    It would probably be better for a mother to sing music while pregnant and listen to music that makes the mother happy, this would pass on "happy hormones" to the child creating a bigger positive experience for the baby.
    Also there is no way to correlate the results between music played to baby and not without an extensive study as there would be no control and environmental differences. The fact that middle class women tend to do this more than say a poorer class woman doesn't mean the music makes the child smarter, it means the middle class child more than likely has better nutrition and better access to enriching programs.

    There are potentially other factors that cloud this issue: A parent that plays music to their babies obviously is interested in their child's education and are probably also doing other things to improve this as well (e.g. interactive toys, reading to them). These other activities may be more responsible for the higher test scores than the music. These types of things make good analysis difficult and subject to biased studies.

  • @LlamaRed
    @LlamaRed 8 років тому +2

    I'd imagine it's more a case of if parents go to the effort of playing classical music during pregnancy, they'd put more thought into raising them the best way they can, encouraging their intelligence to flourish more than parents that don't do as much with their children.

    I don't get why people play classical music in particular. The concept of classical music being seen as "smarter" is purely artificial; created by people and their perception of the world. An unborn child has no perception of the world, therefore the parents' usual musical taste would have the same effect as a Mozart piece.

      +SF Alba Because it requires more "thought" to listen to. In pop music, you listen to the singer, and everything else is more-or-less background noise, whereas in classical music the counterpoint formed by each of the different voices and individual characteristics and functions of instruments generally give one far more to listen and pay attention to.

Sometimes music that compliments a mood or something to help me relax or focus on a project. The music I listen to, probably scares my parents. My parents have been together since 1973 resulting in a total of nine children. No, none are adopted, and all where single births. Mom just didn't use birth control. Now that I got that out of the way, I listen to metal most of the time. And since I started listening to it, I have noticed that I am less prone to being over emotional(this had been an issue singe adolescents and even my early adult years) when at work, and other public places. I get over emotional turmoil a lot quicker then I use to. DNees actually did a video on the effects of metal music some time back. Go check it out.

    "Unlike your eyes, your ears require sound in order to fully develop." This is rather ambiguous. I assume you mean that you need stimulation in order for them to develop? The eyes need visual stimuli to develop... And a hell of a lot of it. Even in day to day life, if an eye is deprived of stimuli through a strabismus, an anterior visual pathway pathology, refractive error etc then the visual system won't develop.

    I think this "Mozart Effect" stuff is way overblown. I once went for a job interview at a large chain daycare facility, I won't say which one. They were BLASTING classical music in the infant room while the babies were napping. It was ridiculously loud and annoying to me and I thought how could that possibly be good for them? It wasn't even a good recording either. It was that fake synthesized type music. Don't get me wrong - I like classical music, but this was over the top ridiculous.

    As a classical music fan, let me tell you there is nothing neurologically special about it. It uses the same notes, rythmic structures, and key signatures as any music produced today. The only difference is the heavy use of string and wind instruments; which are sound I enjoy. Other than that, all western music is fundamentally the same.

    1st half - Music doesn't affect the baby...2nd half - music improves their neurological activity???

      +504russ Improving their neurological activity doesn't necessarily mean making them smarter.

      +alejandrinos +alejandrinos True, but intelligence or learning something new begins with new synaptic connections. I think as a musician I just had a knee jerk reaction, haha.
