It IS a bit more experimental, but leaves it feeling much different, sort of like a raw experience of you demonstrating the hard truth when it comes to forgotten media.
Also, it was a genuine shock when you said that popular vid of yours got multi-million views. I was also a viewer scooped up by the algorithm, but that was around the 200k+ mark, had to do a double take from how much it blew up!
The concept of playing an old, forgotten game and it just being a conversation between you and the ghost of the developer's passion really hits. They are the experiences that you can't share since others simply won't understand nor care. Playing something purely for your own sake is the most profound and genuine you can be yet isolating from everyone else
I love that feeling ! I played a game named Rooms, and at some point, when you go back to the start, you can choose to walking inside a very, very long corridor. Afetr a while, the dev starts talking to you through a serie of text written on the screen. I felt some kind of connection with this guy, and I liked it, and I hope more devs do that.
I read a lot of second hand, obscure books. There's an odd feeling that comes with reading a book with a happy birthday message from the 1930s in the front. The knowledge that there is virtually no one else who has even heard of the book before. It's like walking through a ghost town

i think its partially the reason i love being an introvert so much and sticking to myself and my own thoughts. it may sound a bit unhinged or crazy but stuff like gaming alone or talking to myself actually helps out far more than doing anything with other people. when im talking to myself, i can more often than not, keep track of everything i need to recall understand and plan out as well as keep a conversation going in my head or out aloud so im not feeling alone even tho ik i am but to someone that understands what im on about as well as giving me viewpoints and being the opposing side to even my own arguements at times to come to the conclusion of the best outcome or option or result. people say its delusional or unhealthy and psycotic but imo its healthy. its true that people cant deal without talking or a conversation or never being around someone as their emotions will eventually crack and spiral out of control. ive been there once. talking to ur self is a healthy trait to have. it keeps ur mind open, u have someone to talk to, who will go against ur own points, making u keep an open mind will help get things done and keep track of stuff ur thinking about or caring about. not only is it scientifically proven that it is a healthy trait to have but it also shows ur genuine side at times. u put up a front with people and often get conflicted on the most simple of things but with ur self, u can keep ur head in the right direction as long as u can maintain control of ur own mind.
ik for a fact when people have seen me talk out aloud or i see other people talk out aloud to them selves, its because they tend to open up more without knowing it and show parts of them self people tend to judge u about. the fact of the matter is, its most likely ur most helpful tool to use to get things done even if people are around u.
Perfect Dark, or any other non-infamous N64 game gives me that feeling.
the hardest part of getting over it for me wasn't even reaching 100% completion, scaling the mountain 50 times. it was convincing my friends that it was a worthwhile experience. they simply couldn't belive that it had any actual value
I know what you mean. I feel like a lot of times most people find it hard to understand why personal achievements are impactful. Setting a goal, and accomplishment of a goal. Even if it's something as "stupid" as beating a videogame. It is discipline, hard work, and results from effort and doing what you should, even when you don't want to. Like working out, and doing chores.
Discipline is something most people lack.
I considered it a bit of a comfort game
Yeah, my friend convinced me to try the game. I hated it, never had fun, didn't get a single ounce of joy out of it apart from knowing that I made my first full refund on Steam and now know how to do that. I also fundamentally disagree with Bennet on game design and approach. I find extremely little value in "artificially hard for the sake of feeling achievement", because it's fake difficulty for fake achievement. Yes, the achievement is good in the moment, maybe, but take it from a guy who has seen several "Achievement Hunters" regret spending "so much time on useless shit when I could have been playing _________". It comes back at you in a decade.
Same thing for ridiculous self-imposed challenges on games like "I'm going to go through Fallout: New Vegas without taking ANY damage!", there is a reason why 99% of players don't go for these even though "It's hard you'll get a sense of achievement". It has no value to them.
Sometimes you can look at something, clearly go "That isn't for me" and move on. It's why I don't care if people check out my streams or channel, I know people do the same thing I do to others. BFGOI was a great teacher of "Yeah, sometimes ignore the friend that insists the game is 'hard but worth it'. It ain't."
I think that hiking simulator rage games in general are masterpieces. Getting Over It, Jump King, and Pogostuck are some of the most memorable gaming experiences for me. There is something magical about finally completing some incredibly hard Jump King custom map that you spent grinding 30+ hours on. I just think that people are easily scared away from something that will take a lot of effort to beat, which is actually a topic brought up by Bennett Foddy in GOI as well.
True. My first completion took about 20 hours, but the second one was done the same day the first was for about 20 minutes, and even 2 or 3 years since then, after completing this game for about 60 times I am still fascinated by it's idea and memories of pain and suffering that it took in the past. So harsh yet so sweet feeling doesn't let me forget this game, and I think it won't in the near future. In some way it is relaxing space, wheres nothing going on now, but in the past it was a lot.

When he said "do you like this video?" I got chills down my spine. This is one of the first famous youtubers I've found that genuinely seem to mainly care about the audience rather than themselves.
Thank you for everything, and it's really hard to say - but the only other video I've seen of yours was "Games you can never play again.", because that's what youtube recommended to me and I mindlessly watched it, enjoyed it, and moved on with my life. But now you've made me become self aware of my actions as a viewer. I liked, subbed, and commented on this video just to show you the love of yet another new fan. Keep up the good work - If you feel like it.
I liked the video. I'm pretty sure this question was put to question whether this is the sole criteria to value this video, whether or how much it's likeable. Like whether you play a game again and again because it's enjoyable. Or whether you trek through beautiful, uncaring wilderness because it's fun.

The part about the ghost of an abandoned game… I never felt like my experience had a sentence until now. There’s a feeling of loneliness when playing an old game, one forgotten, it’s not nostalgia, it’s because you ARE alone.
Having recently downloaded a few emulators i definitely feel that. Something interesting about booting up an old game you know NOONE else is likely to be playing at the same time as you. Theres games with followings that people definitely play like NBA Street V2, or Star Wars Battlefront II, Old Pokemon games, GTA SA, etc. But booting up Mercenaries, gb color Mario Tennis, Syphon Filter, knowing youre probably the only person in that moment playing it, feels weirdly isolating, and at the same time satisfying. Feels like every time i boot up something like that, im reviving that world for a brief moment in time, and who knows when the next time its gonna be opened back up by someone else is gonna be?
Beginner’s Guide is a top forgotten game in this regard, made by the creator of The Stanley Parable and being simply a conversation between you and the creator about how good art doesn’t necessarily equal a “tragic and damaged” artist all the time. It’s so beautiful and deserves everyone’s time
That game made me cry when I watched Jacksepticeye's playthrough several years ago. It's nice to see other people remember it!

I'm a game developer, and I have quite a few game developer friends. It's wild how often their games often move me or inspire me in ways you just can't get anywhere else. But they're all rough around the edges in ways I don't expect to really take off the way something like a Pizza Tower would. It's hard to even recommend these types of games to other people, but they still mean a lot to me.
I second recommending The Beginner's Guide. It sounds like it really would resonate with you.

games dont always have to fully work to be good or look stunning or gain traction to be a good game. hell, theres games in the past ive kept coming back to from like 2009 or 2008 that barely anyone knows or even remembers. its in the comment ive put around this comment section somewhere. thing is tho, if people can sense u have a good heart, ur trying ur best or u have passion for ur game or doing what u love. u tend to get one of the best groups of people who aknowledge u and ur work even if it is admittedly not that great. but its fine to have that opinion and have an open mind on what u can try to do later on to fix any problems u may cross along the way.
put it this way. i dont really like chess. not really appealing to me and not really a good board game to play. but i still like it so much at the same time because its something ive been looking for in games for a while now. people who use skill and intelligence to compete in a game against each other. rarely can people play cheap to win. ive always bottled up the fact that in games over the years moreso the modern games have a toxic lazy player base where people will cheat and cheap out every chance they get when they are losing just to win then act like they are good at something they clearly arnt. it annoys me because the point of trying to work to get where u can truely achieve is just lost in gaming. people dont grind anymore, people will throw money out to skip like half the game or get better stuff far more easily and people will always chicken out and opt out when they cant compete in any way they can.
but with chess its a different story, its not something u can cheese or exactly jump ahead to skip the fun of the game or the importance of the game and how to actually play it. with chess, it takes intelligence skill and the ability to outsmart ur opponents to win and thats what i love the most. i dont have to like the game its self, the game isnt exactly fun per say but the passion people have in that simple board game to work for their win and work to take out each crucial piece on the board is what makes it wholesome and just so good to play. same in your position. even if people dislike the game and dont really play it often. the fact it exsists out there for people to try out, the fact u can have some mechanics in the game that could easily draw people in to play or try out the game even if its not something they will actively play is what makes it so lively and good for those who play it.

I actually found getting over it quite relaxing, it's probably because my regular life is suffering, so two painful things even each other out and make it peaceful somehow.
The game is hard, but Bennet takes the approach of gently encouraging the player rather than the usual rage game approach. I think it helps with staying calm and helps with the themes a lot.
i also really enjoy getting over it, i think the movement is amazing and its a good challenge
People who have suffered find comfort in the smaller things like this. When a more harsh reality isn't comparable to the experience provided, it allows a bit of comfort. I'm not sure if this is exactly accurate, more so an opinion on the topic.

I lost my mother recently and i think you are describing some feelings that are very close to grief. Playing an old or niche game that maybe the community has moved on from and having nobody to talk to about it hits close to home.
This video is a such a great way to explain a really confusing part of any creative process. Sometimes i feel like whenever I make either videos or music, I have to look at it through the audience’s lense. There are times I feel like I’ve lost myself in trying to bridge the gap to the viewer, and I’m always asking if my authenticity alone is enough to make something enjoyable. Amazing video and although I know almost all artists go through this, it still really eased my mind hearing you explain it concisely with such great depth. I really enjoyed the video!

thing is that people need to realise is theres always going to be people who are with u or against u. like something u made and dont like something u made. it happens. if u can come to the acceptance of that, push forward and continue doing what u love within good reason, it doesnt matter in the end. ur doing what u love and the feedback u get helps u improve. good and bad. i for instance dont like rap music, at least modern rap. but i can still listen to it from time to time. sometimes the beat is good or the rythm, maybe i like whos singing or rapping in it it could be any numerous reasons. even if i were to say to u as feedback to say try to use less auto tune for example, or dont make the pitch of the songs so high, its feedback that can help u improve. the next time u use a song that uses higher pitch music, u use that feedback and tune it down a bit. u never know, it could gain more of an audience that way. the person that said it wasnt that great may come back and now support u for that new music video u put out. u just got to realise that some people when it comes to music, even if they arnt fond of the song, they may return and listen to other music videos u have up or any that u post later on and actually enjoy what u post. its not that they dont like u specifically or are tryna put u down for no reason, people just have their own personal viewpoints. even if they dont return. it doesnt matter because u have people that do enjoy what u put out there still.

you have a way of connecting with your audience that almost no one has. I appreciate your work and the way you present it, it’s unique, it’s refreshing.
I really do love the awareness in that line about how video game videos on youtube can be a gateway to talk about more indept and fascinating stuff.
I mainly watch video game stuff on UA-cam, yet as much as I've learned about games and others opinions from them, I've also learned about peoples life stories on how they made a game and how inspirational it is, themes about stuff I can barely grasp but love to hear about due to how it Grabs me and makes me think about stuff and the world in ways I couldn't expect from clicking on a video about why a game is good.
What I saying is, is that I'm happy someone finally found the words for when I get deeply invested in an irl development story about a game I like I wouldn't usually watch,
or when I've watched a deep and thought provoking video all about hotline miami, or yakuza, far cry, or Tony hawk for the ds (ok not that one but)

As someone who’s been struggling to write a story I’ve been thinking about and building for years, the beginning of this video really hit me.
Every time I start typing words out, I’m not really having fun. The process itself started feeling like work. Even worse, I’m seeing all the imperfections of my story all exposed. Writing the story for others to see makes it, and essentially me, vulnerable.
I had to ask myself why I was so dead set on writing this story. I was having so much more fun thinking and building it in my head. And somewhere, I realized that I had the (misguided) thought that for something to have value, it must be perceived/used by others. And in the process of writing it out, it was no longer my story, but a story meant for others to consume.
So hearing that you “made that choice,” has kind of…grounded me in a way. That there is things you can create that won’t necessarily be “good” for everyone, but are good for you. And if you’re not trying to make something bigger out of it, that’s enough.
It's so relatable, I just started writing stories online for fun and I enjoyed them, but after few chapters, the ideas in my head, the world that I built using my imagination, I couldn't write that down, because I was trying to write it through other's perspective and eventually lost interest, I still try to get back and write but every time, it just doesn't feel as fun as it used to
This is something I've struggled with as well. At some point you make a choice for whether it's for your enjoyment, or to make it more accessible for others to enjoy. Whether conscious or not. Having that realization is powerful.
Hopefully it becomes something you enjoy doing again, whether for yourself or for other people. And if it becomes a finished piece, whether edited or just a first draft, even better. I wish you the best of luck on writing your story.
The reason why i wanna write my Story is cause otherwise i'll only have weird clips that are disconnected. :P
Something I told myself when I wrote my first novel length story was that I was only doing so for myself. I had an idea, a story, characters, that I needed to get out. It doesn't matter if anyone else reads it, what matters is that I wrote it.
I'm still going to work on that written story someday, to make this rough and personal thing into a novel clean enough to show to others. But that goal is secondary, and I've already succeeded at what I really wanted. Write for yourself, edit for others.
I've felt that way as well. Over the years, I've had several stories that I had fun building in my head. I'd make up character interactions, scenes, settings, etc. But as soon as I try to write any of it down, I can't. It feels like as soon as I do, it's out there for the world to see and judge.
I don't aspire to become a best-selling author or even to get published. I want to be able to write for myself, and not others.
These comments and this video really hit home for me. Maybe I'll finally be able to just sit down and write, not for others, but for myself. I wish you and everyone else good luck with their writing!

I found your channel from the “Games we can never play again” video, which I had to send to my friend after seeing how profound the message behind it was. After watching this video I’m humbled to be able to find such an amazing channel with a creator so passionate and dedicated to their craft. I think I speak for everyone who stuck around to the end of the video, this mountain that you design over the hopefully long years of this channel would be an honour to climb with you.
I started watching videos off your channel a few days ago because I like video games, but the more I watch your videos the more I notice and appreciate how you interject your philosophy and your thoughts. I love it for 3 reasons -
1. It’s so nice having someone to relate to. I have a lot of thoughts and a lot of ideas about the world, a weak way for me to understand it and to understand myself. Didn’t really make my life any better and I’d say it made it worse, but what was super shitty is feeling alone. I can’t connect these thoughts with my friends or my family or teachers or my therapist or anyone like that. People may understand, but they don’t feel the same way. So a lot of the time it feels like the bane of my existence is just a huge secret. The people who do say what I think are the famous artists or writers or philosophers which forces some kind of ‘intellect’ superiority on these thoughts and makes them a lot less down to earth than I would’ve liked. So having someone like you who has these thoughts but presents them through something down to earth like video games, it makes me feel heard and more normal. It’s nice to have someone to relate to and so I thank you a million times for doing this
2. I love how video games are being used to portray these concepts. This video probably isn’t the best example because no game intends to be forgotten, but it’s stupid to think that all art is intensional. There’s an artist called Naum Gabo that works with negative space which means the subject of his sculptures isn’t what he had physically made but rather the gaps of empty space between them. The whole idea of the subject of art being in something other than what the artist has tangibly made allows art to be portrayed in so many more things - e.g., the reaction of the viewer (in this case, the player). If these forgotten games themselves were the subject of the art then maybe they wouldn’t be much, but the context of playing these games knowing that you are probably one of the only people who remember it and are enjoying it completely reinvents the game and therefore the subject is in your reaction and the circumstances that have made you react to the game this way. It makes me so happy that video games, again this not being the best example since being forgotten was not intentional, are being treated like any other art medium now - whether it be intentional or through ‘negative space’
3. I love how connected we as a viewer feel to you as a creator. I truly don’t think I’ve ever watched a UA-cam video and felt it was more a conversation than a video. This is only from the viewers perspective, of course, since us viewers are watching with all of us but you as a creator are only putting forward what would appeal to the viewers (like you said yourself) so I’m not gonna say there is an inherent connection between us subscribers and you, but I will say that you create a really comforting environment. Almost like being exposed but safe. Like a conversation haha
I'm happy to see you connect so much with my stuff, and it's kinda nice to see someone understand exactly what I'm trying to go for. I hope to keep it up for you in the future.

Dang this is a very surreal video, but not in a pretentious way. It's just genuine thoughts on art and artists. I dig it.
you're the first one in a while to make me feel seen and heard and made me reflect on many different topics that maybe i wouldn't have thought about ever. tearing up over a video that isn't even supposed to be emotional feels okay or even nice when it's your content. you really have a way with words, and your voice and the background footage really tie the experience that is your channel all together. please keep it up ^^
more videos about getting over it need to be made, after playing the game for 35 hours and getting all the achievements, i think it is one of the best games on the world, hearing the dialogue feels like a talk with someone close, sometimes i think it really is.

Reminds me of when i'd repeatedly play sekiro, i know that game isn't dead, but i already beat it, i re-bought it on my pc PURELY for the purpose of doing everything again and thats what i did, evernight, gathering myself at my pc to play sekiro and listen to music, cuz it was the only thing that made me feel not alone when i completely was alone, i had no friends, no significant other, i had nothing but me, this game and the music
It was strange cuz i always felt like i had friends back then, something that was looking forward to seeing me every day, sometimes it was devil may cry, or dishonored, these games were all i got, and there i was trying to get REALLY good at them and pull off super sick stunts and clips, yet i wasn't recording at all, these feats of skill lost to time, and even memory, i barely remember half the shit i did, but i sat there talking to myself and doing those things for myself, as if someone was there, when nobody was

Y'know, I've never been much a gamer. But I always find myself returning to the gaming world even still.
I do abstract painting in my spare time, and these concepts from these videos always inspire me with a comfort or utter dread that I can translate into something for myself, a personal experience on canvas created by the fibers of my brush. Even if one day this video is forgotten, even if this genre dies, the ideas and style will live even if it's just through personal experiences such as the ones I partake in.

It's fitting you show Jacob Geller's video as an example, he became one of my absolute favorite youtubers at around the same stage of his channel as you are now for many of the same reasons you're becoming one of my favorite recent finds. It's true that maybe the videos that blow up don't always have anything specific that makes them more deserving of it than any other video but them blowing up is the culmination of all the hard work you've been putting in into all of your videos and the audience you've been building over time. And while some people might just watch that one video and remember you only for it, me and I'm sure many others have now watched a lot more of your videos now and are very excited to see where this channel grows!

it's tricky. frequently the things that are fun to make are not things that are fun to play or see. it can be incredibly demoralizing to spend days, weeks, months of your life working on something while constantly dealing with the nagging feeling that no one will care about it. especially with the way "content" works on the internet. the people you're interacting with don't see, can never truly see, the effort you put in. they don't know how much youve learned and grown. the improvements youve made to your craft exist only in the final product and are devoid of the context that makes them feel like an accomplishment to begin with.
it's important to remind yourself that those accomplishments, though unseen, are real. they matter!
im still a student. i dont know if ill ever make anything that's remembered as more than a mention in a list in the footnotes of a video. but, when i look back at what i was making as a teen, or even things i worked on just last year, i remember what i was thinking as i worked - what i wanted, what i feared, how i suffered - and i see how much further ive come since then and i feel proud. not of the quality or artistry of my work itself, but of the effort i put in, and the growth i experienced as a result. i hope that you and anyone reading this experience that as well.

Most of the creators or videos on this platform I watch for reasons like wanting to get a good laugh or to just pass time or even occasionally for entertainment but this channel is different it’s definitely entertaining but in a different way. The way these videos are made just makes them so entertaining to watch and listen to and they are thought provoking in some ways i I love that I hope this channel finds more success because it deserves it for being one of the more unique channels I know and I really hope one day this guy owns a gold or even diamond play button

I've never forgotten getting over it. It might've been the first game I beat before other youtubers did. I have beat it 150+ times since November 2017, I have no idea why this game was such a part of my life, but I really love it.
I am not the type of person to leave comments on videos, but this is possibly one of the most meaningful videos I have watched. It speaks volumes to me how these pieces of content, whether it be games or videos or otherwise, can be so revolutionary for a person, or a group or whole generation of content going forward, and yet the ones who have spawned that wave for one or more people may lay in obscurity for the rest, and maybe even those who have encountered it before. It’s amazing to realize how much we’ll never know to exist in the first place, and how much will lay dormant in our heads for years to come. Man I love long form content. With the world becoming more obsessed with shorter videos, long videos have become pretty much a guarantee for good content. For a scripted video to be this long, it means that the person creating it is passionate about the subject matter and is willing to sink many hours into one video. Many people seem to find long videos boring and not engaging so maybe I'm an outlier but I love to just sit down with a video for 15 minutes or hours and relax. This has almost nothing to do with the content of the video but I just felt like I needed to say.
I love these kinds of videos. UA-camrs like you and Jacob Geller giving a new perspective on video games and other topics as a whole will always be so fascinating to me.

This is why videogame preservation is so important. Millions of hours, dollars, & hundreds of employees, to just a group of friends with a month or two to work on a game, either way it's a form of art & a show of dedication. No matter how awful, how treacherous, how unfair, how cheap, how expensive, or how forgiving it is, we should be able to remember it & experience it for years to come. They say a person truly dies 3 times:
-When you physically die, your soul leaves you body.
-When someone says your name for the very last time.
-When the last memory of what you looked like is scrubbed off the Earth, leaving you truly forgotten.
In a sense, videogames go through this:
-Eventually, the game is no longer sold / manufactured, left to rot on older hardware.
-One day, unless that game was popular or re-released, someone will mention it one last time.
-At some point, any pictures, files, or gameplay of that game will be lost & forgotten.
It's unfortunate when this happens, & that's why every videogame deserves preservation. At any point, that game could be delisted, unavailable by official means for the rest of time, & without preservation, left to it's rotting cartridge shell. One final point, there are some retro consoles, like for example, the Commodore 64, which had thousands of games, without labels & just on floppy disks. Many of these completely lost to time. Hell, even real games from big franchises are completely lost to time, like Sonic At The Olympic Winter Games (2012) which was an iPhone app that lasted around a week, before disappearing from the store & to this day barely anything is known about it except a couple of screenshots. Sega Swirl 2 is a lost PC game that was only on a short-lived online site from 2005-2015, possibly delisted before that, & today barely anyone knows it ever even existed.
Good well-written point there, it reminds me of how for example the original System Shock game was in a limbo for a very long time because the copyrights were (supposedly) split between Electronic Arts and an insurance company due to contractual shenanigans Looking Glass had had to do to secure funding, and neither side cared about the franchise all that much but also at the same time the rights were suddenly (very) valuable to them if anyone wanted to buy them (plus allegedly Electronic Arts felt it was literally not worth their legal department's time to draft a sales contract if they couldn't get enough money out of it). So the issue is that these corporations amass copyrights simply because they're often publishers and/or funders in gaming projects and insist on it, but at the same time since it doesn't really cost them anything to *keep* them and they feel they can't just "give them away" they can just sit on them forever without using them if they feel like it.
One ingenious solution to this I've seen, although I guess it is not generally allowed since I've not seen it happen much, was what happened with Star Control 2 which is now more commonly known as Ur-Quan Masters after its open-source release which led it it being eventually ported to many platforms and being available easily to this day - the developers had a contract clause which stated that once the game stopped generating any royalties for them, due to the publisher not selling or not being able to sell copies anymore, the copyrights would revert back to them automatically. However even with this the one snag which forced them to rename Star Control II was that Star Control as a *trademark* was owned by Accolade which refused to sell it and used it to publish the relatively maligned Star Control III which had no input from the original developers.
It's like 1:27 AM right now, and as a person trying to craft their way into content creation, I can understand what you're saying so deeply, I hope you can grow even more into the future, I truly appreciate your work and dedication, cheers!

You are correct I did find you through your games you cant play anymore video and I like your videos and I like how you write them my fav in this one is how you used the couple sentences about your old video as both an opener in the intro and a closer in the outro feels poetic.
I can't explain exactly why but the things you mentioned, the things you described and gave them life from your perspective - I'm really amazed how you managed such a hard thing! I truly cried at the end of this video! The whole storytelling is really unique and so human - but also not.. It's not only for the games right now in general but you managed to open a door to the scariest thoughts of a human being which are the eternity itself!

Pulling back the veil for a second, I do absolutely love the videos I'm making now. 3 or 4 times in my channel's existence, I've had a video go viral only to realize that I actually don't want the rest of my time on this platform to be like that. However, when my FNAF video did well, which was a video essay I put a lot of work into, I felt genuinely happy about it. This is the type of content I wanna do, for sure.
