    Transcriptional regulator PRDM12 is essential for human pain perception www.nature.com/ng/journal/v47/...
    “Pain perception has evolved as a warning mechanism to alert organisms to tissue damage and dangerous environments. In humans, however, undesirable, excessive or chronic pain is a common and major societal burden for which available medical treatments are currently suboptimal”
    Why do we experience physical pain?
    io9.gizmodo.com/5946522/why-do...
    “There's no doubt about it: Pain sucks. We all hate it - and some people go to immense lengths to try and get rid of chronic pain. And yet, it's a constant part of human experience. But why do people feel physical pain? How does it even work? And does everybody feel pain the same way?”

      Weird thing is... when I see pain from a movie or a video, I feel it. Like someone getting a needle in the eye, I feel it in that specific eye.. also, I was looking at a video for cluster headaches on UA-cam, and believe it or not but I literally now have a cluster headache WITH the symptoms they described. Also, I used to have fillings using a micro drill in the dentists, and everytime I hear a similar noise or even the WORD “drill”, the one specific tooth feels uncomfortable and starts to ache. I need help xD........

    So the first idea they had to test pain was to shoot someone with a laser, and not just to pinch that person a little?

      +Vashu627 I think it's because the amount of pain those people experience should be equal and quantifiable. Cause, u know, Science. But of course shooting people with lasers is really cool.

    • @jctoad
      @jctoad 8 років тому +3

      +Lex Sum If they only tried this with the laser then their study may have been flawed. Burning them with a laser only tests for pain from heat. Were the subjects also able to feel pain from other types of stimuli? Burn them with a laser, then punch them in the face just to make sure. Now that's good science.

    • @GuyWithAnAmazingHat
      @GuyWithAnAmazingHat 8 років тому +1

      +Vashu627 You can precisely adjust the power output of a laser providing accurate tests. Unless you make a pinching robot that pinches with controllable and specific amount of force, a laser is still much more simple and effective.

    Because she didn't feel anything she didn't realize she was injuring herself when she would bite her fingers, lips and tongue.
    She did it so much her fingers, mouth and tongue were deformed from all the biting.

    Pain is not pain, as we may understand it. While signals come from the body, those signals are not painful. They are just electromagnetic and chemical signals of information. It is the interpretation of the mind, brain, and central nervous system of the signals that create the pain. Pain is a subjective experience. While the signaling from the body is very complicated, the result of this complex system is information is a signal. The signal is not painful. The interpretation of the signal determines if you have pain or not.
    Since pain is a subjective interpretation of information, each person will interpret the same signal differently. This is called "pain tolerance." Some people will have high pain tolerance, and others will not. The level of tolerance experienced will depend on memories of past experiences.
    All is in the mind first and then in the body. This is a feedback system. The neutral signal goes from the body to the mind for processing and interpretation. A response is sent back to the body how to respond to the input signal.
    When you believe the body experiences pain, you approach healing one way. When you understand pain is an interpretation for the mind, healing becomes a much different process.

    It'd be cool if we could rewire our nerves so that pain was sensed as something different. Maybe something more like tickling. Then, we would still be able to consciously know that something is wrong but without the horrible feeling. It is more of a "red flag," hut still you could probably train yourself to react similarly to it as the normal sensation of pain.

    Its not just people feel pain or don't. There are different levels of feeling pain.
    If you have a high paint tolerance like I do, you still react to intense pain that causes immediate damage but something that is hurting you slowly you don't feel until it causes substantial damage. Like lifting weights and the advice is to push through the pain or feel the burn - very bad for high pain tolerance people. Now I got injured shoulders for years.
    The lesson? if you got high pain tolerance than you have to stop whatever is causing even a little bit of pain or risk major injury.

    I'd be interested in a video talking about pain threshold. Why are some people more tolerant of more pain and some are less tolerant? Is our pain threshold born with us or do we get used to something that's painful and eventually it doesn't bother us as much? I'm a ballet dancer and I dance in pointe shoes all the time and while yes it is painful, I'm still able to do it no problem. I find that my pain threshold seems to be higher in different activities too but I'm not exactly sure why that is.

    So does a high tolerance to pain and opioid based pain killers mean I produce too much enkephalin? I can feel pain, but it stays at a tolerable level, and opioids have no effect.

    does that affect any other sort of sensations? if you can't feel pain can you be tickled or enjoy a massage or is it just exclusive to pain?

    I wish we could only feel pain when theres damage, not pain like 10 minutes after cutting your finger or breaking ur arm, then we could heal and stuff without uncomfortable and if we did try and move the arm or touch the finger there would be pain but not constant pain like stinging

    My girlfriend can't feel pain so when she couldn't find the oven mitts to take out some cookies she decided to just use her hands... needless to say they started to blister within an hour but she couldn't feel a thing and went on with her day.

    1:02 she said that nerve cells talk to each other by Sodium ions, but actually sodium ions are released to initiate an action potential within the nerve cell itself, communication between nerves are done through synapses using neurotransmitters like ACTH.
    Not the point of the video just thought i'de point that out.
    Stay awesome Dnews.

    Most people in the comments just have a high pain tolerance, the people that really don't feel it will not notice the injury until afterwards.

      +geezusispan They actually do.
      My best friend has a ressesive redhead gene, and anesthesia almost doesn't work on her.
      And she has a ridiculously high pain tolerance.

    • @fireriffs
      @fireriffs 8 років тому +1

      +geezusispan Nope. It's actually true. Ask an anesthesiologist, they really do have to use more anesthesia to knock them out. No one is sure why though. DNews even did a video on this.

    sometimes you don't want to feel pain though
    what if someone is like constantly punching you
    well at that point you know he's attacking you and you know you should get away
    whilst at the same time your body is saying
    HEY LOOK LOOK THIS GUYS PUNCHING YOU, GET AWAY QUICK
    you know you have to get away and your body is just being a nuisance at that point
    so whilst the pain is stopping you from escaping
    it's also constantly telling you that you're being punched do something
    it's like a really annoying bully inside you saying stop hitting yourself
