  • With 2020 throwing us all sorts of curveballs when it comes to media camps Specialized decided to host a private camp to showcase the new 2021 Stumpjumer EVO. Thinking outside the box Specialized had us come meet up with Product Manager Steve Saletnik, Marketing Manager (and absolute shredder) Allan Cooke, Paris Gore behind the lens as well as Jordi Cortes from Fox to give the Stumpy a proper shakedown in Bellingham Washington. Having this much one on one time with the guys from Specialized, Paris, and Jordi was a big treat. We understand how hard the planning for this was and appreciate the effort and time that was given to put together an awesome trip! The riding was top-notch, from massive jumps on day one to some seriously rowdy shuttle trails in Darrington this new Stumpy bleeds fun! We even had some time out on a sailboat, pretty much the perfect mix for a weekend in the sun.
    Out of the box to the naked eye you may think there is nothing “new” when putting last year’s model side by side with this new bike. Well, that could not be further from the truth. This bike has a long list of new features and changes for 2021. Starting with the frame each size receives its own unique carbon layup focused to keep stiffness the same for all riders. For example, an S4 has a larger tube diameter than the S1. It doesn’t stop there. The kinematics for each size is tuned specifically for the weight of the rider in that size category. The goal with this was to provide the same ride experience and feel to every rider. In testing, they did play around with multiple layups on each size with their testers finding a noticeable difference across the size range. Seat Tubes, headtubes, and chainstays all get size-specific changes, this is something we really think sets this new bike apart from the rest. All these small details translate to a bike that fits and rides as you want it to. With sizing spanning from S1 to S6 there are more than enough options to fine-tune your choice for how you want the bike to ride. Have lots of tight twisty sections? Size down. Want to get the most high-speed stability for rowdy shuttle laps? Size up. It may make your initial purchasing decision a bit harder but in the long run you will have a bike catered to the terrain you ride most.
    As far as adjustments go there is no lacking there. Both the headtube angle and chainstay length is an easily adjustable mid-ride with a simple 5mm hex. There is a flip-chip located on the chainstay that gives you two options, either high or low. This gives you 7mm in bottom bracket height to play with just that adjustment alone and 5mm of added wheelbase in the low setting. Swap out the position of the headset cup and you can squeeze out a few more mm’s in either direction. With the 3-position headset adjustment, there is a 2.5-degree variance. On the steep side you will be blazing through switchbacks with a 65.5-degree HT angle and on the low side of 63 degrees dropping into that steep fall line at warp speed won’t be a hard decision to make. There will be an aftermarket link available that will allow you to run a 27.5” rear while retaining all the same geo numbers, this is an awesome bonus for those of us that really like to adjust a bike based on the zone we are riding in. There will also be a limited version that ships as a mullet.
    This bikes kinematics favors a generous amount of anti-squat early on in the travel but tapers off to below zero at full compression. This of course gives you a great pedaling experience while still sending sketchy huck to flat gaps with confidence. The knowledge and experience developing the new Demo and Enduro bikes translated directly into this frame, the 21’ Stumpy’s leverage rates and axle path is pulled directly from those bikes transforming it into a small bump and big hit eating machine. This new kinematic setup gave the team a chance to worry less about the shock tune for pedaling efficiency and rely on the frame itself. The RX specific shock tune comes custom-tuned for each size adding to the overall experience on this bike, a heavier rider on a S6 is going to require a significantly different rebound tune than a rider on a S1.
    The build kit on this bike is stellar, there are very few if anything at all you would want to upgrade. Our test bike featured the new 160mm Fox 36 Performance Elite and 150mm DPX2. During the time we have spent on the bike both have performed outstandingly well.
    Sram’s XO drivetrain worked flawlessly. I did manage to bend a derailleur hanger but with the Sram universal hanger being used it was a breeze to pick up a new one at my LBS. Big fan of that! The Code RSC 4 piston brakes and 200mm rotors front and rear oozed stopping power.

      Thank you! Been riding it quite a bit just outside Seattle at Raging River, Duthie and Tiger. Been a blast so far. Duthie Hill does not have much more than maybe 100’ of elevation loss and has a good amount of flow trails with some some wicked jumps, the short setting on the chip and steep on the headset keeps it super playful. Further east the trails get significantly steeper and fast, slack setting on the headset and low on the chip gives it a significantly better feel for rowdy stuff. Really glad I did the S3 size 👍

    What is your opinion on the stuntjumper vs the hightower? And what are the differences between the two especially when climbing? The adjustable geo on the stuntjumper is neat, but how much worse does the stuntjumper climb compared to the hightower?

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  3 роки тому +1

      Well, they are both good bikes that have their inherent design characteristics. We all know VPP bikes climb amongst the best of them in terms of efficiency whereas FSR bikes have their own benefits in other situations. If climbing is a big factor for you and you spend lots of time going uphill, you'd probably like heh Hightower better, although with the shock's platform engaged, this is improved some over previous generations.

    I love the idea of adjusting HTA separate from BB height. I have a lot of long rocky climbs and steep, narrow traverses that a low BB is a no-go, but I still want a slack HTA coming down. Other days on beginner level climbs and buffed out descents a low BB is welcomed. EVO could be a 1 bike quiver, even with a piggy 3lbs over my SB6.

      The Enduro is going to be a lot more fun in the bike park, it still pedals pretty darn good. I like to be over biked personally. With that said the EVO in the low settings is quite the machine! Overall with lot's of days in the park you will be happy with the Enduro

      @@TheLoamWolf Asking them questions was great - more of that! I'd have loved for you to have dug more into why someone would pick this over the Enduro though - every review says that bike pedals really well, not just really well for a 170mm bike, but actually really well. And is amazing downhill, and if it does everything so great then why would you need this? Also interesting is that none of the Specialized EWS team use the Enduro, which seems a little contradictory?
