- Today I have the pleasure to present you the Holy Squared Trinity, or the most famous rectangular watches ever made.
Important watches in the history of watchmaking which started to become more and more popular, increasing in price and attention. ENJOY!

First of all, I must say: "Thank You!" for such a piece of great documentary about these three iconic time-pieces. Everything has been done with great and sophisticated taste wich made me feel so amused, so interested and so priviliged. Honestly. Your videos has a great standard.
The Pieces.
A rectangular case in a wrist-watch is not a random sympthom, it has been search, and desired to be diferenciated, a solution to give a touch of sophistication to any kind of wrist-watch, This formula has been used successfully even with sport-watches, and emphatises even more this touch of elegance and distiction in a dress-watch. The person who has chosen a rectangular watch for his wrist wants to stand out, without sacrifacing elegance and refinement. These designs means itself a continous contrapositions of elements , the spherical coexisting with the straight line, wich envolves the firstone. This, draws attention. It is only my humble point of view.

As for the shape, it's really interesting how people perceive time on a rectangle. It's different and personal. that's the greatest thing about it :)

First the Santos de Cartier sparked my interest. Especially I felt I needed something more "bling" next to all my sport watches.
Almost felt misplaced in the nearby Cartier store.
After trying the the Santos even in the duotone version with yellow gold, the salesperson played a trick on me... and handed me a full rose-gold Santos Dumont.
I found myself pivoting immediately away from what I thought would be the right choice for me. Even a medium sized Tank on leather was all of a sudden attractive.
Pulled the trigger on a less expensive Dumont and only as of recent startef to enjoy it and begin to wear it more and more often. To the point where I feel the watch influences my attitude for the better - even when tucked away under a shirt. It transfered such a lot to me in an unexpected way and keeps on giving.
And only during the days before christmas, I was drawn into the JLC boutique.As soon as I can somehow justify to add or swap another piece in my collection, I will begin to enjoy another rectangle on my wrist.

Dumont has a specific appeal, I find the XL version more attractive than the medium Santos. As for Reverso, I think it works perfectly next to a Dumont :) pretty similar, but so different!

I am a big fan of these types of watches and I have owned a reverso, which was a wonderful timepiece.
I also own a Glashütte Original seventies panorama datum which has a gentle square shaped case which I really like and appreciate. It’s not well known but worthy of attention if you’re interested.

Great vid and three great picks...for me the JLC is the ultimate watch porn in the square? market.Also really appreciate the sartorial elegance on show, which makes a change from back to front baseball caps and T shirts, prevalent on most other YT channels......very nice.

Fantastic video - your content is going from strength to strength and filling a gap for intelligent watch commentary and design discussion. As for the squares, I've similar taste - I've owned several Reversos, like but never quite seem to buy the Santos and have recently been trying Monacos (a car thing really)! But the Reverso is queen - such a beautiful, complex watch. I always find new details and angles with it But while I admire the Duofaces, I wish they'd tame the size - for me, slightly smaller (even the Large Monoface) is more elegant. I sold a Grand Taille Extra Thin for this reason. But the dial layout and complications on your Duoface, well sublime!

Reverso indeed is the king! True. This is why, I am considering a medium monoface, simpler, slimmer.
As for monaco, the rally ones have something particular, it's either love or hate.

If you have "little" money: Tank and Monaco. Elegance + sport. Don't need more square watches !
Some great thoughts in these rectangular time machines. Although I do not own any of the references in the video I do have an old well worn cal 12 Monaco (modular Dubois Depraz chronograph) and a Reverso Duoface small seconds that is also well worn, both have plenty of wear mark over the years. As yet I do not have a Cartier but maybe at some point in the future if I can justify it. There are also a few other rectangular watches that are worth a look on a budget. The Longines Dolce Vita automatic sector dial for instance or the Oris rectangular for those with smaller wrists. A very well produced, edited and presented video. Many thanks for sharing.

I can’t speak for the Cartier Santos. But the Tag Monaco has a round movement in a square case. The Reverso has a rectangular movement in a rectangular case.

The tonneau one is very nice
Very enjoyable overview of three very different, very iconic watches. I am leaning to Cartier Santos medium in green - it has 100M water resistance (I live in Hawaii, that matters!), and the medium just fits my style and taste versus my giant Breitling and Omega - and that green alligator strap is just an over the top "I need/want this watch!" The Reverso is probably my next watch, but primarily because I enjoy the idea of swapping my watch face as an alternative to swapping the watch bands. I have a TAG, but will admit the Monaco, and TAG in general, just feels heavily over-marketed and under-delivering versus Cartier or JLC.
Another seruious one to mention: The *Rado True Square* .
Especially the Plasma High Tech Ceramic model.
The design and the material is exquisit and fits wonderful even on smaller wrist.
I've ordered one in green dial and can highly recommend.

Last time I commented on my Reverso experience. I bought it during covid from an AD, and didn’t try it on. It just didn’t fit, and I sold it at a loss. Your viewers should take great care in choosing the right size when buying a rectangular watch, because they fit very differently to the round ones, as I’m sure you know!

The squares / rectangulars, look bigger than the rounded ones. A pure example is the heuer monaco 39 by 39 which wears like a 44 mm watch :)

Please have a look at the American Art Deco rectangular bonanza that occured between 1930 and 1950? Gruen Curvex, Lord Elgin driver's watch, Bulova Academy Award, Hamilton Adrian, and that's just off the top of my head. I love rectangular watches, but I can't find a single watch today that comes anywhere near the style and panache of those Art Deco years.

Excellent video, beautiful aesthetics and thoughtful comments. I have the Santos medium and the blue previous model Monaco calibre 12. I mostly wear the Santos as I dress in a suit for work. It’s versatile, also goes well with casual jeans wear. The reverso Duoface is a grail, still need to save up. I tried it on many times since the current model came out in 2018. The medium is the right size for my 6.4inch/16 cm wrist but it’s a struggle to know which is best. I also like the large. Which reverso would be your choice?

For the monaco I prefer the non in house predecessors because they are thinner. so great choice there!
As for Reverso, I think I will go with a monoface, as the prices increased lately, the duoface is around 10K now. And I am exploring the idea of a preowned medium size.
@@BraveBeaters I agree the prices for Duofaces have gone bananas. 30-50 percent more expensive since 2018. For me it would have to be a second hand reverso. Perhaps the previous model would do it for me (270.8.54). The front dial is basically identical while the flip side (black dial) is considerably different from the new (current) model. All in all I prefer the new one but I doubt it’s worth the premium because I would likely mostly use the “front” dial. Going with the monoface is more true to the original design and purpose, I respect your choice. I guess I’m a bit obsessed with getting the “two watches in one” option.
It seems like we have similar wrist sizes, and the Santos is the next watch on my collection radar. Did you try on both the medium and large? I haven't tried them on in person yet, and am curious as to which would work best on my wrist. I love the idea of a no-date Santos, but worry it might be a tad small.
@@tricky92x Hi, the Santos is a wonderful addition and could even be part of a 1-3 watch collection. I tried them both on and while the large one doesn’t have overhang I still went for the medium because it looks slightly better proportioned. So it actually depends on what you are after. The medium is more formal and I often wear it when I’m in a suit (I have a job where formal attire is often required). But the medium goes equally well with jeans and a t-shirt for me. I guess the medium is more true to the original and what I associate with Cartier. The large on my wrist reminded me more of my Tag Heuer Monaco (although slightly less thick). So the large looks like a modern sports watch to me and not like how I imagine a Cartier Santos should look like. If your wrists are like mine both will fit you. But the medium leans more towards a dress watch that can second as a more casual wear. At first it does look a bit small but I got used to it. If you can wear a Rolex Explorer I (36 mm) the Santos Medium won’t feel too small in my opinion.
Thank you, it was both very interesting and aesthetic video, I think all of these three watches are beautifull, but they are very different also. All depends on your taste. By my opinion, I'd add the fourth - Tank and that's the rectangular watch I prefer in my collection.
Good video, Monaco is just too big. I would take a basic JLC Reverso, classy and classic. The Santos is beautiful, but JLC for me.

So many complications, two sets pf dials, hands and christals and it's still much thinner than the Monaco... Makes you wonder. I'd personally simply avoid thick chronographs since there are options.
JLC are something else. 10k seems a bargain. That one you filmed could use a clean.
You're way too soft on Cartier. Those defects are not because humans can't do better. But because they decided it's passable and they rather keep a bigger profit margin than do proper QC and improve the production process.

haha, true, probably because they speed up the production, they are least focused on QC.
There is still the modern Monaco Steve McQueen version, with the heritage logo on dial, crown and buckle, plus the flat blue dial. And it’s not that easy to design a square dial: Shinola tried and failed. Their take looks like a circular watch in a square case.
Across time, Tag launched some heritage versions with the original logo and a hesalite crystal.
@@BraveBeaters yes, that’s what mean. The one with the flat blue dial for instance or the previous Gulf model. They have a sapphire crystal now though. The downside is always - as with the Carrera re-issue and the new Speedmaster - a white ring around the circumference. It’s fine on the square glass of the Monaco, probably because of the sharp edges. I think Junghans managed best to mimick an acrylic crystal with sapphire - on the updated Max Bill series
Yeah, the Reverso isn’t really a square. The Tank is more of a square than the Reverso. I’m lucky to own a version of all these, the latest being a Reverso Classic in medium size.
