I have the same bike, I wasn't so happy on my local SoCal trails, which are sandy, and rocky. I felt it was a little sluggish when climbing and the BB is low. I flipped the chip and put on Specialized Ground Control 2.35 tires, WOW! The bike now rips on a flats and climbing and is still stable on downhills.
Yea I did the same with the flip chip to the High Pos. Right now I have a Ground Control t7 Trail on the front and a Fast Trak T5 on the rear and the Bike feels amazing, both are 2.35. I wonder how the Bike would feel with two MAXXIS Aspen 😁
Yes, Clint the Pinhotis are much more washed out than even last year and something I noticed in that first section when I rode it earlier this year. You will also notice when you down close the poplar tree they smoothed it out and made it more flowy. Great video and review. Keep Shred'N
I have the timber bell. Works great on the trail alerting hikers. Also my buddies can hear me behind them so they wouldn’t have to worry unknowingly leaving me behind if I crash.
I loved this video. I have ridden this several times (BC, P1, P2) and it’s alway fun to watch others ride the same trails. I have made the decision to stop riding the first section of Bear Creek because of those three technical features. I had a nice crash on the first one. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for including some video time for climbing on this bike. As much as I want to buy the Stumpjumper Expert, I think that for me, I have to decide on the cross-country Epic Expert. I hate that the Epic doesn't have the SWAT Box. However, I was able to see the two bikes side by side. It has to be the Epic! The geometry and intended purpose differences are really striking to the eye. Where the Epic is relatively weak - fast aggressive downhill riding over varied terrain, including technical stuff - it excels in all the other parts of riding such as climbing, agility and long hours of just spinning the pedals for recreation.
The beginning of the downhill portion of the trail sounded like a train going over the tracks, for about 30 seconds or so. Interesting how the bike was so quiet that it allowed that sound to go through. And if you want to get rid of that bell sound, almost completely, you could use an equalizer in a DAW - an EQ that will let you see where the bell's frequency range is, and modify it however you like - you could lower the dB, and even almost eliminate the audio just in and/or around that frequency range. Nice bike! I test road one but the dealer wouldn't work with me on the price so I passed..it's a bit pricey. Ended up buying a Rockhopper though and it's a good bike too. Rockhopper is fast and agile, climbs well!

I've owned the Salsa Timberjack, Surly Karate Monkey and the Salsa Horse thief 29er and the Stumpjumper is top notch, it climbs like a goat, "I didn't like the tires" I switched to Maxxis DHF on front and aggressor on back which I think elevated the Stumpy. The brakes mine came with are the SLX 4 piston and they are powerful. Anyway, I don't think you can go wrong with the Stumpy. Ride fast, then ride faster.
My custom built stumpy is almost done. Can't wait for it. Test road the Evo and normal stumpy and the normal stumpy just feels awesome for my riding style. Putting on codes for longer descents.
Hey Clint, love your channel. As a bigger guy I'm looking for a fs bike. From what I understand a lower leverage rate is better. Any chance you know of some bikes in the 2.1-2.3 range?
Honestly, that is not something I’ve done a lot of research on. My advice is to just do some Google searches on low leverage ratio bikes. Another option is to get a bike that allows you to swap out for a coil shock. Companies like transition usually design their bikes for doing this. Let me know what you find!
I’m glad you said that because that’s what I was thinking when I was riding. I’ve made that first tight switchback before but it seems like it’s gotten more difficult, especially when it’s wet. My front tire slipped out and I had to put my foot down.

I tend to think of the 130/140 mid-travel bike like the Stumpjumper as the worst of both worlds. I prefer either the light and efficient Downcountry bike like the Epic Evo or Spur. Or, the burlier and more capable All-Mountain bike like the Stumpjumper Evo or Sentinel. Mid-travel bikes like the Stumpjumper are seldom light and efficient nor are they capable. Having ridden the Epic Evo, Spur, Stumperjumper, and Stumpjumper Evo, the Stumpjumper was my least favorite. The Epic Evo just wasn't progressive enough. If the Epic Evo had the geometry of the Stumpy, it would be amazing. However, I give the Spur and Stumpy Evo high praise as one of the best Downcountry bikes and All-Mountain bikes currently being made. But the Stumpy just gets a "meh" from me. A good bike but nothing special. If Specialized fixed the geo on the Epic Evo, they could just dump the Stumpy and no one would miss it. Where you're riding, it looks like you would be having a lot more fun riding the Stumpy Evo. It weighs about the same and pedals and climbs as well as the Stumpy but is so much more capable. Maybe if you put a 150mm Fox 36 fork on the Stumpy, that would spice it up.

We got shuttled to the top of Bear Creek from the Mulberry Gap adventure place back in May. So much fun.

I got the bell for bears (Montana) but hikers *always* thank me for it.
I usually just slam on the brakes. The loud noise gets the hikers scurrying off the trail.

Are those trees as close to your handlebars as they look on video?
I think it’s exaggerated a bit by the GoPro. But it is East Coast mountain biking which means lots of shade but lots of trees.
What psi did you run in the shock for 30% sag. I noticed on my stumpjumper if I ran about 28 % sag it climbs much better

I think that it would ride OK but would have less cornering grip for the front tire.
The opening single track above the overlook has really eroded in the past year! That first switchback is really tough these days!

Just get some hydra hubs and you won’t need that damned bell lol, it’s on both parties to look down trail and be aware of the trails uses.
