The Libertines have returned after 8 years with some new music. Today I'm looking at their song Run Run Run. I previously haven't been much of a fan of The Libertines music in the past, and I have a few theories as to why, some of which involve Pete Doherty's notorious persona and reputation, but my mind may have been changed...

Thank you so much for doing this. I requested them once or twice so it's really nice to see you've covered them. Glad you liked the song! I must admit I'm very guilty of doing the major to minor thing all the time 🤣
Nah thanks mate 😂
lovely Atkin there
Justin, the tune you're whistling and can't figure out is "I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life". The Libertines took inspiration from the Turtles. Hey, can't make it more British than a 1967 California band, ask Paul McCartney about it ! Immediately, feel happy... together. But you're not gonna read this anyway because you're on tour.
"I'm disgusted by that side of myself" - Yeah liking the country you're from is just so disgusting. Honestly mate ya sound like Rick from the Young Ones. So right on!
I think Pete comes across as a very genuine, honest man and love that about him.
Years ago I was with some mates in a bar in Kentish Town and randomly Pete turned up, everyone was excited and he did a few impromptu songs. Afterwards my mate was in the bathroom at the urinal & Pete entered and stood at the urinal next to him. My friend muttered ‘sh*t’ and Pete asked him ‘you ok mate’ to which my friend said ‘yeah it’s just I get stage fright and y’know, you’re Pete Doherty’. Pete then replied ‘Don’t worry mate, it’s a really common problem’ and he proceeded to offer him something which I can’t put down here. Immediately afterwards my mate said he seemed like a really nice fella
To me, as a young lad, Pete Doherty was the embodiment of romanticism. He oozed this poetic sense of wonder and awe - somehow managing to persuade a generation that the ugly was beautiful if you looked hard enough. He represented something bigger than himself; the tortured and misunderstood artist. Which was ironic in a sense, because from any outsiders’ perspective, the torment he was experiencing with addiction was the opposite of poetic and romantic.
I’ll always be thankful for Pete, The Libs and Babyshambles, because it initiated a real transformative stage in my life of growth, exploration and identity.
Same
I agree with you both 100% but must say that John Morrison really drove this point home and I really appreciate that ❤
Was about to type something similar myself, you summed it up perfectly.
He was a heroin addict mate
Torture and addiction are neither romantic nor poetic. Grow up.
Peter Doherty and The Libertines have long been my favourite band, highly underrated in my opinion, there just isn't lyrics and romanticism like that anymore!
Up the Bracket is a masterpiece. Nuff said.
*aren’t
‘An ending fitting for the start. You twist and tore our love apart.’ It’s a beautifully tragic line.
You must do an interview with Doherty !!!!!!!
I had the pleasure of supporting Pete in 2019 band gig and more recently solo on his acoustic tour. He’s a true gentleman & artistic visionary. One of a kind x
What a fab story. Lucky you and perhaps lucky Pete too
Oh cool! What's the name of your band? It's been a few years, are you still going?
Yet is still covering up and lying about what happened to his friend that went over a balcony. This despicable human is far from a gentleman.
@@DamnDealDoneyes tragic. It’s already been investigated, cooperated with authorities & he’s offered to have a one to one with Mark’s mother. So I’m not sure what you expect. RIP & deep condolences to his family
@@Kippysmuse he casually stepped over a dying friend, picked something up off the floor next to him, then ran. Didn't check on him, comfort him or ring an ambulance. Then returned to the house and recorded a video about getting away with murder. Pete Doherty fans are absolute mor0ns. The guy is an average song writer and a garbage human being at best.
I met Carl the other day after my band played his new bar/venue in Margate. Top man and chatted for ages. Love this new tune. 👏🏻
I've always loved the Libertines and Babyshambles. To me Pete is a poet, a great songwriter and and a really interesting person. It annoyed me to see him become tabloid fodder focused on his addictions. Glad to see you give this great band another chance, Justin.
I'm from Margate, Musician, even played with yr band Justin, at SxSW, Texas.! Peter is a big friend of mine, I saw it all down here, and I'm so glad he's got it together - big up Jai (mgmt) Carl, and the rest of the boys, and special mention to Pete's Missus, Katia, who stuck by him throughout. ❤
Pete's first solo album shows pretty awesome song writing chops.
The Darkness and The Libertine - My 2 favourite bands as a teenager in the 00's!
Yes i was just thinking 2003 was the year I remember nme putting both bands on the cover (but of course The libertines was always in the nme more then the strokes )as well .
I had a few. Muse (favourite still), The Darkness, Radiohead, The Libertines & nobody asked me. But I'll share anyway.
Pete Doherty is a poet, in my opinion
The first two Libertines albums are quintessential British rock. They are the soundtrack to the 00s. They hold their place with the all time great British rock records. They’re undeniable.
Quintessential crap more like
First album is good. Second album is pretty rubbish.
Down in Albion by BabyShambles is magic too.
To you, to most people it's better. Was reviewed better.
I adore the Libertines and especially Pete. I'm a failed musician & recovering addict as well. A story I heard about Pete after he'd been kicked out of the band, he was broke, had pawned his gear, was just lost... and he was going around to his friends just trying to find a guitar to borrow. Not so he could perform, not to busk & make money, but just for himself. Like a child finds comfort in holding a teddy bear. The artists I respect the most are the ones that would be making music even if they weren't successful, because it's the only thing they can do. It's so engrained in them that there's no way they could just put it down. Kind of like Anton from the Brian Jamestown Massacre. Anyway, I just love the sincerity of the Libertines. Their music is not contrived and they don't seem to chase trends. The Libertines make me wish I was English..
Run run run is a great song. Didn't know they still had it in them.
Carl had it in him a year ago, a jackels track
I can't wait for the new Libertines album. I *REALLY* liked the last one, actually -- obviously the first two are fantastic but I felt that "Athems for Doomed Youth" was an incredibly strong LP that was criminally overlooked by a lot of people. Real grower of an album.
When I saw the drummer from the Libertines years ago with a Misfits T Shirt on I asked him about Danzig. He said he bloody loves Danzig. I know I sound like a nob but it made me listen to them again. I think this new single is ace. Their hotel / recording studio is meant to be great. I think they would love to show you around Justin. Big kisses xx
Their voices and guitar playing are just so perfect for each other.
I never really got massively into the libertines back in the day, even though all of my mates was into them. I went to see them about 2 years ago and it really blew me away. They were loud, exciting and full of energy.
Were
One of my all time favorite bands, we’ll never have the good old days back but this is still a good sound. Those early Babyshambles gigs were absolute chaos, never really been to anything like them since, good times! It’s awesome to see him happy and healthy these days.
Cheese & Bordeaux instead of Smack & a Crackpipe... and I'm loving every minute of it. Good for him. Such a likable lad.
Those 05/06 early Babyshambles gigs were unreal, I went to nearly 100 lol
@@chrismurray1836 I wish I was there with you Chris. Been to busy with my own destruction at the time. lol.
@@chrismurray1836same! The first one I went to was in Glasgow, which combined the energy of a typical Glasgow crowd with a Babyshambles audience. It was chaos lol
Their gigs were certainly chaotic but when a few people went down in the pit at one show I was at, Pete noticed and stopped playing until everyone was back on their feet.
So glad they're back! Thanks for the heads-up Justin!
The 2nd Libertines album always was my favourite, a banger from beginning to end
Thanks for a great video Justin. Very insightful on many levels. Love your channel. 😎
Love a good Major>Minor, makes me feel like I'm in a musical everytime.
Met Peter Do quite a few times (living in the same area in France). Great songwriter, entertainner, and lovely lad. Let me played his 60s epiphone guitar after a gig of his. Great memories
He was a great song writer and lyricist, there is no denying it.
Better than I thought, very catchy chorus.
My band the caymans met pete on thursday, he listened to a few demos and asked if we’d support him that night, great man!
I've met a lot of musicians over the years, Pete was the most polite, personable and 'in the moment' of the lot. He was generous with his time and took a lot of time to speak to me and maintain eye contact, it was very different an experience to the hurried, hectic 10 second meet and greet vibe of meeting other people. I find it difficult talking to just about anyone as I'm a bit socially awkward (ADHD related), but I felt absolutely at ease. He was very invested in the moment, calm and centred and I'll always be grateful. I gave him an old poetry book my mum found at the op shop and he appreciated it so hugely, started reading it on the spot.
Have You thought about writting a book ?
@@jota55581 On what topic?
Listen again to the ‘Up the Bracket’ and ‘The Libertines’ albums and I’m pretty confident (if just shy of promise) you’ll really appreciate it, if not really love it! With that in mind, although I love hearing your thoughts on new songs, it’d also be great to hear your thoughts on older music that you either haven’t listened to or might’ve previously dismissed for whatever reason. Keep up the good work Mr Hawkins 🫡
Adore the music Doherty creates. It' raw and stays personal in a way that it has an identity and fucks over the bothers of new waves by just being itself, staying the same, and in that way becoming the original. It's somewhat classic and still being now, in world changing day to day. Nostalgic! Great show Justin, carry on. Greetings from Norway.
Fun banter, as a guitarist I appreciate you explaining the changes so well. Good to hear they came out with another album.
Anthems has worn well sonce 2015 ... this song sounds exciting, thanks Justin &~
One of my all time favourite bands. They create a particular feeling that no other band does. Cannot wait for their new album
The intro lick is getting more intricate every episode
Albion by Babyshambles is such a beautiful song, never got into Doherties entire discography but I had that album and played the hell out of that track
Music When the Lights Go Out is amazing as well
that full album was top class
Justin you are the best thing since sliced bread. Thank you so much for trying to understand Pete’s plight. Have you watched his interview on the late late show (Ireland) it is so touching, awful and revealing. Never stop riding brother ✌️
an understated part of the Libertines is that there is sincerity in the posturing, its not like they're upper class guys with no issues, they really did live that way, I've always read it less about pretending to be punk and more about embracing, exaggerating that image of themselves and sort of representing that demographic, giving the underclass some much needed cool guy representation rather than glorify something they're not
that major to minor move is a Libertines trademark - happens in a few songs and in the Carl and Pete solo works.
Yeah nobody else changes key
@@toysindahood😅
@@toysindahoodWestlife invented the key change. Beethoven alluded to it
@@toysindahoodyou fucking tool. Literally no one said they invented it. They said it's just a common feature of their songs, damn
I've always thought Pete a very talented writer, musician & performer, and rooted for him through his tumultuous times. Up The Libertines!
I use to think pete would be dead before he was 30 then 35 now hes 44 and doing better than ever, happy for him. And the libs, i wonder if the shambles will get together for a 20th anniversary
One thing that impresses me in all your "Justin Rides Again"-videos is your ability to replicate every guitar-riff only after listing to a few seconds. Thats really impressive!
He's a real professional musician. Producer Rick Beato has a channel where he does the same thing (when he's not interviewing people)
It's pretty easy if you can identify notes/chords. Justin has been playing guitar for well over 20 years so it's second nature to him.
@@kevinkibble8342 for me as a non-musician it’s looks impressive
Question for Comments Day: Which is more important in songwriting, Imagination or life Experience? Or a bit of both?
I think both. Being able to create character and stories that have their roots in reality…and that you the songwriter can relate to. But not necessarily 100% autobiographical.
I remember being in sixth form in 2005 when I heard about Pete Doherty for the first time; the fact that he made being bookish and eloquent cool, totally changed my life. It can be hard for young people when they don’t have those things represented in ways which connect.
When I discovered Pete Doherty 20 years ago I immediately fell in love with him and his music. I felt he was a genuine, spontaneous and talented poet but with a kind of fire inside him. Besides, every time I've met him he has been really nice with me ❤
P.s.: seen the Darkness twice around 2009 at Shepherd's Bush Empire. Amazing musicians ❤
Recently discovered this track and it’s on our rehearsal list greatsong
Saw Pete solo very recently. I'm just glad to see him in what seems to be genuine recovery. He was great onstage. The audience were awful, sad that his music brings out the worst in people. It was quite fascinating to experience. It flowed between people being totally uninterested as he played new material, then eruption in elation as he played the hits, and then swiftly back to boredom when more new material was played, to which picking fights and getting thrown out was their idea of a good time. You could cut the tension on the floor with your teeth.
yep he has always attracted laddish dicks, and especially now that other guitar band options are rarer and rarer they'll circle around the Libertines just waiting for the singles. I blame the rise to tabloid fame that came between the first two albums.
Felt like that when I went to watch liam gallagher at Knebworth, saw more fights there than any gig or festival I've been to. To be fair though everybody sang along with his post oasis stuff, just not as mental as the oasis stuff.
I think I might be approaching the age where cheese becomes a legitimate interest.
I’m at the age where cheese is life
@@SaraMeMeMeeeee 😂❤
Hasn't cheese always been of the utmost importance? 🙂 Case in point, I bought cheese today for my last money!! 😀
@@MariaFrancesca I admit, it is already quite an important part of my life, maybe I'll learn to make it! 😄
And a hygiene issue.
Such a talent just twiddling away on the guitar, have you ever thought of an acoustic album ?
What a soothing voice justin has❤ really love these podcasts
I wouldn't have known that was Pete D in the thumbnail 😮
I love how Justin can deliver such glowing, yet backhanded, compliments. "I'm really into this.... wait where's that from? Yeah, so derivative, but so catchy!"
It’s worth noting that Run Run Run is actually a Carl Barat track, which he also sings. Pete’s solo album is some of his best work, definitely worth checking out
Sweet Enola Gay! That is rather great - the progression in the chorus is very reminiscent of another bloody good song which I can't quite place - its a yearning feeling! Surprisingly rather smashing, thank you Juuuuuustin Hawkins rides agaaaaaaain ❤
Justin they have a hotel called the Albion Rooms with a studio in it too
Didn’t realize it til I watched this but this song is reminding me a bit of the album Carl made when he was doing Carl Barat and the jackals like ten ish yrs ago. I’m into it
Lost count how many time I’ve seen The Libs and they never disappoint
I live about 100 yards from their hotel.
It's called The Albion Rooms
Intro: I think I could actually watch you do THAT to the guitar for 10 minutes, no problems whatsoever!
Peters a great songwriter. 😊
The song you're looking for in the chorus is: Happy together by the turtles.
"I can't see me loving nobody but you..."
Love the libertines. Loved all they’ve done.
I thought you wouldn't be mentioning the claps and then, at 08:46...👏👏...👏!!! Yay!😄
8:18 - "Happy Together" - The Turtles.
@justinhawkinsridesagain Justin I know the melody you're almost hearing at 8:17 and couldn't put a finger on. It's The Turtles chorus "I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life".
Love your work!
There may have been an element of posing to the early Libertines, but they were quite young. It’s almost inevitable to have a certain amount of posing when you’re 21. But even back then they struck me as mostly honest, interesting, and intelligent. Doherty’s whole MO was very intriguing to me as an American. It had a big emotional impact.
The Margate hotel in question is the Albion Rooms. It's a lovely space with a great bar and gig space. Played there a couple of times myself and one of the regulars, Murray, even played at my wedding. Come visit!
Great review
The Libertines have always been excellent - they are part of history and deserve total respect as a musical force.
long live the Libertines.
Good song! It’s like they never went away. Love a bit of Libertines every now and then. Will definitely be adding this to a playlist or two. Funnily enough, I was listening to ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ today. Think that’s always going to be my favourite song by them. Can’t beat the harmonica at the end! 😂
Nice to see he's made it out the other side of addiction, a great British songwriter
The Libertines and The Darkness both defined British rock in the early '00s for me.
I was trying to think what it was reminding me of and then you hit the nail on the head, it really does sound like Shed Seven.
My boyfriend made me aware of you...we two gen Xers adore your channel. (Well, as the woman I adore, he cracks up and makes comments on your chops, analysis etc.) Anyway, keep up the groovy work.
Thanks mate I’m a huge fan and Pete is a beautiful poet if you give him a chance xxx
Went to see pete in oxford few months met him in the pub wicked show sound bloke time for everyone
His dog too. 😂.
Good gigs
Never arrived so early...although my wife might tell you different.
Anyway, yes, the band have a hotel/bar/recording studio in sunny Margate.
I love The Libertines. I've visited the hotel in Margate, its called The Albion Rooms. There's a bar there - Wastelands and The Libs also have a recording studio in the building ❤
I always loved the crisp drum sound of the libertines, not sure I like the sound of the drums but the tune is a banger
The Libertines don’t have a bad song or album. Can’t wait for the new record and hopefully a US tour.
Annoying for some, I don't think Pete is allowed in the US due to his criminal record so I'd doubt you'll see him anytime soon
@@jacobjellis1875 Thanks. I hadn't considered that. I guess I wont hold my breath for a US tour.
They have opened The Libertines Hotel in Margate, the Cab Pulls up outside it at the end of the Film
Saw yesterday The Darkness in Hamburg. You where great!
Posing might have done The Libertines some good. Unfortunately (for their health) they seem to have lived the wild life they wrote and sang about in their songs. Love this new tune and can't wait for the album (so surreal to have new Libs music on the way). Thanks for the lovely analysis as always JHRA!!!!
Did not think that was Pete for a while there, ah the greatest band that never was, great live band saw them in their heyday a good night
The claps at 8:47 are the happy days theme tune claps! Fits every song ever written. Probably
There are lovely videos on UA-cam of Pete Doherty playing his album The Fantasy Life of Poetry & Crime (with Frédéric Lo).
Up the bracket is a fantastic album one of my favourites the 2nd album is good as well i didnt really get into the 3rd album, babyshambles first album was great too, I saw babyshambles and pete doherty live many many time probablymore than ive ever seen any other bsnd and artist, the gigs were always very chaotic but great
Dirty pretty things album was good as well
Something tells me their album next yr will be quite special!
485,000🎉🎉🎉,while I was at passport control, returning from a great gig in Berlin 😂
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Don't know anybody else feels the same: you just jump into the jolly mood mode whenever JH does his (sometimes hilarious) claps!
This entire album is amazing. Actually the best music they ever made imo.
I ❤ The Libertines.
And the hotel is The Albion Rooms in Margate. They have a recording studio in there that they recorded this album in.
Justin, I think it’s “Sun Hits the Sky” by Supergrass that you were thinking of??
I just got into Shooter's Nation. Its a minor classic and no one told me. So is the first Peter Doherty solo record.
Libertines rock!
I can feel FIFA game royalties in their future with this one.
You've nailed it
Hahah FIFA are pretty good at choosing tunes tbf
Never heard of them but I liked it, thanks!
Check out their first 2 albums, absolute masterpiece's.
I love that song. I love that minor 4 chord too...
Back in uni I was That Girl, who had a collection of all their unreleased stuff on dodgy bootleg CDs (there was _so much_ of it). Legs 11, an unreleased album, was way up there with their official releases and even surpassed a lot of it. When they split up and Pete started Babyshambles, Fuck Forever was my anthem.
Justice for mark blanco
Great song
