As a bit of a left-field suggestion for young Alex looking for a first car, I submit the Nissan Note N-Tec+ from around 2012. It’s not an estate, and it’s far from cool, but the mini MPV/hatchback has plenty of room for five people and a decent boot, plus you get metallic paint, two colour alloys and tinted rear windows, which are ingredients are a cool car might have! They’re common and the main demographic seems to be older drivers, so it should insure cheaply enough. There’s plenty of engine options and other features, so I’d have to assume it won’t be too hard to work on or get parts for... Lots of scope for upgrades too! Failing that, fall back on CT Alex’s default suggestion - get a Celica ;)
It is actually mostly riders that try to overtake on busy London roads in very dangerous ways , they swerve in and out behind me and try overtaking when there is clearly no room. Happened to me just hours ago on my way home with some prick on a typhoon ped but because he couldn't get in front of me because there was no damm space, he decided it would be a great idea to roll up on my drivers side at the next set of lights to shout abuse at me BUT also tell me he's gonna smash my mirror . I simply laughed at him and said in a very calm way 'TRY IT MATE' before he could reply the lights turned green so I took off, I watched him speeding up behind me and i knew he was close in order to smash my mirror so I pulled ever so slightly to the left so he missed. Here is where I can now laugh about it as he nearly rear ended a car at the next set of lights which I could see pissed him off . This is where he decided to jump of his hairdryer and march towards me with his fists in the air , funny thing is I had decided to jump out my car and confront him. He quickly shit his pants as I charged towards him with my voice now raised and he couldn't apologise fast enough but as he jumped bk on his bike he started telling me how lucky I was he didn't stab me and i should follow him to a specific place which I did. What this fool didn't realise was the area he thought he led me where his supposed mates were is an area I grew up in east London and not only did his friends know me I knew there brothers, mum's,dads ECT. Turns out the idiot had only moved into that area for a few weeks so I lets just say he ended up having a very bad end to his day.
i've been on sick leave and got back to work yesterday, had a chance to listen to the previous podcast, cause i was saving it for work, and now i can listen to a new one. Thats the way to start a week, thanks guys!
Love the bike stories and everything else of cause. Gareth & Alex are spot on they are only dangerous if you make them dangerous. Been a biker for over 50 years as I love them but I am still learning. You won't regret it Ethan & Jack.
38:35 I'm 16 and in getting a lupo tdi sport in a few months I'm a mountain biker and it has enough spacer if you put the bikes on the roof, it's super cheap, cool and great platform to start mods and learning to drive. Steer away from estates because the insurance it high and not too good if you have no drinking experience
One car boy racers don't seem to suspect is our s max 2.5t. 7 seater, 2.4 tons, 0-60 7.6 seconds 5 pot volvo engine from focus st. Only about 900 in the country. Very fun.
A mildly cool first car you can get would be a swift sport but it never seems to get mentioned! You can get a mk1 for less than 2 grand and insurance is relatively cheap (about 1k so standard for 1st year driver)
People trying to race you grids my gears too... However I always get sh*tbox's trying to race me rather than anything nice. But I drive a yellow DC2 Type R.. so comes with the price of driving it. Thanks for the advice Gareth,, will use that next time.
Takes the piss when diesel vauxhalls or 1.0 fiestas try race me constantly just cause of the car i have. When they're up my arse all i do is slam on my breaks, watch them in the rear view mirror panic, then floor it away into the distance to make the point their car and driving is shit. Cant be only me who does this surely? 👀
Brake checking I don't agree with mate but the rest I do there's a reason why performance cars a mainly petrol people what people try to shit on things that are actually good whether it be cars or houses or whatever you won't the attitudes or manners on the road👍
@@jackrigby6867 I should point out i do slow down to a crawl before i do it and make sure no one else is behind them, just to see if they back off but if not then they deserve it. Great podcast boys. Alex, you might want to double check your speed limits for the podcast van. A single carriageway A-Road (national speed limit) is 50mph for a commercial over 2000kg. 60mph on a dual carriageway and 70 on the motorway. More and more van drivers are being caught out by the speed camera vans.
I bought a 2010 VW Scirocco about a year ago against some ppls advice (possible timing chain issues etc). The thing i hate most is having to remove frost on the inside of the car. Must be leaking somewhere but no idea where :(
Alex, listen to Jack's advies and get a B5 Audi A4 or a B5 VW Passat (they're basically the same). Super reliable, easy to work on if you follow the workshop manual (which you can buy from VW for 8 quid), perfect first car!
In regards to the overtaking thing, I live in Australia so its not really a thing in and around Sydney. I have done a number of longer trips to Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, etc where some of the roads are single lane either way with a dirt/gravel shoulder. During those trips, overtaking is normal and half expected by anyone doing less than the speed limit; trucks, caravans and people with trailers (I usually was one of those). Maybe people should all come to Australia and experience the sheer terror and excitement of overtaking a small road-train (filled with hay and dropping crap everywhere) in a van towing its max capacity...that was one of the biggest adrenaline rushes I have ever experienced while driving
Yeah I used to have an R33 4dr GTS25T in manual, which I put a massive 3" stainless turbo back exhaust on. Literally everywhere I would go, 9/10 heads would just be staring endlessly, and had many occasions of random people yelling at me to do a burnout while waiting at intersections. Being one of the most commonly stolen cars in my country at the time, I really wasn't a fan of all the attention and swapped it for something less conspicuous but just as much fun. I still miss the fuck out of that car, and really gutted I got rid of it right before the massive appreciation curve those cars have enjoyed, while the car I swapped for is still on the depreciation curve, but I honestly think that skyline would have been stolen from me long ago if I held on to it.
25:25 - advise Jack that there is a growing group of T5 owners that are getting younger and younger. My £300 wagon still catches out most boy racers. [ absolutely standard, £10k gets you >500BHP, how much is a second hand M4 again :-P ]
He could look at a few smaller engine ones though like an 06 1.4 Astra or a focus estate or even if he could find one a Ford escort estate that could be a quirky one and another one that’s not massively cool but not horrendous to work on is a Renault megane 2007ish 1.5 diesel not bad on tax good on fuel and won’t be horrific on insurance
There is the benefit with an older car (last of the carbs/first of the efi) of ease to work on as well as classic insurance which helps massively for young drivers
I hope Gareth gets his sale. I was in similar situation, where a dad bought his 18 year old son my m235i. Transaction went without a hitch and the car got a new MOT recently (over a year after the sale) so the kid didn't write it off yet.
An ozone generator is like $80 or so on Amazon, and will completely remove any odors from the car, just run it for an hour or so and see if that works, otherwise 2 or 3 hours with all the windows up, can't be in the car when it's running unless you want to suffocate, but then run the car with the air on and windows open and get rid of the ozone and it should completely remove any odors no matter how strong, even works on years of cigarette smoke in the interior
I have a Suzuki Swift Sport some mods but nothing engine wise and I always get people at lights trying to race me where I live in Hull. But some places I’ve been such as Leeds and Bradford it happens too so who knows 🤔
Every car I’ve owned if it has an exhaust, nice wheels and it’s lowered (If it remotely looks modified). Everyone seems to expect you to speed and race them and it’s bloody irritating especially when they drive right up my arse because of it.
Just wondering how easy is it to find a Rustbox car for 100 Pounds in the UK i know that 100 euros and a 100 pounds arent exactly the same but we picked up a shitbox citroen from 98 for a 100 euros and its been with us since 2016
Weird to hear that overtaking is frowned down upon. Driving in Germany, Italy, almost anywhere in Europe, especialy in the holiday season, you will overtake, and will be overtaken more frequently than once per minute, and noone is bothered as long as the maneuver is safe.
I once noticed a BMW sitting on my arse on the motorway and put my foot down to get away from him. Turns out it was an undercover cop car and they then put on the blues and twos and did me for speeding. Wankers.
The b5 A4 Avant isn't any good for a first car, quotes for me were around 3-4k for the smallest engine. I ended up going for a 1.6 petrol A3 8p, the A3 sportbacks look like mini estates and the diesels are really cheap to insure 👍
Try a golf R. Everyone and his dog wants a go. So much so that you leave the lights like Miss Daisy and let them crack on. Jb4 pushes 370bhp and you just can’t be arsed lol. Bless
Also happy to get over to the left (subject to shit on the side of the road) to allow bikers a better view to get their overtake done safer. Takes 2 to Tango
Good comment. I too like a good overtake in my old Fiesta diesel. I am also a driving instructor, I am fed up with the 40 mph brigade. I have coached some of my better pupils to do overtakes. But of course, once we get to 30 zone, we are doing 30, not the 40 mph they want to drive at. I honestly think they have no clue what the ns sign means and just guess what the speed is.
@@paulgreenwood3245 You need to learn all the NSL speeds given the different types of vehicles. It wasn't until I bought an XLWB van I realised they were limited to 60 on dual carriageways and 50 on single. Lacking knowledge on my part given RoSPA gold test standard :O
@@devonutopia yes, definitely consider this when next renting a van! Congratulations on your Gold! Would like to do further training, IAM or ROSPA at some point. Have you seen the vids by Reg Local?
May i just add that it's not all old people driving well below the 60mph limit - or doing the same 40mph in a 30 limit. As an example, i'm 60 and ALWAYS drive at the top-end of any limit. I also overtake whenever appropriate/sensible to do so. I blame much of the slow driving that is now common place on people fiddling with gadgets and not paying attention to the road ahead. Many of these drivers are in their 20's or 30's, but not all by any means.
Alex should buy a Subaru Legacy, cool car, great awd, enough space to live in. And the ej20 engine will last forever if taken care of and if it has enough fuids.
I also got done by an old Volvo estate was up my arse pulled up at some lights and it just fucked off was the 5 pot engine could tell by the stunning sound track
had another time like alex mentioned. on the highway just driving along doing 110km/h coz thats the standard speed most go on the highway and most cops dont care as long as you arnt all over the road driving like a idiot. got to a passing lane and had someone who was probly 200m behind me, then come flying up past me. then when the passing lane ended, i caught up to them fairly quickly coz they had dropped down to only going 80km/h. so i then passed them and never saw them again.
Some motorcyclists are absolute maniacs. A few years back, a friend had one try to overtake traffic waiting to turn right, that bike ended up embedded in the driver's door of a very rare Tommi Makinen Evo VI and the rider got a free trip in a helicopter. Fortunately he lived to see another day.
Clearly Alex didn't get the dress code

I could listen to this podcast for longer than I'm willing to admit, and I'm not even that into podcasts!
"Made it out of cardboard first" ,this mans been watching project binky

38:35 I'm 16 and in getting a lupo tdi sport in a few months I'm a mountain biker and it has enough spacer if you put the bikes on the roof, it's super cheap, cool and great platform to start mods and learning to drive. Steer away from estates because the insurance it high and not too good if you have no drinking experience
And NO audi or bmw as the insurance is crazy because of all the idiots that crash them
How much is insurance for that at your age?
@@McBenjiBoo 1100 no black box, mods declared, full comp, 4000 miles

Funny, fresh, entertainning.
Choices on cars are personal but humour is welcome.
Thank you and keep it up.
I once saw a refrigerated Renault Trafic with the blues flashing!!! That really was a shocker
One car boy racers don't seem to suspect is our s max 2.5t. 7 seater, 2.4 tons, 0-60 7.6 seconds 5 pot volvo engine from focus st. Only about 900 in the country. Very fun.
Oooo boy I bet that drinks.
@@Pr0vost about 28mpg if you drive carefully and mid teens when you drive hard. I've heard of some being remapped and getting less than 10 mpg
As a 6.2 litre E63 owner people get so upset when i overtake! Its so loud and sleeperish they always end up thinking I want to race!
If someone over took me in one of those I'd be so happy to hear and see that car and engine note especially the supercharger version.
Works a treat usually. If i need to actually brake for an emergency and they rear end me i waint be happy so i do it as a warning to them but i get some people wont agree with doing it mate, each to their own 👍 its just my number one hate when im driving 😂
Completely with the Dave the overtaking man on how stupid and crappy people get when you overtake them.
Yeah everyone wants to race the Mr2 or the Celica GT4, every time!
Down with the 40mph bregade!! Agreed with the long reader email
Love the podcast keep up the good work
I thought this was another vitara video
ok
For Alex getting a first car, what about an older volvo? 940 kind of thing
First cars should always be a shitbox Fiesta or Corsa bought for £250, as the chances are you'll bin it anyway.
ALFA Romeo 159 SW, fwd / Looks nice...
For me at 21 fully comp it is £4,500, Not worth it tbh (that's the cheapest)
Did you all ring each other and say “we’re all gonna wear this colour jacket today” but forgot to tell Alex?
Can’t believe I fell for the ‘knock, knock’ joke even though I watched the last podcast 😂😂absolutely hilarious
Great work as per usual guys (I say this without watching), I'm always laughing like a madman listening to your podcasts whilst on the bike!
ok
I have a Suzuki Swift Sport some mods but nothing engine wise and I always get people at lights trying to race me where I live in Hull. But some places I’ve been such as Leeds and Bradford it happens too so who knows 🤔
@Alex whoever you are, The Skoda fabia from 01-07 do an estate with a 1.3 petrol and a 1.4tdi, go for the TDI!!
volvo v40 t4 1.9 is a nice cool estate if you ask me, seen a coupe of auto trader for less than 1k
When you pull off an overtake in your 1l k11 micra with 60hp that’s a buzz that lasts for weeks!
Ethan looks the best as a cartoon character.
Might be showing my age a bit but ICE used to stand for In Car Entaintment, basically what mods you'd made to your stereo system
As regards the sale of Gareth's M4, if the payment comes from BBL - that's a bounce back loan, which would then disappear from his account.
Becoming a real strong fave now. Banter similar to the old Top Gear News. Thanks Lads!
I need more Gareth in my life. That e46 estate bit was gold haha
I once noticed a BMW sitting on my arse on the motorway and put my foot down to get away from him. Turns out it was an undercover cop car and they then put on the blues and twos and did me for speeding. Wankers.
These are great keep it up!!
First Car Suggestion:
Volvo 850 R 👌🏼👌🏼
The b5 A4 Avant isn't any good for a first car, quotes for me were around 3-4k for the smallest engine. I ended up going for a 1.6 petrol A3 8p, the A3 sportbacks look like mini estates and the diesels are really cheap to insure 👍
I’ve not long got rid of my Saab :/ good cars when looked after, look smart with money invested too
Ethan. Congrats on lvl 37. I'm grinding through lvl 35 ATM.....
I’m on minus 20. Trying though.
love the honda city moped in the back
Alex, get a Volvo 850. If you can find one in good condition you'll be set.
I agree-my first car is a Volvo V50, and the one thing I regret about it is that it isn’t an 850 (or at least a Volvo that IS a Volvo lol)
First cars should always be a shitbox Fiesta or Corsa bought for £250, as the chances are you'll bin it anyway.
Cool cheap userfriendly estate. i would say Volvo 240,740 and 940 estate. 940 turbos are dirt cheap atm
I've got a 2016 1.2 fabia estate for a first car. Insurance is okay and it's not that slow. I've got the Monte Carlo so it's alright
Try a golf R. Everyone and his dog wants a go. So much so that you leave the lights like Miss Daisy and let them crack on. Jb4 pushes 370bhp and you just can’t be arsed lol. Bless
Alex (not Kirsten), Alfa 156 or 159 Sportwagon. If you want a cool estate that's (reasonably) easy to work on, they're it. And they're dirt cheap.
Love a good overtake. Obviously done to the roadcraft standard.

I knew a policeman who always used to flash his bag at me.. Well less of a policeman more of an uncle
Was it a ball 🎒
Is there heating in the garage? If not I suggest getting some. People look freezing
An altezza estate/hatch would be cool for Alex. Reliable Toyota tech which should be quite easy to work on.
Alex, how's about a Galant VR4 estate. Quite rare, but pretty fast and does look quite cool. Never worked on one so not sure on that front
Never stop this! Highlight of my week
Alex, buy a Volvo 850R. It's cool, cheap (in the UK at least), has tons of power, is reliable and is super easy to work on.
