!
Finally Justin!!! Thank you! Yes, yes, yes! I love these guys. Couldn't believe it when i found out that they, like me, are from sunny Essex. Seeing them in Madrid next year woo- hooo. Conor Mason is the best vocalist around at the moment. These guys have so many awesone songs, i hope mega fame doesnt change them.
FINALLY got to see them live in Minneapolis this week after being a fan all these years. One of the best shows I’ve seen this year.
My daughter turned me on to this band a few years ago. Incredible talents!
One of my favourite bands around at the moment, Justin, so glad to see you covering them on here.
If you’re looking for more of their tracks to analyse take a look at:
Amsterdam - Broken Machine (2017)
Is Everybody Going Crazy? - Moral Panic (2020)
Welcome to the DCC - Dead Club City (2023)
That Obituary slowly we rot shirt is absolutely amazing!
I agree
Great album
Absolutely the best, finally you're featuring them, too many great songs to name just check out all the back catalogue ,great documentarie on them playing the 02, must see and they, when interviewed are bright funny and thoroughly engaging , I love them and you, Hawkster ❤
Me at about 6:00, outloud, "Wow, do you want to pretend I don't subscribe to Music Nerd Magazine?? Just kidding I love how much you know..." but would never have joked about that because it's the kind of joke that doesn't translate well online. But then you said it, so great.
The Lemon Twigs released an album on 5 May called Everything Harmony. You said you would cover them again...of course, if you don't get to them, there's always the next album....but that would be a great episode. 😌😗 There's a song where they say "through darkness"...👍😃 ("What Happens To A Heart")
I definitely like the '80s vibe of both the song and video today. Their selling point is talent and ability, love it.
This is great, but i think you'd love some of their songs where Connors singing range really comes through, also as always, brilliantly set up and followed by the the rest of the band. They're all fantastically talented.
Please do more NGT their album is album of the year hands down in my opinion ❤
Discovered a live version of Trip Switch in Germany on YT a couple years ago. Stellar version 🤘
I saw them in concert and it was one of the best days of my life! Love NBT ❤
Broken Machine is a dead set modern classic album. Brilliant bunch of musicians.
They are amazing! All their albums are fantastic!
This is really funny 😁 saw you at camp bestival. You guys were awesome
Joe is a big fan of Foo Fighters and you noticed by the guitar... Awesome! Conor's voice is absolutely one of the best voice around the world now. I really appreciate you speak about Nothing but Thieves, they deserve a lot ❤ and you are amazing 🥰 Obituary shirt lol
They are the best band in the world at the minute
Holy shit, Justin, you're so insightful! And ready good insight on similarities to Lindsey's guitar playing, I've noticed that myself! I've just basically discovered this band and I think they are really great.
NBT are amazing! I got to see them this summer in Denmark, and it was really great. Would love to see you check out some of their more rock-based stuff - Conor has an insane voice, and he only shows it a little bit in Overcome.
Anyone else think it sounds like The Killers?
Love the nerdy breakdowns! 🥰
No it doesn't sound like The Killers to me.
only this song maybe, the rest of their stuff is definitely different
Yes. Me. Glad someone said it.
Justin, seriously no one has Conor's range, they are the best UK band since Queen, while they don't sound like Queen, they have the seem musical principle of Queen is that every album is different and each time providing some thing different, they express some much more emotion and energy to the likes of Radiohead, so are totally different to Radiohead (as Radiohead are unique) just as NBT are.
You HAVE to listen to Trip Switch by this band. Lead singer does amazing things with his voice that you just aren’t hearing in this song. Please oh please.
I used to be a big fan of their older stuff but their singer has always sounded phenomenal. He’s a big Jeff Buckley fan and you can hear the influence on his singing. Amsterdam, Wake Up Call, If I Get High and Itch are all great songs! Much prefer their earlier grittier stuff.
I love Nothing but Thieves. ❤ I think that You should see "If I Get High" Live Session. You'll be in love with Conor's vocal.
Yess such a tune and really showcases Conor at his best
Bloody love them
I've never heard Nothing but Thieves (I nearly wrote Listen Like Thieves) before, so I listened to a few more songs just now to get a more fair impression of them. Ultimately, their music is not really my thing, but his voice... Exquisite! Like a balm on your troubled soul. ...and that's as poetic as I'll get today 🙂
Did you try "If I get high enough "?
@@SpeedMechanic No, but sure, I'll go do that!
@@SpeedMechanic I listened, and I guess I still think the same. His voice is amazing, and hauntingly beautiful, gives-you-shivers-kinda-voice, but the songs in themselves are not something that sticks with me. Too... non-descript, kinda...
I've listened to four songs with them now, but after one listen each, I can't hum any parts of them back, or remember which was which, sorta...
It's different from, for example... When I heard The Darkness' Hazel Eyes for the first time, after one single listen I could hum the entire thing back, because it's so distinct it sticks, right away. Can't mistake it for any other song. Not comparing in other ways, since they're quite different in style, just comparing "stickability".
But yeah... that's the problem I often have with music like NBT, it's competent, it's pretty while listening, the voice is awesome, and still... doesn't stick.
But that's just me. It's actually good, so it should suit a lot of other people.
Try 'I'm Not Made By Design' ❤️
@@H643 Okay, I'll do that 🙂 Apparently, this is what I'm doing tonight 🙂
Nice n interesting reaction. Love anything NBT. Each of their albums has a different colour to it - and all are great. Hope you can react to more from them.
Do check them out doing an acoustic or a Capella, his voice is phenomenal
Their new album is superb, but you should deffo hear their older stuff too. Listen to their songs 'Itch' and 'Amsterdam'!
I’ve heard these live and liked them. Wasn’t sure why. Possibly because the influences you described, Justin, are all ones I like. In particular I enjoyed your analysis of what makes The 1975 song so appealing. Please do nerdy as you make it interesting.
They're the best band in the world right now in my opinion. Everything they do is gold. Connor Mason's voice is incredible, lyrics are great, guitar is amazing, drums too. Listen to I am not made by design and If I get High.
Phenomenal live band.
Check out the version of If I Get High with just the singer and the guitarists.
there can never be enough nerd stuff in your videos, they're my favourite parts!
They are an amazing band.
I'm not into nothing but thieves but the vocalist is absolutely fantastic 👌
They’re the kind of band that could be the next big global band. Front man definitely has charisma…and a great voice.
I've been following Nothing But Thieves since the beginging. To see them progress from playing infront of 60 people to The O2, which they played 2 years ago, has bee amazing. I can truly say that they haven't released one bad song.
Ever since I first heard them 3 years ago I’ve been kicking myself for not finding them sooner. The first time I saw them live was their O2 show and although that was obviously amazing I really wish I’d seen them at Chinnery’s back in the day, it must have been fantastic! I saw 2 of their acoustic sets this year, and I really wish I’d seen the whole band in a small venue like that. I’m really happy they’re finally getting the attention they deserve, but I don’t think I’ll be able to afford to see them live for much longer 😕
That thom yorke comparison is cool.
Kinda wish sometimes thom pulls down his walls and sing something you could say “cheesy”. Like singing karaoke drunk and no one knows about his radiohead schtick
😝
Listen to his cover of Nobody does it better
If you like NBT I recommend you listen to some of their other stuff. Perhaps, particles or Amsterdam. They have some real bangers. The guys range is bonkers.
You need to check Conor’s voice in acoustic versions. He’s insane!
They covered shawn mendes "in my blood" whilst in Radio 1's live lounge a few years ago which can be found on youtube, its a beautiful version of the song with added violins and strings and shows Conors range beautifully, well worth a listen
When I first heard it on the radio it was that bridge, and I was sure it was Sam Fender (which I love) and then I was hooked
Thank you for this excellent analysis. I didn't know you could get guitars with 24 frets. I have learned something new. I really treasure new knowledge but sometimes if I don't use it very often it slips into the realm of the forgotten. I think I'll remember this gem - the accoustic guitar I currently own has 21 frets, I never thought to count them before. I'm a novice guitar player.
Oh damn finally. I think the best song is "if i get high" less rock but incredible.
Loved your guitar geek moment. :D (Very educational, actually - great analysis of the song too. I've really got into Nothing But Thieves over the past couple of years even though they're a little more pop than my usual listening.
Love this track, and it probably just pips their track Amsterdam as my favourite of theirs, and Amsterdam is a cracking track!
Great song and nice to see they are getting some exposure
You should listen amsterdam or i'm not made by design. It's their best showcase of abilities
I heard about them in the Rick Beato channel, he was covering the top 10 from spotfy and analyzing some of the songs. They are really good, specially live. Sounds some times like the killers and daft punk.
Good band! Great analysis, thanks!
Cool sound great band
hit the nail on the head I had said its so Sam fender videography wise
Have you ever listened to Gang of Youths? Aussie band, emotive like this, but the singers voice comes from his boots. Angel of 8th Ave probably good starting point, but the album (Angel In Real-time) was a departure from their previous style (What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out is a good example from that era, but also Achilles Come Down is popular despite sounding completely different) but probably my absolute fave is the live version of Spirit Boy they did for Amazon.
I am still amazed they are called "rock". It's a straight-up pop band.
Who doesn't like a nerdy guitar breakdown????
And I'll be looking for more of their stuff now as I hadn't heard of them before so 👍
I picked up a Dan Armstrong bass in (I think) 1978 - Guitar Player magazine had a feature on it that same month, so I bought a copy while I was buying my bass! That article mentions the smoky Lucite one, stating that there were only 8 produced; 4 six strings and four basses!
Somehow reminds me of Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer” and Richard Marx’s “Should’ve Known Better”
