I've never know anyone who made money from a Sari Sari store. The reasons are many but usually due to unpaid credit, freeloaders and so-called friends, and pilferage. Your wife just wants to feel useful which is almost impossible where you are located. Try a taxi business or car rental. I've had both and did well. You know the old saying, " How do you make a million in the Philippines? Start with 2 million because you will always lose your 1st million." And NEVER hire family or friends!!!!

My own take on sari-sari stores is that they are not a profitable business. They are more of a community service shop for the convenience of the neighborhood when you don't want to make the long trip to the market or the mall or wherever. My wife used our stores in AC (ones at the front of our house) mostly as something to do and to make pocket change. Our decision was that there's not enough interest there to maintain for long.

I tried a sari sari store with this cute bar girl to help her out when her days get numbered. But she said it’s hard bec the customers are neighbors and she gets drowned in IOUs. I asked her then why take IOUs? She just give a cant be helped look. The answer is most probably the place is a slum and anyone who buys anything in that area don’t have any money either. We tried pedicabs too. Won’t make a lot but doesn’t cost a lot. Even that fell through because the railroad rezoned the area and people needed to be relocated. I got frustrated. Expectations collide with reality. I think some people are unlucky. Some people find a way. And sometimes, cut your losses and let it go before it drags you down. Live and learn. That was more than 10 years ago. My guess is she is probably chunky now and took the easy way out and bagged a hard working guy who accepts her lovingly or maybe she has a string of kids with different fathers like her sis. The best business is rentals property. You are better owning a good location and renting it out than trying to run a store trying to make a few cents sale on every item. No spoilage. No theft. No long hours.

@@thebigunitphilippines5862 You don't have to be a genius to think outside the box. But it seems your incapable of that, so I will give you an example. You can open a small gym, rent or buy some equipment. You don't have to sell vegetables. Your typical filipino cannot replicate this. See how easy that was? It took me 30 seconds to think of that.

    • @philipcooper3330
      @philipcooper3330 3 роки тому +3

@@chosen_one1602 sounds good, but he makes a good point. There are plenty thinking outside the box, but once you do the numbers, it all comes back around. The scale here is so small. Sure, the gym thing, great idea. But to make it worth while you need some good equipment and a few machines. That all cost you money off the top. Now your left with theming to earn and recoup your investments. It’s very risky as there no guarantees here. Fitness is a luxury in the US, but not here. Just a thought.

My wife had a very successful store, however, we moved to better living accommodations and tried to run the store from the front of our apartment as you stated at first it was ok. But then the people in the area where moved, and we're only talking about a block, didn't buy from us, they preferred to go to the many other stores that were just around the corner. So we had to close it down, my wife has a store or worked her parents store her whole life. I think is a little sad, however, she has found other things to keep her busy. Thank you for this video, to have a Sari-Sari Store is not easy. As you stated, my wife use to get early in the morning and then close around 11pm. Then the hiccup happened, and here we are, God bless!

With a sari sari store you deal with 1) keeping inventory which ties up your cash, 2) part of your inventory has spoilage issues which wastes cash, 3) petty theft, 4) long hours and lots of sweat capital, 5) giving locals discounts and a credit line, 6) potential robbery, 7) volatile competition, 8) generally low profit margins, 9) at some point when you decide to quit, and you can’t sell the store, your faced with piles of inventory that you may need to sell for pennies on the dollar, 10) you’re at the mercy of a landlord if you don’t own the space. Just a few things I can see as a drawback.
Based on your description, you have a store to keep Lut busy and challenged.. so basically this is a hobby for you guys. As long as you think of it that way then you should know when to get out when the hobby is no longer fun. If you need the money, there are other businesses that may not be as taxing to you physically and emotionally.. if you don’t need the money, then perhaps you can think about volunteering your time to non profit causes?

My wife runs a small sari-sari store in front of our house on Daram Island, Samar. I was/am against it because it takes business from the poor people that also have stores in her village. We don't need the money...it just keeps her busy. But...I never raised an issue about it...was kinda hoping that she would lose interest.

My sister and her husband put up an EGG business and was renting a small commercial space from a guy who happens to be a good friend of theirs. It was doing so well and the profit allowed them to sell some rice, cooking oils and laundry detergents as well. One year later the owner of the place they were renting from informed them that he no longer want them to stay there as he needs to improve all the spaces for rent, so they had no choice but to leave. It was devastating for my sister and her husband because they gained the trust of their costumers and they became known to the area. A month after they left, that guy did not do any renovations or improvements of his commercial spaces, instead he put up his own egg and frozen food business on the very same spot. That’s how Filipinos support each other’s businesses there...

Small startup business don't take out a long term lease because they don't know if the business will survive. If the business does great, the landlord will notice and jack up the rent. This happened to a friend who opened a restaurant here in the USA. The landlord ran him out of business financially. He then opened his own restaurant there under the same name, (name was not copyrighted). Another friend remolded the place he was renting. landlord doubled his rent because he could now rent it out to someone else at a higher rate. The property owner paid nothing in parts or labor for the improvements. The laws in California was a renter can not undo any improvements made to the property. It is considered destruction based on revenge.
Gratitude is the shortest lived of all human emotions. It is soon replaced with greed.

Commercial spaces rental is best business too... if you really got huge money then buy a lot along the road or in the town proper then build commercial spaces. Sure money 💰
Or rental houses... studio type in 6 doors and give it for let’s say 3,500-4,000 x6 doors=21k to 24k monthly clean money 😊.. the more you build the more income. Another suggestion😊
( you got good fellow people you can let them rent to your rental studios when they visit PH ,the figures is my example what I have given above)😊

One thing to add is family members and so called friends. When you open a store they expect you to give them a job, free food the heart break stories will be coming from everywhere.
Glad you mentioned the copycats. If you are making good money. Others will see that and what to cash in on your success.
Often opening a store as close as a doors down selling the same products as your store.

I said the same thing to my wife about "throat cutting neighbor's" copying your business if you're making money. We had a Physical ukay-ukay store in Tanjay, but the location was bad. The town is also flooded now with ukay-ukay store's; therefore competition is selling at rate where no profit is being made just to get a sale. We decided to stick with our online store to avoid overhead cost and close the brick and mortar one. I was just about to open a gym, but then COVID hit! Thank the lord I hadn't purchased the equipment and or leased or built a location already. I have two Pinoy friend's here who had gym's (one had just opened a month prior) and both lost it all due to COVID. Looking at other possible business models in the meantime.

Dont forget to include the sari sari store so that all tenants will just buy it from you. They wont move someone else. Im also renting an apartment and its my ideal that i dont want to walk far away to buy foods, print something, laundry. I want to be very close especially cook foods no need for me to cook. Im so lazy :)

same here, I have filipinos always asking me to invest. I tell them I don't need to invest, besides I am too old for that. I only invest with edward jones and I have an excellent retirement from working in the oil fields in the north slope Alaska. But I do rent out tents, fishing poles, and sea kayaks at our beach cottage. But it's just seasonal, it pays our bills in the PI.

Wonderful vlog! It is tough to operate a small store and then have overhead costs as well to pay. Considering a lot of small stores are closing due to the pandemic, it shows your store is managed well by Lot. 👍

Love you guys! You always state "take care of your pets" I wanted to add something to that from experience. Don't get a pet unless you have at least $500, preferably $2000, available at any point and time to pay for emergency care. The last thing you want to do is fall in love with your pet as if they were part of the family, like most of us do, and then an emergency comes up, and you may have to watch your pet die simply because you can't afford the care. I've had a few instances where this has happened, but was able to scrounge up enough to care for my pet, but just barely. You'll always need that $500 in case of emergency, but regular care can cost a lot as well. At a time when we were barely making ends meet, our 11 yo cat developed diabetes, and it was costing us $120mo for insulin, and needles. He lived to 13, but what a cat! By all means, get a pet, preferably one from the SPCA or other shelter, but be prepared for the emergencies, and future care of that pet.

You know it,s funny, because my partner dreams of a sari sari store.
Years ago she have one in the province, did well with cooked treats. But she wants mini grocery like Lut.
Of course we will do it, she will learn like you guys have, that it's not big income.
She has started vlogging also tho, but only small right now, not much variety because of her situation, but in the future who knows.☺
A nice video Brian it's good you and Lot tell some home truths about running a sari store in the philipines.

Over the past 30 years, I have owned many retail stores, my max having 10 at same time. Imo 90% of employees will steal, makes no difference if they are friends, a relative or strangers. I stopped hiring family and friends early on. Now retired and relocating to PH in about 5 years, I will never consider opening a retail store of any kind...even in the US, they will "copy", no one is the original.
