Why focusing on a visual task will make us deaf to our surroundings
medicalxpress.com/news/2015-12...
"Examination of people's ability to detect sounds during the visual demanding task also showed a higher rate of failures to detect sounds, even though the sounds were clearly audible and people did detect them when the visual task was easy."
Visual perceptual load induces inattentional deafness
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/artic...
"A wealth of research has suggested that the extent to which focused attention on a task results in reduced perception of irrelevant information depends on the level of perceptual load in the task."

As much as Julia holds my attention I did see Trace pop in.
same here.. its brobably because i have adhd
so did I . apparently we're not blind
+George Cataloni Same here XD
+Kenny Mccormick It's mostly because of the internet. Our attention spans are very short, sadly.
+BlueTJ well dnews also did an episode about adhd and it was found long before internet. so im not really confident about blaming everything on internet
One day my mom had her head buried in a book, and I thought: Since I can easily climb out of my bedroom window...I walked in the front door, "Hi Mom," she said "hi", I walked to my bedroom...I walked in the front door, "Hi Mom," she said "hi", I walked to my bedroom...I walked in the front door, "Hi Mom," she said "hi", I walked to my bedroom...I walked in the front door, "Hi Mom," she said "hi", I walked to my bedroom..I walked in the front door, "Hi Mom," "WH- STOP IT!!!"
Hilarious!
I agree. I laughed so hard at her I couldn't breathe!
lmao I'm going to have to try that
Let us know how many times you walk by, or whatever before they realize something aint right!
Phoenix Knight haha ok
Sometimes I wish the voice on the bus would yell the name of the next stop three times like this.
+WalruszMester You get pre-recorded bus announcements? In Australia that happens on trains as I suspect it does in most countries, but not on buses at all. We simply have to pay attention to where we are in our journey.
+Justin M how barbaric, I'd miss the stop every time especially if I didn't know what the destination looks like.
I keep hearing from people that here in Europe we have really good public transport, and how bad it is, for example, in the USA, which really surprises me. And I can't even say I live in Berlin or London. This is good ol' Budapest.
+Aeon Calcos lmao
+Justin M We have the Metrobus in Sydney... Not that it ever works...
I wish I had this, I find it almost impossible to read if there's noise
Seriously.....same.
ikr
+Stephanie Martin (Lady Azkadelia) Same here. If somebody is talking whilst i'm trying to read i cant take in what i'm reading, at all. My eyes will look at every word and go down the page as normal, but when I get to the end of a page I realise I haven't taken any of it in. I hate it so much.
yep
***** yes whenever that happens i have to put a book down and have to take a little break
So this is why looking for a street sign while driving causes me to turn down my stereo so I can see better..
+Lyrical Fluffer yuuuuuuuuup
same thing happens to me when I'm reading the comments of a playing UA-cam Videos..I have to rewind the videos sometimes. ..lol
+GAZAMAN93X you mean all the time, i literally just did it twice in this video
Same.
***** lol?
Ayoub Minen lol. I did it over 5+ times
***** hmm . interesting
I have been yelled at many times before because I couldn't hear people calling me while reading a book.
Now I can share this science with them to prove I wasn't ignoring them!
I've actually seriously noticed that when I start thinking really deeply, I actually go both deaf and blind temporarily. Then, as I'm coming back out of it and becoming more aware, I suddenly see and hear and notice that I couldn't do either whatsoever for the past several minutes.
and then you realize you were staring into someone's soul and then it's awkward
Meagan Collins "Sorry, just... staring... into your soul. Nothing personal. I just zone out sometimes."
+Meagan Collins YES. This. Fml lol.
I thought I was the only one.
Micah Philson ikr? It happens to me sometimes xp
I saw Trace's head pop-up in the corner of the screen. Was that an experiment like the gorilla video? :P
+v zxt Name's Trace.
HOLyPumpgun | Gaming Oh that's right :derp:
+v zxt Yep, I saw him too, at 1:20. I'm just glad I wasn't the only one that noticed him.
Am I the only one who can be reading a book quickly and retaining it all and listening to conversations around themselves? People always freak out when I'm reading a book and they suddenly ask me a question and I'm able to answer it without needing them to repeat themselves.
I go deaf when I'm reading/typing too. Or I can hear them, and I think in the moment that I understand what they said, but a few moments later I have no recollection of what they said to me.
You guys should talk about how marchers in Drum Corps or Marching bands have to multitask on up to 10 things at once
did anyone else see the face at 1:19?
I seen it at first
I was like wtf when I saw it xD
+Deep Trapasia yeah me too LOL 😂😂😂
+Emma Couch I did!
Probably wasn't focused enough...as always. :D
Not until I replayed it!
I can focus on anything and still be completely aware of my surroundings. I thought everyone could when I was little. Now when I come across people that can't it makes them seem kinda stupid and annoying to talk to because they always zone in on something like their phone or whatever else is going on.
I agree minus the stupid part. I always felt like it was just extremely rude. I find if you tell "HEY!" They always angrily reply "Hold on a minute!!!" So I know they physically CAN hear me if they choose to. I still believe the 'deaf-while-texting' thing is mostly choice or at least a personality flaw. Who knows. Perception is reality and perceptions can be flawed, so maybe we're both wrong. I still mostly agree with you because I'm the same way. I listen to multiple conversations at once, I type and talk simultaneously, I read and listen simultaneously, and I'm incapable of not hearing what people say to me.
+Venom Snake I am the same way, but instead of stupid I saw it as rude and more as +Nick C said.
We have efficient brains! :) :P
I don't think the Internet hurts our ability to pay attention but does reduce our patience for sure
This was an excellent episode.
lol is this why we turn down the music when we're driving in unfamiliar streets?
+VogueHawaiiNei pretty much
In one of my classes that the teacher was really bad, I could sit there and read a book and completely zone out, but there was this one kid, and whenever he spoke I absolutely could not concentrate on my book.
Once I started reading in my bedroom because I had some time to kill before going to my family dinner, when my phone got a text message. I turned it and saw multiple texts from my mom saying the same thing:
'Hunny, where are you??'
I checked the time... I was 2 hours late.
I worked a tech support job and definitely had this issue on occasion. Keep this in mind next time you have to call a help line! We're doing research to fix your stuff asap.
I love how Trace's head popped out of the lower left hand corner. Clever test! :~)
Lol when they were talking about inattentional blindness at 1:21 trace's head popped up 😂
Oh, how I wish this happened to me... I have to listen to instrumental music while doing anything in a noisy environment or I can't focus. It's really annoying. Sometimes I pretend I don't notice people when I'm trying to focus... But I always hear them... Always.
I love my eyesight, I love my vision and I love my sense of sight!
My friend has this really REALLY bad. It could be just the 2 of us in a room, and he's playing the video game or doing something on his computer, and I could repeatedly say his name over and over and over and he will never respond. I could be saying somethin about something to him (because who else, theres only us) and he will not know I was talking to him at all. It's so unbelieveable!
I was reading announcements in my school on the television which was in the gym and my gym teacher was trying to form teams. He had to call my name 3 times for me to actually hear him and join the team.
It's like when you are driving and trying to find an address, and turn down the stereo to see the road signs better.
I love this episode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I noticed the Trace head. I'm very alert at all times and often focus on lots of other things while doing something. I'll often listen to music while reading things.
I want to see this study done again focusing on elementary and middle school students because that's when this sort of thing was a bigger issue in my life
thanks!!!!! im soooo gonna show this to my mom....
so why do people turn down the volume in the car just to 'see' better
I never miss my train stops when I'm reading anything, though I only read enough to be aware of my surroundings.
When I was a percussionist in high school and college. I'd have times where fellow percussionist would come up to me and ask me something while i was practicing. I'd be so focused on the measures I was playing that they would scare the hell out of me and I'd end up yelling some 4 letter word.
I love my hearing, I love my ears and I love my sense of hearing!
When I focus really hard on things, my breathing slows down much more than its meant to. I have to take a break every few minutes to actually breathe...
I'm glued to my computer most of the time but I've never experienced being deaf while reading. In fact I sometimes am more sensitive to hearing my name being called while I'm doing something, even if it was just someone outside saying a different word that sounds like my name.
I have a friend who's totally deaf while reading even if the room is completely silent. We make fun of him for it.
I, for one, do not have this tendency... In fact, no matter how hard I try to concentrate on a book, if I hear a conversation nearby my brain will focus almost entirely on that. The harder I try to study for that test, the more I recall the whispers of the girls at the next table!
Yep definitely when texting and someone is talking to me, I'm bad at multitasking.
takes practice but you can do as many things as physically possible at same time you just have to prioritize in real time.
it took a while but i love listening to classical music while reading to make it more movie like in my head, now i can read and listen to music at the same time and its freakin amazing if you find the right song. for example. World War Z and the Dark Knight end credits theme go incredibly well together. if you love instrumental music and reading, def give it a try. your reading experience will change big time.
i have a really big problem in life. i can't shut of sounds.
when i saw the gourilla test the first time i managed to count and see the gourilla and count the passes, but i lost count because the airconditioning system started and made a quiet hum.
This, somehow, explains why its hard for me to read labels in the grocery store....
Wow. I didn't see Trace in the video until I saw comments about him being there! Interesting indeed!
When I read a book and listen to music, I can't hear the music after a while, because I am so focused on reading my book.
1:20 Hahahaha Best Trace face ever :''''D
Could you make a video about Boris Sidis' education techniques and william james sidis' (his son) achievements
This is good information. I have to wonder what causes me to still respond to perceived stimulus though without actually registering what it was? For instance, while doing something on my phone or playing a visually demanding video game if someone around me asks me a question I'm capable of understanding that a question was asked of me and will even usually respond with an "uh-huh" but once the task is completed I'll need them to repeat what they said for me to actually comprehend it.
I was so focusedoon the conversation with my dad I didn't notice the woman walking by was flipping us off. It probably didn't help that I didn't have my glasses on though...
3:00 She noticed me!
Trace popped in. That was awesome.
i needed to find a way to be deaf whenever I want, thanks.
I rarely not hear something, even if I am really focusing on playing a game or reading a book.
I had the entire bus yelling at me to get off when I was in Middle School. I was reading. I only noticed I missed my stop about 10 minutes later.
Interesting. Never experienced such a phenomenon.
Finally scientific proof why children walking home from school with their music on and reading their phone get hit by trains that are honking very loud.
This is why I have to turn the music down when I have to be super concentrated on driving.
unless your fear of success is directly attached to the thing your reading/doing
At 1 minute and 20 seconds Trace appears in the bottom right, almost didn't notice
I have tinnitus. I notice any noise or talk while reading, because I can't focus on the words alone and need another welcome distraction from the noise in my head.
I once read something written so poorly that I actually stopped chewing the food in my mouth.
God Damnit, didnt notice the Head popping up. And here I thought I was good at still staying alert.
Could your next video be on "Why People Think You Want To Talk To You When You Have Headphones On"?
I must be special because I can hear what people around me are saying when they address my plus look, text on my phone. Of course I find it rude to keep texting, so I answer the in person person first then continue.
Along with Trace popping up, there is a "Ding Dong" sound playing in the video too. I kept pausing just to make sure it wasn't coming from somewhere else.
If I went deaf while reading I wouldn't get so pissed off with the noise and interruptions while I'm trying to read.
that background tune with high pitches is frustrating, when watching video on low volume, to hear speech. I thought for 4 minutes, that someone's phone was going nuts with notifications or something.
This happens to me a lot in class like this one time the teacher called my name multiple times and someone waved a hand in front of me and it wasn't until someone nudged me that I looked up from my book
I *wish* I had this problem. I am always annoyed by sounds when i'm trying to read, I just want to scream "BE QUIET!" lol
i need complete silence when i read, otherwise i find myself rereading the same paragraph over and over again, yet not comprehending what it's saying. i also can't write if there's a lot of noise.
The man on the side of the screen! LOL.
Lol my mom always does this and I used to think she was ignoring me and I'd get so annoyed but I would literally stand in front of her and yell
Make sure you know what is behind you when reading this.
Yeah.. hate people who zone out 100%. How can you be so dull not notice anything is what gets to me, I wouldn't even dare to think about something if I knew I zone out a lot. I'm aware if someone speak to me, although I might not understand a single word said, but I clearly notice someone spoke to me.
Maybe this is a good trait when you actually 'only' read, personally though, sounds like an excuse to not even try have minimum attention on your surrounding.
I go completely deaf even while walking, sitting, doing chores etc... I get totally zoned out ... I can't hear anything... My friends, classmates usually yell my name, I don't hear it and later they come to me and say we've been shouting your name lol ... Well I'm technically not deaf, my ears are just fine, but I zone out ... I can't fix this, somebody please help ... Even Elon Musk had the same problem...
Elon and I share the same problem, hope we share the same net worth too lol
You could also say it's "Polarization of Attention", a theory by Maria Montessori. It's very similar and just a thing, humans do, as you said.
I don't know what this is like. I unfortunately hear and see everything around me all the time no matter what I'm doing. Even listening to and watching this video whilst I type this comment...
One time in 3rd grade I was reading a book during free time, and then my teacher told everyone to put their books away. Everyone else put away their reading material and pulled out their math books and math homework, because the teacher had started teaching a lesson. (In third grade we had 1 teacher for everything) Then, later on, the teacher asked me what the answer to a problem was. Only when she said my name did I look up and notice that no one else had their books out. The entire time I hadn't heard a word, and continued reading. So that's my story xD
i read the speedometer so intensely that i forget to keep track of the road
Interesting! This happened to me a few days ago when reading. Would that same go for writing? I listen to audio books a lot of the time when writing my stories, it really helps get the creative juices flowing, some of the times I filter out the sounds but only for short periods of time.
i have adhd and i do not have this problem.. i will literally watch, read a book, watch youtube and text at the same time
Yeah, I tried to explain this to my mom and as always she found my excuses 'invalid' and came up with this ridiculous reason to overturn my factual excuse..
I think the effect is even stronger if you're reading in a different language.
So many times in school I would look up to see my class halfway through minute maths (when a teacher would literally shout equations at us in quickfire) that I completely had not heard because I had my nose in a book
Anyone else notices the tones going on in most of the video? they're pretty high, almost musical but it doesn't seem to be.
now you know why you turn down the radio when looking for an address in an unknown street! :)
One time, while I was reading a book with some headphones in, my friend managed to get about seven or eight plastic spoons in my hood. When I went to put the book away and bent over (we were in school), they all fell out of my hood.
"Published in the journal of.." I hear this in every damn video.
i'm not deaf when i'm reading i just either aren't listening, don't want to talk to you, or both
Yay! I thought I was the only one what this happens to!!
I wonder how this would effect someone like me that is adhd and can hear triggers while trying to concentrate on reading, etc. I wonder how the results would change. :-/
This drives my friends nuts when they actually have to tap my shoulder or wave their hand in ground of my face before I realise their there lol
I have to sleep with an oxygen concentrator running. Some mornings, when I wake up, I can't hear it at all. I find that this seems to mean I got a really good night's sleep. If it's harder to wake up, then I do hear it. Odd.
Looks like Julie needs some Dnews...
I'm so sorry.
I sometimes don't hear the video because I'm reading the comments 😅
Like Trace's head coming in the screen 😂
I still noticed and laughed at the trace popping in, regardless.
when im about to go asleep i go deaf until i get up
so your not gonna tell me what those beeps were about and Chase popping up in the corner?
0:00 Actually me o-o (That many people saying Julia at once is giving me anxiety XD)
Pls answer this question!!!! How is it possible to hear the voice in your head while reading???
