- You have two choices if you're failing a class using the GI Bill. Either you drop the class, or you keep going and take the F.
Don't miss the dangers of both of these options.

If you fail a class it will only hurt your transcript/GPA. If you withdraw, you will have to pay back… Choose wisely
100%
Thank you this gives me peace ill just try harder and see if i can get this done
You got it! You can pass. Don't settle.
WGU prob & stats brought me to this video. Thanks for the info
Lol. I feel you on the stats. Happy to help.
Good video Vet!
Thanks boss!
This brought me so much peace of mind man... I am in this exact situation. I am already enrolled for the fall semester and have submitted my veteran certification request to receive funding for those courses; however, I am for sure going to fail one class that I have taken this summer and was worried about how this would affect these fall courses that I am expected to start next week. Thanks for this video. You're a life saver!
Happy to relieve some of your stress, Chris. Failing a class isn't the end of the world (or your benefits). It's just important to learn from it and don't let it happen again, cuz it could leave you in a bad spot if you run out of benefits before finishing a program.
@@jasonburds does this apply to a masters program where I take 1 class at a time?
@@dhuggallday21 yes. Don't drop.
@@jasonburds ok cool. Im going through a situation where the program I am in is not what was advertised to me. Thank you for your help
@@dhuggallday21 might be worth filing a complaint with the VA so others don't get screwed too
So much relief knowing this
Happy to provide some relief
I think you still have to do Academic Renewal when you transfer whenever you get an F. I might screwed up this semester by dropping from 2 classes
I have two online classes (6 credit hours total) I started them and was doing fine but I stopped doing any work because it got too much with my job and family.
I am sorry to hear that. Talk to your prof. to see if there is anything you can do to work it out and pass the classes.
I don’t want to pass the class. I do not have time to do any work. I started a new job and it was easy at first then got to be a LOT. I just don’t want to be stuck paying for them when I Fail. It’ll be the first classes I’ve ever failed in my GI bill or ever for that matter.
So even if you fail all your classes but you show up all the way till the end, you won’t be penalized? You can just take them the next semester but i might run out of GI benefits before I graduate unless I take extra classes every semester and summer. Correct?
Hopefully this is a hypothetical example... You're very likely to run out of benefits if this happens. If you fail with a normal class load, doubling up is only going to make the problem worse. If you find yourself in a position where you're likely to fail multiple classes in a semester, I would call 888-GIBILL-1 to ask for their best advice and confirm there will be no penalty. Failing every class is a different animal than just one.
Fuck man this is just what I needed rn actually
Gotchu fam
@@jasonburds Finals week this week and I'm doing good in all classes except one. Math is trash
@@WtfReal I believe in you man. Study hard for a week and squeeze by.
I'm taking one 11 week graduate class and because of covid it went from a hybrid class to a zoom held class. It is 6 credits which makes me full time and receive 100% BAH. If I were to fail the class would I owe anything back?
Based on it being part of your degree program and assuming you finish the semester and take an F, according to VA guidelines you won't owe anything. You'll just have a zero productivity rating for your GI Bill that term.
Do you know how this works with Troops into transportation for cdl school?
YOU JUST APPLY WITH THE TROOPS TO TRANS. THEY'LL DO THE WORK. UNLESS IF YOURE OUT THE SERVICE THEN YOU MIGHT NEED VA APPROVAL/VERIFICATION LETTER WITH THAT DD214
What happens if I fail two classes in one term. I’m praying I get at least a D in both of those classes, but in the event I end up failing both classes what happens? I finished them both, but I’m just nervous about running out of benefits like you said
You'll have to retake them.
I got a 2.0 this semester but a 3.43 last semester totaling for 2.75 for the year, am I at risk of probation and/or benefit suspension?
No, my understanding is that if you're cumulative drops to 2.0 you'll be at risk. So just bring it up next semester.
@therealjasonburds what happens if I fail all four classes and already on academic suspension?
Question: do I still have to take 12 credits during the summer to be considered a full time student in order to get the BAH ? ( I’m planning to take the 10 week term during the summer )
Negative. Full time is different in the summer because the term is shorter. Check with your education counselor at your school to find out what is considered full time.
@@jasonburds thank you
I take classes online. What happens if I stop doing the assignments?
That's the same as not showing up to class. You'll be on the hook.
What i want to drop out of the program, do I have to pay anything back?
No. You can change programs, not enroll in the next semester etc. You just can't drop mid semester.
How does this work with OJT/ apprenticeship? Is there a way not too pay back?
How do you fail at OJT?
Hi, I am taking an 8 week class and my 3rd week into class, I have decided it wasn't for me.
I am suffering from health issues, and the class is too tough for me. I feel like withdrawing since I am now having to choose between my health and the class.
I want to take the class again, but at a slower pace where I don't have to do 5 or 6 assignments a week while doing a part-time job.
Should I withdraw?
This is a tough one. You really only get one chance to withdraw with no consequences. Have you used that one chance already? Is might be worth taking the F and redoing it. Maybe getting a passing grade is still doable if you play the health card with your professor.
Watch this video before you do anything - dropping the class might be an expensive mistake

@therealjasonburds
Hey, thanks for responding to me!
I withdrew one time from a class before getting the gi bill. This is my first time using the gi bill, and I am taking another class as well, which I am passing. The course that I am struggling with is also taking time away from my other class.
I am one class away from my degree, but if I withdraw, I will be two classes away.
I am planning on going to get my masters degree, so I have to choose wisely.
how does this work for a trade school?
Shouldn't be any different.
I plan on withdrawing from a class and using the "6 credit hour exclusion" so that I don't owe anything, how do I do this?
It's automatically applied to your first withdrawl of classes. So just make sure it counts and you drop from all the classes you need to withdraw from. I messed up by withdrawing from one class, then a few days later withdrawing from 2 more. I should have done it all at once.
So what happens if you fail all the classes of the semester
All classes?? Well, from what I understand as long as you continue to attend and keep your GPA above 2.0, the same is true. However, if you drop below 2.0 you go on probation and benefits may be suspended.
I don't have an F yet I'm just worried about a 72 I thought anything under 80 in a single class would screw me
Nah, Cs get degrees. Lol. Don't be so hard on yourself.
What if Im not failing any classes and I just want to drop out of school completely (using post 9/11)?
Then you need to watch this
ua-cam.com/video/I7iYwXRYp9I/v-deo.htmlsi=or8dshsDOsoc_cBR
I’m in horticulture and landscaping they had me taking liberal arts math and that requires that you have a C 70% for passing D letter grade is no longer suffice
It's been "Cs get degrees" as long as I have known.
Does GI Bill run out
Yes. You only have 36 months.
But what if failing a class means I'm not a full-time student anymore I passed 3 and failed one. I heard I will have to owe all the money back. I'm a post-9/11 gi bill student by the way
Failing a class doesn't change your enrollment status. If you started the semester as a full time student and began failing a class middle of the semester, as long as you finish that class and finish the semester with all courses as a full time student, you should be fine. It's only if you drop/withdraw or stop attending classes that you will need to pay back.
@@jasonburds okay! Thank you for informing me I appreciate it
@@darrrkangel the easiest way to verify is call the VA, GI Bill line. I can't answer every nuanced question. Gotta bring those grades up.
