I was just checking if I had missed a Friday Car Throttle and here it is. A cheeky late night treat. Or now timed for 5pm EST and the American viewer market? Edit: going to enjoy this. The roads around Ladybower, Snake Pass and the like, are fantastic. Great on an early Sunday morning blast before everyone else is up and on the road.
Love a B5.5 Passat, nearly 20 years on from being discontinued and they're still one of the best cars you can buy bang for buck. Comfortable, loads of room, handle "well enough", plenty of cars came equipped with multifunction steering wheels and cruise control, loads of torque from the PD which run for miles and can run on cooking oil... Edit: an Uber isn't public transport, being available to the public and being transport does not public transport make. Public transport follows designated routes for set fees.
The B5/.5 handles like an Audi since it has multilink - not like a quattro but an Audi nonetheless! (Unless your bushings are done which they often are with older cars)
The Uber driver's car was private property. Therefore cheating. Having said that the UK's public transport system blows my mind every time I use it. (I live in the US so ours is non existent)
Still weird to me how cars in the UK depreciate so quick. 500 pounds (well it was disgusting but a 4 hour one man clean would done it pretty)... is it the left hand drive thing? sure it had some bushings work and maybe a failed strut. But again 500 pounds? So weird.... I do remember getting a really cheap (and fun car in my youth) for about 5000 pounds and meet a Norwegian with a the same model car but in a lot worse condition and he payed double (10000 pounds) for it and he thought it was really cheap... I actually think you could export cars from the UK even doing a left to right hand conversion and still make loads of profit to Scandinavian countries...
It's got to be Alex's win technically, tip for Ethan and Jack from a taxi driver, hail or get a taxi with a roof sign from a rank, they are Hackney Carriages (public hire / pblic transport). Using Uber or prebooked private hire cars is private hire so not public transport.

@@jase6709 tbH anything with a VW engine would do the job, such as a skoda fabia etc
Passat for myself. I owned a 2005 2.0 TDi Sport for two years and it was a brilliant car. I bought it for £1,400 with 169,000 miles on the clock and sold it with 209,000 miles for £750. It also had a Nappa leather upgrade.
Still got one, 2001 pd130
any tdi :P
@@girlsdrinkfeck Not it it's got many of newer VW engines, granted the 1.9 PD is a legend though.
A win for Alex this time, i love these challenges
Uber is not public transport, if you're not sharing it with random strangers it's not public transport. Alex won, 100%
Uber pool?
Well, you kind of are sharing it with random strangers, just not at the same time. It's a grey area kind of thing.
@@LlamaFluff I'll give you that, but they didn't use uber pool. I feel like uber and taxi's kind of defeat the spirit of a car vs public transport race given that both use cars.
Uber😂😂😂 taxi mate that’s public transport in uk not America
Loved it, cheers!
Although, Uber/ cab is not public transport therefore Ethan and Jack are disqualified.
Hey boyss, love your challenges. Here is one idea of challenge: Some money to buy a car and transform it into a "camper" where you three need to spend one night inside. Alex had already done it inside a french Kinder überraschung (that little peugeot).
I hope to see a series on the mighty b5 passat
Not sure the PD engineers can handle cooking oil...
I'm actually disappointed Alex missed the turn. I really wanted him to win but I have to say it should be a tie IMO because the Uber.
The Uber driver's car was private property. Therefore cheating.
Having said that the UK's public transport system blows my mind
every time I use it. (I live in the US so ours is non existent)
Video idea - High mileage restoration. £500 to buy a 200k+ car £500 to restore it and drive 500 miles. Whoever sells it for the most wins.
As a German, I would love to see the Passat get tidied up and given a bit of love🥺
This car (which won via disqualification) sounds like an ideal basis for another trading up video.
It's clearly a quality car, just needs professionally cleaned and that damper issue sorted. It can be Miles's adopted cousin.
that sounds like a fun challenge, £500 stop and buy a car challenge. stop members of the public driving their car and try by it for £500
Still weird to me how cars in the UK depreciate so quick.
When jack said he wasn’t running I had a flash back to all those times James may said he wouldn’t run on TV. Cracking vid lads👊🏽
Ethan: "I know this isnt public transport" - 20:10
Brilliant episode. That Passat deserves some love, it's a survivor that could last many more miles.
Yeah! It is a good episode. Really like these TDI engines
It's got to be Alex's win technically, tip for Ethan and Jack from a taxi driver, hail or get a taxi with a roof sign from a rank, they are Hackney Carriages (public hire / pblic transport). Using Uber or prebooked private hire cars is private hire so not public transport.
Hello Car Nerds. I have an idea for a video. This is because I can not keep to a speed, And, without the digital display telling me i have no idea how fast i am driving. So,,, you have to drive in various setting with the speed dial covered for the driver and try to stick to the speed limit, with a tolerance of + or - 3kph.
I look forward to the video. Only 10% of your earning required
Uber doesnt count imo. Either public transport failed you, or you failed at public transport. Whichever you prefer, Alex deserves the win.
uber was not excluded before race
@@vampirwrr Clearly a divisive result! I reckon play fair, don't try to win on technicalities. Technically they could have Ubered all the way there from the beginning, for an astronomical cost, but still would have won.
What I learned from this is that British public transport is late, or, the timetables aren't listed correctly. 🙄
To be fair... It's normally both
This isn't Japanese Public Transport, where they'll give you an excuse note to show at work if they make you late because _no one_ will believe you otherwise. That's how dependable and reliable Japan Public Transport is.
Google is shit for public transport information, in the north anyway
Google can’t be trusted for public transport timings, you need to use whatever the bus company’s app is.
I love these old Top Gear style challenges they are my favourite content from the channel. Alex you may have lost but I'd say Percy claims a moral victory as on principal of car Vs public transport it would have won. Also public transport failed Jack and Ethan resulting in a "no option but Uber".
No fucking WAY that first guy's name was Nigel with that voice! Thats so fucking hilarious!
It's deffo public transport, An Uber/Taxi when you/public transport screw up is a staple part of journey.
I love these challenges. Anyway who was waiting for "that wheel" to liberate itself on the motorway?
"As we all know, everybody loves a DP" - Alex, 2022😂😂
This ua-cam.com/video/OFpjhPebYUI/v-deo.html💙💙
You know as they said, Alex could have easily won had he prepared properly and learned where the finish line is even if Ethan and Jack used Uber. I give it to them.
+1
Ethan did the research and prepared, then when they got to the bus stop, Jack did a search and saw no busses coming.
Ethan and Jack /may have/ won the race, but public transport lost spectacularly.
@@somerandommug having a train pull off as one arrives is stupid planning from the train operator.
@@allothernamesbutthis you realise just how many trains arrive and depart from each station each with their own schedules to have all of the trains wait at every station for every other train to arrive is absurd. It's entirely up to the traveler to plan that shit properly
@@TheHobohobbit how many trains come from over 150 miles away? Probably not many.
public transport is transport which carries multiple passengers, a large taxi CAN carry multiple passengers but common sense dictates that it doesn’t actually count as public transport, when you compare trains & buses/coaches
Great video and glad you came up to my neck of the woods. Hope you do some more up here one day!
This is cool, my first ever road trip on a motorcycle (125cc because I'm a fool) was from Southwark to Castleton in the Peak District so this is a bit nostalgic for me.
Definitely either do another "trade up" series with the Passat or keep it and just absolutely rice the shit out of it
I think with the Passat turn it into a sleeper. That would be brilliant.
Passats are prime sleeper material, those VAG diesel lumps can be fast as fuck, common as muck
@@SpartanMJO12 as much as i want to say keep the diesel and tune it, something in me says ‘how about GTI swap it?’
@@TheBimmerMan My 180 BHP Passat felt faster than my 270 BHP GTI - I don't see the appeal, personally
Such a good video guys, but they did cheat! The PD passat is a great reliable car. Can't wait for the quick resto
Depends on if terms was whos faster, car or public transport(metro, bus, train, etc) but uber is kinda cheating, in one hand it is public transport, but its kinda the same like taking a car
Really happy, you've decided to keep that beast of a Passat! Happy to see somebody really cared for it and you're giving it a second chance. Would be really interesting to see what kind of problems you would find with it.
This ua-cam.com/video/OFpjhPebYUI/v-deo.html💙💙
Heck yeah, I would love to see Percy back to the roads. It looks awesome for it's age and miles on it.
By the way, that car brings memories of my grandparents, I remember going to the dealer to buy one with them... Man... Do I miss them so much! It was the same color only a 1.8t model for the Brazilian market
Yeah think Alex gets his first win here! Can’t wait to see what you do with the vw. Please more content like this and all buying a cheap car and going for a road trip
The win is clearly Alex's!!!! As you said public transport not cheating in a taxi boys cos you missed your train and bus
I'm giving it to Alex. Imo, the whole point for the public transport team was not to use a car, which did not happen.
This is a wonderful video, thank you for the great videos. They remind me of Clarkson, Hammond, May Top Gear. Also, Alex should be the winner, since a taxi is hired for private use, so Ethan and Jack technically cheated. If it was allowed, they could have hired a cab at the beginning of the race and took it to the end. That was not allowed, so the use of the taxi should not be allowed.
Uber is private hire.
Public transport is defined as,
"buses, trains, and other forms of transport that are available to the public, charge set fares, and run on fixed routes."
Uber is not public transport.
The car wins.
I don't even care about that aspect, he got there at 1:59 but had to park the car so he still got there before them
As an owner of the estate variant, there are so many things to love about these cars, quite easy to work on as well for the most part.
Solid cars for sure. That front suspension setup thou 😣
@@danmoney9932 lol yeah, that bolt that secures the two upper arm ball joints has been the biggest pain in the arse for sure.
Challenge: buy 5 shitboxes, make them pretty and fix them, sell them for profit with the total at the end buy a new car.
people say that public transport is quicker, but when it goes wrong - which let's be honest in the UK it is rather often, it turns into a catastrophe
I had a Highline PD estate with full leather and heated seats. The most solid, reliable car I have ever owned. Might look a bit dated now but will just go on forever
Still driving one! Think I paid around £500 for it as well.
The road was lovely to drive down often used it on delivery's, but I wounder how congested it will be now 🤣
Great video guys
Absolutely brilliant 👏 Well done boys. Can we have more of these challenges, it's just like the old Top Gear but better.
Buses are a minefield if you aren't a local, i was in Hong Kong traveling on buses and yeah i had the same issue where we couldnt find our bus number/stop
visited snake pass/that reservoir last year with a friend, came all the way up from Brighton on the train haha
This vid reminds me why I love being able to drive and not have to endure the trains like I used when I was younger
F*cking brilliant video lads
I’ve gotta say I think Alex won that one to be fair to him. Also, I see a project Percy series coming and I’d love to buy it in a few months as I’m really genuinely thinking of returning to the UK.
How do they always find awesome cars for little money. By the way how many awesome people are watching this 4 days later?
Alex won imho.
I think Uber can't be considered actual public transport.
