I’ve always loved this watch. I’m a car guy, I explained the significance of the Monaco and the epic coolness of Steve McQueen to my son many years ago when he noticed the watch in an ad. Years later, tragedy happened and my amazing boy died at 26yo. A bright fun guy that loved cars and motor sports. A couple months after he passed my wife and I went to NYC for a charity bicycle ride for breast cancer. We explored the city and had a brief escape from our crushing grief. While doing the mandatory tourist stroll down 5th I looked in a shop window and there it was. The Monaco. I’d never seen one aside from magazines. My immediate reaction was WOW, even more striking in person. A definite presence was felt. Then I started to cry uncontrollably remembering my son. I went in the store weeping, unsettling the staff no doubt. I was treated so graciously and thoughtfully. I told them I was going to buy the watch, I didn’t even know the cost. No other watch was looked at or considered. I tried on the watch and didn’t find it very comfortable, slightly awkward and bulky. I loved it lol. The store showed me the classic Monaco then brought me the Gulf edition that blew me away and I bought it. It’s design and shape has become so comfortable and definitely suits my personality. It’s more than a time piece to me. It’s a connection with my son that I miss every single day and the memories of him and our love of cars, Porsche’s and cool guys like Steve McQueen. It is cool , beautiful and I think the best representation to the original. I have my dads vintage blue dial and it is stunning watch. Don't know your age but I'm an old guy. I was in high school when my dad got his. My parents were pretty cool I thought at the time. They appreciated classic modern design. But even with that said this watch on his wrist at that time was a rarity to see. It was such a departure from the round circular watches of the time. Absolutely LOVE the Monaco. It had been my grail watch for 20 years and I finally just got one. "We went for the most faithful interpretation of Steve McQueen's Monaco" You guys know they still make a Calibre 11-powered (albeit a modern version of the C11) Monaco that features a left-hand crown and horizontal indices - JUST like the one McQueen wore? THAT is the quintessential Monaco, and it's the one that's on my wrist right now! And, while you did touch on the Monaco being (among) the world's first automatic chronographs, but you missed it's other contributions to horology - it was also the world's first square chronograph and the first water-resistant square or rectangular watch.
Another great video Teddy. When I first saw the Monaco, I thought it was strange and definitely not my style. As I've become more interested in horology over the past year+, I now appreciate what the Monaco is and it's importance in the watch world. I'd love to someday add one to my collection.
I bought a Cal 11 last year. Loved it, then left it in the box while I wore my other pieces. Tried to sell it but could not get close to what I was asking, so I held onto it.. It's growing on me more and more and I'm wearing it more often. It's really growing on me. I too am not a TAG guy, never have been. But this is truly lovely.
I also have the Cal 11 and didn't wear it as much as I would have liked mainly because of the black leather strap... so, I just recently put the new stainless bracelet that comes on the 02 models on it, and I'm wearing it quite a bit now. The stainless bracelet also gives it a bit of a vintage feel.
I personally love this watch! The design is classic and just "works" for me. I have a few watches on my wish list ahead of it, but I definitely want it in my collection some day. Great look at a classic piece Teddy!
I would never touch tag Heuer in the past but when I saw this watch I was very tempted so decided to give it a go and never looked back great looking and very comfortable watch up their with the favourites
I think it's a beautiful watch. Some people find it too flashy or flamboyant, but I think it's a watch that can be dressy and sexy at the same time, something only a few pieces have. It depends a lot on how you combine it.
I'm not sure if it's dressy, but most definitely sexy, it transforms a dressy outfit into one of those hybrid sporty dressy things. Kinda like the guys that wear running shoes with a suit, not the best equivalent because the monaco will not look foolish with a suit but still.

I tried one on in a boutique earlier this year when I was shopping around for a watch. It wore surprisingly well for having a small wrist, and I thought it had a lot of charm. I didn't end up getting it, but someday I might have it fill the chronograph slot in my collection.
I was a bit nervous about the size too, my wrists aren't particularly small, but it fit perfectly, and didn't feel bigger than it should, it has presence but it was nice!
An interesting review Teddy, I have the older caliber 12 version (running seconds at 9 and no hour counter). You're right it does take a little time to get used to the slab sided square dial with a chunk of sapphire on the top compared to the regular circular watches. I got mine at a reasonable price as it was new old stock discontinued. My example therefore also has the usual quirks if a modular dubois-depraz chrono module. The Steve McQueen version was also a left hand drive version allegedly to show people they no longer had to wind the watches, I guess they forgot that you still have to adjust the time. Clever marketing though. Another difference is that the minute markers are all horizontal on a non sunburst blue dial
Good evening Teddy! Thanks to you, I just bought this Tag Heuer Monaco Steve McQueen version. Tag should give you some marketing fee. I bought it at the mall today. I’ve been eyeing it for more than 2 years. Have a nice day.
Since school days I always thought of owning a Tag heuer someday. Later I learned that Tag isn’t getting appreciation from watch enthusiasts which gradually took me away from Tag. Seeing Teddy’s video today has made me develop interest in Tag Heuer again:)) Got to know about the Monaco as it was worn by Shah Rukh Khan in movie Don.
Crazy that you mention doing a series of videos about true iconic watches as I decided earlier today that I want my watch collecting journey to span some of the greats such as the Heuer Monaco, Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, Breitling Navitimer, Cartier Santos (or Tank), Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, Rolex Submariner to name a few. Definitely looking forward to this series!
Being a huge Steve McQueen / Le Mans fan from a very young age, this watch and the Rolex Submariner (James Bond) have always been special to me. I did buy one about 10 years ago, but went with the non-chrono model since I thought this one was a little out of proportion. But looking at it here, and especially with the new movement, I might have to swap mine for this new one.
I like some of the TAG watches I own a Monaco, I know that TAG has some good watches and some bad watches but so does every company including Rolex not everything is a hit sometimes it's a Miss. Though I prefer the original Heuer designed watches. I think that TAG Heuer makes poor marketing decisions when advertising, regardless they still make some very fine movements and technological breakthroughs. What Teddy missed with the Monaco is that it has several different iterations of the original some of them are not rounded indices inside the case but yet more situated to the squareness of the watch such as the caliber 11. I have the caliber 12 which uses that DupDP not the in house movement. This also Teddy sidestepped in explanation that there are different caliber types within the many years of the Monaco line. I love my Monaco for all the same reasons that Teddy described in the video for the unusual design and the great look in my opinion, something you don't see everyday.
Interesting watch, with a lot of personality for sure and it's a true icon. Probably it's not for me, but anyway it's undeniable that it's one of the most recognizable chronograph out there.
Nice review, Teddy. I've been a Monaco fan ever since I saw Steve McQueen wear it in the movie theatre. I took my son to the AD last week and we both tried on this iconic time piece, in the blue dial version, of course. It was a thrill to put it on my wrist.
This watch will always be part of my "gotta have it" line up. Everytime I walk by the high end jewelry store in my local mall and see one I think "yeah that's the one"
Looking at it in the store window it looked too bulky in my eyes and didn't feel it was really for me. Then I tried it on, and was wowed. Really a statement piece with a unique look and didn't feel as big on the wrist as it looked like it'd be when in the case. I can highly recommend anyone sitting on the fence about this one to try it on!
The ultimate racing icon. It represents a glorious romantic time and place in motorsports and clearly has enduring appeal to some. Quick actuality. Max, my friend and colleague at the 2021 Sun Valley Tour de Force was suddenly nowhere to be found while in the middle of our co-hosting stint on registration day for this annual charity high speed driving event in Idaho. I quipped on the PA " oh well folks Max has gone off the grid...hello Max where are you ?! One of the participants ( McLaren 720S ) yells out "he's in in the Simmons Jewelry van" I walk in, still live on mic and there's Max dropping 6K on a McQueen Monaco. Suffice to say, for a moment i was at a loss for words. I'm not usually disposed of words :) What better way to celebrate the most unique motor sports event on the planet, than taking ownership of one of the most unique motor sport timepieces. Thanks to Teddy's sound advice, i'm now all caught up in the hobby. I have a modest collection of $500-2000 Swiss (Tissot, Hamilton, Mido and Oris) I will add this one to the group and wear it "on the job"

Did you ever dream about being in love with someone unexpected, even when you're already tied to a partner you love in real life, and find yourself thinking about them during the following weeks? That's exactly what happened to me, but with this watch. I now love the Monaco 😂
I like this video about the Monaco ! Can you do in in-depth review of all the models, colors and movements, old and new ? That would be really helpfull in buying one, and understanding the differences.
I am a proud owner of the 2015 Cal 11 and would refer this being the McQueen Monaco. While I was admiring the Cal12 with the croc band, I prefer my Heuer release which is true to its origin. Nice movement on the new release and the 80h power reserve would come handy though.

Love my 50th anniversary gulf edition. Swapped the blue leather strap to an orange rubber one and always get comments/questions about it. Cool classic watch
Hey dude can you share which strap you got? I'm in terestrd in changing my strap on my Monaco gulf as well. Thanks :)
The Monaco calibre 11 was my first watch. Now I want this!
Still have mine my wife bought me 20 years ago I don’t wear as much as I should but I do bring it out it’s still a timeless piece
I tried one on in a boutique earlier this year when I was shopping around for a watch. It wore surprisingly well for having a small wrist, and I thought it had a lot of charm. I didn't end up getting it, but someday I might have it fill the chronograph slot in my collection.
You are tire kicker 😂
I was a bit nervous about the size too, my wrists aren't particularly small, but it fit perfectly, and didn't feel bigger than it should, it has presence but it was nice!
Well done, Teddy! You are the “go to” guy for all things watches.
The Monaco pairs well with my 2005 Camry LE. Makes me feel like Steve McQueen.
I was always confused that it doesn't have a tachymeter.
The Monaco with a Camry? Ok ...
It pairs well with an Aztek
@@zsb707 well it is a 4cyl SE
It pairs with a Chrysler 300c
Teddy please do more videos regarding Tag Heuer... Good job
The Calibre 11 is the one to get. Crown on the left and better dial aesthetics. Thx Teddy keep 'em coming....
In the recent, Monaco GP all the people on the podium were Wearing the Monaco
Carlos sainz and Lando Norris wore Richard mille tho?
Seeing Teddy’s video today has made me develop interest in Tag Heuer again:))
Got to know about the Monaco as it was worn by Shah Rukh Khan in movie Don.
In fact sharukh khan was the brand ambassador of Tag H. In india.
Buy what you like not what others say. Tag Heuer has HISTORY. New releases are awesome. Carrera GlassBox.
I got a blue one and it is an absolute icon. It makes me joy each time I look at my wrist😢
Monaco showed up on my list after seeing Anthony Bourdain wear it to the closing service at El Bulli. A total classic, timelessly cool.
Don't forget the Vostok Amphibia which you can get right now for some pocket change haha
I tried a Monoco Gulf on at the ADs. I was very surprised to see how good it looked. It has made it to the list.
I got one last week. If you want the Gulf, be quick as they are slowly disappearing from the market.
Gotta love the Monaco, such a unique design. I absolutely love it! Great video Teddy!
The heuer left crown mcqueen piece is the one to have
Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the Icon series!!
The Monaco definitely is iconic. I will certainly get one in the future. Great video
I love it, it's on my short list for luxury timepieces
Nah, if theres one thing they do right is marketing.
Interesting watch, with a lot of personality for sure and it's a true icon. Probably it's not for me, but anyway it's undeniable that it's one of the most recognizable chronograph out there.
I have a 1992 reissue and love it, had to get one as I’m a Steve McQueen fanatic!
Definitely an icon, both for the horological history and the cultural impact. Bold design that has stood the test of time.
Love this watch! That movement looks awesome too!
Thanks Teddy for reviewing this iconic Tag Heuer. The Monaco is on my short list of watches to own. I prefer the calibers with the crown at 9
Brilliant idea for a series Teddy. Look forward to more installments!
I have one and gets more attention than most anything else I have.
Please cover the Cartier Tank. That I think is an icon that isn’t given enough credit
Iconic!
Got one, and hopefully soon to buy a Monaco too.
Iconic or not, I love it. I had no idea about the origins when I first saw it, but its sporty, upbeat and fun, and that's okay in a watch.
I have the Blue Monaco and it's an absolute baller of an icon and a great looking watch to wear.
you should review some more tags. their aquaracers are gorgeous.
and the f1s are amazing. especially the quartz
I added the Calbrie 11 blue Heuer Monaco to my watch collection every one needs a Monaco in there watch Collection it’s beautiful and a Classic a real icon
I see teddy finally got tired of standing hahaha.
Omg😂😂
For me, I don't have to get used to it, I love it. Unique.
I honestly had never considered the Monaco as a watch I could ever like, at least aesthetically speaking.
Then, a few weeks ago, I dreamed about owning and wearing a green dial (lol) Monaco.
Did you ever dream about being in love with someone unexpected, even when you're already tied to a partner you love in real life, and find yourself thinking about them during the following weeks?
That's exactly what happened to me, but with this watch. I now love the Monaco 😂
Teddy. Great review. I own the Calibre 11 Reference CAW211P and absolutely love it for all the reasons you mentioned….plus it’s cool as hell.
You have what I want, hope it treats you well. Cheers 🥂
I really like the Monaco. Cool design, cool history. Pricey, but cool
i have a monaco cw2113 on a steel bracelet and i love it, i have worn it more than any of my other watches.
I love non round watches, specially this one and the vacheron constantin American
Vacheron is a beauty, but you also have to pay an additional 30k! I’ll stick with my Monaco.
@@schollat true. I can't really afford the VC anytime soon. So Monaco it is.
Contrary to Nico, the OG Monaco is a classic. Love it. Want the CAW211P. Soon come!
Love that watch, especially the calibre 02 model.
Teddy, even though you may feel you can wear it, I think it looks good on your wrist.
Being a physician and past IMSA/SCCA race driver; I love it as much as my old Rolex Panda. It says I am not your average (not your dad's watch).
Together with the RGM shop video, this is one of my favorite videos you've done. I just got a Monaco Gulf X watch, and I am in love with it. I've always been in love with it, but owning one is very special. Big racing fan! I've been to Le Mans, F1 races, Indycar, etc... This watch is a racing icon for sure! Thanks for sharing!
I love it! I think it is great looking. I really
thought it is great when I saw it on your wrist.
It is fun and sporty and unique.
Jeff
One of my dream watches!!
one of my favorite watches ever
one of these watches I need to try in person :) Like the 60s 70s vibes from it
Always loved this watch, and it will be my next purchase. Just trying to decide on Gulf or blue.
This square watch makes me wanna go in circles around it!
Finally, someone that doesn't hate tag just because it's "cool"
