@@TheCursedJudge you know for a creator of one of the biggest horror franchises I know of Scott is probably the most kind and thoughtful person in today's world (give or take). I think that this video not only shows that but it also shows how much Scott put into it. Not for the money but for the fans not only to enjoy but for him to make storytelling fun and truly memorable.
I think the best theory explanation out there yet for me, would be "Game Theory: Fnaf Complete Timeline with Ruin DLC", by UA-camr "NEUTRAL". Chack it out, it's AMAZING!!!. Tho I recommend at least to check out the all the games walkthroughs completely if you previously didn't.

as much as i prefer the rest of the series to security breach, i have to appreciate scott’s evolution as a game dev it’s really inspirational
Partnering with Steel Wool for VR and SB, really shows Scott was limited in development skill, but not vision, thus he partnered with someone who want to bring his vision to life. Despite some of the flaws with the 3D games I love them, even the fact that while developing the movie he'd left Warner Bros and eventually went to Blumhouse shows further that he cares, the long wait time shows he genuinely wants this movie to be amazing. He even takes criticism like with FNAF World and tries to make up for it by adding some really cool stuff in later updates. I hope Scott will still be heavily involved, just not as public because of the idiots who hated on him. I hope he's doing well.
I feel like steel wool made a lot of the decisions regarding security breach or at least had a big hand in making them. Cause some of the game doesn’t feel like Scott at all

He's someone that turned the horror of rejection, negativity, cold feedback, and more, into something the world won't forget for millennia. Scott essentially created his own generation of experiences for humanity to enjoy and cherish. He's like any other person, but he did something incredible. Good work.

I never heard that game before but after seeing it here I'm super interested in it. It heavily reminds me of Machinarium with the whole dying rusty city look and I absolutely love it. Definitely going to check it out
I remember when fnaf first came out, it was this quiet, mysterious game. You're just placed right in the middle of things with no clue of the what or why. The ambience is perfect, the visuals and sounds echoing from somewhere down the hall make the building feel like some sort of monster you're inside. I loved the first year of fnaf way more than anything that came out after, because like most things, I don't think it needed to be expanded or elaborated on, etc. The vague mystery and lore elements were awsome. fnaf 2 and 3 did a great job of keeping that theme while making the story bigger n better. I liked it best when fnaf was a small story where we only learned about its characters through cryptic minigames and subtle implications, without putting voices or faces to most of them.
Now we have immortal 80s tech genius murderer lich that for some reason keeps coming back. And the books...Dear god the books...

@@darreldarrenman3334 I'm not necessarily calling books bad a an artistic pieces, but I think certain lore and plot points they introduced should've never existed. From the top of my mind: apparently rebuilding your dead children as robots with all their memories intact is a thing, "animatronics" that are made specifically to hunt and murder children also a thing, William "I'm Springtrap!" Afton is a weird take on the main antagonist of the series, solidifying him as immortal lich (Scraptrap makes even less sense, apparently being just a robot made to look decrepit and decayed on purpose and with a piece of Afton's soul), magical illusion chips, even more bs with remnant and how it works. The book series (and later fnaf entries it influenced) for some reason really likes going into convoluted borderline nonsensical lore, straight up magic and teen drama. I cannot comprehend how we went from "normal" child murderers in relatively grounded pizzeria to murder robots with hyper advanced AI, chips that manipulate people's senses, magical soul juice that makes you immortal and fnaf games being just games in-universe for the sake of another Afton's return.

yep, this is exactly how i feel about the fnaf series. Fnaf 1, 2, and (i guess) 3 were the only ones that felt good to me. The rest feel like they're trying too hard and leaning into a serious and convoluted story instead of using the fear of the unknown with vague details to scare the player.
And I will just add that I've always loved that fact that when Scott realized his animation style was creepy and off-putting to folks (mostly just because of what the limits of the technology were at the time), he leaned INTO it, instead of throwing in the towel. He not only found his audience because of this, he created an entire niche in the process. His success inspires me way more than someone like Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos.
Musk is to lie and say you can do anything enough times until people believe it.
Bezos is to be abusive and cut throats until you reach the top.
Kind of except Scott truly built his success from the ground up. Both Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk come from wealthy families and had it easier from the get go. Scott was making the first game while working at Dollar General.

Scott may not have that much in terms of overt christian messages in his games, but he is a Christian, and he is making games. That's gotta count for something.

Every word in this script, every detail, down to the editing is very well put together. This is one of my favorite retrospectives on fnaf simply because your interest and passion for the franchise is audible and visible through the editing/script. The background music, introspective thoughts, and expertly placed clips made this a great watch.
I appreciate that greatly, I was obsessed with the game for years and wanted to get all of that out in one video

While it exists in very few countries. I thought only in the US but Wikipedia lists "The Middle East" and India as well.

I came here expecting to see a video dunking on security breach, and praising the old games, but instead I found a great documentary that is most honestly, probably one of the best videos I've seen on this platform.
I was one of those that tuned out after FNAF4, because the following games didn't have the same atmosphere of dread and cryptic-ness that I originally loved. But after watching this video I want to give those games a try now. They may not be as scary and miserable as the originals, but they do show a boost in confidence and authenticity from Scott, which is very inspirational. I'll also be checking out The Desolate Hope, it looks amazing just from the art style alone.

I actually tuned out after sister location. It wasnt exactly a lack of interest but I just kinda *stopped keeping up with it.* I guess the lore got too confusing for me or something.
I recently caught up with the series and im kinda sad I didnt keep going with it. But its not like I missed out on too much, it feels like recently fnaf has been getting a second wind of sorts, so ill ride this second wave as long as it goes on for.

Same here, I literally only ever played the first night of the first game when it came out, as I was way too terrified of horror games to play them myself, and although I am not the biggest fan of the direction the series has headed recently, I still always find myself coming back to videos like these, fnaf will always somehow hold its own special place of interest in my brain.
This was a really nice video. I really enjoy retrospectives like this and such a positive takeaway from the series and what it represents helps make me feel more satisfied with having spent nearly a decade with it. Great job!

I appreciate that you instead chose to analyse Scott's works from a place of love towards his work. I don't know if you dislike or not the last two games, but thanks for not being outright negative about them. Awesome video!
I found Help Wanted really fun to play and I can appreciate what was attempted in the story, and FNAF World wasn't something I hated, and mostly found interesting. As I said in the video, I'm a weird guy so that game was appealing to me. I think Security Breach was pretty badly made, but it still worked as a sort of ideological endpoint to the progression of the series. But yeah, I didn't wanna be focused too much on the negatives.

This is honestly beautiful. This video is like the master of all FNAF retrospective videos. You're not even trying to tell just the story. You're telling Scott Cawthon's story. Even then, the way you tell the story is the best I've ever heard anyone tell it. Many people have trouble explaining the lore, but when you think about 1-VR being games within the main universe, it's so much better.
(Keeping in mind that most things in the original games actually happened)
Thanks to you, I've come to appreciate Security Breach not because it's a good game (which I think it's not), but because it exists. Security Breach, so long as you ignore the details, is the best way to make a meta game. Taking place in the future, being the only game so far to actually take place in the correct universe!
One argument my older brother and I had for why it made no sense was how Fazbear Entertainment was no longer a corporate entity at the end of Pizzeria Simulator's true ending, but then they're filthy rich in VR and Security Breach. Now I know what to correctly rule out as canon in the games within the games, as I suppose that detail never truly happened.

The explanations you laid out, while they make sense, don't contribute to a greater story. They're excuses for plot holes. I'm glad that people are justifying the terrible storytelling of Security Breach and are finding enjoyment in it, but the series was far more unique and interesting when details connected to one another and was built up over time.
@@Stormister I appreciate your perspective, but I can see this as a new arc for FNAF. If the games continue, which I argue they will, it can only progress from here. Sure, it's weird and meta, but honestly, I kind of see this as world building. I hate Security Breach and its messy-ass story. But the one thing I like is what it TRIED to do. I still remember what I imagined the game would be like. Of course, it was a lot more kid-friendly, which is just nonsense.
Fun fact about security breach. If you look up the dev interviews and their responces on how the game was developed? it explains a LOT. The biggest of which being, that THEY didn't know what the hell was going on in the story, cause Scott didn't acutally tell them what the plot even WAS. Just what to put into the game, without explaining it. Cause that's just how he does FNAF games. Obivously that works ok when he's doing them solo and on smaller scale games. But he was working to make a big, open world, exploration game and with a studio. And that lead to so many problems the game wound up having. Relying on vaugeness and hints to tell your story can be a huge problem.
And Security Breach proved that. Espically given how the game was gutted from it's original much darker and bloodier premise due to Scott's well...Everything.
And Sadly, most indie horror games saw this and thought 'Oh hey we can do that to and get the same results!' ANd thus we got hello Neighbor and others.

To be honest I feel like the story of Scott’s career as a game developer is one of the craziest he when from making indie game’s that not that many people played to having his games on the play station state of play next to very popular games it’s crazy how Scott when from that to where he is now the evolution of his games is also kinds inspirational man fnaf made most of my childhood and I still love it I’ve loved fnaf since fnaf 4 and all these years later I still do

I got into FNAF back in 2014 when I was 24, and now I'm 32. This game series was the reason I found Markiplier, and Security Breach has inspired me to not only make OCs, but to write fan fics again. Sister Location and Security Breach are my favorites in the series, but this video was well made, and thinking about how it's been 8 years now makes me wanna cry

You sir, are the very first youtuber I've seen who hasn't grown up in the 90's. Every single youtuber I've come across over the years had always talked about how they remember things from the 90's or the 80's and how they were around during that time, but i'm just glad to finally see a youtuber who hasn't lived through that time for a change, because I also grew up in the 2000's.

This is probably my favorite FNAF retrospective. It's not a highly in-depth or critical look at the games, but it looks at all of the titles and what they mean as stand-alone games, as parts of a whole franchise, and as products of and to their author. The video feels nostalgic (even to someone like me who has only watched this franchise from the sidelines) and is a great reminder of everything FNAF is about.
Amazing video! I absolutely love all the thought and soul put into it. FNAF was and still is a huge part of many people's childhoods, and seeing how Scott went from a struggling game developer to one of the most famous game developers currently to date is honestly fantastic

That was also the sort of issue I had with a lot of people's views of FNAF. I saw it as a series that was always sort of drifting that direction, and wanted to show how each game contributed to it. I still also believe that FNAF World didn't get a fair shake, but that's unrelated.
@@TheCursedJudge yeah honestly seems like the disasterous launch entirely derailed any plans for the future, creepy teasers after fnaf world made people worried thinking Scott was mentally unstable at the reception then the next update was just Halloween updates poking fun at the game itself.

watching the intro made me realize how sad it is that in Scott Cawthon's final game, he didn't include Bonnie (as an actual character), who showed so much prominence in the trailer and was a big inspiration to making the series, even so getting a whole game centralized around a version of him (Springtrap in fnaf3)

Dude I watched this in one sitting and forgot time existed. I really like how you presented everything! Your focus on Scott' is something I've seen no one talk about in-depth in other videos, there is so much more humanity in your take and I really enjoy that.
Scott is an incredible person who has improved my life tenfold with his games, but I think that I'm one of the only people who is so glad that he retired. He's mentioned so many times in the games that he was tired of making them, especially during the pizzasim/fnafworld era, and he really, really deserves the break.

2:59 I remember Pimp My Dungeon, it was one of Scott’s older mobile games. It was a tower defense where you’d place monsters in your dungeon to stop knights.
I actually played a good amount of his old games before he even made FNAF (my favorites being 8-Bit RPG Creator, Pimp My Dungeon, and Chipper and Son’s)
I always thought that Scott's way of animating shit in such an old fashion is cool as hell. Truly an unexplored visual style IMO.
I'd say that it was FNAF that pioneered in nostalgia based horror. Before that and there were just bad online horror stories, creepypastas, that struggled to have any weight tied to it. The atmosphere and environment of the games is what made people remember and tap back into our deepest vague memories. Hence things like vaporwave music, analog/digital horror, found footage and liminal spaces. Visualizations and sounds that can somehow make us feel like something similar happened to us in this universe.
Those finishing lines before the end screen made me so emotional- great video!
This is the best analysis of the FNAF series I have ever seen. This video has more passion in it then other modern FNAF videos and you captured so many feelings that I felt in 2014.
The way you spoke and delivered your thoughts made this 30 minute video feel like 10. It captivated me the entire way through. Your cadence and delivery reminds me of Dunkey! A lot more serious thought lol (which I thoroughly enjoy)

I get recommended a lot of videos about security breach and a lot of them are extremely negative, so when I saw this video recommended I almost didn't click on it. I'm really glad I did though, this was really well put together. I had never even considered the storyteller angle, it makes a lot of sense that's the way he took the series. I sincerely hope he's happy with his work, because I know I am! I love the world he's built (and I've never played a single fnaf game myself. Too much of a chicken for scary games. Really wanna try Security Breach though.)

As a developer Scott has made some great leaps, but he has most certainly lost some morale ground in how he has handled the merchandising afterwards.
I like how people say "FNAF SB is repetitive and boring" like, HAVE YOU PLAYED ANY FNAF GAME, I personally loved SB, especially the environment and sound design, but I guess that's just my opinion.
I literally agree with you! I’m glad to see someone else not slandering on SB for once, while it did miss potential, it was still pretty good in the end and extremely unique compared to the older games. I never had that much fun playing a FNaF game until SB. I mean, even with the glitches, each playthrough I have is a different experience unlike the old games. Whether it be a glitch, or something I didn’t find in the open world before. I’m one of the very few old fans who actually enjoyed SB and don’t find any opportunity to shit on it. Even though I’m still upset that the trailers showed something different and did nothing with Vanny.

Security Breach does have by far, the best soundtrack of all FNaF games, don’t @ me. It also has amazing designs, the PizzaPlex is realistic to how kid friendly it’s SUPPOSED TO BE. People complain that the animatronics are not scary but keep in mind they’re in a kids establishment in the future AND Fazbear Entertainment is trying to cover up their spooky past. Why make scary robots? The story consistency would be crap if they’re the same. And honestly? The shattered animatronics are pretty scary ngl.
@@MrFazzy-xx3dw the thing is, a NEVER get scared in horror games, I wish I did but I'm just fearless! I've never been scared in FNAF games which is why I didn't care about the scary factor since they never scared me anyway. And the environment of SB is amazing, and yeah, definitely best soundtrack.
@@lostaudio Honeslty, people over exaggerate the “horror” of FNaF. It’s honestly not scary, not even the OG games. People act like it’s the most terrifying thing on earth but really it’s tame. It was very scary in 2014, but now, it’s just faded into feeling nothing. Horror is subjective, but I can’t see how FNaF can be scary nowadays.
Anyways, fellow SB enjoyer, I love to see another person that thinks the same as me! Because everytime I share my opinion on SB, I get obliterated. I got blocked and my comment was deleted before (not on yt) by an old fan who can’t handle my civil positive opinion on SB. The desolate hope is genuinely my fav Scott game. Idk something about the melancholic atmosphere if you essentially being the janitor to these giant machines just scratches so many itches for me
I remember when they hung people from the ceiling, put dead kids into robots, and crushed a murderer to death. Now this is what FNaF has turned to lol. Sad.

@@Hathumie Well it still had concepts of kids being kidnapped and presumably being murdered, Burntrap who is literally a burnt corpse, a person in a rabbit suit being brutally ripped apart by staff bots, and of course being hunted down by killer animatronics. SB isn't scary on it's own, but conceptually it can be quite dark, and quite gory.
like most of the fandom, i grew up with fnaf, but after the 3rd game, there was a gap in my life where i actively avoided it, only facing the series again when the vr game dropped in 2020. that sister location segment encapsulates so much of how i feel when i first came across it - these characters, some i grew up with and some that were new, they had like. voices. and an actual STORY to tell. it was fuckin awesome. i think it works so goddamn well. fnaf 2 will always get nostalgia points for me but i fell in love with SL and pizza sim for really "pushing the narrative" as it were
the way you described this game is exactly the reason why i fell in love with it years ago. i think it was the first fandom i ever got into (either that or undertale). i was there as the fnaf 4 teasers dropped one by one. i remember hopping onto the family computer everyday to see the slow reveal of fnaf world. i remember watching all of the comic dubs and animations on youtube and letting fnaf fill my search history. i even remember using makeup to try and cosplay the puppet as a kid!- which was extremely difficult to take off.
it was such a simpler time. a happier time, really. although the story is absolutely messy, and vagueness is driving everyone, even those not into theories insane - i grew up with this franchise. and i think i’ll always come back to it, no matter how tired i get with everything.

A great video that changed my perspective of the series as a whole. It’s kind of hard to choose a favorite game cause they’re all amazing. I used to dislike security breach a lot but your words gave me a new understanding of the meaning. There’s still a few problems with the game and design but I can look past that at the end of the day. Fnaf is a gem and there won’t be others like it ever

fun fact when i was 5 my church pastors wife made us watch the pilgrims progress by scott cawthon and i looked for years later if i could find it because i remember it being janky but kinda cool, then i like all 12 year olds became obsessed with fnaf and watched a documentary on it and realized the same guy that made the game my parents didn’t want me to play was the same guy that made that series we were forced to watch 😂
I gotta say I love the aesthetic of The Desolate Hope, it’s of course not a generally appealing art direction, but it gives off a unique atmosphere I could only find in past decades, like how different CGI was when it was very limited. The creativity in the renders and overall feeling is very different, and it is evident that Scott placed a lot of passion in it
I’m glad how this video interprets how Scott made this all come together and how he’s such an amazing creator

This is a great video! I wanted to say that I heard a theory of sorts recently that, despite its name, FNAF4 is actually the first game in what you deemed the “sister series.” Its characters are essentially unrelated to the ones from 1-3, and the house from 4 appears rather prominently in SL and its lore. I just think it’s an interesting, different way to look at the FNAF series, and it goes hand-in-hand with your assessment that 4 marks the series shift to narrative horror.
Your reading... God damn it, you did it. I already loved FNaF before. I already had an enormous admiration for Scott before. Yet you did it. You made me love them even more. You made me almost cry with the emotion of the series, carrying on. FNaF was present for half of my life. And I personally consider it the guide that lead me to love horror as a genre, and Storytelling as a hobby.
