For some advice to newer day 1 Raiders, I’d say one thing to keep in mind is to not overcomplicate any of the mechanics. Think about every raid (outside of Last Wish)- every mechanic has 1-2 functions, not 3-5. Typically, an encounter will be built around a singular mechanic for the first 1-3 encounters before adding all in for a fight. A Riven is pretty atypical for a day 1 raid-don’t overcomplicate the mechanics, try to keep it simple
Doesn't Riven legit only have two mechanics? Cleanse specific symbol and call eyes to other team? Then rinse and repeat in reverse for other rooms team?
@@halo3dia true but it also has split rooms with separate teams, an ending phase with more phases / eyes and traveling through the pits to the next rooms on specific times. so yeah, only 2 phases but a bit more behind the 2. also the cleansing of the symbols also has multiple parts, with the guider and guided, eye of riven and the lookthrough glass.
@@halo3dia there is also mechanics involving stunning riven to be able to do damage and see her eyes which is necessary. As well a mechanic/non typical damage phase where you will have to shoot rivens scabs to continue/do extra damage to her
For those wondering, if the trend stands like the last two raids we had, the day 1 for witch queen should take place on the second Saturday of the season, or March 5th 2022.
adding onto the 'don't worry about boss dps' advice - because of contest mode, bungie can plan out buffs/player dps/boss hp so that you will almost definitely need 4 dps phases to kill the boss. we've found much more success making sure we can consistently survive 3 dps phases first, before taking ways to optimize for damage (ex. use your heavy weapons to kill minibosses. you can figure out how much you can 'cheat' and save ammo for the boss later down the line. use a riskrunner to stay alive, even if it prevents you from using an exotic heavy, etc.)
this exactly, my crew cleared day 1 atraks because we all started running riskrunner in order to get the arc resistance against all the fallen and the sniper shanks in specific
Day 1 raids are the best activity destiny has to offer. It’s really fun to do. But for any of those trying to get a clear, the number 1 thing I recommend teams do is just have a set team. I got my first day 1 clear because I went in with a set team. It really goes a long way when you’re attempting the raids. Thanks for the Video datto. I think it’s time you get a worlds first datto. It’s coming soon
7:50 this absolutely happened to us in day 1 DSC. Our way of clearing replication was screwing us up every other run and no one wanted to change it, so I made the call to swap Operators and clear buffs in a different way. We got it the next run. Sometimes people in your group may be struggling with their roles but won’t say anything. You should always be looking out for other people
Also, to help with staying alive, take a note of the "burn" you die to (solar, arc, etc) and put on the related resist mod on your chest piece. And therefore, have one chest piece of each burn ready to go for day 1 (maybe even stasis this year?).
Also play paranoid, with competition mode active something that looks like it can kill you will kill you; look out for potential threats and move out of the way…and tell your teammates to move too
Something to note is changing the element of our (masterworked) armor pieces will only cost 10,000 glimmer and an upgrade module post WQ, so if you don't have 4 seperate chest pieces or just have a killer roll on a specific one - make sure to bring upgrade modules with to swap affinities on the fly.
This is one of my favorite videos of yours. It’s really well written - the branching points off the Garden boss example was slick. Loved how you broke down about how cross communication works in Destiny raiding. The section that I took to heart the most is being accountable for your actions. For people that don’t have the luxury for a predefined group, this is so big and I couldn’t ask for a better discussion on the topic. I always appreciate the videos about the game at large, but Datto sharing his experiences and giving us a peek on how he ticks is so good. Loved this.
Also important to note that this is the first day one raid EVER with infinite primary ammo. Take that into account when deciding what weapons to bring in.
@@dn272 If you can run two special weapons that both have lead from gold, spec scavenger mods for both, and finders for your heavy and special then you almost never run out of ammo
@@VexChoccyMilk a good double special loadout I use is witherhoard and retraced paths. Large ammo reserves so good ammo economy for specials and either weapon is good for low tier ad clear. Stack them together and you can take on larger targets up to mini bosses. Works even better if you run a solar subclass with font of might with a solar heavy
@@VRGUILE To me Retraced Paths runs out of ammo rather quickly. I would definitely use Witherhoard unless I need that exotic heavy weapon then I use Ignition Code with blinding grenades and Cartesian Coordinate for burst damage both with lead from gold and vorpal weapon. If there are lots of champs or tons of ads in a chokepoint I will run Anarchy and double up on grenade ammo finders and scavs and run whatever weapon stuns champs.
Honestly, pointing out your own weakness with relics is the exact confidence boost i really needed, im good at putting the puzzle together, but im awful at finding the pieces.
I'm happy that you mentioned eating healthy and (most importantly) eating light. I was about to mention it if you didn't, because I have a story: Deep Stone Day One was going great for myself and my team - I bought a bunch of healthy food, stress ate A LOT of it, and subsequently found out (on that day) that I have a gluten sensitivity after eating a pasta dish I had pre-prepped. There was one point after we cleared Atraks (roughly 10 hours in) that I got EXTREMELY sick. Like, shaking, cold shivers, and cant keep food down sick. Thought it would have passed, but after going through the 3rd encounter with a bucket in my lap throwing up, I had to bow out and my team picked up a sub for boss encounter, as if I kept going, I would have certainly put myself in the hospital. Know yourself and your limits, don't overdo it, and for the love of god, remember it's just a video game. It's not worth destroying your body over.
I still remember my number one favorite experience of a day one raid: Atraks. That moment when I figured out we could go to space can never be replicated. (Atraks definitely can though.)
Ironically Atraks gives me and my team vietnam flashbacks lmao we'd thought that the dps window was so much shorter than it actually was and kept trying to big dick dps it when all we needed to do was take a couple seconds to get all set up. It was hell.
My Day 1 DSC failed because people were worrying too much about DPS at Taniks. They blamed our wipes on ammo, but it was really not being able to live until we could use that ammo.
Awesome video thanks! After finding success in day 1 on last 2 raids, I like to add that choosing 5 guardians w same goals and expectations is extremely important. You don’t want to spend 16+ hours of your life where half team is committed The Whole day, and the other half quits in 4-5 hours . choose a team that is entirely on same page on expectations, and sometimes this may not be your best friend. It’s like choosing a roommate, who can you stand in same raid for 16+ hours without going insane.
Something that’s normally useful for day one is if you’re in a darkness zone, try wiping. The wipe screen typically has info about what you need to do for that encounter.
This is all really good advice, to add to the thing about Blueberry thinking and Bungie never putting in an intentional Death or suicide mechanic: It's worth considering Bungie's core gameplay principles when considering mechanics. Bungie will never require things that need specific compositions of teams. While certain loadouts and weapons might make encounters easier, it is highly unlikely that there will be a mechanic that requires specific elements, weapon archetypes or subclasses.
true unless your talking about well. i can by now absolutely see it happen that well is required for some damagephases because you simply dont live aside from that, especially on day one
Thank you! There was a lot of great information in this video! As an experienced day 1 raider, I also learned something new. Advice from my side: 1) drink a lot of water, don't do coffee / tea / energy drinks. I always keep full water bottle nearby for day 1. 2) you need to have trust in the competence of fellow teammates. even a single person doing consistently bad will ruin chances of the whole fireteam to succeed. Play beforehand with the people you are going into day 1, do master vog or gms or master dungeon and assess everyone's skill level and personality (absence of toxicity) 3) doubling down on "dont worry about dps" advice. focus on as much survivability and add clear as you can (mods like: resist mods, protective light, stasis dmg reduction shard, recuperation, well of life and weapons like: witherhoard, telesto, agers scepter, gjallahorn) Day 1 is the reason I play this game even when it is boring. It is very fun and worth it!
Thank you so much for making this guide and telling people they need to come prepared! On vog day one I had a guy who was running jade rabbit and was 1311.
my team's biggest problems for new VOG was timezones and decision making. we're an Australian based clan, so the raid dropped at 3am. most of my team decided to stay up for it. We didn't even make it in the door before we agreed that we fucked up, we need sleep, so we took a 5 hour break for a nap. Got back in and got it almost first try. We will definitely learn from our mistakes for Witch Queen raid, and any future raid.
Some late advice that I just thought of: More often than not, mechanics that you learn in the first few sections of the raid will most likely remain constant throughout all raid encounters, likely culminating with ALL mechanics being put together during the final boss encounter. Examples are: VoG (Oracles & Aegis), Crota's End (Sword), WotM (Cannons & SIVA Balls), Eater of Worlds (Vex Heads), Spire of Stars (Greed Ball & arming weapons), Last Wish (Eye of Riven), SotP (Berzerkers, Batteries, and Phase Radiance), CoS (Witch's Blessing/Curse & Void Crystals), GoS (Tether, Voltaic Overflow, and Motes), and DSC (Augments & Bombs) Another thing, assuming the raid has a relic, test EVERY button input on the relic before looking to actually use it (if that makes sense). See what each button does, and see what those button inputs do against certain targets
Also it just straight up makes no sense with the token system. It wouldn't make sense for you to just wipe if you revive people too many times, especially if you don't 1 or 2 phase the thing. The mechanics of the game tell you immediately that dying will never be a mechanic required to progress.
Exactly, even without the flawless raid requirement, it would just be bad game design to force players to have to die. They could do something like a false death where a player enters a new realm on hitting 0 health, but a straight up death requirement would not be fun to play.
Loved this guide! I wanted to add a few other thoughts when it came to weapons. Sleeper rolls are always worth farming for before a new season. It's good to observe speculation for upcoming buffs or seasonal artefact mods that augment weapon types as well as trying out anything that's changed in the sandbox. Look for weapons with the most powerful perk combos with things like vorpal weapon, firing line with loader perks /good ammo uptime and economy. Also seek out good add crunch weapons, SMGs and strong hand cannons can really help with the combat difficulty especially against tanker enemies. Ramp up damage perks are a little less useful so things like surrounded and frenzy are really good for high level content. Blinding grenade launchers are also absolutely king for this.
1- The earlier you can cobble together a team, the better. It helps tremendously with building synergy and getting to know the people you're spending 24 hours with. 2- People you can get along with are going to be better than people who are really good at the game. If you're going to be spending so much time in one activity under the stresses of contest mode and the raid race, you may as well go into it with people you won't end up hating afterwards. 3- Destiny is an FPS, not an MMO, there most likely will not be super complex mechanics to figure out. If something seems simpler than you think it is, it probably is. 4- The main goal of each encounter is to *survive*. Doing damage can only take you so far if you waste all your rezz tokens and then can't avoid a wipe because of it. 5- BE FLEXIBLE. Yes, you are mostly likely not going to be asked to switch weapons, gear, or classes, but if it's really seeming like your team would benefit from something other than what you are currently using, don't be hard stuck and refuse to change things around. 6- Go!! In!! Prepared!! When preparing ahead of time for Day 1, you should be thinking of every reasonable possibility in terms of class setup, ability use, armor mods, etc. While leveling, keep at least 2 pieces of infusion fuel per slot, if possible, just in case you need to bring something up to power (see #3). have an idea of what you'll want to use based on enemy factions, shield types, champion mods, and whether it's a close or long-range encounter.
Another thing that I find useful for any day one or stressful runs, is to turn down the game audio or music specifically if it's taking up too much noise over comms. It's a small change that can go a long way and reduce tensions in the run.
From past experience with my group that has caused issues is we’ve tried to be almost too clever at times, making parts harder for ourselves, over complicating mechanics or trying to be too exact. I remember during gauntlet leviathan we thought you had to shoot the arrows at the same time, wasted like 2/3 hours trying to get the timing down. Only to hear you could just shoot as many times as you like. my one biggest advice is, keep it simple. Because it’s probably easier than what it might seem
Datto, you're one of the best Destiny youtubers, you truly help people understand the game, and you're not chasing clout and it shows in your content. Top notch dude!
"Keep doing attempts" The person who takes charge on our raid team: Has a 30 minute discussion after every wipe to explain what we just talked about....
The 'be accountable for your actions' is to me the most important one. So many of my teams in the past would not own up to their mistakes and it always ruined the raid for everyone else.
It sucks because with my position in life right now with school and work and not really having enough friends who are dedicated to try and run the Day 1 race it becomes discouraging to think i'll never get to experience something as cool as this ever - but that won't stop me from trying to support others. I'll be in your stream March 5th Datto, cheering you guys on. And to everyone else attempting world's first - good luck, have fun and kick some ass!
I think my number one piece of advice for ALL endgame content is learn how to MITIGATE INCOMING DAMAGE. Your health bar won't miss you when you eat a sniper bullet a mile from cover! This comes to mind because the number of times on Atraks Day 1 people were too scared to get close to the boss for damage was astounding to me, often getting to it far too late, despite copious amounts of geometry and ways to not get hit by the shock bolts. People standing out in the open during VoG Confluxes instead of using the stairs or pillars to headglitch. Standing right in front of enemy spawns in Taniks. Not playing around the pillars and boxes in Gahlran. Even in GMs, standing out in the open, getting hit by 3 snipers that we know have been there since forever, and still blaming the game. Max Recovery keeps your uptime and peeking ability to it's max. Play all sorts of cover, use cover to restore healing and blocking abilities. Crown of Sorrow is such a hectic fight since there is virtually no cover in the boss room as you can get shot in the back by the other two sides, but the deal is, there is actually plenty of cover *if everyone is pulling their weight for killing ads*, as the spikes and different obstacles offer enough line of sight breakage to reduce some unnecessary damage. Try to look for any way to cut significant lines of sight from the enemies, and their spawn points. Use weapons like Witherhoard to spawn trap loads of trash mobs without even having to look at them. Also consider your sandbox available, what abilities your team has access to that you might not be utilizing enough. Heavy lanes that have no cover? You might want some resilience titans with a shit ton of barricades. Think you're going to take on any sort of wave of trash mobs? Heal rift. Heal rift. Heal rift. If you're on Well of Radiance Warlock, place constant rifts for the team, you should have them on cooldown as long as someone is standing inside of them. Middle Tree Sentinel has great ad clear passives AND great team defense, blocking any sort of big damage from mini-boss type enemies if needed. If a super prevents you from dying, use it. Better to have wasted than to have never used and died. Yes, sometimes the game is dumb, and you can't forsee the future of getting 1 shot. HOWEVER, you more likely than not will NOT be getting 1 shot in day 1 raids, you will be dying quickly, but not instantly, which means there is room to peek shoot, and use cover, without fear of dying as long as you can dip into cover and utilize abilities like heal grenades and rifts. Hope this helps someone approach the game differently than it usually plays like for 97% of content. Don't hold W key, just think about your environment a bit more critically, look for spots without enemy line of sight, play your abilities, peek shoot, and focus on creating space and breathing room for you and your teammates.
Thank you so much for this advice. My first day 1 raid was DSC, and our whole team fell prey to a lot of the stuff mentioned here, myself definitely included. Obviously Atraks was a big wild card, but now that we’ve gotten through it, I really valued the experience, even if in the moment it felt like I wasted 11 hours. Definitely gonna keep this stuff in mind when the Witch Queen raid drops.
I love the day 1 dungeon experience as a more casual player. It feels like I’m figuring out raids without quite as much of the commitment, especially because I go in solo
Thanks Datto, gonna share this with my day 1 team, we've had 2 day 1 attempts (DSC and VoG) but always get to the final boss and then can't beat it fully. Hope this year we make it to the end!
I really want to do a day one raid but the two times I tried I ended up with not nice teammates who would say not nice things. Here's hoping for the new raid I can get with a cool team with cool people and do cool stuff.
Crossplay makes friends more accessible than ever before-dip your toe in endgame content and ask to play some more. I made a lot of my friends that I stuck with for years through a single LFG post
Have fun is the best tip in the vid tbh. It’s alright to be frustrated but getting into full on arguments over something that’s supposed to be a challenge and not a cake walk, like the normal mode in raids. It’s gonna be hard but getting through it all is so satisfying
I loved what you mentioned on getting to DPS phase for bosses. So many people were worried about what DPS weapons and what they were going to run (mine included) during Planets in RoN that we couldn't even make it to boss damage because of raid mechanics and lack of add clear. As Datto mentioned many times in cleaning people's vaults, "It doesn't matter how good a weapon or item is if it's not being used." We finally ended up settling for thunderlord which worked perfectly because there was a lot of adds and threats to clear while during the encounter leading to boss damage which Thunderlord was good at. Best of all it was still ABLE to put out enough dps to kill the boss. Yes thunderlord isn't optimal but the most important thing is that IT GOT THE JOB DONE (and thankful was easy to use) which is all that matters. My other tip would probably be that even if you are running optimal dps with like izi rockets or whatever. Don't be afraid to use that heavy to kill the important encounter targets. Yes it sucks that now you'll have 1 or 2 less rockets to shoot at the boss but its better to get to dps rather then not getting to it at all. That and there is a good chance a heavy brick will end up spawning for you anyways.
Tremendous video Datto, thank you so much for this. Especially the part about not having many of these opportunities left. For a game that I claim changed my life I sure make a lot of excuses to NOT enjoy the best it has to offer some times. Good luck out there guardians.
I agree with the “keep trying stuff” point so much. Long breaks to discuss after each wipe is so boring and frustrating. I’m also glad you mentioned the physical/health side of raiding. Get some sleep the night before!
Thanks to everyone offering help to those looking to learn more and get ready for Witch Queen. I'm grateful for all the helpful information. You're doing great, and good luck out there guardians! 😎😎😎
What datto starts saying at 13:30 I believe is the most important, specifically being patient and calm and not getting angry at team mates. I remember I was doing last wish for the first time with a team consisting of all my friends irl and we had troubles at both morgeth, and the vault. At morgeth we just had trouble knowing who had how many stacks of the taken strength and people kept dying, or we couldnt stun morgeth when his timer ran down. And at vault we were on the last round on the last key and my friend didnt know that the white light above the platform meant that, that platform needed a key, so my whole team was pm wiped and my friend didnt know where to go and i kept saying “the last one available!” And he was saying “i dont know where that is!!”. After both morgeth and vault team mates exchanged unsavory words and we took breaks both times. But when we came back we apologized and kept going.
i love the take on figuring out mechanics, i usually had/seen people that dont want to try/explore/confirm something and then you just die over and over with learning essentially 0 info
Thank you for this! I’ve been playing for a few years and I have never done a raid, so I obviously haven’t participated in a day 1 raid, but watching this really made me want to try it out!
This is just an educated guess but if the last 2 raids have taught us anything is that the raid is expected to launch the 2nd weekend of the expansion being out: March 5th 2022. Don’t jump the gun but it’s likely that Saturday. 95% sure.
1 thing my team does is have assigned jobs we stick with. Even as encounters change we stick to specific 'roles' as a team. One person just hard focuses ad clear to keep us safe, another takes charge of rotating and exploring to try and find things we might have missed in the rooms. Normally my job is to take any relics or buffs and figure out what to actually do with them, as well as creating our system for callouts. Find someone who is good as specific things and let them continuously work towards and practice those things. You will find people getting good at things you suck at, and you getting good at things they suck at to balance each other out.
This is advice i have from raiding in other games I would add: 1. If you can have a recording running (OBS Shadowplay whatever else there is). Sometimes you will get a good angle of what happened that no one else might've seen and it is easier to discuss if everyone has all the info available there is. This also goes for screenshots. You could get a debuff so you see the name/timer, see anything that is hard to explain in once sententence, the scoreboard so you dont forget whats on there. Anything visual to an explaination adds certainty and easier understanding instead of having every player go through it and see themselves. 2. In addition to strategies. Everyone can come up with ideas but it can be hard to settle on one. Designate a person before the raid who will (if needed) decide what to do so you dont spend time arguing about strategy to keep pulls going. 3. Greed responsibly. Finding uptime early is good if you can figure it out without dying because then you dont have to figure it out at the very end and change drastically how you play. (might not apply as good to destiny as it does in mmos) 4. Before the raid try to do the contest mode with the people you plan on raiding. Building that team synergy will reduce time spent talking because you already know how to convey information to your team so its understood quickly. 5. (This is very far fetched and not necessary even if you compete for a top ranking) If you can have a 7th person out of raid to be with you in the call and look over your players. A person out of raid has a lot more time and can focus better on coming up with strategies because they are not busy playing the game.
Accepting flaws to strategize I strongly agree with. I stayed away from plates and switched to runner in leviathan. I avoided tether vs Sanctified Mind to make it easier for those getting it done without confusion. It’s so much easier to do that rather than struggle and go nowhere. Very very excited for the witch queen raid day!
Awesome video Datto. Great tips. One that I would like to call out that my team has run into is "try to not take things personally". For example, if suggestions are made to alter how an encounter is going, especially if it is Person/Team A (which is you) try to hear it as a strategy adjustment and not "you screwed up". Feedback should be constructive between teammates and you should take extra care in your tone when you suggest things. Day 1 is not the day to "give each other crap" because tensions are most likely running high, as Datto mentions.
Lesson learned from Deep Stone Crypt (my first day one): bring Outbreak up to contest power. If all else fails, as a starting point, use Outbreak for DPS and use your special and heavy for everything else. We didn’t get the clear because we couldn’t figure out what weapons to use. If I’d thought of Outbreak, it was a safe 3 phase, we could have used swords and GLs for everything else and probably would’ve gotten it. It’s an incredibly powerful weapon for underleveled 6 man content. And now it has infinite ammo. *GET THAT CATALYST DONE BEFORE THE DAY ONE RAID*
@@setsunachiame the catalysts for outbreak and whisper should be coming back with witch queen!! per bungie, i’m pretty sure. somebody correct me if i’m wrong but i’m 99% sure
@@Robaldeenyo Outbreak Perfected is an exotic pulse rifle that, when landing rapid hits & precision kills, spawns nanites to attack the enemy you shot. It was good back during Joker’s Wild, but has since been overshadowed by other weapons. It’s still good on it’s own though; I’d say even better from the infinite primary ammo change. The catalyst gives it the ability to spawn nanites from dead enemies, and have more in general. _Intrinsic Perk - Parasitism: This weapon does more damage to enemies based on the number of SIVA nanites that attach to them._ _Catalyst - Disease Vector: Increases nanite damage. Enemies that die with nanites attached to them generate additional nanites._
My Day 1 advice has always been: go in with people you know and trust. My friends and I know each others skills, experience playing, and our personalities. We can all take accountability, and call out each other without causing fights. The Atraks encounter was frustrating for us, but we kept going at it by laughing at mistakes and politely having a go at each other over near-deaths and actual deaths.
Yep, that's the sad part for solo players or players like me that only have 2 to 3 more friends to play with, we have to relay on lfg for 2 or 3 more for raids
This video is awesome. I just wish the destiny community would understand and have fun doing day1 etc. Every team I've had fall apart instead of sticking by it and then having to look for a new team and start all over again.
As a general tip, survivability is huge. You need a chest piece of every element available. Find what causes you the most deaths and slot two different mods for it. Vandal snipers one shooting you? Arc and sniper resist. Boss uses void cannons? Void and concussive. This gives you about 40% resistance. In other words, you take only 60% damage. In some instances, this turns a 1 shot into a 2 shot. Which is enough time to hide and heal. Also don't underestimate protective light. It stacks multiplicatively and if it procs during a damage phase with a well, you are almost impossible to kill.
A couple things to add: 1) Too many cooks in the kitchen. Six people can be a lot to try and collaborate on a single cohesive game plan and sometimes you'll have 6 different ideas of how to proceed. Don't add to the noise unless you had something meaningful to contribute to the conversation. It feels awkward sometimes to not have anything to add while the rest of your team figures out all the mechanics (this happened to me during DSC first encounter; I never touched the buffs so I was in the dark for most of the fight), sometimes the best you can do is shut up and keep an eye out (and when we finally cleared that encounter, I was the one who noticed the fuses in the basement and had the idea to swap scanner downstairs). 2) Take breaks. Fatigue is the enemy. A 15 minute break can pay absolutely insane dividends just by resetting everyone's brains. Take those breaks away from the computer. Take lunch and dinner seriously. This isn't even my advice, it comes from the raid leader of one of the top WoW raiding guilds in the world. He constantly mentions regular 15-minute breaks, dedicated breakfast/lunch/dinner hours, and a strict sleep schedule as critical components to their success.
a little piece of advice for a more casual team: don’t be afraid to stop if you’re getting too heated. it could be for the day or for an hour, but if your for fun group boils over into a screaming match, it’s probably best for everyone that you break for awhile
One advice I will add is to pay attention for the messages that pop on ur left side of the screen it can tell u a lot about what u should do like in the first encounter of vog is says that a vex is taking control of a plate that means that u should not let a vex on the plate etc
these tips helped honestly im newer to destiny and raiding is my favorite thing to do. so taking accountability for a wipe is important and testing out new things to learn mechanics is also good thanks so much for this (:
I'm gonna give this raid a go on day like I did vault of glass. For vog remastered day 1 I got to atheon but we all got caught up on call outs for oracles. We unfortunately didn't complete it but we got to the final boss on day 1 and imo that's an accomplishment. Time for another crack at it and good luck datto and mathclass
Thanks so much for this Daddo. Tried my first day 1 raid with reprised VOG but got stuck at Atheon. Can't wait to finally complete Day 1 in Witch Queen thanks to all your tips and advice here! Best of luck in the Raid Race!
Thanks for the tips, funnily enough my first Day 1 raid experience was doing an LFG day 1 raid run back when VoG relaunched back in May. Shit was beyond complicated but fun as hell. Stayed up til late later into the night trying to kill Atheon but the damage wasn’t good enough and we kept wiping. Never got the raid clear or the 24 hour emblem but I did manage to get a taste of what raids were like.
14:00 his advice on owning up to your own mistakes is fantastic. I know during day one VOG in d2 I kept randomly shooting oracles with xeno and forcing my team to wipe like a moron. took us like an hour to work out that there was an order to it, and many apologies from myself
Really good thing I can recommend is doing some meal prep beforehand. If you want to go hard on it, you can prep up some easy meals to microwave for every day up to the raid to take cooking out the equation. But really you can just do some easy meals for raid day. I did that for DSC and it was great.
The last tip "have fun" is the best advise. My groups first day 1 attempt was d2 vog and we thought it would be a cake walk cause we did it in d1. How wrong we were. We never even finished our first run within 24 hours. Yeah we didn't finish it, and atheon was getting frustrating by the 4th hour of our attempts on him after I think 9 total hours in the raid, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Me and my friends had some of the most fun and best times we've ever had playing video games during those long hours. If you take the raid too seriously, you lose that fun. Set your goal, take it seriously enough that you stay engaged and work towards that goal, but don't take it seriously that you lose the joy that the whole gsme was created for. A raid that you don't finish but had a blast in will be a way better experience than a raid you do finish but weas too serious to actually enjoy with friends
really appreciate all the info here. will be going into my first every day 1 with my team, and i've never been more nervous lol good luck to everyone making some last minute preparations for later today, hope everyone gets their day 1 clears
@@noahhkun5097 well, while we didnt get the day 1 clear, we did get the contest clear. and to me, its just as good. lot of the info in this vid is actually very relevant. thanks for checking in :)
Some personal advice. If you are serious about clearing the raid day one, find and assemble a team way before it launches. When I was looking for a team I decided that I want to find people that have the same experiences I have, such as having flawless raids completed, week one clears at the least etc. Once you find your pals, get together on a Saturday to practice in some of the other raids and get to know each other and your play styles. Most importantly, as Datto said, have fun with it. Don’t get mad. Getting angry and yelling at everyone is just setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. Because of these things I now have a permanent raid team that gets together once a new one launches, and 2 day one clears. Good luck all.
Ya after 10+ hours those people that where’s chill in the beginning, start becoming impatient and angry and leave from fatigue, trust me I literally get teams months in advance Only to find out after 10+ hours they become a different person and start yelling at people and rage quit, and a huge thing is TIME ZONE don’t play with Someone in a different TIME ZONE
This is the problem I'm having now. Struggling to find teammates that are knowledgeable of the game but not absolute aholes. Really don't want to be in lfg on day 1 again Edit: any advice in where to find teammates?
Other advice: Do your best to complete, but don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t. Especially if things outside of your control occur. Maybe yours or your teammate’s power goes out. Maybe there’s a medical emergency. Maybe someone need to go take an exam or pick their kids up from school. Life happens. If you can move things around to clear things up as best as you can, great! But don’t think it’s the end of the world if something comes up. Additionally, if you are forming a team, be considerate of those other players. Show up on time. Be mentally present. Be positive, but honest. Don’t cut a player off your squad because your mate just woke up four hours late to the raid and they decided they “really want to get in on this clear.” If you’re going to cut someone, do it early enough that they’ll be able to find another team (exigent circumstances not included). Most importantly, like Datto said, have fun. You and your team are all here to work together and to enjoy the game and the time you have. If you’ve agreed to take it seriously, do so with levity. Good luck out there, Guardians!
another piece of advice id love to share is to use resist mods on your chest piece + take advantage of charged with light mods/elemental well mods + bring a variety of different elemental armor pieces to build some element well/cwl builds that are going to help you stay alive, not do more damage. Protective Light is ALWAYS going to be your best friend compared to high energy fire/Lucent blade/etc. Since you are always capped on your light level in the first 24 hours of a raid, everything is going to do more damage to you while damage mods are only going to help you kill an ad with maybe 2 less hand cannon shots. If you find yourself dying to lets say vex sniper hobgoblins, sniper resist mods and solar resist mods will help you tank an extra 1 or 2 shots before you die so that you can reposition yourself to heal to find out how to take out that sniper, or get out of its line of sight. In short, value your life rather than your damage.
I would love to translate this so that more people would be able to understand it, I agreed with every aspect you mentioned, and I could clearly see myself during my Day 1 DSC clear.
Pressure to compete ? You kids are so coddled its mind boggling .. no wonder the world sucks. You're afraid of the slightest bit of discomfort. Wake up there's zero pressure it's a video game
Funny enough, something I used was Mark Rober's video on solving escape rooms. It has great points of how to organize, how to collect data, and how to puzzle solve, which obviously is a lot of what blind raiding consists of.
17:11 This is the best advice, especially when it comes to destiny. Sometimes the game just won't work the way it's supposed to, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. There's always a way to prevent or get around some nonsense that may happen. Like in the Hollowed Lair GM, an unstop sometimes teleports up past the little walkway in the beginning. Shouldn't happen, but it does. You can prevent it by moving up quick or stay back and wait for the teleport. Either way, there is a solution to get past it.
in 'get past', 'get' is the verb and 'past' is the adverb (eg. 'I'd like to get past', 'he got past me') (and the adverb is still actually derived from the past tense of 'pass')
Honestly that was a very good video ! I only did 2 day ones (cleared both), and yeah, I agree completely with everything you said, especially to not be stubborn with a strategy, been guilty of that. Kinda wish my team communicated better tho. It's often hard to get my observations across to the rest of the team cause they're all talking over another. A friend was actually right about the strategy once but wasn't heard for like half an hour cause the rest were too busy yelling they didn't hear him. Don't really know what to do about it
I got one. Most encounters in a raid teach a new mechanic. Usually you will need to use this new knowledge in some form, during whatever encounter comes next. In short, they will teach you, what you need to know, as you need to know it. So it has been written!
My only real advice isn’t gameplay related. First, make sure your team is actually committed (especially if you want the 24 hr emblem). As in willing to call out of work or school to race. Ideally, if you want the 24 hr emblem you should always be the LEAST committed person on your team. One person leaving can be the end of a group that otherwise could’ve finished the raid. If you usually raid with people who tend to ragequit often or quickly, find a different team that suits your drive better. Maybe the race will be over in four-five hours, and maybe it’ll go to two days. Either way, if you’re willing to race 24 hours, make sure EVERYONE is willing to race 24 hours
Doing my first day one for witch queen. We gathered a team from our clan kinda rag tag but we are comfortable with being under power hopefully we can get a 24hr clear.
Coming from a former world progression raider in wow and ffxiv, I 1000% agree with not prioritizing dps in the beginning. You can always optimize damage after you get comfortable with mechanics, but the best optimization is being alive. And drink water, eat light and healthy, and get a good nights sleep before raid.
WQs raid will be my 4th Day 1 (attempt) Garden barely counts because I was still new to raiding, Atraks handed me my own ass on a plate and I didn't have a set team for VoG so I went through teams like butter. I'm looking forward to my first day 1 emblem
The only day 1 experience I've had so far was VoG(d2). I was so nervous going in but that immediately turned to excitement when we got it. There's nothing that comes close to simply beating an encounter on day 1
For some advice to newer day 1 Raiders, I’d say one thing to keep in mind is to not overcomplicate any of the mechanics. Think about every raid (outside of Last Wish)- every mechanic has 1-2 functions, not 3-5. Typically, an encounter will be built around a singular mechanic for the first 1-3 encounters before adding all in for a fight. A Riven is pretty atypical for a day 1 raid-don’t overcomplicate the mechanics, try to keep it simple
great advice here. if you think you're getting too complicated with it, you probably are.
As well a mechanic/non typical damage phase where you will have to shoot rivens scabs to continue/do extra damage to her
I'd argue the Vault encounter shows the overcomplicated mechanics way more than Riven.
Thanks a ton for this. I’ll be attempting my first Day 1 as well and this is very appreciated
I'm rooting for you Bricky! Good luck!
Hey brick
GL brick-man. Enjoy it!
Hey Brick, love your vids! Good luck!
The Witch Queen Day 1 raid is gonna be my first as well dude, IM SO HYPE
For those wondering, if the trend stands like the last two raids we had, the day 1 for witch queen should take place on the second Saturday of the season, or March 5th 2022.
What an epic weekend that would be. Batman then a day one raid…
Makes about sense.
God I hope so. I don’t want to miss a day 1 raid cause of school.
The day after my birthday
I hope so, a raid would be an awesome late birthday present, mine is the day before.
adding onto the 'don't worry about boss dps' advice - because of contest mode, bungie can plan out buffs/player dps/boss hp so that you will almost definitely need 4 dps phases to kill the boss. we've found much more success making sure we can consistently survive 3 dps phases first, before taking ways to optimize for damage (ex. use your heavy weapons to kill minibosses. you can figure out how much you can 'cheat' and save ammo for the boss later down the line. use a riskrunner to stay alive, even if it prevents you from using an exotic heavy, etc.)
this exactly, my crew cleared day 1 atraks because we all started running riskrunner in order to get the arc resistance against all the fallen and the sniper shanks in specific
boss dps is why my team wasnt able to beat atheon
Or crimson, yes it’s not a dps king but staying alive to dump rockets or sniper or whatever is better than dying and not getting to do any dmg
@@seanslaysean7097
Or if you don't wanna burn your exotic slot, use a weapon with Unrelenting.
@@FuckAllRepublicans it took my team hours to beat him because he was a dps check.
I had so much fun with my friends when we were on Atraks for 12 hours...
I have played you in pvp mr gl melee combo with cerb+1 you 5-0 our top 500 team
@@crux_dylan-4210 that’s a first. What’s your bungie tag?
CRUX_Dylan-#8560 I’m not top 500 or any good just had 2 top 500s on my team I also played with you in freelance last week
I’m a pve main tho
7:50 this absolutely happened to us in day 1 DSC. Our way of clearing replication was screwing us up every other run and no one wanted to change it, so I made the call to swap Operators and clear buffs in a different way. We got it the next run. Sometimes people in your group may be struggling with their roles but won’t say anything. You should always be looking out for other people
yeah i was that person in day 1. nobody of my teammates informed me of the replication buff cause i was addclearing downstairs
Yeah you can always run double special in a raid because you can switch to a primary when you run out of ammo.
Rat King DPS coming in
@@dn272 If you can run two special weapons that both have lead from gold, spec scavenger mods for both, and finders for your heavy and special then you almost never run out of ammo
I was about to mention it if you didn't, because I have a story:
Deep Stone Day One was going great for myself and my team - I bought a bunch of healthy food, stress ate A LOT of it, and subsequently found out (on that day) that I have a gluten sensitivity after eating a pasta dish I had pre-prepped.
Dude the bucket shows your dedication :D
I still remember my number one favorite experience of a day one raid: Atraks. That moment when I figured out we could go to space can never be replicated. (Atraks definitely can though.)
Ironically Atraks gives me and my team vietnam flashbacks lmao we'd thought that the dps window was so much shorter than it actually was and kept trying to big dick dps it when all we needed to do was take a couple seconds to get all set up. It was hell.
10:11
I also loved Gologoroth in D1 for a similar reason. If the team wiped to unstable light and only one guy is alive, you know who is to blame.
@@1votdopeningfan138 there are still certain cases like atraks where there's no point though, rare but it does happen
@@dankerbell "some damage phases". This is Mainly to emphasize that attempting day 1 without a well would be really Really dumb
Thank you! There was a lot of great information in this video! As an experienced day 1 raider, I also learned something new.
Advice from my side:
1) drink a lot of water, don't do coffee / tea / energy drinks. I always keep full water bottle nearby for day 1.
2) you need to have trust in the competence of fellow teammates. even a single person doing consistently bad will ruin chances of the whole fireteam to succeed. Play beforehand with the people you are going into day 1, do master vog or gms or master dungeon and assess everyone's skill level and personality (absence of toxicity)
3) doubling down on "dont worry about dps" advice. focus on as much survivability and add clear as you can (mods like: resist mods, protective light, stasis dmg reduction shard, recuperation, well of life and weapons like: witherhoard, telesto, agers scepter, gjallahorn)
Day 1 is the reason I play this game even when it is boring. It is very fun and worth it!
Thank you so much for making this guide and telling people they need to come prepared! On vog day one I had a guy who was running jade rabbit and was 1311.
No way 😭
Ew😂
Oh jesus
my team's biggest problems for new VOG was timezones and decision making. we're an Australian based clan, so the raid dropped at 3am. most of my team decided to stay up for it. We didn't even make it in the door before we agreed that we fucked up, we need sleep, so we took a 5 hour break for a nap. Got back in and got it almost first try. We will definitely learn from our mistakes for Witch Queen raid, and any future raid.
Thanks Datto. The Witch Queen will be my first ever Day 1 raid experience(hopefully a clear), with my new clan. This video really helped me.
Some late advice that I just thought of:
More often than not, mechanics that you learn in the first few sections of the raid will most likely remain constant throughout all raid encounters, likely culminating with ALL mechanics being put together during the final boss encounter.
Examples are:
VoG (Oracles & Aegis), Crota's End (Sword), WotM (Cannons & SIVA Balls), Eater of Worlds (Vex Heads), Spire of Stars (Greed Ball & arming weapons), Last Wish (Eye of Riven), SotP (Berzerkers, Batteries, and Phase Radiance), CoS (Witch's Blessing/Curse & Void Crystals), GoS (Tether, Voltaic Overflow, and Motes), and DSC (Augments & Bombs)
Another thing, assuming the raid has a relic, test EVERY button input on the relic before looking to actually use it (if that makes sense). See what each button does, and see what those button inputs do against certain targets
You're right about Bungie not putting in a mechanic that forces you to die, because then a flawless raid would be impossible.
the fact that people think you need to die to a mechanic when we've had flawless raid triumphs for a while just really confuses me.
Also it just straight up makes no sense with the token system. It wouldn't make sense for you to just wipe if you revive people too many times, especially if you don't 1 or 2 phase the thing. The mechanics of the game tell you immediately that dying will never be a mechanic required to progress.
Closest thing my clan has ever done for "dying mechanics" is seeing what kills us and how to prevent it lolol
Something important is to have a team that won’t kick you before they finish an encounter
3:31 This is also solid advice when taking your car in to get serviced.
The way Datto comes in with "in the days" right at the beginning, it sounds like he's about to belt out a sick anthem.
"Keep doing attempts"
The person who takes charge on our raid team: Has a 30 minute discussion after every wipe to explain what we just talked about....
Datto excitedly shaking the paper after vault is the image that is most synonymous thing for me during that raid i remember it so vividly lmao
Wanna play Julie? I haven’t accomplished a day one raid before, but I for sure can be a kind friend to you.
Agree find a clan who supports each other and see if you can get an organised clan with discord. Hope you find a team :)
Crossplay makes friends more accessible than ever before-dip your toe in endgame content and ask to play some more. I made a lot of my friends that I stuck with for years through a single LFG post
try to find a clan that's nice, trust me it is SO worth it
D2Sanctuary should have teams up, and they have rules that should help with finding a good team.
Currently blind progging the new FFXIV raid tier on week 1 and this advice surprisingly helps a lot, even if it's a completely different game!
Tremendous video Datto, thank you so much for this. Especially the part about not having many of these opportunities left. For a game that I claim changed my life I sure make a lot of excuses to NOT enjoy the best it has to offer some times. Good luck out there guardians.
I have no desire to ever attempt a day one clear, but watching everyone compete is one of my favorite things in Destiny.
I'm really hoping they tell us when the raid is coming out soon. They make my work schedule in about a week and I want to request that weekend off.
This is just an educated guess but if the last 2 raids have taught us anything is that the raid is expected to launch the 2nd weekend of the expansion being out: March 5th 2022. Don’t jump the gun but it’s likely that Saturday. 95% sure.
@@max-a-million9428 I hope so! I'm gonna request that weekend off either way lol
This is advice i have from raiding in other games I would add:
(might not apply as good to destiny as it does in mmos)
Now if only outbreaks catalyst could be acquired again. WHEN Bungie?!
@@setsunachiame the catalysts for outbreak and whisper should be coming back with witch queen!! per bungie, i’m pretty sure. somebody correct me if i’m wrong but i’m 99% sure
@@setsunachiame it’ll be a playlist thing once WQ drops. I assume it’ll also become kill progressed too.
So I've never even heard of this gun until now.. what makes it so good? And is it still good without catalyst?
@@Robaldeenyo Outbreak Perfected is an exotic pulse rifle that, when landing rapid hits & precision kills, spawns nanites to attack the enemy you shot.
It was good back during Joker’s Wild, but has since been overshadowed by other weapons. It’s still good on it’s own though; I’d say even better from the infinite primary ammo change.
The catalyst gives it the ability to spawn nanites from dead enemies, and have more in general.
_Intrinsic Perk - Parasitism: This weapon does more damage to enemies based on the number of SIVA nanites that attach to them._
_Catalyst - Disease Vector: Increases nanite damage.
A couple things to add:
1) Too many cooks in the kitchen.
Bro, I'm so hyped to hear the raid guide music again 👌
One advice I will add is to pay attention for the messages that pop on ur left side of the screen it can tell u a lot about what u should do like in the first encounter of vog is says that a vex is taking control of a plate that means that u should not let a vex on the plate etc
Im honestly just here to hear Datto speak. Good words!
Seeing the leviathan footage with a shotgun as the power weapon takes me back lol
these tips helped honestly im newer to destiny and raiding is my favorite thing to do. so taking accountability for a wipe is important and testing out new things to learn mechanics is also good thanks so much for this (:
I'm gonna give this raid a go on day like I did vault of glass. For vog remastered day 1 I got to atheon but we all got caught up on call outs for oracles. We unfortunately didn't complete it but we got to the final boss on day 1 and imo that's an accomplishment. Time for another crack at it and good luck datto and mathclass
Exciting to see raid racing after a long time.
Thanks so much for this Daddo. Tried my first day 1 raid with reprised VOG but got stuck at Atheon. Can't wait to finally complete Day 1 in Witch Queen thanks to all your tips and advice here! Best of luck in the Raid Race!
Ah, my favorite part of this video is the part where you talk about the thing, Where the stuff does the things; it was quite invigorating
Last 4 mins are just straight life advice. Good work datto
Seeing those old raid clips from last wish and crown was jaw dropping that max light was in the triple digits. Can’t believe I forgot about that
14:00 his advice on owning up to your own mistakes is fantastic. I know during day one VOG in d2 I kept randomly shooting oracles with xeno and forcing my team to wipe like a moron. took us like an hour to work out that there was an order to it, and many apologies from myself
"Have water on standby" I had a whole Brita filter on my table next to me while doing day one DSC, was very helpful to take a drink after every wipe
Really good thing I can recommend is doing some meal prep beforehand. If you want to go hard on it, you can prep up some easy meals to microwave for every day up to the raid to take cooking out the equation. But really you can just do some easy meals for raid day. I did that for DSC and it was great.
Thank you Datto so much for this, our team(s) will be using your advice and tactics, see you on raid day one Guardian!!
A raid that you don't finish but had a blast in will be a way better experience than a raid you do finish but weas too serious to actually enjoy with friends
really appreciate all the info here. will be going into my first every day 1 with my team, and i've never been more nervous lol
good luck to everyone making some last minute preparations for later today, hope everyone gets their day 1 clears
How’d it go?
Hammer 89 sorry to hear that man. At least they tried for 10 hours most teams don’t even last an hour.
This is the problem I'm having now. Struggling to find teammates that are knowledgeable of the game but not absolute aholes. Really don't want to be in lfg on day 1 again
Edit: any advice in where to find teammates?
@@danielpatel316 there are a lot of discords that have people that would probably let you join their clan
This is now in my top 5 datto vids! Really great vid Datto!
Datto talking all scientific about controlling variables makes me feel a certain type of way ;)
These are all great tips my team and I have worked on over the completions of day 1 raid and it makes huge differences
So pumped. Just so pumped for the next raid day.
I don't even intend to do day 1 raiding because of the pressure to complete but I love watching and learning about how others figured it out
Pressure to compete ?
*past
in 'get past', 'get' is the verb and 'past' is the adverb (eg. 'I'd like to get past', 'he got past me') (and the adverb is still actually derived from the past tense of 'pass')
@@jacob-2271 I actually had it that way the first time and for whatever reason changed it. Thank you.
One of the best days of the year! Appreciate the video. Gets me even more hype for it!
The content has been on fire lately.
This is why we love and Stan Datto always good information my fav Destiny content creator
The only day 1 experience I've had so far was VoG(d2). I was so nervous going in but that immediately turned to excitement when we got it. There's nothing that comes close to simply beating an encounter on day 1
